Thanks Dane. I am from Brazil and have started to take my driving lessons in Dublin. Your videos are so helpful. Specially the way you explain (your English is very clear). Thank you so much. God bless you.
I just got to remember those appropriate speeds to go at. When I'm driving especially for watching out for Pedestrians to. And going thru the Towns, Cities, Streets and Residential Areas.
Hello Dane, I've watched all your videos but found this one particularly helpful. Passed my test today on my first attempt and want to thank you for your content, it's incredibly helpful 🚗
Hi Dane, I've been watching lots of videos you upload and there very informative and explain the content in detail. I'm currently waiting for my driving test. Would you be able make a video in detail of you doing a "mock" driving test and you are the learner attempting the test with the "driving instructor" to go into a detail walkthrough of the test from theory to the end. So learner drivers know what to expect on the day. The 'ism" Irish school of motoring made a video a number of years ago on TH-cam, a walkthrough of the driving test. But I was wondering could you do your own version of the topic. Thanks for the informative videos. Happy driving!!
Praise the Lord for that You explain so calm and very well ! I just passed my theory test and soon I hope I will start my drving lessons as well but I decided that I watch yours video for that I have ideea and I believe that will help me lot of when I will start my lessons. I did a note book as well and i write :) I learned how I move car , how I control the wheel etc. Hopful my future instructor will be in the same line with you. God bless you.
Hi Dane, just bought my first car and came to your videos for a refresher as it's been a while since I passed - thank you so much for such a helpful and clear video, and for teach driving in a very simple and safe way. Thanks a lot once again, subscribed so I can continue watching and continue improving!
I've had my license for almost 20 years and am currently taking reduced EDT lessons for my first license here in Ireland. This kind of video is exactly what I needed to see, just some real driving so I know what to emulate on the day of the exam / adjust my own driving habits going forward. Mind you, I drove a lot in Brazil and yeah, don't drive like you at all, so plenty to learn here. The ADI I got is...not that good, maybe too stuck on his ways when teaching new drivers? Anyway, have been watching many of your videos mate, very helpful, thank you!
I'm a learner and can't get any lessons at the moment due to lockdown restrictions. I'm only just getting out now and again weekends with my sister (my driving sponsor!). Found this video really informative and helpful for my next session on the road - definitely going to watch more from you - think you're great and thank you so much !
Great Video, watching this after my instructor said I shouldn't learn manual as I drive too slow and stay in 2 - 3d gear max as have quite low awareness of what speed i should be in for a gear. I have just completed EDT and had no practice outside of this but their suggestion makes me think I am impossible to teach :( I learn in Wexford so stress of tight and bendy roads are always there, shame I didn't found a clearer guidance on which gear to choose when (I know that if revs go up i need to go up the gears, but I have no idea when to go down) before my confidence was knocked off completely
I must admit, I select nutral at traffic lights-and use handbrake- rather than hold down the clutch and wait in first gear, unless or until lights are about to change then I'll select first. My car has quite a heavy clutch so I like to work this way. Im assuming thats not a test "fail" 👀
That's fine, you can do it that way if you want but I prefer to be ready in first gear to be able to move away quicker, it's not a fail doing it your way. I don't work on the basis of what some random tester thinks is a fail or not, I operate on the basis of good safe and practical driving for life, not just a once off test.
I am a driving test applicant in Leitrim. I liked the video it was useful. I have a doubt, is it possible to know when to change gear up and down using the rev counter. Thanks
2:35 - I assume you are in Ireland? Are test still carried out by DVSA, as wondering if in Ireland the examiners expect you to signal to go round a parked car, as in most of time the UK it is not needed and you can get marked do for doing it.
