i was so excited with my slow growing hair, someone said to me, "are you serious, you have been growing your hair for 4 years?" lol, i felt like crawling under a freakin rock.
This is the only channel I can watch about hair that doesn’t make me feel even worse. One thing I might add, hair is probably one of the most important tributes to your appearance, so it bothers me when other people act like it isn’t a big deal. It is really frustrating that your hair is the thing keeping you from doing anything because you simply don’t want to put up with it. I personally get really annoyed whenever I look in a mirror and see it knowing I WANT to do something with it, but all the hairstyles I want to do aren’t possible with my natural hair.
I’m about to cry here. How many times I tried and failed when following instructions from hair tutorials from TH-camrs with thickly hair. Now I know why and it means the world to me that I’m not alone!!!
You are absolutely right. I had a reality check one day when one of those ladies with thick hair on TH-cam said to go in the mirror and look at what you are dealing with. Yep, I looked and I saw sparse density hair. And to boot gray hair. At that time I never heard of "sparse density hair." So no I wasn't going to get all those thick coils. Years ago I had a friend that had that thick long hair and she pointed out that she had more hair follicles per square inch than me. No she wasn't throwing shade just making my young self aware that hairstyles would look different on my hair than her's. She was older than me & we would talk about maintaining our own beauty.
There isn't a lot of representation for us in the natural hair community. I can't do mini twists and have it look good. I can't do a lion mane because I end up with gaps. When it's short, it looks like I have a ton. When it grows out you see the gaps and it flops over. Fluffing doesn't help it just makes me frizzy because I can't hide that I'm still sparse. I have to style it or else I look like I'm on crack.
I’m glad you spoke about this. There are so many people who confuse tighter textures with thicker hair. I have fine 4c hair and low density but people think it’s thick because of the way I comb out my twists outs (not really twist outs because you can’t see any twists). IT’S AN ILLUSION!!!
Reasons sparse density hair is good: 1: Cornrows and box braids look nice longer. Because the parts between your braids are bigger so there is a longer amount of time before the hair underneath the braids starts to puff up from growing out 2: Less time for styling. Although it may take more time to care for and keep healthy styling is much quicker because there's simply less hair to do which means a quicker time doing things like braid out's and less money spent to get your hair styled 3: It's great for wigs. If you like wearing wigs as a protective Style having less hair is great because it makes it much easier to keep flat to your scalp then a large amount of hair which can cause a wig to look bulky on your head if your hair isn't braided down really well 4: More breathable. If your scalp is more exposed your hair can get the air it needs to "breathe" and stay healthy and your scalp will have better circulation from things like changes in temperature as this keeps the blood vessels and blood flow in your scalp more active 5:YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE ❤❤❤❤❤ Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
As someone with thick (I know, basically the "first world" of hair problems) I agree. I try to braid my hair but it just looks like I pulled it into a ponytail because you cant see my scalp between the braids. And I shave the sides of my head, but my hair is so thick it didn't look any different. 😥
Hold on dear. U r not in it alone. Just don't braid your hair too much. Just wear your hair in cornrolls n moisturize it for a month. Wash it n repeat. I works
Wow, you think you've got thin hair. You're hair is beautiful, wait until u get the bozo thinning crown sliding to the back. Then you can complain, enjoyed your video.
I’ve accepted that my hair is fine, and that’s fine ( 😉 get it) lmao no but fr, representation really does matter cause i was really our here thinking something was wrong with me, knowing full well my mom also has fine 4b hair, but these natural hair youtubers have FULL full hair. I’m glad I found this channel 😫
@@speaksister Silk or satin scarves for sure, they're key. Warm oil masks help but maybe this is more a high porosity hair thing. Lately I found the Aunt Jackie's Knot on my watch detangler and the Coco wash very useful! Not magic, but less intense!! 😜
Oh my gosh, mine too. It's like the strands love each other so much that they're always hugging!!! I don't like twist outs due to my sparse density and a wash and go looks better but I lose so much hair when it is time to shampoo cause the curls are all intertwined!! But I love my hair cause, like you said, some people "ain't" got none 😁
Sammeeeee, but I found that if I detangle between wash days and moisturize and seal then on wash days it's a lot better and helps with shedding. Also, a trick I learned, put your favorite moisturizer and water in an applicate or mist bottle, and then just apply it straight to your scalp and massage it, then top it off and apply a little bit of oil and massage again and baby dryness and tangling/matting are put in her place.
I am 70 and I have had "sparse density" hair ALL my life, can you believe that? :-))). It has ALL the characteristics of 4C hair and then some. I can appreciate your realness about your own hair. OK, you 70 and watch this channel, okkkkkk(in my Kevin Hart voice) then I can get over my age and watch her(wait! you not secretly her Grandma are you?..lol)cause my kids are her age, but she is very funny and keeps my attention.
@@vernloves2560 No, we are NOT related, that I know of, in any way. She is not a match on by DNA match list (LOL). i love that you're talking about this because i have friends with this type of hair and that are natural with NO forms of hair loss issues. I'm working on my issue with high-porosity atm lol
Sparse density hair, big found face, and a large head makes me always look like I have some hair loss issues. Having a hard time to love attempting to love my 4 c thin natural hair..
This is my hair! I thought something was wrong with my hair but you helped me figure it out that I just have sparse, thin 4c hair. You are so beautiful girl.
I truly do not understand how you always manage to be a perfect blend of educational, soothing and absolutely hilarious. Your personality is so dope! This was awesome, thank you!
