- Check out this video on how to build a party that dominates Path of the Damned Difficulty on Pillars of Eternity.
While doing a playthrough of Pillars of Eternity, I've received a lot of feedback from people having trouble with the game. This video shows the techniques and party I've used to play through Path of the Damned without too much difficulty.
The purpose of this video is also to test my set up for more gaming videos and review videos. I plan to do review videos on every game we live stream with strategy/commentary. Any feedback is welcome!

Useful video, just a few things I'd add :
- Chanters make actually pretty good tanks. They have high starting deviation and on higher levels they have that phrase that gives a renewable 30 dmg shield to everyone. I had great results with only Kana+Pallegina for defense on PotD (no fighter)
- Ciphers rely on debuffs such as paralysis and prone, so they're amazing along with a rogue and probably other melee DPS, but I don't find them that useful in a party with lots of spellcasters.
- I never tried a playthrough without a cleric ; I think it's possible but you gonna rely a lot on potions and scrolls.
I wish devin still played dnd based stuff like this on stream. I love hearing his take on these games and I only started getting into them this past couple years.
As someone who has logged a lot of hours on this game I would throw in some advice too. This guy gives a very balanced party that expereinces lots of classes which is great and I strongly recommend for a playthrough. However if you are looking to straight shit on people the absolute best classes are priest, druid, or wizard. The vancian casters especially at higher levels are fucking nuts. Early game you can pretty much get through by riding on the back of chill fog and the foe AOE blindess spell from wizard or the Storm spells from druid and priest is just in a league of its own with the accuracy buffs and later on you dish out some disgusting damage with shining beacon. Now all you need is a wall between those 3 casters which I recommend to be 3 chanters with very high lore skill. Scrolls are invaluable, use them, spam them, craft them. Scrolls of valour and defence are clutch and scrolls of moonwell are also top tier. Basically all you need is a bunch of vancian casters and somebody to sit in front of them.

this has been said before of course but i'll point out that you need to get your cipher a blunderbuss, not an arquebus or pistol. These are really slow. The blunderbuss hits 6 times when shot, allowing for instant focus regeneration and continuous spellcasting
Tim Olff The blunderbuss is still good, but they changed focus regen from +2 per hit to 33% total, which nerfed how awesome the BBus was. It's still good, but not nearly as overpowered as of patch 1.05.
My groupe for path of the damned: DPS Party (you want to kill everything fast)
Main Character (controle + DPS): Cipher (maximum Might/Dex/ Int; minimum constitution) wearing light armor (or no armor), using crossbow and then pike.
First tank: Paladin with very hight defelction and the speed bonus for all groupe (make sure to have the +1 engagement)
Second tank: Chanter, speed + debuff enemis+ semum
DPS+Off-tank: Barbare with 2h weopon
Mele DPS: Rogue with 2 weopon (focus enemis DPS and control first as the mage for exemple)
Range DPS: Rogue with very hight interrupt
The cipher + the 3 dps kill everything in no time, the tanks dont make any damage, they hold the line the longer possible while the rest clean everything
I'm assuming changes were made to Wizard at some point, bc I was practically soloing PotD as a wizard from lvl 2 on
I would swap a Druid with a Ranger, Rangers do the most distance damage and give you an extra off tank. Also they do decent damage melee. Or do a chanter, they are great at melee and ok at distance for damage and have better spells than given credit for, they can charm, paralyze, summon drakes, stun etc. It's like adding an extra chanter. Personally, druids only have a few good spell, which you can keep on scrolls for other party members, and their spirt-shift is basically frenzy, but worse.

Chanter weaker classes? You obviously have not tried spamming(activate and deactivate with one second intervals) the level 9 chant The dragon Thrashed the dragon wailed. I got the Triple Crown Solo achievement with it. Chanter is a very solid class to start the game with, if choosing their phantom summon. Only problem is getting to level 9 from level 7. The rest is a piece of cake, I beat the adra dragon in about 5 minutes utilizing summons and tDTtDW with a large chant area (never needed to go down to the adra dragon since you summon a group on top of the cliff to initiate the fight).
(my character was a chanter godlike Moon: str 18 con 12 dex 3+1, per 6, int 18+1, res 18 +1, first trait always choose fast runner, second weapon and shield style)
When someone says chanter is a weak class, he's immediately announced he's a noob

Not able to handle as much aggro, good for locking up engagement with whatever spills past your primary tank.

chanters are hella srtong later on. IDK what this guy is talking about. they can build tanky and deal constant damage with some of there offensive chants, in a huge aoe. you just need to pair them with some other suport that can help them tank better. Also max con' and Int'. defences that protect against prone and stun are a must with chanters.