I'm in Ireland and the DVSA do not carry out tests here. It's not especially important to indicate around parked cars, I just gave a quick signal to let any other road users that I'm moving out a bit more. The important thing is to be aware of oncoming vehicles and giving enough room to the stationary vehicles.
Hi Dane, your videos are a great help in preparing me for my test on Monday! I'm driving a Fiat 500 and on my dashboard it tells me when to change gears. Its roughly change gears every 10 km/h. So anything above 10 km/h should be in second gear and everything above 20km/h should be in 3rd and so on. Should I follow this and change gears when it tells me too or should I follow your advice? I sometimes find that dropping to second gear for larger roundabouts I can hear the engine too much. Thanks so much for the great videos!
It does depend on the car, all cars are different. Try not to be looking at the dash too much because you need to be focused on the road ahead. You shouldn't need the cars technology to tell you when to go up and down gears.
This lockdown drive me crazy, i bought a car just before this storm start and now I'm stuck as my instructor don't do lessons anymore, the good part is that i drive it myself with my friend at work and I improve every day, the main problem i have at the moment is downgear, i keep getting different answers and it drives me crazy, each time i go from 4th to 2th the car shake, can't describe the feeling, what i usually do is i slow down till around 20km/h and i switch from 4th to 2th, some friends say i take my feet from the clutch to fast some say i should give it a little gas before i release the clutch, i got like 10 answers so far
First of all try lifting your clutch very slow when dropping gears. If you slow down first and then drop to 2nd gear it should be better - especially if you lift the clutch very slowly.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Wow, thank you very much for replay, pleasant surprise, my problem with this is im keep getting paranoia that if i do this on exam day i will fail for coasting
Coasting is when you press the clutch in for too long, if you're aware of this then it should not be allowed to happen. I always try to advise people to go down the gears one by one because I think it is more gradual and you are less likely to cause the car to jump. It is also very important to be braking at the same time as you are changing down the gears - especially when you are going down the hill- this video will explain more. th-cam.com/video/s7QjfXslfm0/w-d-xo.html But as long as you slow down first and the come off the clutch slower after the gear changes you should be fine.
Hi I drove up a hill and I was at the top of the hill going down, Speedometer was 40mph, but I was in 2nd gear. The engine was making a *loud revving noise* I wanted to go up to 3rd - 4th gear, (to match gear with speed) but I was taught "to leave it in 2nd. The engine will slow down naturally " Please can someone explain why I do not need to go to Gear 3-4? Thank you for your video
At 6:25 and 7:30 when u went down a gear, did u slow down using the brake, or did u just take your foot off the accelerator? And when u were going uphill at 6:25 and went from 3rd to 2nd, u had to slow down momentarily to avoid a jerk, won't the car behind u get annoyed? I remember going up a steep hill and having to slow down a bit to go from 3rd to 2nd (I was in 3rd gear at the beginning, then decided 3rd was too weak), and hoping the car behind me wasn't too close. Also, parts of these Irish towns (or are u in Scotland?) are picturesque!
At 6.25 I did slow down slightly and drop a gear as I was approaching a sharp bend as it was the appropriate and safe thing to do. I couldn't care less what the car behind me was thinking (I can't even remember if there was a car behind me) as I've more important issues to be dealing with as opposed to second guessing what the person behind me may or may not be thinking. People need to drive based on the conditions in front of them and react accordingly, if it's a bend all cars will have to slow down to some degree anyway. And yes all these videos are made in Ireland, mostly in Wexford in the Southeast but also a few in Dublin and Cork, this particular video was when I was in East Cork last week in the towns of Cóbh and Middleton.
I wouldn't completely rule out that as a potential idea for a future video but it's not really that complicated. Just study the rules of the road, do lots of practice with the theory test CD, book the theory test online and pass it with at least 35 out of 40 questions correct. If you fail repeat until successful.
