Not in the black community, but I have fine and thin hair. It's a real self esteem struggle! We are bombarded with images if hair models and product advertisements. Many styling tutorials use extensions, telling us our own hair isn't good enough; we need more. Body image isn't only about weight and shape and features, hair is a big boost or a big drag on our confidence.

It amazes me how rude and insensitive some hair stylists are, this one girl my daughter went to told her how bad her edges looked and my daughter gave her a bad review and then she tried to get defensive about it, if you are going to say something negative about a client's hair, have the decency to tell them how to FIX IT!! Or fix it yourself!! You're suppose to be the stylist!! I love this lady, she not only is GREAT at what she does, she seems very kind to her clients. You are appreciated Deeper Than Hair!! ❤️

I agree the insensitivity is problematic it’s like a doctor telling a patient “oh god! You look so ill!”. It’s unhelpful if patient looks ill be a doctor and help. Likewise a hairdresser shouldn’t point out something negative without also bringing help into equation. Duty of care should run across all fields.

@@purpledawn2727 that's the problem, we assume that thin is gonna be like that. Yes it's the case for many but when a stylist that good says it's thin, it's probably on the thin side haha

      @purpledawn2727 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@thatsEforEveryone but I think there's alot of misconception when it comes to the term "thin hair". You can have thin hair as in few hairs(balding) or you can have thin hair strands but still have alot of hair(fine hair), the latter being extremely common and it's normal for people to have this kind of hair. So my point is that people shouldn't feel bad about it.
As said, this lady in this video has alot of hair, but the strand themselves seems thin. People with similiar hair watching this may not even have thought about the fact that they supposedly have thin hair and showing this lady's hair as somerhing less desirable/less normal isn't really fortunate since this is infact normal and common.

(This explanation will sound baseless, being that it is better shown than verbally explained). The reason why it appears thicker with a darker rinse or a darker hair color is, it's like the "shadow effect". Meaning, it makes 1 strand of hair appear like 2 because of the "shadow effect". For an example high lights tends to highlight the strands of your hair. Versus low lights tends to shadow your already dark hair. I know my explanation sounds crazy but it's something that is better shown then verbally explained. I really wish I could show "Deeper than hair" and everyone else, then you would understand.

I'm having the same hair journey. I used to lose hairpins in my curls for a week at a time, snap clips, pop ponytail holders and break brushes in half. Then my body went haywire with tumors and hormones etc. I finally did get my hormones/PCOS problems under control. But, a few years ago, my hair started thinning out terribly around my face and kept disappearing. Within a year or so, I lost over a foot of length and developed nearly bald patches in the front.
A dermatologist performed a biopsy and discovered that a rare autoimmune disorder called lichen planopilaris is causing my hair loss and scalp pain, inflammation and itchiness. I'm currently jumping through hoops to try to find a treatment that works for me. I will definitely pray for your recovery, too.

Now these are the creative, beneficial, edifying discussions that need to addressed from a customers point of view and concerns. I would sometimes wonder if the hairdresser even listens to me or cared about me or what I was trying to say, never left with anything I asked, so haven't been back to one in 32 yrs. However now tuned into the beauty channel community, I came across this channel and won't leave. Its bringing and building back my faith slowly. Still afraid to go to one but feeling calmer and my anxiety down a notch. As a black woman of 54 yrs and grand daughters, I don't want them to go through my experiences. Some people just don't encounter your hair with a clean spirit, you leave traumatized, sometimes burnt to the scalp, sometimes bald after all you asked for was a trim. It's taken me over 30 odd years to talk about , I've never expressed my experiences to any one. My son loves locks, things started to change, I told him do your own you know how, do not just let everybody and anybody touch your Crown on your head. He listened and he's healing mentally and physically. Keep him in your prayers please. : ) Deep words for the wise, test the spiritual environment around you when you enter any building or congregation of people.
    Thanks for listening

Darker colours absorb more light and cast more of a visual ‘shadow’, so darker hair usually looks fuller. The downside is darkness will reduce visual definition, which is why a lot of curlies always feel like they need highlights!
Lighter hair reflects light and will literally ‘highlight’ your hair, so it’s better to add darkness if you feel like your hair looks too thin and/or weak
But ofc your overall appearance is what matters most, not just your hair alone. so while a darker colour might make your hair look fuller, it can also make ur face look less defined and might further highlight and darkness on your face, and creates more shadows on your face
In contrast, a lighter colour will add light to your face and might make you look brighter overall :)
This is true for all colours, which is why ppl say black is slimming- because black absorbs the light and adds more shadows, making it harder to see your shape

Wow finally someone with my hair type. I’ve NEVER seen anyone with this hair type (curly but puffy that tangles in on itself, but also thin and sheds easily). I hate my hair so much and it’s so frustrating, almost every single day I break down in tears because I can’t deal with it. It’s painful to brush, I can’t keep it curly because then it knots itself together but straightening is heat damage, and it’s always thin as hell. I WISH someone could make hair videos on this hair type because it is exasperating and it brings me to tears every day trying to deal with it. Please make more videos on how to deal with hair like this!! Thank you! 💕💕🙏🏻

Sounds like my hair type. Sheds tremendously after co-wash and shampoo and tangles ridiculously. Naturally dry & absorbs moisturizers/ conditioners like a sponge and looks brittle no matter how much I trim the ends. I cut all my hair off in frustration two years ago only for it to grow back out looking the exact same. Thin, but soft as baby hair..... it’s so confusing bc it grows very long

@@c.taylor558 I feel your pain girl you’re not alone. Something I found recently that’s been helping actually is to shampoo every day or every other day just on the roots, then condition only the ends. Rinse. Lightly wrap in a soft t shirt to dry a few min (not completely dry, keep it mostly damp). Then take it out and spray with detangler ALL OVER (I use the Suave kids one) and it’s a 10 miracle leave in ONLY on the ends and midshafts. Then, brush from the ends to the top with the Wet brush and part in the middle. Braid 2 sides or make 2 twists and let dry. It’s SO much easier to work with and I’ve lost less hair.
I’m still thinking of giving up and getting a wig some days though, but this definitely helps.

Thea Haslam Sandal Just because a hairtype is called “Scandinavian hairtype” OBVIOUSLY doesn’t mean thaT EVERYONE in Scandinavia has it or that everyone who has it is Scandinavian. I thought it went without saying but should of course have known better. Still, thin and wispy hair is called ”Scandinavians hair” here because it’s a common hair type. Not even everyone in my family has it or they wouldn’t have made fun of me for having “bad hair”.

My hair has gotten thinner as I age. I get a roller set every 2 wks and I work out 3 to 4 days a week with it wrapped under a cap. At night I put 3 big flexie rods in my hair and in the morning I wrap it before getting in the shower. This adds so much fullness.. The second week of my roller set is the best for my hair! My natural oils exudes through all my strands. My hair is shiny, has great curls, and so much fuller. I love it!!! I also keep my hair dark

@@MrsJolene- no. Her actual strands are thin/fine, but she has a normal amount of strands. Her hair is very fine. The texture of her hair seems very fine. If you can't see the scalp when it's dry, then it's not necessarily thin hair, just that her individual strands are not thick enough, not that she has fewer strands on her head.