Thank God for your existence. I grew up getting relaxers and presses so I honestly have no clue what my natural hair type is. But my 10 year old is definitely 4c and most of it just broke off after a two month protective style. I'm good with relaxed hair but am a fish out of water with her curls and coils. You give us hope. She watched this video with me and I watched her disappointment and hopelessness melt away as she laughed and understood you in ways she couldn't with other youtubers. So thank you so much. You helped get my star player's head in the game.
Oh my goodness....it never occurred to me that because my natural hair is thin, that’s why the styles I saw other natural girls wear didn’t work for me!!! Thank you for speaking on this 😫
Ysabeau99, I understand, it looks weird when I try but what I have found (it may not work for you) is if I wear my hair out in a fro and use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, it makes my hair look thicker. Although my hair is very fine, it is long, passed my shoulder but so fine it doesn't matter how I wear it, it doesn't look good but because I have some length, I get away with patting it down soo much that it looks thick, but if you comb it out....yeah lol!
Im so grateful for this video. Im 4c and have "sparse density" as well. Ive been so paranoid about this for a while because my mindset was always, if you have natural hair your hair is supposed to be super thick. So im grateful to have seen this video and know Im not alone and there's nothing wrong with me, it just is what it is. My hair is healthy and is bra-strap length and it continues to grow. Thanks for sharing😊😊
I put grease on my scalp; any solid oil at room temperature. Alopecia and dryness all gone. Head full of thick hair. My favorite grease is Softee costs 1 dollar at the dollar store. Keep scalp oil, rinse with hot water on wash day. Braid at night and comb out every morning. Try it; cant hurt. I have 4d hair. Courser and Dryer than anyone I see on the tube.
@@sheilao92 I started using grease again not too long ago. I thought about how full and long my hair was as a child when all my mom did was grease and hot comb 😂😂 im not as consistent as I should be with it, but thanks for the tip! I like Softee too because they have variety and their products smell really good too
Other "I have Type 4 Hair" TH-camrs: *Takes out twistout-braid out, hair moves, swings, shakes* Me: *takes out twist out* *hair literally doesn't move when I shake my head at all* Thanks for making a video for us type 4's whose hair doesn't swing around.
shazz286 like LITERALLY. Mine does not move unless these hands or that afro pic move it. And even then it’s iffy. I’ve just started using bobbi pins to make the hair on the sides & front. I don’t know what else to do.
I FELT THIS SO HARD!!! THIS is my life for real! I have to work really really hard not to get depressed every time I see someone on TH-cam or IG with this gorgeous “do” that can only be accomplished by someone with the thickest hair on the planet. I remember the first time I tried doing two strand twists as a (what I thought would be) a cute protective style, only to find out that my twists only looked thick if I didn’t do more than 8-10 twists in my entire head! As an added bonus, my hair has different hair types - the back is 4a, the sides are 4b, and smack at the top and crown where my hair is the thinnest, it’s a cottony 4c and will not in any way shape or form - no matter what type or how much product I use or how long I keep it twisted - hold a curl. It will immediately turn back to cottony fuzz. But, like you, I am grateful that at least I’m not bald. And I am grateful that I found you so that I can be reassured that there are others out there like me. It’s frustrating to not have much representation on TH-cam, socials, or commercials. So I’ll happily subscribe to you.
I’ve been so upset cause me hair doesn’t grow how I want it. It’s not thick at all. I went natural with intention to heal my hair and hopes to be full but turns out my hair is just thin.i cried so much about it but your video has helped me. Thank you
This was me last week. I hate doing my hair everyday. So I twist it up just to take a break from being in it, and then I look in the mirror and want to cry because I hate how thin it looks when I strait up spend hours twisting. There is always weave but sometimes you get tire of weave and just want to be free 🙄
@@latashawiller8559 omg you are so correct I stopped relaxing because my hair is so thin I been natural for 3 years but I always wear weave, wigs or crotchet hair..I am tired of it all but my natural hair is a mess!!!
I have thin fine natural hair and lemme tell you.... I just cut her off the other day because I couldn’t with her. We’re gonna call her puff mama. Puff mama doesn’t want me to have edges. Puff mama doesn’t want me to have a nice silk press. Puff mama turns to cotton as soon as it hits 60 the grease. Puff mama wants to be see through in the sun. Puff mama will get ruined after a little wind. Puff mama doesn’t want me to win out here so I had to cut her owff!!! 😤. She’s doing a little better now.
I have thin fine hair too 😭 I think my hair is a wee bit more thin than Danielle in some places. I naturally have super duper thin edges too. Everyone used to say "you need to stop wearing weaves and massage it with castor oil". I've never worn a weave in my life. I was born with no edges lol. Sadly, I can never do a braid out or twist out. By the time I separate enough to hide my scalp, it's an afro. It's 4a in the back, 4c in the middle and 4b front. Which is STUPID because the middle of my hair shrinks up like crazy.
@MeShannon This is me almost exactly. My hair at the nape of my neck is so annoying being 4a and sparse. There's literally no curl or kink there. Then the crown is 4c and hard to deal with. Not to mention when I have to fluff forever to hide my scalp.🤦
@@125loopy Tell me about it! I can't do baby hairs for nothing! Dying my hair black helped a little, but it still doesn't show out like the girls with thicker hair. I also hate unsolicited advice from people who have no clue about dealing with thin/fine hair. Mine is 3c/4a in the front, 4a in the back, and I have a piece thats 4b in the center of my head. Back when I wore weave that one time, I always wondered why my sew-in looked weird when I first got it and it was because I didn't have enough hair on my edges to cover up that track 😂😭. I just want Edges man 😭