Hi Dayne. My car gives eco tips on dashboard, when I hit 60km it keeps telling me to go into 5th gear. Will the examiner fault me if I ignore it and stay in 4th. Also do we have to overtake buses that stop at bus stops
The eco tips are handy but they can't be trusted in a test, do what feels right for the car not what the dashboard says. Overtake if safe but don't rush it because they might be moving out.
What is the maximum speed I can drive on 4 gear ? I have Toyota Spinter manufactured in 1995 . Normally I drive 60 km on 4 gear . Can I drive beyond that ?
while on hand driving lessons i enjoyed taking photos of cutie rabbits, squirrels, red horses, stone houses, lakes autumn trees, a couple of selfie with my calm funny instructor. full stop the car when iheard several cars following us horns loud at the same time. he said, no worries frankie its only a wedding hahah. mullingar 4ever in my brain now. goodluck ireland stay pretty.
Hi Dane My driving test is on wednesday and Im doing it in a Volkswagan Passat Estate which has 5 gears. My instructor says I should be in 4th gear when im going 50 km/h but when I do the revs sit around 1000 rpm and the car struggles (it shakes) unless i speed up to around 56 km/h but then I am breaking the speed limit so I prefer to stay in 3rd gear and stay around 48 km/h which leaves the revs around 1700 rpm is this ok to do as my intructor says I should move up to 4th gear and that the tester wont be always checking my speed? Thanks your videos are so helpful!
Thanks Dane. I recently passed my test. Your videos were a big help in preparing for the test. Now I am getting used to driving on my own and preparing to drive on the motorway for the first time. I have a question about what gear to be in when overtaking on a motor way. Do you drop down a gear or stay in 5th? Thank you. Alice
There is no specific gear for overtaking, it will depend on the situation and what speed and gear you're driving at prior to the overtaking manoeuvre. Each situation needs to be treated individually, there's no generic one size fits all answer to the question. Best wishes, glad you found the videos useful and informative 🎊
Hi Dane, your videos are amazing, I have my test March 13th and I am terrified, I am a very nervous person and as soon as tester gets into car I cannot stop shaking, any advice please
th-cam.com/video/dBiORGdhIts/w-d-xo.html The above video is on how to handle driving test nerves. Think about the happiest day of your life and then think about the best drive you ever did and then do the test and pass it. Go n-éirí leat.
I struggle a bit when changing down gears especially from 3 to 2, i stay longer on the clutch because i always fear the car will jump or jerk. I am working hard to improve this but i wonder will i get a fault mark if the jump/jerk happened during my test
@Dane Tyghe thank you so much, I had my test today and I passed. Second try and I really put my heart to it, your videos were so helpful particularly the reverse left; I did it competently, observation etc. I can't thank you enough. A proper thank you will be heading your way through revolut
Hi Dane! Your videos are really helpful! Thanks I am just wondering what would be a good gear to pass general bumps? My last test I fail among other mistakes the review was that I passed kind of harsh on the square bumps, I would like to improve it at this time. Any suggestion I would appreciate.
Hi Dane, thanks for sharing the video. I have a question in this video 23:11:When you are approading the roundabout and you changed the gear to 1 as you needed to yeild to the traffic on your right hand side, you took the 1st exit and you changed the gear to 2 after you exit the roundabout. Usually we need to get in the roundabout with 2nd gear, but sometimes we have to stop at the roundabout and yield on comming the traffic on the right, in this case when could be the best time to change the gear to 2nd gear ? Some says that it's not the best idea to change the gear when turning the steering wheel, but we have to turn the wheel when we are in the roundabout. If we stay on 1st gear, will we lose marks? (1st gear stopping only if the traffic is busy but mostly the roundabouts near test center are busy) looking forward to hearing from you. Cheers.
That depends on the individual roundabout but a good confident driver will have no problem changing gear as they are turning the wheel, it'll be fine if you are driving slowly enough to maintain control.
