      US: threatens to pull the plug on British investment unless Britain retreats from Suez after Suez is nationalised by Nasser, so as not to offend the Arabs or Soviets.
      Also US: asks UK to vote for US invasion of Panama in 1990 despite Soviet complaints, and then literally kidnaps Panama’s President.

    They may not be superpowers anymore but they left a very important legacy. Their language, English eventually became the global language, through them or through their successor/former colony the USA

      Jc Dizon i have often thought of this, i thought about how latin divided into several different languages, and how english might eventually do the same thanks to washington. but london is ultimately responsible

    • @xelgringoloco2

      The UK and US are equal parts to blame for that. The UK spread their language to every corner of the world and people were made to speak it if they wanted access to the biggest economy in the world. However now that America is financially dominant they're the reason that English continues to dominate. History shows us the Lingua Franca come and go. Like Latin and French did. Say if Russia had come to be the only super power in the modern day, I'd bet people would have started speaking Russian over English as a second language. It doesn't matter how many people speak a language, what matters is the influence you gain by knowing the language.

    • @FrennisDaemon
      @FrennisDaemon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Don't forget the influence of Hollywood and American / European pop+rock music. Those are probably the most influential mediums for spreading the English language.

      Guys the person you should thank for English becoming global was B.Gates and his creation - Windows. For it is the IT technology that spread English across most of the world, not colonization or warfare.

    The Suez canal operation was a complete success militarily. Unfortunately (for the British and French) the US government was annoyed that they had gone ahead (along with the Israelis) and conducted the operation without the permission of the USA. To teach these powers a lesson, America demanded that they withdraw. As the UK and France relied heavily on America for the funds to rebuild they had little choice. Not a big deal, but the idea of the military operation being a failure seems to be a commonly held misconception-when in fact it was an easy victory. The political situation was the problem.

      The same synopsis with Netherlands fighting to get control back over Indonesia 1945-1949 and more particularly in 1960 over New Guinea /Irian Jaya.
      Militarily the Dutch troops were succesful, but the goddamn yanks (and Kennedy in 1960) opted for economical oppression in favor for the indonesians.
      (Not per se FOR the indos, but for the own USA companies interests; in 1950 to gain raw material resources, in 1960 to prevent Indos into slipping into the hands of communism..).
      Geopolitics.
      Despite the freedom of Indonesia is genuine, the indos that rebelled at start were nothing but Jap incited murderers and Muslim Jihadis that butchered the western women, children and old men, and chinese indos.
      The transfer of sovereignty would take place AFTER order would have been restored.
      But the yanks (and Brits!!) would not have it.
      Some awful "thank you" for the fact that the Dutch called war on Japan first immediately after Pearl harbor BEFORE the americans declared war! and for aiding the oil boycott on Japan in 1941 when USA requested it.
      USA: a despicable unreliable ally.

    • @howiechang8516
      @howiechang8516 7 ปีที่แล้ว +160

      the first empire of the world is Akkadia of Sargon the Great, not Rome, and before Rome there is Macedonia, Carthage, Persia, Mauryan, and Assyria and all of them can be considered as superpower at the time. Besides, Rome has its own rival of Parthia and Han Dynasty.

    Really the original superpowers were France, Britain, Germany, Russia, Spain and the Netherlands. Basically all the European empires were superpowers. But I guess that if you were to change the definition to a country with military capabilities on every continent then you'd have to say just France and Britain. America only really emerged as a superpower after WW1, as before then there had only been a military of 100,000, which was tiny at the time.

    France answers this better doesn't it?
    France dismissed itself from the joint command for NATO, and conducted to nuclear experimentation which bestowed it its own nuclear weapons, while the UK was dependent on the U.S. for nuclear weapons through Polaris.
    And France announced that it sought to be its own political force, not in the sway of the USSR or the U.S., which is why it was so eager to form the European Union.
    The UK did have superpower status, but never made use of it, for example, backing down during the Suez crisis when ordered so by the Americans.

    • @hundhun17

      France had a smaller economy and population than the UK.
      It did not have as much money as the UK
      It had a smaller Empire.
      Its status had been destroyed in WW2.
      France only has more nukes because of its tragic history of being invaded and vulnerable position compared to Britain..

    One could argue the Netherlands was a superpower in its golden age (1586-1702), by then it had the power to use their power all over the world, for example Dutch involvement in the East Indies and even Cambodia, or involvement with the Native Americans on the other side of the globe. Besides the Netherlands had by far the biggest merchant fleet which consolidated their global strength.

      +EmperorTigerstar But France at De Gaulle's times was more independent from the USA than UK, building Europe with Germany, also having the nuclear weapon, keeping some important colonies (important resources in New Caledonia, space launcher in Guyane, and still the second larger marine territory after the USA). France was in the 60s and in the 80s the country in Europe which wanted the most to build in this continent a 3rd superpower, that's why for example De Gaulle didn't want Britain to come into the EU, he called them "the USA's Troyan", a bit like Blair in 2003 was "Bush's dog" in the Second Gulf War in which France refused to go.

    Fun fact, I ended up doing preliminary research on this topic because I was reading Good Omens and there was a little bit about how the ducks of St James park could recognize spies based on what bread the MI6, CIA, and KGB agents fed them while doing spy stuff at the park (also the angel and demon, because that's the plot). I always pictured the Cold War as an America vs Soviet deal, while the rest of the powers in the world side eyed them and hoped there wouldn't be nuclear war (the smaller ones were influenced and allied with one side or the other of course).

