    When growing Jasmine sambac, prune the tips in the spring and remove most of the leaves. Water it well and feed with a balanced fertilizer. It will put out growth from the the leaf nodes and flower profusely. After that first flush of blooming, it will rest for sometime before it blooms again. This plant blooms several times a year with rest breaks in between.

    Thanks for an informative video! Can j. sambac be grown indoors on a windowsill year round with no grow light and no cool dormant season? Like the conditions in an average living room windowsill. Will it be able to thrive and flower under those conditions? (light levels on a windowsill, even a south-facing one, are of course much lower than in a conservatory or greenhouse).

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The sambac doesn't require coolness. They require warm temperatures and high light levels to perform best. www.logees.com/media/care/pdf/Jasminum.pdf

    Thank you for great information on Jasmine growing. I live in Texas and I have a row of Sambac Jasmine plants, it's invaded by tiny white flies (not sure about the name may be angel bugs). All buds get burned and leaves are covered with black coating. I tried Neem oil one teaspoon + dish soap one teaspoon in half a gallon water and sprayed it in the evening. bugs disappear but comes back next day. I don't know how to control those bugs. I appreciate your advice.
    Thanks

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Try increasing the neem to 2 tbl/gal and 2 tbl/gal dish soap. Need to repeat it once a week for three times. Somewhere in the middle of one of the spraying, spray the plant with clear water to wash off any residual oil. The oil can accumulate on the leaves if not exposed to rain and under high heat damage can occur. The repeated spraying will increase the neem concentration in the leaves which helps repel the insects.

    Very informative can u tell us how to collect seeds from jasmine plant

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Most species don’t set seed very freely in cultivation. However seeds do form from time to time and perhaps more readily if there was pollination or cross pollination. The seed pulp will change color as in green to black and that is the time to harvest the seed. Remove all of the pulp and plant in a seed mix covering the seed ¼” keep evenly moist and warm. Germination may take a few weeks.

      Do the buds not develop or do they turn brown before opening. Has the light intensity changed as in the more shade. How about humidity? And change there.

    I have a grand duke that is SUPER long. It has 2, 3-4 feet long branches. I’m ready to trim it back. How far down should I cut it and if I cut say 2 feet off can I cut that into smaller pieces to propagate or should I leave it in one cutting?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      We generally suggest trimming by about 1/3 of the plants total growth as to not stress the plant. You can propagate the cuttings if you want to create more plants.

    can you please explain about winter care of jasmine (maid of orleans)..I am in zone 7..
    i suppose we need to keep plant in home..how much watering is needed? will it bloom in winter?

    • @LogeesPlants
      @LogeesPlants  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would want to keep the plant indoors for the winter time. Be sure to put it in a southern window where it can receive the most sunlight through the winter. They generally require 8 or more hours of direct sunlight per day to not go into a semi-dormant period. If needed, supplemental lighting can be beneficial to achieve this. Water only when the soil has completely dried out. As the plant is an everbloomer, if it receives the correct lighting throughout the winter, it can bloom through the season.

    • @PRAJJD
      @PRAJJD 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LogeesPlants :thanks for the reply..artificial light means yellow light? I have a small laundry room where its warm n yellow light is there.. so keeping there will it help?bcoz most of time its cloudy weather in winter so sunlight is not possible ..

    I was shopping for cement pots at a local grower in South-Texas (zone 10A) and I found two terrible looking plants that I recognized as some kind of Jasmine. I lived in the Philippines for a few years and I hoped these might be Sampaguita varieties. They have a very small leaf but are the proper shape and look to them. The most I could get out of the lady who spoke no English was that they were double blossom. She practically gave them to me (two for $5) I brought them home and got them transplanted into some nice roomy pots with good potting soil. We are in the middle of an extended heat wave where daily temps hover around 100 F. They look more verticle than bushy but they've been neglected. I'm watering them daily but I'm sure they are well drained and will respond shortly. The main stem is about an inch diameter. Should I prune them back severely or wait for more clues as to their real identity?

      I found out the answer today at our Native Plant Nursery, Niche Gardens. In Feb. we had a couple of days in the 80's which caused the sap in the plant to start running. Then when the weather got cold again those parts died. Kind of like the fruit trees that get hit with cold weather and don't bloom. :-( I will cut it back and hope it will re grow.

      Thanks for the response. I was wondering if the variety "Flore Plena" is a variety of its own, is a hybrid, or is another name for either "Arabian Nights" or "Mysore Mulli". Your website describes it as having a slow growth habit, and so if it is another name for an existing variety, sounds more like "Arabian Nights". I have head "Mysore Mulli" has a faster growth habit and is a freer flowering everbloomer.

    The best video on sambac I've seen yet. I do have a question: I have several jasmine plants grown in bright indirect light on my condo balcony - no sun, and I do get flowers, although not profusely. One plant is six years old and has gotten very woody with two half-inch "trunks" from which branches grow. I am trying to get it to grow laterally,. Could I cut through one of the "trunks" to shorten the growth or would this paralyze/kill that branch?
    Also, you mention spider mites but I find that in winter my plants always get infestations of scale. My plants hate winter, and I believe the stress causes it. ( I was born and reared in the Philippines where jasmine "sampaguita" is the national flower, as it is in India and other Southeast Asian countries.... I love this plant)

      You must be careful only true jasmines from the jasminum family are used in food. They are related to olive trees. So no night jasmine or jasmine like smelling flowers only jasminum.

      Are you currently fertilizing the plant? If so, how often and what is the NPK value on the fertilizer that you are using?

      @@LogeesPlants I'm so happy you replied. Thank you☺. I've had it for a few years and used to buy it vitamins and iron but it stopped flowering and I gave up on it. It's growing but I don't fertilize it. I live in the Mediterranean, so when you asked about the NPK thing, I'm sorry, I have no clue. My local nursery guy keeps selling me iron and vitamins whenever I ask him about it. Considering that I live outside the US and my nursery guy won't understand the nitrogen potassium levels, what should I look or ask for? I find potting mixes in the big grocery chains here. Is that what I need? Someone also told me to put banana peels in water and after two days water the plant with it. Any help or suggestions?

      I'm not sure what they have available in your area, but a general fertilizer with the Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium (NPK) levels below 15-15-15 with the middle number being the highest of the 3, but still below 15, would be best to induce blooms.

      @@LogeesPlants Thank you. I'll search around and see if I can find what you've suggested and let you know if it flowers again❤🌸

      Use fertilizer and water regularly. Prune carefully and remove dead leave.

      Depends where you live. In cold weather they die down and come back. In Asia they become a bush and get very tall. My yellow jasmine got to 12 feet plus once and i had to cut it down so it would not hit the roof.