Hi dayne, when overtaking parked cars in residential areas do you have to indicate ? Would you also have to indicate to move out for a wheelie bin or pothole
th-cam.com/video/2yPJbwbqfB8/w-d-xo.html This 👆 video will help answer your question, generally use the handbrake if you are on a hill, at lights or if stopped over 5 seconds.
This is on speed and progress th-cam.com/video/LC5oMrwAovg/w-d-xo.html As for ramps I don't have anything specific really yet although I cover them in my commentary drive videos. Generally slow down and get to 2nd gear although you could chance the smaller ones in 3rd.
Hi Dane, You're so unbelievably helpful, thank you so much for these videos. I'm Just wondering, when you stop at a stop sign or traffic lights do you have to use your handbrake or is it perfectly okay to use your brake pedal? And also is it okay to go into neutral gear and then pull up handbrake when using it?
Thanks very much, you should use the handbrake if you are stopped on a hill or over 5 seconds, it's usually better to wait in first gear so you are ready to move off. You could just use your brake pedal for a short stop but not long stops. Check out this video on using the handbrake. th-cam.com/video/4iW4O4xWXzE/w-d-xo.html
Because I wasn't going slow enough to do 1st gear, if I had of went to 1st gear at that time the car would have jerked and jumped. I had right of way and it was clear so kept going, a few seconds later I did drop into 1st gear when I slowed more.
Hi Dane,,, I've my test coming up and generally feel good about it,, but I still chug the car often when changing up and down gears,, it very annoying lol,, any general tips?
th-cam.com/video/Ywtp_o6WFr4/w-d-xo.html The above video will help you, it's important to brake as you are going down the gears and don't lift the clutch too quickly.
I will try and do one on that in future and thank you for the suggestion. I would advise taking it slowly and in 2nd gear but roll into 1st if the ramps are particularly high.
Hi dane what gear is suitable for residential area? My tester gave me 2 grade 2s on the gears and I dont where it was was coming from. I remember i was only using 2nd gear on a residential area
Always drive based on the conditions and never treat the speed limit like a target, the worse the weather the bigger distance you should leave in relation to the vehicles in front.
I have an older car Dane, 08 Ford fiesta, fourth gear at 50 in my car makes it really struggle for power, so I leave it in third. Is this ok? Or should you be in fourth regardless of how old your car is?
No it depends on the car, so you need to use your own judgement on this. It might be fine in 4th on the flat and downhill but on the uphill stay in 3rd a little bit longer.
Wait.....thats midleton! do you do lessons around that area? I'm sitting my theory test next Tuesday so I'm (hopefully) going to be looking to do my 12 lessons soon.
Hi Dane, I failed my test and one big comment was me driving too slow.. there’s one road that has ramps about every 50m should I be trying to get up to 40/50km in between every ramp?? It’s 50km speed limit.. thanks a million!!
Hi Dane, my car is 1.4 diesel and is very high Geared. If i go into 4th gear at around 45km/h, the engine struggles. 3rd gear feels a lot more comfortable at that speed. Is this OK for the test / are all cars different when it comes to what gear you should be in?
When you come down in gears do you fully release the clutch after changing the gear? When I come down in gear I brake , press in the clutch but if I fully release it it feels like the car is being pulled back
It's not a case of just going to 5th gear because its a dual carriageway, you need to ask yourself are you driving over 70km? If so then 5th gear is best. If you don't adjust the gears to the speed then it will probably count against you.
Hi Dane, I have my test soon and just wanted to ask you a quick question regarding the automatic handbrake. My instructor has advised me that the automatic handbrake is acceptable for the test, but will the tester ask me to turn off the automatic hold for the hill start segment of the test? Thank for all your help!
The automatic handbrake is absolutely fine, I've never heard of a tester asking anyone to turn off the auto hold. I never recommend the auto hold anyway because I think it's easier to creep out at a difficult blind junction without the auto hold. But if you're comfortable with it then keep doing it.
I think that you are asking me to do roundabout videos of which I have already done a lot of. Please check the link below th-cam.com/play/PLheoz7pGa31hzdtZvDMx0rVhX8wZnDkMM.html

