  • In this episode De Vrouwe Linda the Dutch Sailing Tjalk barge, make a canal journey to IJlst beside Sneek in Friesland Netherlands. Rob Kabel and I collect the timber needed to be carved into the mast. It’s Douglas Fir and it’s big. We also drop off the old mast to be chopped into floor boards by the old windmill. An historic boat meets an historic windmill.

That windmill looks an interesting place to visit. I totally admire these craftsmen who keep skills from the past alive and kicking

Wow - so much of interest there! What a wonderful sawmill and I LOVE the huge boat under sail you passed on the canal. Would like to know more of her! I recall coming back up the River Orwell in a Bawley under sail (constant tacking) we were overtaken by a 100 ton Thames Barge. So we hoisted top'sl and gave chase - couldn't catch her. She had shallow draught we had a bloody great keel, so she was able to use the whole width of the river. Great fun! P.S. we keep Rats!

That’s really interesting, I’m editing the next video and we moor up beside the biggest Thames Barge ever built called “Will” registered at Maldon, current moored at the Hermatage Moorings at Tower Bridge, London. I wonder if it was the same barge you tried to catch....
I wish I was able to get back to the Windmill to get more footage but Covid has forced my hand. I had to escape while I could!

They didn’t charge me anything! It’s a tourist attraction and they chop up wood for fun!

Loved the hair flip. Did you live at the boat with, no, electricity, no water, no etc., for that year?

I was traveling back and forth so I was only there occasionally. I did have a mains hook up, but no running water. I washed in a bucket!😂

@@canicebannon thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I am trying to catch up as fast as I can. It is addictive. I have no clue what you are doing , except raising and lowering the mast….a lot. But your presentation is so different from other Vloggers., it is a lot of fun. Great job 👏🏼

please fix the ridiculous volume difference between your voice and your music. Your earlier videos were ear-destroying with the difference in volume and this video is also very annoying.

Ah! Yes, so that video was one of my first videos and I was learning as I go. I don’t think you are alone in bringing this up, but certainly now the videos are better in terms of levels, or at least it’s not coming up in the comments, other things are coming up! 😂 The editing software I use automatically sets the volume, but in this video I may have been messing about with it. Unfortunately, I don’t keep the video after it’s uploaded onto TH-cam as I don’t have the means to store the originals, which means I can’t change them retrospectively...
Thank you for watching from the beginning! You’re very brave!! Hahaha!

@@canicebannon I'm on video #10 right now and quite enjoying it. I am trying to learn more about Dutch Barges, their differences from British narrowboats, and their all-around "What is this thing?" and as a resource your videos are tremendously helpful because they're one of the only ones of their kind.
I am aiming for a future for myself wherein I live on a dutch barge, moored somewhere in the netherlands so seeing the real life of it is very helpful.
