    I come back to this frequently.
    Furtwängler blows me away every time.
    These wartime recordings are amazing.
    It has been said many times that when people are under a huge amount of stress it results in the most amazing humanity and I think these wartime recordings especially in the final years when it was obvious that the war was lost are a testament to that.

      These German recordings, both in the concert hall and the recording studio, are culturally priceless. They take Beethoven to another level entirely. What you say about creativity under extremely trying conditions puts me in mind of my own favorite Elgar recording, Symphony no.2, by Adrian Boult and the BBCSO made just a few months after this. The orchestra had been evacuated due to the flying bombs, and made the recording in the hall of Bedford school, and just a couple of days after Sir Henry Wood had died.
      The resultant performance was a powerful piece of visceral emotion, which, even with the technical advances of the 80 intervening years, is still as electrifying today.

      I shall check out the Elgar
      Thanks.
      Just the same as you, I think some of the most amazing performances are made when people are suffering the most psychological stress.
      Same goes for other forms of culture, like art, writing and films. Even contemporary popular music.

    Wilhelm Furtwängler n’a jamais été égalé dans l’interprétation des symphonies de Beethoven et de Brahms. La force tellurique, la formidable vitalité et la profondeur émotionnelle de ses interprétations sont tout simplement inouïes. Furtwängler avait une conception organique de la musique : donner vie à une œuvre par-delà les notes de la partition. Chaque concert était une nouvelle naissance pour les grands chefs-d’œuvre de la Musique.

    The last few minutes show why WF was so great. He generates a wild excitement but it never sounds forced, it all sounds spontaneous yet thought through. He was one of a kind. His recording of the Schumann 4th is like that too.

    • @1brewski2
      @1brewski2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He liked to whip things up in the 4th movement of symphonies. That doesn't make him not great. It also doesn't make him great. OK, he was great either way. He had the offer of the Chicago job after the war but the musicians rebelled and the offer was withdrawn. He wasn't a nazi, but too close to one for the orchestra members, I guess.

    • @tobiolopainto
      @tobiolopainto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1brewski2 He was sympathetic to Nazis. He collaborated with them, threw the Jews out of his orchestra, and played at Hitler's birthday. The Chicago Symphony Orchestra had Jews, so, of course they didn't want Furtwangler. A couple of quotes might help. Here's Bruno Walter in a letter to Furtwangler
      (from the booklet from Bel Canto Society's ...................
      Great Conductors of the Third Reich:
      Art in the Service of Evil. The booklet is by Frederic Spotts)
      "Please bear in mind that your art was used over the years as an extremely effective means of foreign propaganda for the regime of the devil; that you, thanks to your personal fame and great talent, performed valuable service for this regime and that in Germany itself the presence and activities of an artist of your rank helped to provide cultural and moral credit to those terrible criminals or at least gave considerable help to them....In contrast to that, of what significance was your helpful behavior in individual cases of Jewish distress?"
      (January 1949).
      and this is from Goebbels diary:
      "Furtwangler practically is bursting with nationalist enthusiasm. This man has undergone a profound transformation which it gives me a great pleasure to witness. I fought for years to win him over and can now see success. He...is very willing to put himself at my disposal for any work I may require of him (Feb, 1942)"
      As a human being, Furtwangler left much to be desired. He was a great conductor, though. We have to live with the facts of Furtwangler's life. Luckily we have his music, not just his life.

    • @1brewski2
      @1brewski2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tobiolopainto Once he decided to stay in Germany and keep working, he had to go along. But I read half a life ago that he wouldn't play concerts in conquered territory. That task fell to Karajan and others. Do you know if that's true?

    • @tobiolopainto
      @tobiolopainto 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@1brewski2 Get the dvd I referenced in my earlier comment. Read what Spotts and Zucker have to say about Furtwangler and all the other Nazis or sympathizers. It's not pretty. Furtwangler, according to Zucker and Spotts, "willingly cooperated with Goebbels in promoting German Cultural propaganda abroad--in Paris, Oslo Copenhagen, Malmo, Stockholm and Upsalla. Most disgracefully, he performed in Prague in 1940 at a performance arranged by Goebbels to celebrate the German takeover of Czechoslovakia and returned to conduct there in 1944." I believe all of the cities mentioned were in "conquered territory." Furtwangler did as he was told to do by Goebbels. He didn't need to be a member of the party (he was Vice President of the Reich Music Chamber) he believed the whole Nazi line of hostility, hatred and fear. He was a scumbag. But he was a great conductor. What can you do?