I'm only seeing this now and glad I did. I have sparse density hair. Twist outs are scary on me looking like I've been electrocuted, messy, and thin. I see these girls with their luscious thick hair and think erm greedy why you got my share of hair give it back! 😭 my hair has been like this since I was born. Growing up I didnt have much hair. Even when I had a relaxer many years ago, my hair was thin. I've always had fine hair. My hair has to always be styled nicely! But I've embraced my 4c sparse density hair. Thank you for the video.
My hair is JUST like that!!! Omg I haven’t found anyone on TH-cam with similar hair texture. I got so fed up wit my hair I cut it all off! I been happy ever since . Thank god for wigs.. but you are absolutely beautiful
I did the same thing about a year ago. I got so tired of my hair, and it not looking good, So I shaved my head. I saw some women on TH-cam sharing theirs. They looked attractive and they said that they felt so free.
I thought it was just me. My hair is a bit less sparse than yours, so I can wear mini twist. But no matter how thick my roots are my hair still looks thin. I remember the 1st time I braided my hair for a braid out and I was like where did my hair go.
I can relate on the question "where did my hair go?"😭😭 i can't wear Bantu knots outside as a style because of that. I have high density but my strands are so fin.
I’m so glad there’s videos of “thin” 4C hair. It’s so hard to find videos that really pertain to my hair. My hair has so much space and I put in mini twist (but only to put up in a ponytail) and it’s looks thin and scraggly at times. For the longest, I wondered why my hair never turned out like the ones in videos. Now I know and am not alone. Thank you!!!!!
Girl yes!!! Represent!! We have been being deceived this whole time thinking our hair can be as thick as that! At least I have, but I have/will come to terms with it and accept it!!
My hair is exactly the same! Omg. Thank u for making this video cause I’m always wondering why everybody else’s 4c natural hair is thick. I shaved my head completely thinking my hair was gonna grow in thicker and was disappointed lmao I just gave up. I like my hair when it’s a short Afro now rather than it being grown out. The longer it grows the more the thinnest wants to show out. “It’s important to recognize realities but still be grateful” love that By the way: your eyes are so pretty!! & ur skin is flawless 👌🏾
When you looked at the camera and said “this is your best friend” (about the pick) I just became so aware that you are a black girl talking to me, a black girl. Which is totally fine and ain’t no shade at all but.. It’s nice to get some exclusivity like everyone else sometimes. Only we eat here. Thanks for talking to me. Subscribed.
I am white with straight hair and I can’t stop watching her videos, it’s the quallity content that attracts, not catering to everyone like most youtubers these days, I agree :)
Ugh where has this girl been my whole life? I have fine, thin soft short 4b hair. Protective style they say, how can I when the hair starts to look ancient after 3 days? So I feel like I'm in an endless cycle where it never gets past my neck.
Two strand twists are my hair's protective go to for my fine, soft, thin, 4b hair. It's the only protective style that my hair will tolerate. My hair grows to at least bra strap length with two strand twists. Now if I could just convince my edges to stop disappearing every other year, we'd be in business. 😫😫😫😫
It was the Red Sea part for me! My hair was thicker before and then I’ve had 5 children and after my last 3 my hair has NEVER been the same....LOVE LOVE LOVE YOUR HONESTY N UR HILARIOUS!!!!!!
Yeah, my "thick" hair is definitely an illusion. After I wash it I need like 2-3 days for the volume of my hair to come back to life. When I braid my own hair without adding fake hair... I look like a giant 3 year old.
You’re my hair twin!! I thought I was the only one. I keep shaving my hair thinking it will grow back thicker but no ..... this is how it is. We have the same struggles with styles too.

