It's good that you're tackling this issue, a lot of trainees didn't even know what their getting into and what entails with their journey. The good thing now they are aware about how they need support and help. I know it was just small tidbit on what you talked about but I hope that it will be a standard practice to include a good support system for this industry.
Can we appreciate the effort she put in for the subtitles. An important topic like this one truly deserves to be understood by the largest audience possible
Honestly, thank you for making a video about mental health amongst kpop idols; I think it's really necessary. What you said is reasonable and realistic. While there is so much that companies can do, the very nature of the business is conducive to mental illness. The only difference between Hollywood and the kpop scene is that Hollywood stars are more upfront about their struggles. People like Justin Bieber, Billie Eilish, and Melanie Martinez are very open about their struggles. They allow you to see how traumatic stardom usually is. People in kpop are never that open. I feel like kpop stars are trained to keep their real feelings and views locked up. It can be incredibly lonely. One thing that worries me is how young some boys and girls are when they debut; the age of debut is getting younger and younger. This can be incredibly damaging to their mental health, especially when companies seem to prize their end goals above everything else. I personally bought into the whole perfect image that kpop stars sold for a very long time; when Jonghyun took his own life, it really woke me up to the reality that kpop stars, like all the Hollywood stars we hear about, have to grapple with the reality of their stardom. It looks great, but it comes at a high cost. It makes me grateful for my job, to be honest. The only thing that really stresses me is that there aren't enough hours in a day to get everything done. I don't deal with even a quarter of what the kpop stars have to deal with. Anyway, thank you Gina for a wonderful and insightful video. I'm really enjoying being subscribed to your channel.
I hope more people watch this especially young teens who dream of becoming a kpop star because they just seem to see the pretty side which is shown to them through kdramas and kshows.
Thank you very much for sharing this. It gives me a different perspective to see things. Despite in stages and reality shows, they don't show it (sadness, troubled, streesed, etc) and we often blinded bcs of how charimastic, grandeur of Kpop. This video remind me (and us) that even idols/trainees are humans too. So treat them as humane as possible, not solely for your own entertainment (fantasies) and business agenda.
i love your videos so much :( you totally deserve more! your dance and singing is so so amazing and it’s so good to hear advice and stories from someone who has experienced everything firsthand
Thanks for explaining your reasoning for not doing your own self produced music. I get it, knowing you're history now, etc. It really wouldn't be that much different than choosing songs to cover. If someone offered you a feature, like a duet with a known star, would you consider doing it now?
1. Your hair is fabulous in this. 2. Have you talked about image issues like, eating disorders or having to look a certain way to fit the image companies want and how that negatively affects trainees or idols? and are there issues with suicide rates in that realm? My heart just really breaks for those who are struggling for validation or trying to reach a goal that seems to be only in the control of what the company sees as profitable or on trend.
A great video covering a very important topic that is not often talked about, and also very relevant considering the current situation in the K-entertainment industry. This needs to be shown to all the trainees and potential trainees as part of orientation lol. Keep it up.
Just dropping a comment before I watch the video. Thank you for "prettifying" the intro with extra footage, using aesthetic backdrops, and finetuning the lighting, sound, and subtitles - your efforts are appreciated. Also, your hair and makeup is always on point. Would you feel comfortable doing a GRWM or tutorial, so you can give us pointers? If that's not your wheelhouse, that's cool. Just thought I'd ask :)
I agree 100% on a strong support system I'm from the States and I toured Asia for over 15 years and stress is a huge part of the entertainment business.i'm now training others to be in the business and doing my own things. love your videos and hope to hear some songs from you.
No surprise it's hard on mental health given how very competitive it is now. I mean, i have been following kpop since 2009 but in recent years i almost only listen to it because how it literally been an avalanche of amazing music and MVs. Also seeing these amazing post IOI bands failing (gugudan) or struggling (WeMe) kind of makes you wonder...how is it even possible?
I am an athlete and I can relate to what you said about the trainee, even when you are in the same team there is always rivalry between the members and when the coaches ask you how you are doing you won't tell him " OMG I am in so much pain my muscle are dying, I miss my family, can I take a day off?!" you just said "I am doing great!" Lol :). Thank you for your Videos !!
I've been binging your videos this past week without leaving comments but just wanted to say thank you Gina for sharing your experiences and how honest and thoughtful you are. 💞 I could listen to you speak on any subject probably simply because of your eloquence haha
Hello Gina. I stumbled upon your video today & have been binging em for the whole day. Everything is so wholesome & I especially love, love your voice!!! Your journey truly has shaped u to be this amazing, realistic & cool woman! I’m looking forward to watch more of your content & I appreciate the eng subs as well 🧡💙 btw, i think you’d sound incredible in Rebound by Woodz. Would love to hear your cover & take on it ❤️❤️
I agree on mental theraphist, but i prefer the trainee will ask help through their family/themself to ask help on their mental directly to mental therapist without through the company. Well, nowadaya to many young ages who has too many dreams/passi9n but too harder with themself. I think you might give an advice from your own experiences&how you solved when anything not happen as your planned. By the way, I love you keep moving forward&get any other multi-skilling you have rather think much about what you've been through when you was as a trainee 👍👍👍💪💪💪👏👏🤝🤝🤝🙏🙏🙏
You speak with so much clarity and everything you say is so concise love it! Just a note for future you touch your hair a lot when you speak and it was a lil distracting when you were talking Just an opinion might only be me aha😅
Hey, I got a questuon about weight management. ITZY Ryujin and some Twice members have been a bit thicker in 2019 and 2020 do you think JYP has broaden what he accepts? Secondly, IZ*ONE members were slim but had some thighs in their first year but they have slim down quite a bit around the beginning of 2020. Eunbi was always praised for her full and sexy figure but had lost it for a while. Do you think she was pressured to do so? What would be acceptable an acceptable weight for an Idol ? I know they often lie in their profile so how huge of gap is between the fiction and the reality? Are they all really pressured to get close to 100 lbs and under?
Hi Gina! I have a question. A lot of people say that some labels pay to dispatch so that they don't expose any bad news about their artists. I don't know if that's true but if it is, could you talk about it in a video? if you want :) thank you for all the videos! I enjoy them so much! 💗
As someone did work with media before, it's actually more normal than u think. Dispact would even send the pics first for the company, and make them have a deal with them. Sometimes it works, but yeah most of the time the company just don't care. They would usually go, 1) Silent 🤫, 2) the idols just do their business. Or 3), The idols don't give a shit.
6:21 Hmm..... A lot of interesting topics in this video. I always thought companies would really try and pick trainees who are ready to debut / fit well into the group. But didn't really consider that the trainees who don't fit will try to look like they do and pretend everything is good. Probably hurts both the company and the group in the end but I can understand why they do it.
I can see why trainees do it. It's not ideal, but it happens. It's like a ballet dancer carrying on through the agony, and surviving on painkillers, while hiding an injury from the company. They think that if they so much as breathe a word, they would be dropped from the line-up. Or worse, from the company. Sadly, sometimes they are right. I hope things are changing in the K-pop industry. It is no longer unknown for idols to take hiatuses for the sake of their mental health. Twice's Mina and Jeongyeon have taken breaks, and come back all the better for it. I hope other idols see this as a sign that mental health conditions can be managed, with the support of their label, and a treating team.