Hello, when I come out from test centre there is maximum speed 15 km/h so what gear should I use?
Perfect. Good job, good driving instructor. I have a question, under what circumstances should a driver change from gear 4-1?
If they stop without going down the gears
Do you add gas before lifting up your clutch when changing from second to first at the close junction where there is yield sign, please?
Probably. Depending on the hill or how fast you need to go. Each situation is different.

You need to judge it based on the car you drive, all cars are different
It is very helpful..thank you
My pleasure
Hi Dane. Thank you for the video. Btw what city is this? It's really beautiful.
This was East Cork in the towns of Cóbh and Middleton
Excellent stuff.
You're not wrong
Thanks for your videos

Tnx Dane.... Usefull videos

Hi Dane, your videos are amazing, I have my test March 13th and I am terrified, I am a very nervous person and as soon as tester gets into car I cannot stop shaking, any advice please

The above video is on how to handle driving test nerves.
Think about the happiest day of your life and then think about the best drive you ever did and then do the test and pass it. Go n-éirí leat.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive This is the best reply ever
I'm not sure if it had any effect but thank you 😅
@@DaneTygheletsdrive It had so much effects sir. Am so lucky to be hearing this before my driving test.
Best of luck with your test 🤞
Great video

13:04 great roundabout manoeuvre by the Auris ahahha
Brilliant videos!
Thanks
I struggle a bit when changing down gears especially from 3 to 2, i stay longer on the clutch because i always fear the car will jump or jerk. I am working hard to improve this but i wonder will i get a fault mark if the jump/jerk happened during my test
You need to come off the clutch slowly and not use it for too long, this video will help you to understand

@Dane Tyghe thank you so much, I had my test today and I passed. Second try and I really put my heart to it, your videos were so helpful particularly the reverse left; I did it competently, observation etc. I can't thank you enough. A proper thank you will be heading your way through revolut
You're very kind thank you so much and congratulations to you on passing your test, a great achievement 👏😁
Hi Dane! Your videos are really helpful! Thanks
I am just wondering what would be a good gear to pass general bumps? My last test I fail among other mistakes the review was that I passed kind of harsh on the square bumps, I would like to improve it at this time. Any suggestion I would appreciate.
Usually slow down gradually to about 25km and 2nd gear
You should indicate if crossing the middle of the road, depending on the situation and how much you are required to move
My test on Saturday have you any advice on stopping ? Should I always put the handbrake on when I stop? Thanks Dane love your videos :)
th-cam.com/video/2yPJbwbqfB8/w-d-xo.html
This 👆 video will help answer your question, generally use the handbrake if you are on a hill, at lights or if stopped over 5 seconds.
Thanks Dane!! Any on ramps and speed ?!
This is on speed and progress
th-cam.com/video/LC5oMrwAovg/w-d-xo.html
As for ramps I don't have anything specific really yet although I cover them in my commentary drive videos.

Can you pls show us parking thanks 🙏🏽
I have done videos on parking, not parallel parking yet however but I will soon. th-cam.com/play/PLheoz7pGa31jPjblE0HXujSnb9LOAkd-3.html
Hi Dane , i was just wondering at about 4.19. why you did not go into first gear would that not be considered a t junction
Because I wasn't going slow enough to do 1st gear, if I had of went to 1st gear at that time the car would have jerked and jumped. I had right of way and it was clear so kept going, a few seconds later I did drop into 1st gear when I slowed more.
Obrigado!
De Nada 😊
Hi Dane,,, I've my test coming up and generally feel good about it,, but I still chug the car often when changing up and down gears,, it very annoying lol,, any general tips?
th-cam.com/video/Ywtp_o6WFr4/w-d-xo.html
The above video will help you, it's important to brake as you are going down the gears and don't lift the clutch too quickly.
Hello sir,can u do video on how to pass a high speed bumps or humps,im having a hard time on that, thanks in advance
I will try and do one on that in future and thank you for the suggestion. I would advise taking it slowly and in 2nd gear but roll into 1st if the ramps are particularly high.
Very good great thanks
Best wishes
Hi dane what gear is suitable for residential area? My tester gave me 2 grade 2s on the gears and I dont where it was was coming from. I remember i was only using 2nd gear on a residential area
2nd or 3rd, it depends on the residential area, if it's a wide and safe place then 3rd.
Nice video Dane,
What are your suggestions on speed and space we should maintain in bad weather days, like this weekend :)
Always drive based on the conditions and never treat the speed limit like a target, the worse the weather the bigger distance you should leave in relation to the vehicles in front.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive Thanks a lot Dane.
You're welcome
I have an older car Dane, 08 Ford fiesta, fourth gear at 50 in my car makes it really struggle for power, so I leave it in third. Is this ok? Or should you be in fourth regardless of how old your car is?
No it depends on the car, so you need to use your own judgement on this. It might be fine in 4th on the flat and downhill but on the uphill stay in 3rd a little bit longer.
Wait.....thats midleton! do you do lessons around that area? I'm sitting my theory test next Tuesday so I'm (hopefully) going to be looking to do my 12 lessons soon.
Unfortunately no I don't do Middleton, I do like Cork an awful lot so I would be a semi regular visitor to that great county 😊
John Cleary that’s not Middleton it’s Cobh
I was in both Cóbh and Middleton
Hi Dane, I failed my test and one big comment was me driving too slow.. there’s one road that has ramps about every 50m should I be trying to get up to 40/50km in between every ramp?? It’s 50km speed limit.. thanks a million!!
You probably should yes, you need to be decisive and confident and pick up a bit of speed if there's room between the ramps.
Hi dane I have my test tomoro just wondering why gear I should stay in when going downhill?
Depends on the situation and the speed , no simple answer
This is how I drive when I'm in economy mode. Thumbs up, great job!
Thank you
Hi Tyghe, for the test, do you always have to stop in 2nd gear and can you skip down gears?
Depends on the situation, usually best to stop in 2nd,skipping gears is fine
Can you explain when to go in the yellow box?
Never Unless turning right
@@DaneTygheletsdrive somethings when am in the yellow box waiting to turn right, the traffic lights turns red.
Go. Don't stay in the box after it goes red. If you do stay you'll fail your test.
What is the speed per gear for 6 gear transmission ?
P. S , I've tried looking everywhere online but no answer.
It's not a big secret but around 90km or either side of it should be fine.
Hey Dane could u do a bit on fly over and markings on the road in housing estates
Thanks for the suggestion
I have a problem of pressing clutch too much
Don't press it as much, brake more.