As a white girl with fine, sparse density hair who thinks natural hair is super beautiful, it's nice to know that there are women with natural hair that is also sparse and fine. It's definitely easy to get the impression that all natural hair is super thicc and voluminous. My fine, sparse blond hair looks totally different than your hair, and yet all of the pros and cons that you mentioned are true of me as well. I don't know if it's true to the same extent, but hair ads and standards for people with straight, flat hair are also about that thick, luscious hair.
Sara Whear I’m the same, have fine straight brown hair and always felt a bit self conscious about it. Everyone in the media has ridiculous amounts of hair, although many have extensions in. It’s interesting to know that a similar culture exists for people of colour.
You know, speaking of things not talked about. Imma need a natural hair product with an advert showing a TWA 👀 afros don't magically grow out the size of your head all shaped and whatnot 😩 show us the baby stages too
Problem : fine strands, big forehead and trash edges Benefits : I am a MASTER at a head wrap (to cover said forehead and edges) AND braiding my hair down Im practically bald which is a GREAT base for crochet braids, wigs or sew ins. 🤷🏾♀️ # versatility #chameleon

I’m glad you spoke about this. There are so many people who confuse tighter textures with thicker hair. I have fine 4c hair and low density but people think it’s thick because of the way I comb out my twists outs (not really twist outs because you can’t see any twists). IT’S AN ILLUSION!!!
You can have fine 4C hair and still have thick hair (which means you have a lot of strands of hair on your head).
Girl same lol except I'm 4B...Like my bun may look big but if you squish it it's really 50% air
@@aprild.3232 I know that, but thanks for putting that out there for others.
@@FKAthicccs that's true. I have fine and high dense hair
@@xtelfolaj As do I 😊
Reasons sparse density hair is good:
1: Cornrows and box braids look nice longer. Because the parts between your braids are bigger so there is a longer amount of time before the hair underneath the braids starts to puff up from growing out
2: Less time for styling. Although it may take more time to care for and keep healthy styling is much quicker because there's simply less hair to do which means a quicker time doing things like braid out's and less money spent to get your hair styled
3: It's great for wigs. If you like wearing wigs as a protective Style having less hair is great because it makes it much easier to keep flat to your scalp then a large amount of hair which can cause a wig to look bulky on your head if your hair isn't braided down really well
4: More breathable. If your scalp is more exposed your hair can get the air it needs to "breathe" and stay healthy and your scalp will have better circulation from things like changes in temperature as this keeps the blood vessels and blood flow in your scalp more active
5:YOU ARE BEAUTIFUL JUST THE WAY YOU ARE ❤❤❤❤❤
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk
Maggie Mgee thank you 🖤
Good points! As someone with "sparse density" hair, the breathable part got me... I'm always trying to cover up my parts actually...
As someone with thick (I know, basically the "first world" of hair problems) I agree. I try to braid my hair but it just looks like I pulled it into a ponytail because you cant see my scalp between the braids. And I shave the sides of my head, but my hair is so thick it didn't look any different. 😥
True! My hair never requires more than 2/3 packs of weave which does save money!
😅😅
My head is gigantic, on top of having thin 4c hair. The struggle is real cause I lost some edges😫I'm 19 and look 75.
Poor girl!! Check your diet

Hold on dear. U r not in it alone. Just don't braid your hair too much. Just wear your hair in cornrolls n moisturize it for a month. Wash it n repeat. I works

Mine is sparse density too, but tangles like crazy. CRAZY.
Lol, same😂😂

Ysabeau99, I understand, it looks weird when I try but what I have found (it may not work for you) is if I wear my hair out in a fro and use Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, it makes my hair look thicker.

My first time ever coming across someone with the same type of ‘4c’ that I have.
Yes the 1st time I've seen my hair well our hair on TH-cam

This was me last week. I hate doing my hair everyday. So I twist it up just to take a break from being in it, and then I look in the mirror and want to cry because I hate how thin it looks when I strait up spend hours twisting.
Silk press (for me): a waste of a stylist time and my money....
SalmonInYour Rice My hair also turns into puff mama when it hits 60 degrees

As a white girl with fine, sparse density hair who thinks natural hair is super beautiful, it's nice to know that there are women with natural hair that is also sparse and fine. My fine, sparse blond hair looks totally different than your hair, and yet all of the pros and cons that you mentioned are true of me as well. I don't know if it's true to the same extent, but hair ads and standards for people with straight, flat hair are also about that thick, luscious hair.
