Here’s some facts. Simmons didn’t mention anything to Philly about mental health until after they said they would fine him for not showing up to camp and games. Philadelphia has had 2 major sports athletes have time off for mental health with no problem(Lane Johnson, Brandon Brooks). The reason people have an issue with Ben is because he’s not telling the truth. He got kicked out of training camp for being a brat then when Philly says they aren’t going to pay him for sitting home he suddenly has “mental issues”. As someone that deals with major depression and anxiety it’s sad he went that route.

Think about it, if you can be "normal" and then all of sudden feel the need to off yourself the next day, what makes people think the opposite can't be true? Giving yourself a different environment is proven to be an effective way to begin the healing process often times. People just REFUSE to show grace and empathy. It's not that they can't, it's just against their nature to do so.
Mental health is real and people still associate it with the stigma of being crazy, insane, etc and belittle it which is wild to me. If you're not happy, or not yourself, or not growing how you want to, and it's affecting your temperament or mood and you can see/feel that, maybe it's time for you take a step back and reevaluate what you have going on and what you have surrounding you. I think the problem with Ben is pretty clear. He felt insecure about throwing free throws, it got so bad after the last Playoff game and he was so embarrased that he didn't wanted to go back to the court in Philly knowing the fans will boo him.
On top of that his team didn't support him and was asking him to do stuff he doesn't believe he can do.
So he wanted to change teams instead of facing his fears.

Otherwise players can just say they have mental health issues and use that as an excuse to sit out without being fined. My big thing on the mental health claim is that there are two very loud and prominent voices when it comes to mental health in the NBA. Kevin Love and Demar Derozan. Both have spoken out publically completely open and honest about their struggles. Ben Simmons is struggling with his mental health to the point he cannot play for the Sixers, he never reached out to those two? Neither of them defended his position? If the two most prominent voices for mental health awareness in the NBA have purposefully never gotten involved in the highest profile mental health dispute in the league, makes you question what they knew or thought of the situation.

Actual quote of Ben Simmons is as follows:
“The mental health has nothing to do with just the trade,” Simmons said. “It was a bunch of things that I was dealing with as a person, in my personal life, that I don’t really want to go in depth with.
“It wasn’t about the fans or coaches or comments made by anybody. It was just a personal thing for me that was earlier than that series or even that season that I was dealing with. That organization knew that. It was something that I continue to deal with, and I’m getting there and getting to the right place to get back on the floor.
“It was just piled up. A bunch of things that have gone over the years to where I just knew I wasn’t myself and I needed to get back into that place of being myself and being happy as a person and taking care of my wellbeing. That was the major thing for me. It wasn’t about the money, anything like that. I want to be who I am and get back to playing basketball at that level and be myself.”
The first sentence statement that is focused upon is unclear and can be construed many ways. Stephen A. interprets it as BS saying that the trade had nothing to do with mental health. But it can also be construed that: 1. it was not "just" the trade that was influenced/impacted by his mental health issues; or 2. there were other considerations in addition to his mental health which led to the trade.
In context though with the rest of what he said, it appears that he has had mental health issues influenced/made worse by other issues.

It’s extremely possible. Mental health sneaks up tbh one doesn’t just wake up and say “I’m not well” we don’t even notice ourselves when it starts that’s how it can pile up and get so bad. We’re all seemingly fine until we’re not, the tiny weights get big. Could he be lying absolutely, however he could also be telling the truth. Either way it is sad.

Mental health problems are personal problems, so Stephen A was wrong on that front. However, Simmons' mental health claims are still a bit suspicious, even though they should not be completely dismissed.

Great point! Accusing Simmons of faking his mental health status is a slippery slope. However, his situation has seemed somewhat suspicious this whole time. I'm sure mental health symptoms can show up in many ways, but his "issues" seemed to coincide with all the criticism he received after the playoffs from fans, teammates and his own coach. Speaking on behalf of people suffering with these issues, would go a long way in the court of public opinion. He certainly has a huge platform to affect a lot of people.

Well not really. We’re going off the words of Ben himself. He classified his issues as “Not mental health, but personal problems”. So Ben made the distinction, not everyone else.

You’re saying it’s suspicious that he suddenly developed a mental health issue the moment his coach criticized him and then suddenly lost the mental health issue the moment he was traded? Nah that’s not suspicious, that’s how mental health issues work. They show up suddenly and disappear suddenly, happens all the time. In case anyone is wondering I’m being sarcastic.
