I guess it depends how you phrase it. _"Yeah, I know every boozer in a radius of 15 km from the city centre, and I once got me and me peepz to 20 diff joints in one evening, an' we got soooo wasted, man!"_ is most likely not what the interviewer is fishing for.
But I don't see how volunteering for, and organising, a team event (whether it be an office party or just friends meeting up for drinks one Saturday evening) can't reflect leadership skills.

There's a lot of ways you could demonstrate leadership aside from leading a project. For example, I answered this question before when I was still entry-level and my manager loved it. My answer was something like I took the initiative to thoroughly learn a new software my old company was transitioning to use, and eventually led training sessions for my team and became the go-to person for questions. Leadership was shown through taking initiative and leading my team to successfully adapt to a new software. I think we all do leadership type stuff everyday but just don't notice it. You got this :)

I never took leadership in work with others closest was a volouteer eventwhere we set up alot of chairs in groups 15 front to back and 15 wide
We we instructed to do the in a U type shape. All went well to when we were turning the corner and the groups of chair at the front wereto close together and the back quite wide apart. So i came up with the idea of stagfering tge chairs the same way as a stadium or theater has
Others came to ask about what I was doing and I explained and showed them. Oddly I never thought of it as taking leadership to some people told me theyiked hiw I took leadership. I did say thank you of course. To be honest I just thouggt of it as here is a prkblem how can we fix it even when people asked me about what I was doing it was just 1-3 people at a time I still just really thought little if it

I think some people are misunderstanding the question. It is “describe a time where you Demonstrated leadership?” Doesn’t necessarily mean that you must have a management position or lead a project or something like that.
It can be true yet simple. For example I worked retail for 3 years and we would get short staffed to just 3 workers during the last 2-3 hours of the day. I would often be the only visible employee at the customer service desk and there’d be times when I’d have 2-3 customers to check out, 2 phone calls to answer and having to help a customer find something in the store. You can just describe how you handled situations like these, they seem small/insignificant but can be overwhelming and be stressful.
You can say you remained cool and collected, answered a phone call while checking out a customer, explained to the customer that you’re short-staffed and radioed for help from the coworkers who were in the back.
Simple and small example sure but it was still a situation that shows problem-solving, communication with coworkers/customers and multi-tasking, ALL qualities which Demonstrate leadership. 😊
Best of luck to all Job-hunters💞

I’ve been in this game a long time, more than 30 years and I’ve worked lots of jobs so I’ve had a lot of interview experience.
They always SAY they want leadership qualities but in reality, when you use them it’s seen as “challenging authority” or “insubordination.” What they REALLY want is another mindless cog in a wheel who doesn’t think for themselves or question anything. No boss wants an underling who could lead better than he does so if you show any sign of leadership, you’ll be smacked down hard.
Interviewers who give candidates false hope in leading them to believe they can grow and advance into leadership are disgusting and evil. They all know the only people who will end up being appointed as “leaders” are just the butt kissers who suck up to the boss or are the personal friends he’s hired. Don’t p on my leg and tell me it’s raining! Why can’t interviewers just be honest for a change?

I'm one person that fill the role of a leader (when I need to be) and people always say I'm too nice and cute - so I'll believe them. The thing about this is knowing *how* to talk. When someone would give me a not-so-great idea I would say "It's not a bad idea, but it might not work because of this, what about we do that?". Or if you don't have a second idea, then take a time to think with that person - sometimes people just want to be useful.
The thing about being a leader is that sometimes people won't even acknowledge that there *is* a leader. I'm super ok with it, it's even funny when I get to decide/organize almost everything and people don't even notice. In the end, it's not about bossing, but about making sure everyone cooperates. You can get it with training even if you're not a natural, I also had a lot of difficulty in saying "no".
