I was fortunate enough to grow up with a father who learned to play the trumpet at an early age and mastered it through his life. He was in many big bands and played a lot of jazz throughout my preteen years the late 70s. There was nothing like waking up on a Saturday morning and hearing him walk down the hallway playing this song to absolute perfection. Herb Alpert was one of his favorites, along with Maynard Ferguson and Chuck Mangione. At any given time he would switch up between the three artists and play the songs as though he wrote them himself. I grew up thinking everyone's dad was that talented. I'd give anything to go back in time 40 years for just one hour to hear him play....I miss you Dad.
I remember when this song came out in 1979 . That was the year we moved to California from New York, I think of my late uncle 😢 oh he was such a good man . He was the one who helped us to move to California, he looked out for us . R.I.P. uncle James .
I got my allowance and rushed to the record store to buy this on 45 RMP for about $2.00 Back Then. I would wake up and fall to sleep to this song. Memories can be pleasant at times. Thank you Lord.
The best memory I have linked to this song is waking up at 6 am, just at sunset, after having slept under a bench at a rest stop, getting on my motorcycle, and riding through the New Mexico desert as the sun rose. I was 20 at the time, and didn't have a care in the world. God I miss having adventures!

Brilliant piece of classic electronic jazz funk. The track Rise may have got all the attention, and not unfairly. But I think Rotation was the better track, and deserved much better than the mid-40s placing it got in the UK chart. Bought it on snazzy clear 12" vinyl on the day of release, in an extended version from the LP. Does anybody else hear the influences I detected from the start? It always sounded to my ears that it had taken several sonic and rhythmic cues from Terry Riley's A Rainbow In Curved Air, and Music For Eighteen Musicians by Steve Reich, while much of the cool, understated, cleanlined funky side owed a lot to the Brazilian band Azymuth. I thought I had the definitive version of Rotation on my 12", which runs about 6½ minutes. But now I hear this, I'm astonished to find an even longer version. However, a quick check on Amazon reveals what you seem to have done here: on the CD issue of the Rise album, there are 2 versions of the track, and you've run them together - the timing would seem to bear this out. Correct? If so... neat idea!!
I wouldn't concider this jazz really. More of a blues groove. It maintains a constant 4/4 time signature where jazz is usually all over the place. 2/4 to 6/8 to Neptune over to Mars, and skip back to earth, and back to 6/8. Mind exhausting. This is just kick-back and groove tunes.
I have the album Rise which has Rotation on it & I've also got the 12" Clear Vinyl of Rotation.... It still sounds awesome even today. Thanks for sharing ;-)

Back in the day I played this over and over and over, and I love it now as much as I did then Rotation.

5 decades. Lol
Yo tenia 10 años cuando salio este álbum, ese fue el año en que perdí a mi padre. Esta canción me trae una mezcla de sentimientos ambivalentes, aun así hay que decir que es UNA MAGNIFICA MELODÍA.
God Bless you.
👏👏🤝

This song kept playing in my head, today, and now I'm listening to it being played. In '79, we were stationed at Travis AFB, California.
Dav Currie. My condolences to your loss. May your son rest peacefully.
Skate to this...just once. You'll never forget it.
A nice glass of wine with a warm summer breeze blowing and the refrains of Herb Alpert...sigh!
Black-Lights and Starry-Lasers... It's an ALL-SKATE!
YUUUUUUPPPP!
That's an interesting idea, Brian. I'm a roller skater, and I like the idea. Now I want to try it.
Wish i could...but strut down a busy street with this in your ear...freeing
This song is being played at a graduation and I had to know what it was. So beautiful!
Ah the 80s❤
Two years later I visit this place and I feel more happy than before. Thanks always Mr. Alpert.
Correct? If so... neat idea!!
terry platt love azymuth too!!
Correct :)
Definitely my favorite by Herb Alpert. As a teen this was the Herb Alpert song I listened to the majority of the time.
It reminds me when I was a child!
me too , 70`s were the best
Better than these days by far....So Sad where the music went to straight to the TRASH
oh... hello James B. alive again ?
Me too
I'm Glad i Found this Hidden Gems Love it my soul moving the vibes 🥰🎧🎺
I used to fuckin hate jazz but I guess the club I lived above only played the shit kind, cos this is amazingly good.
Kanonamos
This actually sounds a lot more like Fila Brazilia / The Cutler
Where do you think all these EDM kids get their ideas? #HerbAndChuckMangioneDidItFirst
I know, I know... there IS a lot of depressing jazz out there, for specifically that reason. Fast, fun Jazz= fun Disco music!
La ballavo a 18 anni.. finalmente l ho ritrovata...magia puraaaa!!!
I have the album Rise which has Rotation on it & I've also got the 12" Clear Vinyl of Rotation.... It still sounds awesome even today. Thanks for sharing ;-)
Mine doesn't...because I played the grooves right off it. :D
@@kcsnow9447 LOL I know what you mean there... I lost count of the times I played it over the years. I had the album Rise on Cassette Tape too which snapped in the car tape deck.... Now I'm showing my age LMAO ;-)
