Out of all of these that I have watched, this was defintely the hardest to get through. I felt absolutely terrible for him. The end was very rewarding though. Great work as always Derren.
They said they made a backround check to see if he mentally stable enough. I think things like that actually do work better on healthy people, because someone who suffers from mental illness (e.g. anxiety disorder) is probably more cautious... they might not react with guilt when touched, but are distracted by a feeling of fear. They might not be able to instantly connect to new people, they are less likely to relax and fall into very deep sleep etc. So I don't say this applies to everyone with anxiety disorder, but to some it might.
Derren Brown's demonstrations of the fallibility of human behaviour and thought help us to see how vulnerable we are to manipulation and fall prey to our dangerous evolutionary baggage. I am very thankful for the intelligence that goes into these presentations. Mr Brown is a National Treasure.
How can something be so heart-shatterting and so marvellous at the same time. That guy really needed to have some mental stamina to live through this. Best show I've seen.
@@gurucarcar This is not a choice to notice manipulators. This is a skills that should be developed from the childhood. Derren shows how manipulators can influence innocent people to do what they want. And people should learn how to protect themselves. Derren is wonderful!

I end up thinking this about a lot of his experiments. In hindsight, they're obviously fake, but in the moment with all the stress and stuff, it's better to just accept it as reality instead of going against it.
Oh that poor man. When that tear fell from his cheek I felt so sorry for him. In fact, I felt guilty that I was watching this torture for entertainment. Derren, you're wicked.
This man has a laugh at the end and there are many that have done this for real. The very system that is there to protect you can be turned against you even if you have never committed any crimes. Crazy to think people confesse to murders they have not committed all the time.
What?! No way! The system is perfect, "best in the world!" Politicians--which also includes judges--are selfless servants of the public and have only your best interest at heart, and law enforcement officials are all saints just trying to serve and protect the innocent. I'd laugh at my own sarcasm if the reality of it wasn't actually so disturbing.
Geez Derren has a dark side...I really don't think this is a moral thing to do to anybody, it's pretty evil to put somebody through this kind of psychological distress and could do them permanent long term trauma damage no matter how healthy they start off as. Just look at the Stanford Prison Experiment, where they also screened the participants and started with healthy college students, and ended up with traumatized prisoners and guards and had to cancel the experiment early.
@@tomkenning5482 Zimbardo also did aftercare for the subjects and told them that what happened was all an experiment. They knew they were a part of an experiment from the very beginning. The difference between Derren and Zimbardo is that Zimbardo allowed subjects to actually physically torture one another. He set up such an inhumane experiment that it was likened to a Holocaust death camp. Zimbardo is lucky he is not in prison for what he did. Compared to him, Derren barely did anything. Jodie was in intense emotional distress for a couple of hours (from when he learned of the murder to his confession). Then he was immediately told that it was all a lie. He has a very low chance of suffering long-term damage from this scenario since it was set up to be so short-term. At the most, he will get worried when he hears bells. Other than that, he'll be fine.
It all keeps me thinking of when I was in a home equipment shop two days ago, and a plate just rolled off a shelf by itself and broke on the floor super close to where I was standing looking at some kitchen gloves. I was standing there in shock, another woman from further away told the shop assistant it just rolled off by itself, and the assistant looked directly at me and said "it did?". Before that I was expecting her to apologise, but her implying it was my fault made me feel guilty all to the end of my visit, even during my later purchase of something else I was expecting her to bring it up again and preparing myself thinking of ways to convincingly tell her it was not me, at the same time kind of getting ready to have to ask for camera recordings or even thinking how much it would be to pay for - even though I was completely innocent!! I need to grow thicker skin.
His reactions at the end was so legit it just throw away all my scepticism. Amazing experiment makes u think how people might build their beliefes.. and shows u not only indeviduals minds can be minipulated but how whole nations could be.!
This is so cruel... yet so, soooo entertaining. However, I find it VERY hard to believe he wouldn't wake up as they picked him up and carried him. Really good acting by everyone though, well done stunt. If someone can be manipulated to this extent, it further illustrates how effective the manipulations that are used on all of us by the media, politics and advertising must be. The subconscious is a powerful thing and big money is spent to ensure we want/think/do what others want us to. Scary.