    Using the same reasons you could also say that France was briefly a superpower too. It also could, after WW II, send troops to other corners of the world and project political and economical influence over Africa, Asia and some places in Latin America, it also had it's own nuclear tests, it conducted or helped in coups to further their own agenda and interests. There is also the question of ther influence in post-war Europe, for exemple the ECSC that developed into the EU, or De Gaullle's strategy of nuclear deterrence against the inevitable delay of US help to Continental Europe if the Cold War turned hot.
    Also like the UK it was short lived, with the swan song being the 1956 Suez Crisis.

      Matthew Brown Can you show me the invitation? Because I haven't found any. Sure, a few lowly nobility did suggest it but they were cast out and considered traitors by Westminster. William III was an opportunist and quite a cunning man. I mean, he took over power in The Netherlands as a monarch after the current Stadtholders got linched at the start of the third Anglo-Dutch war. He knew exactly when to act and when not to.
      The biggest armada of the 17th century, hiring an incredible amount of German mercenaries and denying English soldiers the right to be in London doesn't exactly sound like a welcoming committee, does it?
      I know what you were taught in high-school but frankly, what you were taught was exactly what William III wanted you to think in order to avoid public restlessness; propaganda.
      Check out some more modern interpretations of the Glorious Revolution by English historians and you will realize that many consider it to be an invasion nowadays. The Normans still being the last who conquered Britain.

    The UK was not a superpower in 1944... at any "brief" moment. The only reason they were ever thrown into that mix was due to their role as an allied power in WWII. In fact, you listed every reason that they WEREN'T a superpower. This entire video proves my point. Their military was absolutely depleted following the war, and they quickly lost control over their huge colonial empire in the following years as a direct result. The beginning of the Cold War/End of WWII is most likely the exact moment the UK lost any form of "superpower" status, if not years earlier. This was an uninformed and essentially pointless video, you could have made this case for a handful of other nations. E for effort.

      @EmperorTigerstar  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Jaden Bennett I noted the reasons why they lost that status. A year or two still counts. And it's not uninformed considering I'm going by the original definition and use. But hey if my pointless video can get you to type such a long criticism then it's not completely pointless now is it?

      @NathanaelArchibald 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with Jaden Benett in the sense that you have made the exact same case of France : ex-dominant power crushed by the war, unable to maintain its empire against internal and external power, nuclear weapon nonetheless developped, and helped by the Marshall Plan. Also ? It was among the four occupying powers of Germany after the war. A photo in Yalta proves nothing.

    Funny how Germany (West-Germany of the Cold War) is always overlooked! They lost WW2, that's true, but if you look closely you see that the economic strength of Europe is still Germany, not France or the UK. Culturally they obvioisly dammed in, true. But look at sports and inventions. They are still top notch. Influential they are the superpower of Europe since the 70s and still everyone doesn't orientate to them. Even their neighbours! Denmark to the Scandics, Poland and the Chech Republic more to Russia and themselves, France to... France, Belgium and Luxemburg to France, The Netherlands to America and Britain. Only Switzerland and Austria because of linguistic reasons. The 20th century could have been the German century, the world wars changed everything. Still after all bad stuff and things that happened, Germany made the best after WW2. A salute for a nation we forget a lot, but owe so much. (especially Greece XD)

    Great Britain is not a superpower anymore directly Because of the usa; they overcharged on goods and materials half of which never reached our shores; they crippled our economy with their unfair loans; they briefly dipped their toes in both world wars purely for they're own gain, by pursuing their agendas at the treaty of Versailles in ww1 and potsdam & yalta in ww2 their agendas in these conferences made them what they are today; whilst the British were fighting the wars the Americans were negotiating on their own terms that would cripple the empire that saved the world twice.

      Nonsense...the Americans had the land and resources to become a superpower....
      The Americans supported Britain, not the Empire...they had already overtaken the British economically by 1910.
      The British Empire would have collapsed by the year 2000...just like the Soviet Union did...had world war 2 not happened...
      I think Britain may have been slightly richer if the Empire had gone on Longer though...
      If the Empire existed today...London would be in control of over 2 billion people, areas like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria, Palestine, its enough to give one cancer even thinking about governing this vast landmass!!!!

    • @jamienicol6743
      @jamienicol6743 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      hundhun17 they would not have been ruled from London many self governing states within th empire had already been established like Canada and India. A stronger and more integrated of the commonwealth would of been the current situation if Britain had not been crippled by the USA which would mean the commonwealth would be a super power.

      Joey Angotti That was the war against the Japanese within World War Two, I also believe that the USA had intelligence that pearl harbour was about to happen. Germany was never in a position especially after 1941 to win the war it could of been won without the Americans swooping in claiming they turned the tides by overt hanging their 'allies'

    • @ChevyChase301
      @ChevyChase301 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jamie Nicol actually if Stalingrad had fallen and the Americans lost midway we would be speaking German. We obviously didn't know about the attack as we left our battleships in harbor. Also, if we had known about Pearl Harbor what difference does it make? It still has america entering the war due to another countries aggression!

    The U.K.'s status as a superpower was in jeopardy in 1945 in the timespan of 31 years, it had fought not one but TWO world wars, and had had an almost decade-long economic depression in between. It wasn't so much the British Empire was "Bombed to the ground", and more like "The U.K. was tired of losing entire generations of men", whether they died or were crippled for the rest of their lives.