Hi Dane, my car is 1.4 diesel and is very high Geared. If i go into 4th gear at around 45km/h, the engine struggles. 3rd gear feels a lot more comfortable at that speed. Is this OK for the test / are all cars different when it comes to what gear you should be in?
You have to use your best judgement based on the car you're driving. A bit of flexibility goes a long way.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive thanks Dane

When you come down in gears do you fully release the clutch after changing the gear? When I come down in gear I brake , press in the clutch but if I fully release it it feels like the car is being pulled back
You must fully release it otherwise you will be coasting, try slow Down first before dropping gears and release the clutch very slowly.
Dane Tyghe thanks a mill dane
Best wishes
Do you have to change to 5th gear on a dual carriageway and if you stay in 4th is it a mark against you
It's not a case of just going to 5th gear because its a dual carriageway, you need to ask yourself are you driving over 70km? If so then 5th gear is best. If you don't adjust the gears to the speed then it will probably count against you.
Hi, can we take U-turn at Traffic signals with median in towns
Depends on the situation but I doubt it.
If you haven't done this video yet I think box junctions would be helpful! (:
I have done that in a few videos, such as my video on position turning right.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive ok, thanks! Will have a look now.

6:30 man i love how they say threes lol
Well at least I pronounce the t. In London a lad would say "free" instead of three. Mad Ted.
Suppose I am driving in the third gear and slows down but I don't return it to second gear I just accelerate and go IS IT OK
Depends on how much you slow down by, if you only slow down a little bit then that's fine.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive No I slow down nearly 10 to 15 km/hr but when I accelerate the car does not shake it just goes
Sorry are you in Midleton I need an instructor to get ready for my test
No I'm based in Wexford but I was in East Cork for a few days last week 🙂
Woow that looks like Cobh at the very start Do you do Cobh as well.
Sadly no, I was just there for a short holiday earlier in the year! Great place.
@@DaneTygheletsdrive You do you say it is to learn here because of a few hills and narrow roads and the many corners as you head to cork city ?
@@dennisbazanye7189 Everywhere has its own hills and unique roads, Cobh and Cork as much as anywhere else. This was between Cobh and Middleton.
Hi Sir, you said from 4th gear to 3rd gear it is below 30km/h. How many kilometers from 3rd to 2nd gear please?
Approximately 25km give or take

Dane Tyghe thanks your videos are amazing thank you for your dedication
Hi Dane, I have my test soon and just wanted to ask you a quick question regarding the automatic handbrake. My instructor has advised me that the automatic handbrake is acceptable for the test, but will the tester ask me to turn off the automatic hold for the hill start segment of the test? Thank for all your help!
The automatic handbrake is absolutely fine, I've never heard of a tester asking anyone to turn off the auto hold. I never recommend the auto hold anyway because I think it's easier to creep out at a difficult blind junction without the auto hold. But if you're comfortable with it then keep doing it.
Can you do around about pls
I think that you are asking me to do roundabout videos of which I have already done a lot of. Please check the link below

just wondering things would be different if you are driving a litre engine car. speed and gears.
Not that different - same advice generally with minor adjustments for the type of vehicle.

Good to see Cobh... A great video but I'd be demented to be in the car with you if you talk like that all the time : ))
Luckily for you and everyone else I don't talk like that in the lesson 😃
What's wrong with giving people a signal?
They can rush out without the proper observation