I am confused as I haven't played the game yet... but familiar with games so here is the Q. You pick more than 1 class? You're giving a list but you only get 1 right?
There are 11 classes. 8 are covered by potential companions. Monk, rogue and barbarian are the 3 that aren't. As the PC, you get to build and customize the main, however in most Inns, you can hire custom companions to accompany you. I don't think there is a limit to this aside from cost, and the 6 person max party.
Thank you for the info. Now I just need to find away to min/max the fighter tank. Every one else I don't really care I just need 1 hero really unable to die or go down for at the very least to be able to hold out till the rest get back up.
Cipher PC with 20 int 18 dex, 12 might, 10 in the rest, dual welding longswords and I'm killing it. Yes, Path of the Damned. Party: Cipher (me), Fighter, Paladin, Priest, Chanter, Wizard. Working great. Also on Wizard, early on they don't do a ton of damage but they have pretty good CC. Even early on it's worth it.
Pike rogues have the highest survivability of the melee rogues being able to hit two step away within range of backstab and this is because being in melee range of a mob means it can turn from the tank and hit you making mobs with longer reaches or spells more of a threat and the other opinion is going higher defense and a shield and you can do both.

I love wizards, minus they kill your team with aoe so they need to be in the front line or you need to micro to the point of stupidity for them to function at all.
Wizards are definitely not for dumb people and need a lot of attention. But they ARE the strongest class in the game, just like in BG1, BG2, IWD and IWD2.
Huh? Higher level AOE spells are very to use. Wouldnt frontline Wizard be troll?
You just need to aim properly. Red zone hits everyone, yellow ring only hits enemies. Easy.
Or just do it like I did and go with a full wizard only party. I specced them so they could spam brutal AoEs at the start of combat and get to the edge with Spirit lance each with crazy high defense spells layered. The only thing that really gave me any trouble was the adra dragon.
I was wondering how that would work, spell casters in this game are just so powerful, i was fighting in the skaen ruins and the final boss him and his casters just fry me. I think i was under levelled, but aloth by a mile has the most damage in my party, i could only imagine having 3 damage dealing wizards and 3 debuff wizards would be brutal
I was wondering what your thoughts are concerning the changes that the latest patches have brought. There are those claiming that Cipher has now been "nerfed" as well as some changes to the fighter.
I like it. My team is almost entirely the same, except I use a rogue instead of Cipher, I've had problems with my cipher but I don't have a gun on her, which might help. I can't imagine they really do more than a rogue. My rogue (and druid oddly) do so much more single target damage than anyone. Finishing blow works wonders, often killing weaker characters outright without any injuries.
Cipher can charm and dominate, has all of the best debuffs (just as good as the wizard, even has petrify), and can break even with a rogue in dps because it has pretty high (but not as high) single target damage and stellar aoe damage.
I have both 1 and 2 of POE but never played them beyond a hour.
Which race and subrace should I use for your build? And stats allocation? First time POE player. Thanks

Roy Moonen "Barbarian" is the only class that has no player character. Unless it is new or something... As a result, your main character is the character that should be in all parties. So a fighter/tank or something that you like that will always be in the party.

There are no monks and rogues either. well one companion is a rogue but you only have him for 1 very short tutorial dungeon.

potd composition:
main tank: fighter
offtank: palladin (fav), barbarian (dmg), monk
healer: priest
rogue-like: cipher(fav)/rogue/ranger
dmg: wizard/druid
dmg: druid/wizard

You don't need the NPC's for any quests aside from their own, however they make a difference in the possible endings and they may not be as ideal as a character created at the inn but they are quite viable. I prefer using the NPC's because I like their interactions, dialogue interjections, and their quests.
3 rangers with bears (tanks), cipher, wizard, rogue (weapon thats extend your bufs on hit + block pain from cipher = DEATH MASHINE! ) EVERYTHENG DIE! EVERYTHING!

Hey how should I build each of these classes. Oh and the smacking isn’t that bad it’s more annoying that so many people go into the comment section and say the same thing the person before them said
That's exactly what I was thinking, I wouldn't even have noticed it if comments didn't point it out, as for builds, try what you like, you can always respec all characters and doesn't matter that much, I would advise you to read a bit up on the mechanics of the games, because more than the build, knowledge helps you clear many challenges, and build your character to deal with what you're currently facing, maybe re spec often to get that slayer talent if you're having trouble, don't go for static builds, maybe you will fail a few times, but for me that's the fun of completing a challenge, it's much more rewarding. Although I would say this, early on stacking deflection on your tanks and accuracy on your deeps, and try de-buffing accuracy on enemies and remember most buffs don't stack and would overwrite each other so keep that stuff in mind, work you enemies weakness, maybe lower someone's deflection(Priest spells) and then attack them. That the advice I could give you. Have fun! :)

