  • I explore a few different builds for the Cipher class in Obsidian's Pillars of Eternity, the long-awaited spiritual successor of the Infinity engine RPG games of the 90's and early 2000's.
I show two different builds, a melee and a ranged cipher, and explain how many of the abilities work and what stats I think work best for the class in either build.

Cipher rocks! BUT: Pls play him as a rogue!!! The reasons are:
    1. The cipher does not meant to tank hits. Look at his stats!
    2. He has abilitys wich support playing as a rogue. For example: lvl 1 eyestrike wich causes blind/daze or lvl 2 cipher spell phantom army (hope thats the name) wich can cause multiple enemys to be flanked, from wich a rouge benefits as long as he uses weapons that can do the sneak attack of the rouge (dunno how it is called in english but hopefully youll get the point xD). You just need to pick the trait after you leveled up! Also other members of your party may be able to cause an ailment wich enhances your dmg output (fighter could throw the enemy down, mage can blind enemy groups ect.)
    3. You WILL have to move alot with the cipher in battle, because some of his (AoE) spells need proper adjusting! He should act in between front and backrow, so you benefit from being in stealth as well.
    4. Ciphers need the fastest attack speed they can get. Dualwield daggers for close combat! You will build your focus at godspeed! The second weapon should be a shortbow, to have the possibility to retreat from close range and still build focus.
    5. As soon as you have the soulwhip trait that enhances the normal 20% bonus damage of the whip, to 40% when focus is at max + the sneakattack bonus... OMFG!
So in the end you will have a spellcasting, dualwielding roguemage, that can hit very hard and do some neat magic! At very last I will tell you how I made up my stats:
Race: Human, since they have the ability to enhance precision (+7) and damge (+15%, fits with the soulwhip at max focus) when endurance is under 50% (wich happens quiet often, because cipher has no tank-like stats)
Might 14, for a decent amount of bonusdamage to everything!
Dexterity 16, for the attack/spellcast-speed of course!
...and Intelligence 18, since you want to have the maximum spelldamage and range!
Other stats are 10, for not having minor penalties!
Sure you could min/max the dex, but you simply should stay at 16 and 10 for Constitution, Perception and Resolve because: Constitution? Cipher already has a rather low Endurance/Vitality, so penalty?... Nope! Perception? Cmon bro, you need to hit! Resolve? As a roguemage you have to cast in the frontrow from time to time so you need some concentration!
In the end there are plenty of stat-enhancing items you can equip, so you should concentrate on 1 stat to max out and let items max or enhance the rest!
...the only thing ciphers cant really do, is tanking and there is no efficent way Anyways, I hope I could inspire you to try out this build if you havent already! Was plenty of fun playing it, now I do a solo-cipher-run ;D

Excellent advice! Thanks! I think I'll add an annotation above to let people know there's some good ideas in the comments below.

Thx ;D But one thing is not right I guess (and it bothers me xD)... Intelligence has nothing to do with spelldamage... It suppose to be spellduration (sorry, but english is not actual the language I speak with)... But yeah, its quite some text and I think everyone gets my point xD

the best cipher build actually is with a bow & kona's chant to boost reload speed and attack speed. they focus extremely fast and can charm a whole party or do massive aoe damage in a short amt of time. buff em with potions in heavy fights with more speed to attacks and watch em rip a whole squad in seconds. at least thats how i build mines, shes insane in dps but low on health, but she stays way in the back anyways, out of harm.

Great guide mate, newb Cipher here - went with the class because it felt the most lore-fitting (for the story, well as much as I had heard about it): stoked!

Cyphers in PoE1 are basically better rogues. They can do all rogues can and more.

I picked up POE a couple of days ago and have been putting in some serious time. Enjoying the game immensely but hit a hard stop when my party was wiping when battling spectres and other spooky types. I read that a melee Cipher was a class to have in your party. Thanks to your video I'm now making progress. Your guides are the most coherent and newbie friendly I have watched. I hope you create some more POE content now that the new DLC has been released.

+SpikeBlighty Hey thanks so much! I'm glad this video could help. One thing another commenter mentioned that I found very helpful later on was using a blunderbuss as a Cipher. It gets you a lot of focus quite quickly. It's been some time since I've been in Pillars of Eternity, but I should get back into it.

Should try the blunderbuss for a ranged cipher. You may think "wait this thing is slow as fk I wont get any focus like that?" but it hits up to 6 times with one shot and each counts as attack. You can easily get 12 or more focus with one shot.
Also if you indeed do take the blunderbuss the skill penetrating shots seems kinda overpowered combined with it. The only real drawback of the blunderbuss is that its basically 6 small attacks so damage reduction is 6 times as effective. Getting that 5 DR reduction from penetrating shots gives you a whopping 9 DR reduction on every shot negating that drawback.
E: Oh i almost forgot. You will sooner or later find an item that increases the focus gain per hit. Do NOT equip those kind of items (i've found 2 so far) as they will bug out and make it so your cipher will never ever get focus per hit again. This is irreversible so unequipping and/or reloading wont help. There is a fix for this but its inofficial and rather fiddly.

Interesting, I hadn't thought of the splash damage, but that makes sense. Worth trying out. Especially if you have high dexterity to offset some of the slowness of the blunderbuss.
Thanks for the tip. I'm hoping they'll get this bug fixed ASAP.

Vickriman Yes, my main character is a melee Cipher with high Intellect and Might.. and medium dexterity but with the dual wield talent is very fast... this game is awesome!. ;)

I am listening so many people talking about tactics in this (other wise great) game and I say bs with capital b and capital s...
Everything happens so fast, pause doesn't help to keep track what happens, commands you issue I don't know if was executed or ended after executed or what was their result...
All we do is spam an enemy with the whole party... Real time maybe looks fun but is inpractical... This game needs a turn based mode like they did for pillars 2...
Only when you can see the effect of an act, you can analyze strategy and tactics... How you can talk guys about tactics in this mess???
And I am a rome total war player and I know about mess 😂😂😂...
I love the game and the style it has but seriously, it can't be enjoyable playable in depth... It's best points are the exploration of the story and places and characters.
Battle, as any game of this kind is just a problem if not turn-based...

Sadly it's like you didn't put any effort into making this guide, almost as though you were a little bored and thought meh, I'll make a video without preparing for it. What I would have liked to see was maybe you and Eder only in a party, in the wilderness fighting 1 or two mobs and just focusing on the Cipher abilities and attacking style. Instead we got this mess where half the time you aren't even showing the cipher, but the rest of the party, not to mention you didn't even have enemies lined up to fight. It feels like you were going for a casual, "oh hey there, you caught me exploring" vibe which really misses the mark for a tutorial video....
