Clever Tippet Hack: Making your Spool Last Forever

- As fly fisherman, there are extra things we need to take to the stream with us. Tippet is one of them. We have to have backup spools in case we run out. The more spools we bring, the more bulk we have. All this bulk adds up (weight adds up, as well!).
This is a creative tippet management hack that I came up with. I love being a minimalist and cutting down on the spools I bring. Yet, I still need to have multiple spools with me. Using this tippet organization idea, you can go to the stream with one spool (per size) and also have a seemingly never-ending supply of tippet with you.
All you need is a drill and your favorite tippet brand. It really is the ultimate tippet storage solution.

Great idea ! As I use the spools with the smaller size hole I think I will use a bolt with two rubber faced washers rather than the paper towel hack. All in all a most helpful video, thanks.

Used this hack this morning. Headed to NC and didn't feel like lugging twenty spools. Worked like a charm! My hubby was impressed with my use of his power tool😂

Cory, this is brilliant! Game changer idea. Funny how a simple thing like putting a cloth on a drill bit to hold a spool makes all this possible, as well as realizing that new spools can actually hold twice as much. Sweet!

Hack extension. I retain any used sighter material and colour code between tippet spools. Always have the pink colour to indicate I’m down to the last length of tippet and to refresh. Kinda helps me. You can probably do this easily with those new fancy solid paint pens!

Dare say I was channeling you on a recent session on one of our beautiful Australian alpine streams. It wasn’t until I got my s-t together…tuck casting and got my line management spot on….that I started picking up quality fish. Indeed it was that ability to cast accurately with a more conventional stroke (not oval) that allowed me to present a quality drift into some tight pockets…and was rewarded with some absolute quality browns. One hiring that 28 inch mark!! All subtle aspects of this method you’ve pointed out over the last season or two. Genuinely it’s these cherries on the cake that make a difference, atleast on these clear cold pocket waters!

Cory why do you leave the original rubber on the receiving spool of tippet? I did and it gets buried with the add on tippet
@jamesnichols8893 James, you want to leave the original spool as it is with the rubber band on. That way you know you are down to the original (you have one full spool left) when you run out of the extra tippet you have put on top of it. Hope this clears it up for you.

I feel like a complete amateur now, after all this time switching to 4x or 6x when the 5x runs out... of course either way I still need to present the fly in a less amateur way but your hack is still something I intend to use :)

Another great video Cory, really appreciate your tips. As a newer fly fisherman, was wondering if you would consider doing a short video on your entire nymph rig setup from fly line to anchor fly and the materials needed? Thanks much!

The other obvious hack here = do your new leader setup / initial rigging with large spools of Seagur. It's cheaper and bigger (less portable, but great for the car / garage / boat). Then only use the smaller (and more expensive) tippet spools on the river.

So, my 15-year-old son and I are back in Farmington. He keeps snapping off rigs and fish. A couple dozen. He's pissed, and I see a broken rod in my near future. We take a break, and I empty his pack of all the tippets and test them all. Every single one broke in my hand, and I realized I had given this poor kid my mono tippet from 25 years ago. The look he gave me was priceless and well-deserved. Why the background? It seems to me that nylon or monofilament seems to degrade much faster than fluorocarbon. So my question would be, how long do you keep fluorocarbon vs nylon? All tippet is stored in a cool, dry place with no sunlight. I'd love to spool up 2 sets of our common tippet, but I fear I may be just causing the same problem down the road, not knowing how old the line is on that particular spool. Any and all ideas greatly appreciated. Also, If you're coming up to the Farmington and want some great content about what "NOT" to do, we're your team. Seriously, it would be great to buy you dinner with the crew at @upcountry. They are good people and a true resource for the river,

Terrence, tippet definitely has a shelf life to it. Fluoro lasts a couple of years if you take care of it. I have some (unopened) that I have had for 3 years and I know it is still good, but it's never left my house. If it has been out on the water with me and I know it's been on the spool for a season- I'll start fresh every year. It is just a good habit to get into. I don't use nylon tippet. Even for dries. I'll use Nylon leaders for dries and I'll keep them for maybe 2 years.

Great drill trick for spooling. I'm going to use that from now on! One thing I don't like about trouthunter is that you can't re-spool it, with that band they use. With most other brands, which use the elastic band with the grommeted hole in it, it's not a problem. Neither here nor there, I guess, but I don't know why trouthunter uses that type.
Glad it was helpful, JP. You are right, once you try to take the band off, it stretches out. Sometimes, I'll take a band off another spool and double it over if I need it for the Trout Hunter.
Great hack Cory.. I fill mine to the top of the spools!! I figured you as Dewalt guy though.. lol.. Does that trout hunter fit in the pre die cutouts of the Recessed C&F chest harness?? I have made the commitment to the C&F dumping all the crap that weighed me down!!! I’m going absolutely minimalist even with flys!!! I use 3-4 patterns and carry 25!!! I’m done!! lol
Thanks, Scott! You can put a lot more than 3 spools on for sure! And yes- The Trouthunter fits in the C&F (you have to use them). I am all in on the C&F. I'll be doing a video on it and the changes/additions to it that make it even better. I'm with you, the less you bring, the better (and more comfortable)! Btw, I have a Dewalt as well!
Good stuff Cory. I usually have blood knotted the new stuff onto the old stuff and when I hit the knot I know I'm getting low but this makes it even easier. Also, because most tippet weakens over time do you ever take the stuff that has been on the "bottom" of the spool for awhile and put it on "top" of another new spool? That is a way you can make sure that it doesn't get weak from sitting on the spool for too long.
Appreciate it, Eric. Good tippet will usually last a couple of years IF you keep it out of the sun and heat. That said, I usually get a new spool and switch it over every year to start fresh.

