What Makes A Good Writing Teacher

You might think that a good teacher is someone who is "gifted."
The truth is perhaps the opposite.
I still remember having an AP English teacher write "banal" as the only comment on my essay. At the time, I never thought that eight years later, I would have my own academic work published in a journal.
I bring my own learning journey to the table every time I work with a student: I remember what it was like for me to learn how to write, and I empathize with those students who perhaps have not grasped that skill yet. I also know how I learned to write: what worked and what didn't, and I use that to be a better teacher for those students who do not come to writing naturally.
