    Beautiful. Just made a bunch of these for fly tying stuff. I find that dipping the tubing part in water after 4:14 helps keep the elastic from burning when heating shrink tube. Also would cool off and harden the hot glue if doing these quick enough for that to be a problem.

      To add, years later, do NOT trust this type of carabiner!! I’ve had them fail multiple times on me to the point I don’t even put the extra key on one anymore.
      Buy a different carabiner! Doesn’t even have to be fancy, just for whatever reason these style ones open when you least want them to.

    At first I was like, "Man, why can't all videos be this well produced?" then I read your Bio. Great job and great tip.

    Great video and information as always. I've been using a small plastic bead from the craft store instead of the clear plastic tubing. Much easier as you don't have to cut and melt the plastic tubes. Just glue the round bead to the elastic ribbon and add shrink tubing.

    Mr Flagler - you have done it, again! From tippett rings with Barbie, fleecing peacock quills of their fluff and sharpening up the end of my whip finisher, this is great! I do have several spools of unwieldy fly tying material and this will tame them. Also, will make these for all tippett, Maxima and Amnesia. Perfect timing for Salmon River season.

    Thank You . Simple quick and efficient .Cheaper than any other system and ;which is very important , much lighter than expensive aluminum distributor . The only trick now is to find the 2 right tubing .

    Genius! I’ve been using rubber bands and they don’t work well. I asked Flyshop owner YESTERDAY, if he knew where to get the bands with holes that come with tippets, he said no. I’ll show him this tomorrow. I’ll be making about 30 for All my fishing spools. Finally can control the wicked web! Thanks you very much! 🎣

    As a Fly-Tier,making some of these for the Various Tinsels and wires would be Immensely Helpful, My spools always seem to want to Unwind,after I store them away.Many Thanks for a for a Great Idea.

    Made these before and loved them. Ended up giving some away or losing some so I just made 2 new sets. I end up using different colored elastic, pink for Fluoro and white for nylon. Used a sharpe on the elastic to indicate the tippet size.

    Really clever design! It makes me crazy when my bead stringing wires and fine gauge wrapping wires come un-spooled more than needed. Between your video and the comments below, I have some great info to run with to create my own spool tenders with what I have on hand. Thanks so much!

    Thanks so much for the video. I have accumulated different flourocarbon tippets from different manufacturers, and they all have different ways to retain the tippet. None of them seems to work very well, and I have tippets dangling all the time when I am on the river. I made up a bunch of these last night, and I think they work better than anything on the market. It doesn't even matter if the spool is wider than the elastic, because as long as the elastic is tight, it controls the tag end so well. Thanks again!

    I found the 3/16" OD tubing at Petsmart in the aquarium section. Loew's, Home Depot did not have the tubing in the 3/16" dimension. Shrink tubing at Lowe's in the electrical section and the strethc elastic in the sewing department of Hobby Lobby. Great idea, easy to make and one of those "why didn't I think of this?" Thank you

    • @hojodo
      @hojodo 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Great to know. I also wanted to add the shopping list: i) 3/16" OD and 1/8" ID plastic tubing (Petsmart); ii) 1/4" shrink to 1/8" diameter heat shrink tube (Home Depot electrical section - Raychem brand shown in video); 1/4" soft stretch elastic weave (Hobby Lobby). Thanks for letting us know where to go for these supplies.

    To bad over here it's almost impossible to get the tubing and the shrink tube even harder to find.
    This version is better then with the brass ring to pinch through the elastic.

    That's cool. Just what I need. Thanks! Can't understand why tippet manufacturers don't make better spool tenders. When you spool off the tippet the tender would need to rotate around the spool so I guess you wouldn't want it too tight?

    Does anyone know the name of the video where a man shows
    how to make a tapered leader from tippet in about a minute or two while
    standing with his rod on his arm on the river rocks. . He also showed a
    trick on attaching the fly so it can rotate mote freely. I cant find it

    Made a bunch of these; some with tubing, but switched to using square alphabet beads after I picked up a huge bag of them from the dollar store. The alphabet bead size is perfect for most spools width, is about the same width as the stretch elastic, and not too wide for the heat shrink to go over. I have a question though, is the tippet post at the beginning also a DIY creation? If so, what materials did you use? Thanks!

    I really like your tying videos they really have helped me. I just was wondering what is the advantage of these spool tenders over stock tenders

    • @tightlinevideo
      @tightlinevideo  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, the tippet is much smoother to pull off and put back on the spool if needed, it's a bit easier to get hold of the tippet because it sticks out at 90 degrees, and if the tippet is wound back in too far, these are much easier to rethread. But the biggest reason I make them is to use on spools that don't come with tenders ie. Maxima and Amnesia to name a few.

    • @byronanderson9198
      @byronanderson9198 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      that's what I was wondering if was thinking that it would come off easier. I have a have a hard time getting tippet off of Rio spools as is. looks like I am headed to the department store and the craft store this morning. thank you for your videos they really help a lot

    How well does it work with the thing spools

  • @johnleonard5362
    @johnleonard5362 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I had to go with 3/8" shrink tubing. Using 3/16 O.D. plastic tubing and 1/4" I.D. shrink tubing leaves only 1/16" difference. two layers of braided elastic was thicker than that and the 1/4" tubing was too difficult to slide over the plastic tubing and two layers of braided elastic. Other than that, they are easy to make and work well.

    • @barneyewing2664
      @barneyewing2664 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John, I was able to get the 1/4 over everything by stretching the braided elastic and working the shrink tubing up. I am going to get some 3/8 tubing to see if the process is any easier.

    • @tzzzz20

      Chris Leigh It's just a threaded aluminum rod with a lock nut at one end and a hole drilled through it at the other to accommodate a split ring. The Nite-Ize clip allows me to move it around quickly and easily.