Leaping Lynx yeah I was thinking that too. Everything was done unconsciously it's so creepy. I believe it can be done by the media. He was put through hypnosis and under the influence of alcohol. Our brain is a very powerful organ
It's a bit off because I didn't buy the whole cinematic funeral procession thing while they were carrying him out to wake up in the grounds in the morning either lol but then I thought that maybe they could've done that part afterwards just to get a good shot. But, either way, how could they take off the blankets, all lift him awkwardly, carrying him down a bunch of stairs, etc etc etc....I suppose if he was super toasted drunk the night before it could be possible, we've done pranks on friends that have passed out at parties in the past and such...but that seemed way too much and far beyond the markers on the face and that kind of stuff we'd do lol but I'd imagine there are limits and liability factors so he couldn't have been able to get too drunk. The episode was great and it illustrated its point extremely well, everyone did excellently. I just can't get passed that one detail. Glad it isn't just me that thinks it haha :D
i think maybe they did it so that if he did start to wake up, its surreal enough that he might think he was dreaming. and derren is holding his head so it would be very easy for him to monitor jody and put him back under if he needed to
Hypnosis has been used as an anesthetic for major surgery, and the patient didn't feel a thing; so I am not surprised that they could pick him up and carry him outside without waking him. He was in deep trance. Derren, being a master hypnotist, can plant any suggestion of any emotion he wants.
I watched it when it was broadcasted on my TV some years ago, I loved it and finally thought about it again and here I am watching it again, I'm amazed I still remembered a lot of things in this haha.. This was so well made..
Sherlock Holmes, Doctor Who and now Derren Brown are some of my favorite British things and after that intro I'm vibing 2/3. If this episode ends up having a blue police box in it you can just assume I died of delight.
A police team in the US got 5 people to separately confess to crimes they did not commit for one case. One would think they would change their approach if they care about justice vs arrest rates.
They don't care about justice - at least a lot of them. They just want to pin someone and move onto the next case. Part of the problem is overworked, understaffed and underpaid cops.
They don't care about justice. Being a police officers doesn't even require higher education or demonstrated intelligence. It's one of those jobs where using your brain and considering the morals of your own actions isn't a requirement. That's why there are so many cases of police brutality. They're just a bunch of morons who were given guns.
When something big happens i tend to remember the situation to be blurry and just a little argument over the situation would make me doubt my memory and made me feel guilty even if i didn't do anything seeing this makes me wanna CRY
Reminds me of the movie 'The Game.' I wounder how many innocent people have had their lives taken because they were primed for guilt. It was a beautiful moment when Darren put his arm through the police station wall.
Yes, and very, very dangerous. Not everybody has the strength of mind to really get over something like that, even though they've been told it was all a 'Joke'. Not a joke when your mind has been tampered with.
Derren has proven his point, but that poor guy's traumatized. He said "it was a great experience". Nothing great about that experience. Nobody has to go through all that just to learn that we can be easily manipulated.
I listened to a podcast a while ago about a lady who admitted to a murder she didnt do, and was put into prison for YEARS. I was wondering how in the world it would be possible to admit to a false murder of all things... but now im absolutely terrified this is insane
No way the police station part was real. I think he ran off to find the police station they mentioned at the start as an exaggerated way of saying "Don't go into the town, it's empty", but they didn't have anything set up so they just staged the last bit to give the episode a good ending. Were they so sure that he was going to run off to the police station that they had a convincing police station set set up the entire time, just for the unlikely eventuality that he goes there to confess? If they made that police station set, would they not have the whole thing camera'd? You only see him in the easy-to-fake interrogation room thing. They also have a fucking party planned for him through the wall, when not 5 mins ago, Jodi'd ran off and Derren was like "Where is he going, can we get cameras on him" etc. Don't get me wrong, though. At the point where he went into the town, the point of the show was made. He would only be going there if he was going to confess, but they had to step in to make it a more "TV" ending that people would enjoy.
After watching the whole thing I actually just think they were all actors (including Jodie). I just don't believe that the ending was real and agree with the point you made. But I also found it strange that he was sleeping in a hospital type gown (rather than just in boxers or naked like most modern men) and he somehow didn't wake up to them carrying him. Surely as well they wouldn't be able to all stand around him in a creepy circle like that, that probably took a lot of time in itself. I believe the whole thing was acted but represents how it COULD happen in real life.
