Joe,your valve and carby work is excellent, your knowledge is amazing,I’ve never been able to do that sort of thing well but watching your work is inspiring.
Beautiful quad and again killer video man you have some of the best build/fix videos on TH-cam I’ve been watching and subbed for almost 4 years now and haven’t missed a video yet great job man you give sabo a run for his money
Yup maybe dropping the needle a few clicks since it is running a little lean, or checking for the header nuts they often get loosen after to many times being taken apart or overtightening them makes them come loose, if so try double nuts so they dont move.
I was thinking the exact same thing. This dude is helping thousands of people learn engine repair stuff and just because there are one or 2 thibgs he night do that some "pros" may disagree withn they shit on him. This channel is amazing.
NICE JOB!! I live in Oregon, todays market where I live 5k to 5,500k for the YFZ450, our market has blowing up the past 3 years everything from SXS quads dirt bikes have skyrocketed to a all time high. Everyone wants to ride the sand. Dunes now and take advantage of our awesome riding we have here in Oregon. Our sand dunes are the best in the USA..
If its coming from the over flow then it may have been working out the bubbles in the system and may have been over filled. So that may not be an issue.
Backfire is usually a sign of lean yellow flame shooting out is usually to rich but I've had issue with popping just from needing a new exhaust gasket or headpipe not being tight enough
You have to change your water pump shaft. It had some scoring we could see in the previous videos. Mine had the same issue, any minor scoring causes it to leak past the weep hole. I had changed mine to an aliexpress one, it got scored again after some rough motocross track riding.. i think i will purchase an OEM one and try again.
Got the lean pop on decel, valves are loose too that ticking would shit me. Definately doesn’t sound right. I would go back to oem carb specs and start again. It’s only got a slip on so shouldn’t be hard to get right
There should be holes in the carrier bearing housing on the sprocket side i use a nut driver that fits in the hole through the sprocket spokes then rock the quad forward or back using the force of the sprocket bumping the nut driver to adjust the chain so not to scuff up or to avoid beating on a screwdriver its easier especially if its stuck in place and needs persuaded. I had my water pump seal leak after fresh rebuild 1 time and that was it weirdest thing. Just a thought on the decel backfire I had a aftermarket pipe that was not perfectly round at the head where it mounts and wasn't getting a good seal at the gasket ended up shaving it down on the hi spots so it seated to seal up decel pop went away.
You need to go back to factory jeting , and then tune idle and tip-in with adjustment screws. And then jet for your pipe later. Also it looks like to me one of them intake valves was sitting lower than the other two.
Nice job man! Only think I can say is you put your masterlink clip on the wrong way the round end (closed part) should facing the direction of orientation to prevent the clip being knocked off
its a good looking quad for sure. plus, Yamaha is the only sport quad maker currently so all YFZs are popular/valuable right now. Ya, I agree, 4500 for sure. Thanks again for another sweet vid and as always, be safe my friend :)
Really should have had new sprockets with the chain they are badly worn. Is the backfire an over fueling issue as it's normally unburnt fuel in the exhaust unless the timing is slightly out somehow
What I have done when I ordered the piston that was tight like that I actually just slight ran the hone it the cylinder it really didn’t change the gap but made for smoother cylinder surface and better compression
When you pull aluminum bass apart and then your retighten it retorque it it moves around when it gets hot then cold and receipts you got to understand how luminum works with cold temperatures in hot temperatures it moves around a lot and it's got to reseed itself and you have to retorque all them bolts
check the slider for the THROTTLE VALVE PLATE, a lot of people put that upside down, the part with a small hole goes down, put a pilot jet #50 and the mixture screw to 3 turns, maybe you have to drill a copper cap that is covering the mixture screw, Use a 5/32 drill bit to drill the copper cap that covers the mixing screw, do the Zip Tie Mod to the acceleration pump, change the needle to NCVQ and put the clip in the fourth position
Just a test but that exhaust maybe causing the backfires. try your other yfz\s exhaurst if it runs betting pickup a pipe or silencer for replacment. JUST FYI
Great job joe sounds brilliant don't no where all the negative comments come from I think you've done an awesome job on this and yeah it is worth the money take care mate and all the best 🔧🔧👍👌🔧
Good shit bro! I love your videos. Did you ever put in an oiled air filter? No air filter will cause it to lean out and backfire. It's real close to being 100%
Do you have to divide the clearance by 2, because the clearance on the side you are measuring is maybe 0.003 inch but the other side is 0 at that moment (because you push the piston against the cylinder). Shouldn't there be 0.002 inches clearance on both sides at the same time?
Should be using telescopic bore gauges and micrometres for a lot of stuff he does. Not feeler gauges and clapped out digital vernier calipers.... The list goes on. But I agree. Clearance should be overall not pushed to one side. And even if he had feelers won't tell him if the piston and/or bore is out of round in spots. He makes enough money from flipping them and TH-cam to not be using claw hammers and old sockets to drive seals in. But splurges on tooling in other areas. Strange cat.
Incorrect he just destroyed his valves they're over $100 a piece and they have to be matched fitted from a machine shop. You cannot lap titanium valves you take the coating off then the valve begins to wear extremely fast. Unless this was rebuilt before and those valves are stainless steel and I wasn't aware of that. That's what most people do when they're titanium valves wear out they put a heavier chain usually a stiffer spring and replace the valves with stainless.
Ill bet ur so glad its done for most part and just ready to flip it n forget, been some real headaches and issues for you.but its turned out nice despite that questionable head.nice!!!snooky pa.🤟
New piston and rings. You have to hone that cylinder. You can hone a nikacil cylinder bro. Its so hard the hones barely even leave a cross hatch. But its good enough to seat the rings. That glazed cylinder is going to screw you
The backfiring is unspent gases, as long as you are on the gas it doesn’t pop its when you let of the throttle, any time we change the exhaust on our track bikes(sport bikes) it needs to get tuned or it pops like crazy, on my superduke ive seen the resonator can explode on the akra exhaust system, i could definitely be wrong but id say you have carb issues.
I don't think you should have lapped those valves ... they are titanium and all you did was remove the coating. You should have just lightly, fine wire wheeled them, to just remove the carbon build up. I hope it works out for you ...