Hi Cory. Thank you for this information. Did you ever try to use braided-line instead of mono for leader? They are much thinner and very strong. Maybe better visibility too.
You are welcome. I don't use braid for many reasons. A couple are: It has zero stretch, is way too limp, and if it tangles you'll have to cut it and start over. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching.
I do something similar with invisx from seaguar. I use a spent tippet spool and wind a little line on, then do a blood knot leaving the tags long and finish with the amount of line desired.
Why do you leave the tag ends long?

Another is a stellar series of great time. Could you tell me why the original Trouthunter is attached to the next spool with a loop to loop knot? Wouldn't any knot work, if its function is to signal that you're down to your original spool?

Just need a little clarification. You leave the thin color coded band on the original spool of whateverX Trouthunter and wind the additional tippet on top of it? The thin material they use to make the bands is tough to remove and stretches out when you do, so I’m guessing you leave it on, but not sure. After adding the extra tippet onto the Trouthunter spool, do you use anything else, like a hair band to keep it from unspooling, or does the foam insert in the tippet tray in the Cand F box contain it well enough? Great tip. I’ve had this C and F box for a year or two without figuring out how to optimize it. Now I’ll use it.
Yes, leave the band on and go over it. You can take a hair band or rubber band if you want and put it on top of the new tippet. You might find out once you put it in the C&F that you don't need it. It depends on how tight you want it.
When you add spools to the original do you wrap the material on top of that spools rubber band?

Great tip as always, Cory! Have you found that the tippet that gets buried in the spool and not really used goes bad? I had a spool of 7x floro I tried to rig up with the other day (I use 6x 95% of the time for euro) and it was super brittle. Glad I caught it testing my knot! Not sure how old the spool was honestly.
I guess you need to spend more time fishing to keep the tippet fresh 😂

Sooo, when do you actually use the 50yds of your original Trout Hunter 7x at the bottom?
It is always there for backup. If you haven't reloaded your spool and you hit it, you will use however much for that day.
Cory....if you are in a pinch can you use plain flourocarbon lets say in 4lb as the leader or tippet
Alex, you can use whatever you have in a pinch. The only thing is regular 4lb fluoro is weaker than tippet of the same diameter. For instance, Seaguar 4lb test is 5x and Cortland 5x is 5.7lb test. I am a big believer in having all the right equipment when hitting the stream.
Did not know that. When I was fishing the Tellico I was using a tapered 5x. Although I didn't catch anything browns or rainbows that were big enough to break what I was using I am glad I was using the 5x. I agree with you on using the proper setup. I am that way when targeting trophy smallmouth. The problem with me is I don't know that much about trout fishing and the proper set ups. I did order and recieve the rod and reel recommendation you made and oh ya....I can feel tbe difference compared to the cheap white river set up I had. I can't imagine what those Thompson rods feel like. I would love to get one of those but I am rough on my equipment and it would kill me if I broke one of those rods. I’m confused on how you looped the court land to the trout hunter. I tried slow mo but still can’t figure it out 😂
Carlos, just form a large loop with your tippet by doubling your line. Now take the end and tie an overhand knot around it. This will make a slip knot. Put the large loop around the spool then tighten. Or make a large loop with a surgeon's knot- then pass your spool through the loop and pull it down to your new spool. Hope this helps.

Glen, I am a fan of Cortland Ultra Premium and Trout Hunter. I use both all the time.
I used Trout Hunter for the example because the spool hole is so big. With smaller holes sometimes you can find a drill bit that fits right in.

Honestly, I rarely get to it but if I haven't added to it, it will happen. And no, I don't go through a spool a day. I really meant to say that I add after every significant trip out when I know I've used a lot.
Like your chanel, 1 little tiny detail for this hack, don't drop it in the drink or your out of alot of cash$$ and now your screwed with no backup!! Just a thought.
Thanks, Jim. In all my years, (knock on wood) I've never dropped a spool in the water. I have it on a holder or recessed in my C&F chest pack tippet holder.
We used to do this in the very early 80’s - late 90’s while backpacking in the Sierras. If you do it right, one can easily get about a 100 yards of tippet on a single spool. Plenty for a weeks worth of backcountry fly fishing