    • @hansmahr8627
      @hansmahr8627 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Furtwängler did not fire the Jews in the Berlin Philharmonic. Quite the opposite, he refused to fire them. When he was performing in Mannheim, the organizers demanded that the Jewish concertmaster should be replaced by a local violinist who was a party member. Furtwängler didn't do it and swore afterwards that he would never perform in Mannheim again. In the beginning of the Third Reich Furtwängler tried to convince Goebbels and Hitler that their antisemitic policies were killing cultural life in Germany. His talk with Hitler turned into a shouting match with both men insulting each other. Jewish musicians came to him for protection and he tried to help them, for example by helping them find jobs in other countries. Goebbels wrote in his diary at one point 'Is there a Jew in Berlin that isn't under Furtwängler's protection?' (I'm paraphrasing, I don't have the exact quote at the moment). There's also a Goebbels quote from 1944 where he says that Furtwängler was never a national socialist. This was understood by everyone in the upper echelons of the Nazi party (they listened to his phone calls with his secretary).
      Concerning his concerts: yes, there were some concerts in occupied countries. He didn't want to do it but was pressured by Goebbels. He usually only performed pieces from composers of that country. Of course that was only a mild gesture but at times he also donated the money he made there to opponents of the Nazis who were in exile.
      Then of course there's the famous concert on Hitler's birthday in 1942, usually seen as a sign of Furtwängler's complicity with the Nazis. But as usual with Furtwängler, there's more to it. Furtwängler hated being used by the Nazis for propaganda purposes but he was in a bind. He knew that he would be asked to conduct at Hitler's birthday so he planned a tour in April. However, Goebbels learned about it and canceled the tour, afterwards ordering Furtwängler to perform. Still, he went to some lengths to avoid having to do the Hitlergruß. And the year after that Furtwängler got a certificate from a doctor saying that he was too sick to perform. The doctor was a member of the resistance group Kreisauer Kreis. Furtwängler was friends with many members of the resistance, including Stauffenberg. There was a general understanding among the resistance that Furtwängler hated the Nazis.
      I could go on. Basically, Furtwängler was a complicated human being and his relationship with the Nazis was much more complex than most people are aware of. There's a lot of misinformation out there. I'm not trying to completely absolve Furtwängler of any responsibility but to say that he was a Nazi who supported Nazi ideology and who loved working for them is ridiculous. He certainly wasn't a vicious antisemite as is proven by his actions during the Third Reich. In fact he repeatedly denounced racism of any kind in the notebooks that he kept during that era. Of course he was a man of his time, there were some prejudices, but he wanted nothing to do with the racial policies of the Nazis. And of course in the end, he had to flee because his life was in danger.

      You should really listen to Hans Knappertsbusch's Parsifal, he is the gold standard for Parsifal and will always be. Listen to either the 1951 (more profound and spiritual, slower tempos) performance or the 1962 (better audio and more audible dynamics). Knappertsbusch reaches a spiritual dimension that will never be equaled. It's a shame that there aren't any full Parsifal recordings from Furtwangler.

    Анализ Аллегретто (2ч.) Чем проще музыкальный материал, тем сложнее его исполнить - таков парадокс, ничего тут не поделаешь. Как раз по исполнению медленной части и можно судить об истинном исполнительском уровне музыканта-художника. Поэтому останавливаю внимание на анализе 2 части. Вот это я понимаю: гениально, спасибо, что подарили такое наслаждение. Высочайший уровень мастерства. Утонченная игра красочной палитрой нюансировки и др...Подход к кульминации и сама кульминация "захватила" мое сердце. Это точно не может оставить равнодушным музыканта. Прочтение на том уровне, когда начинаешь читать мысли самого Бетховена...Браво, я говорю "браво.

      Так. Но, слушая это, я иногда получаю самое странное чувство, что Бетховен как-то просто раскрыл музыку, которая уже была заморожена в Космосе, ожидая освобождения. Скульптор Микеланджело, как говорят, работал таким образом, визуализируя законченную скульптуру в каменном блоке.
      Но это не важно. Важно то, что эта музыка, это откровение, этот рай звуков, отражающихся во времени за пределами всего воображения.
      Сожалею. Я становлюсь немного метафизическим, когда сталкиваюсь с таким величием!

    In the rehersal of the 2nd movement (August 15, 1951 with the Lucern Festival Orchestra) Furtwängler explained many things like:
    - "eine Stimme von oben" - a voice from above;
    - "ohne Ausdruck in den Holzbläsern" - without expression in the wood wings (just try to do so!)
    - "schwer" - heavy "Ja-ba-ba-ba-Ba-ba-ba-ba-bam!"
    I fully agree with these (and more) explanations by Furtwängler! A completely new insight into Beethoven's music was opened by this partly recorded rehersal! You can order this Lucerne Festival recordings on the net.