Try adjusting the fuel screw bet it cleans the poping up should of done that before messing with the jetting

Check bolt tightness during initial brake in period.
What’s that tool called you used for the valve seat width
Really should have had new sprockets with the chain they are badly worn. Is the backfire an over fueling issue as it's normally unburnt fuel in the exhaust unless the timing is slightly out somehow
Maybe the backfire issue is caused by a small air leak in exhaust front pipe .
It sounds like the CDI isn't advancing spark upon increase of throttle / engine speed.. Might be why backfiring
What I have done when I ordered the piston that was tight like that I actually just slight ran the hone it the cylinder it really didn’t change the gap but made for smoother cylinder surface and better compression
I did that instead of filing the rings
I was thinking this
Back Fire me coust by the carb choke had the same issue with mine
I change that exhaust back to stock that might fix your jetting issue and also if you listen to the video there's a slight tap

Those quads are lemons . but when there brand new and mint there a beast ..just to many problems ..everything has to be perfect
Try changing the muffler packing for the backfire
You got to have a better front push bar laying around that thing needs to go and will improve the value some .
look for small exhaust leak may be sucking in cold air and maybe change the plug
Backfiring is usually related to a timing issue.
That popping is most likely from the exhaust
The transmission is already broke in you could shift if you wanted to

Do those gloves actually keep your hands warm at all?

Nah, heads ticking like crazy. It’s boutta go.
Could be still running lean. Start it and rev it up and pull the choke out to see if it still backfires.
Idles perfect to me.
That type of exhaust when you downshift and let off the throttle it will backfire like that or let off the throttle it is OK make sure the fan works