I’m not sure I want to be involved with one of Derren Brown’s experiments! He’s so good at it, he can make you think something is true when is completely false! He’s just amazing!
that was actually painful to watch- an utterly decent man....pushed to the brink of self-doubt...within 72 hours....either a completly fascinating, inspired social experiment or a possibly mind-fucking event for this poor soul....either way...we humans must be watched and treated carefully.....and this doc. watched in gripping fascination to the end....well done....
Wrong video :D But the Assassin was the first Derren Brown vid I watched after rediscovering him recently, and it freaked me out a bit! Sent me surfing and swallowing up all the DB vids I could find for weeks. Now I'm desperately waiting for more...
The plate swapping thing made me uncomfortable just how a bunch of strangers were eating off each other’s plates and he was unknowingly eating off a plate other strangers had been eating off as well all I know is they could never try something like that post Covid lol
I hate that I get emotionally invested in things, it messes with my logical judgement and reasoning. I think that's the real great trick, practised by Derren on each and every one of us viewers as we watch. I do love that kind of feeling of uncertainty, though. It's delightfully intriguing.
This would have deff worked on me and I dont care to admit that. I have memory loss that causes me to second guess myself. If it were me I probably would have confessed when I was being questioned and probably not even doudted if I'd done it or not. I feel bad for this guy especially if he ends up second guessing everything afterwards. I hope the conditioning did last long term.

@@rochelledennis6923 *The Guilt Trip*
The poor guy probably thinks he has a brain tumor or something when everything kept changing.
Nah, parallel universe explains it all
Derren Brown's demonstrations of the fallibility of human behaviour and thought help us to see how vulnerable we are to manipulation and fall prey to our dangerous evolutionary baggage. I am very thankful for the intelligence that goes into these presentations. Mr Brown is a National Treasure.
How can something be so heart-shatterting and so marvellous at the same time. That guy really needed to have some mental stamina to live through this.
Best show I've seen.
I honestly feel so bad for him... he’s such a nice guy...
Lmao, this is how you create the ultimate trust issues... Lol... Poor guy was probably on the verge of diarrhea...Lmao
This is really cruel to do to someone.
It is done to dozens of people around you and you even did not notice.
@@svetlanapanova1122 only if you chose to
@@gurucarcar This is not a choice to notice manipulators. This is a skills that should be developed from the childhood. Derren shows how manipulators can influence innocent people to do what they want. And people should learn how to protect themselves. Derren is wonderful!

once again : Thank You Derren, and to all of your crew!
Loving the cluedo names aha! Spotted it straight away so this wouldn’t work on me, in fact I’m kind of surprised Jodie didn’t notice it I’d end up turning around and going wait a minute this is a stitch up lol x
Cluedo names?
Carey Hunt Come on now how are you meant to find an inter web provider if he doesn’t have a search engine it makes no sense
I end up thinking this about a lot of his experiments. In hindsight, they're obviously fake, but in the moment with all the stress and stuff, it's better to just accept it as reality instead of going against it.
He was hypnotised.....so he had no control over his own mind.
Not only that, but they looked the part as well.
Oh that poor man. When that tear fell from his cheek I felt so sorry for him. In fact, I felt guilty that I was watching this torture for entertainment.
Derren, you're wicked.
He's teaching people to not be manipulated by guilt at the wrong time.
That was brutal.. i was crying for jody i felt so bad for him 😢
Geez Derren has a dark side...I really don't think this is a moral thing to do to anybody, it's pretty evil to put somebody through this kind of psychological distress and could do them permanent long term trauma damage no matter how healthy they start off as. Just look at the Stanford Prison Experiment, where they also screened the participants and started with healthy college students, and ended up with traumatized prisoners and guards and had to cancel the experiment early.
Ruki Sar Difference is Derren has people do aftercare and shows them nothing bad happened
Ruki Sar I mean he probably was thinking that he was so drunk he didnt remember
Amazing experiment makes u think how people might build their beliefes.. and shows u not only indeviduals minds can be minipulated but how whole nations could be.!
the ringing started making ME feel guilty
American police do this trick all the time
I hope he got paid for this lmao
Love how they have the only Scottish person say ''THERE'S BEEN A MURDER''
Poor sweetheart
You should watch some of Derrebs live shows, like enigma and Svengali - you’ll see how big an effect hyponosis can have
I watched it when it was broadcasted on my TV some years ago, I loved it and finally thought about it again and here I am watching it again, I'm amazed I still remembered a lot of things in this haha..
