The PROBLEM with UNPROTECTED Carbon Fiber for FIELD USE ~ Rex Reviews

  • Should you paint a carbon fiber barrel? The answer must be dictated by your use and context. Rex paints his Remington 700 .243 Win custom rifle with Helix 6 carbon fiber barrel and EP-5 7-35x56 scope. Why paint carbon fiber? FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION. This is a LAW of design. If the function of your rifle is to be a "safe queen" expressing style and elegance, then the appropriate polished and clean form will follow. If the function is FIELD USE, then a different form may be warranted.
Why paint a carbon fiber rifle barrel? 4 reasons:
    1. Camouflage or field use
    2. Photo-degradation of poxy resin
    3. Chemical-degradation of poxy resin
    4. Mechanical abrasion and fraying of fiber ends where barrel was cut and contoured.
    Enjoy!

Hey Rex, have you ever seen a basalt fiber barrel? It may actually be a better material for the application. Basalt fiber has really good thermal properties, isn't as stiff as carbon fiber and is really wear resistant. It seems like you could use essentially the same process to wrap the barrel with basalt fiber as they do with carbon fiber. The price would seemingly be about the same since the material costs are likely not much different. BTW, if you haven't ever looked at the properties of basalt fiber like EM and Thermal it is a fun study. Yep, it's made out of igneous rocks. The Russians did a lot with it.

I understand why people want the carbon fiber wrapped barrels with heat dissipation and weight savings. But I will stick with top quality stainless steel barrels like Bartlein or Brux or Hart, etc… half the price and a lot less fuss. Leave it polished or Cerakote or rattle can and when it wears off rattle can it again.

The worst part of SS. Is overall barrel life. Great accuracy early on but generally the overall life span I much shorter than nitride

My buddy is a competitive bicycle guy. He stopped by the house one day while out riding. The bike he had that day is carbon fiber. I hadn't seen one up close up until that day. It's as light as a feather. I was shocked at how light it was. I know these guys ride hard for hours on end, so these frames are the real dealio. That said, when I look at Rex's rifle here, there's literally no way I could rattle can anything that spendy or purty. I've never rattle canned a firearm i own, and I promise you, my best one ain't near what this one is. LOL

There might be some crazy exceptions out there somewhere, but for the most part all carbon fiber composites will act as a thermal insulator especially compared to steel. I'm sure someone one will disagree, but I have a NASA study, a scientific journal article, a commercial testing equipment manufacturer article, and a material supplier's blog post in front of me. They all agree that carbon fiber composites have a thermal conductivity of less than 10 W/m-K across a large spectrum of temperatures. This is in the transverse direction to the plane of the fiber. Some types of the fibers themselves can be much higher in the longitudinal plane (from one end of the "string" to the other), but in this context the fibers need to be perpendicular to the pressure it is designed to contain which means that it will also be perpendicular to the heat gradient. You can also look up and see that the thermal conductivity of 416R stainless steel is around 25-29 W/m-K, mild steel is around 50 W/m-K, copper is around 350-400 W/m-K, and Aluminum is around 200-250 W/m-K. They all conduct heat much better than the carbon fiber composites.

I would get paint that protects against UV sunlight. You should see what happens to carbon fiber car hoods after day to day sunlight exposure.

Very true!! But more or less too make the paint last as long as possible before degrading itself, and then compromising the carbon fiber

Glad to hear you mention the physics of the matrix. This is almost universally ignored in the brochures, in which salesmen wax eloquent about superior heat dissipation, whereas the matrix is virtually guaranteed to slow heat dissipation compared to a standard barrel. As you said, the datasheet for carbon fiber does indicate superiority, but there are multiple reasons why in the foreseeable future you'll not come close in a real-world example.

If you accidentally spraypaint over something that wasnt covered, a q-tip and 90% isopropyl, carb cleaner, fnp remover, etc. will clean it off easily.

Having just built our first rifle with a CF wrapped barrel, I’m still a bit concerned about the integrity over time. We used a Bartlein 5R in an M24/M40 contour in 1:8 twist at 22” for backcountry hunting. Paired with a Harvester 300 suppressor, the 7MM projectiles stack up on one another down range, so I’m very happy with the precision. I cannot come to terms in painting it until the warranty is up though…

On fabric covered planes you do a silver coat for UV protection. It's a base with aluminum powder in it. Paint by itself will give minimal protection from UV.