I’m barely starting my first play through of POE, and I see that you can only have a party of 5. But this video gives a party comp based on 6 characters. Am I missing something?
i really think you can have a party of six. i make all of my characters and if i remember correctly, i get 6 party members

Good synopsis
My team is same than you but i prefer rogue then cipher cuz 2 best dps weapon are dagger and they are easy and fast to get
on 80% of the game
And i prefer rogue fast deadly damage (+ escape)

Aha...tbh I'm only 30 hours in the game on normal & that's exactly how I build my party.
This game doesn't seem to need a lot of "Endgame-Knowledge" once you understand the basics. I just don't know yet if that's a good or bad thing...

Yes. It's very possible and wizard is often talked about as one of the best classes for potd solo.

I havent finished it yet, but I would say definitely viable. There was a 2 year gap between your video and his though, so the class may have been updated in that time to make them more viable.

How is fighter more of a tank than barbarian?? Barbarian has by far more health than any other class
No possible. The final game changed attribute. In march constittution 3 = -21% health today -35 health., perception 3 = accurancy 0 today accurancy -7. Look video triple crown solo.

Best classes:
1. Ranger
2. Druid
3. Monk
4. Paladin
5. Priest
6. Rogue
7. Chanter
8. Barbarian
9. Fighter
10. Wizard
11. Cypher
Best parties:
Any with a Druid, Ranger or Monk in them and a Rogue and a Chanter as well. I imagine for Pillars 2 the Druid/Monk, Monk/Druid and Ranger/Druid will be the 3 best classes and the best parties will be ones that have them.
Why there are 10 classes which should be pretty much the same in any other rpg XD?

I would suggest just playing, after a while you sort of get it.
Min maxing makes it harder without the experience of how to start fights properly.
Positioning is key for most of the classes and a min maxed dps character will drop after one or two hits.
Learn how to engage without aggro on your dps, and learn how to peel mobs off your dps with your tanks.
You can makes all the abilities pretty reasonable and useful.
High stats of 15 will help your characters all around and allow for more mistakes.
Perception and resolve should not be overlooked.
In old dnd terms:
Deflection = AC
In order to get hit they have to roll higher than your deflection.
Accuracy = attack roll bonus
I'm not entirely sure but I think all the attack rolls are d100's
so 100 deflection would be similar to having 20 AC
Which is pretty hard to go over with tanky character in this game.
Aoe damage is defended by reflex, so , the higher your reflex the better if you don't intend to be targeted often.
Higher dex/perception over resolve.
And constitution can be somewhat low, 8 constitution has no real detriments to most characters.
6 con can get you in trouble, and after some experience I don't even bat an eye making a lot of characters start with 3 constitution. It's more dangerous until you get half way through the game. then your characters tend to have better tools to deal with low endurance and health.

One more thing, as you get more money, you can respect a high level character as many times as you can afford and play around with the results.
You can also buy party members at various levels to build from scratch and experiment with as well.
just skip on building your fortress and use the money to do that if you are still having trouble.
You don't need to min/max at all. Create the character you want and have fun. Experiment! That's why they made the attribute stats the way they did, so you can steer away from standard archetypes without gimping yourself.
You smack your lips ALOT in this video. Like noticeably. Something to work on maybe? Other than that, liked the video. Helpful.
just a friendly bit of constructive criticism - try not to smack your chops so much. If you hold your tongue in the back of your mouth before opening your lips, you'll find it's very easy to avoid

I am super angry about this game. It CRASHES all fuckin time, when i try to go from one location to other. I have win 10 x64, 16 GB RAM and no problems with other games. This game is fuckin pile of shit.

First time watching. You seem knowledgeable and well informed. However, the lip smacking is unbearable. I’ve never seen someone interrupt their speech just to smack. It’s almost as if it’s done to add emphasis.
what sucked about this game is that you can't beat it with only one character..I hate having big parties, it just consumes so much time setting up moves.
+glok1989 Yes you can, there is even achievements for that called Tripple Crown Solo: you beat the game on hardest difficulty, with Iron mode on (one save, when you die save is deleted) and solo. But it's totally different play style - you don't go around killing everything and do all the quests. Only the necessary to go on.
Nice video, very informative from what I watched. STOP THAT INFERNAL CLICKING!!! I don't know if you were clicking your tongue or clicking a pen, but it made the video unwatchable. Sorry, but thumbs down, learn to keep your background noises to a minimum
Is this party recommendation for real time with pause or turn based? How does the lineup change based on the game mode?