"I don't take pearl necklaces; I GIVE them."
Probably didn't survive the edit.
I can't believe he just took the clue characters, as well the premise, and convinced this guy.

darren is officially the best prankster
Reminds me of the movie 'The Game.'
I wounder how many innocent people have had their lives taken because they were primed for guilt.
It was a beautiful moment when Darren put his arm through the police station wall.
That's kind of creepy that he can do that
Yes, and very, very dangerous. Not everybody has the strength of mind to really get over something like that, even though they've been told it was all a 'Joke'. Not a joke when your mind has been tampered with.
Cops do it too, it’s sad and scary.
some people would just start killing random people to cover up potential witnesses etc. once you cross that line its very easy to keep going.
"When I've drunk champagne before I do have the tendency to forget."
Lmao classiest way of saying "I drank too much."
"Words can't describe it". One word describes it. Cruel.
and funny n entertaining n...
Derren has proven his point, but that poor guy's traumatized. He said "it was a great experience". Nothing great about that experience. Nobody has to go through all that just to learn that we can be easily manipulated.
I love that the actors are named after the characters from Clue! Hilarious!
oh my lord, that’s very intriguing how derren knows exactly how human minds work. wow. it’s... astounding, really.
I'd be in therapy for the rest of my life after this. What an amazing video!!
To be honest, I think I'd be pissed if this had been done to me but Jody took it all in his stride!
That's how nice he is. :D
and that's why jodie was picked. He's such a nice person
This was pretty evil
Anyone else notice how everyone of importance in the house is named after cluedo characters? Miss Scarlett, Colonel Mustard (Colman) etc
40:12 "ok this has gone far enough."
YA THINK?!
You don't realize they're ALL actors? Use some common sense!
A huge game of murder mystery
Bless the lad!! Every law enforcement officer should be made to watch this show !!
As if they'd care! They are well aware of what they are doing already.
I, most certainly agree!! How do they sleep at night?
Think about this. Anyone can be tricked this way. Who knows, maybe its happening to you right now.
Thank you for making my anxiety worse :D
I do this to myself everyday!
I’m not sure I want to be involved with one of Derren Brown’s experiments! He’s so good at it, he can make you think something is true when is completely false! He’s just amazing!
This is truely aweful.
I want to but I bet I wouldnt get in haha
The smile on his face when he make them feel bad
that was actually painful to watch- an utterly decent man....pushed to the brink of self-doubt...within 72 hours....either a completly fascinating, inspired social experiment or a possibly mind-fucking event for this poor soul....either way...we humans must be watched and treated carefully.....and this doc. watched in gripping fascination to the end....well done....
Perfect example of why people are jumping on the Flat Earth train. Manipulation on a rampage... a flat rampage
Carey Hunt It would not surprise me in the least.
What the hell I clicked on this for the assassin not the guilt trip
Trick or Treat...smell Derren's feet...give him something good to eat.
in Christopher Walken's voice...
and now it's titled something else entirely that isn't either
it is indeed a mind game
it is indeed a mind game
Absolutely diabolical experiment... equal parts fascinating and horrifying to see the powerful effects of gaslighting.
The house and all the characters remind me of the board game Clue
That's the point. Also it's 'cludeo' in the UK where it was filmed
Do you mean cluedo
The part with Nancy Sinatra and Derren spurting blood up the walls is an absolute masterstroke in setting the mood.
Mad respect for Jodie
For having such an immersive experience in his life
For one single week
This is a step too far. It's not good enough to go all Jeremy Beadle about it after you've done that to someone.
_April Fool_ ...? From 1980? is that what you're referencing? (I'm not British, sorry)
I feel so bad for this guy. I gotta say, Darren finds really good actors.
Wrong video :D
But the Assassin was the first Derren Brown vid I watched after rediscovering him recently, and it freaked me out a bit! Sent me surfing and swallowing up all the DB vids I could find for weeks.
Now I'm desperately waiting for more...
Em Penfold Haha I went down the same road, so interesting and thought-provocing! Im rewatching all of them these days
From the time this video was released, this is the fourth time I'm watching this and I cry EVERY time!!!
Bless Jody's heart.
He is such a good soul
