I think one of my favorite parts about this song is that if you don't try to listen to where each measure starts, you can find an underbeat for the song and bop your head to the song. I think the best way to find this is near the end of the song, during the "with my feet up off the ground" part. If you just fall apart to the rhythm and tap your foot in a 4/4 pattern, you'll find it.

You need to do what you've been doing with Floyd's Dark Side album Lilly. Do the whole album, for me this is Tool's equivalent of Dark Side of the Moon and should be listened to in full. The next tracks after this one are the Holy Trinity of "Disposition", "Reflection" and "Triad". It's difficult to separate these tracks as they flow beautifully in to one another and link up so well. Hope you can do this one day. Keep up with the Floyd stuff too. Floyd and Tool are two of the greatest bands of all time for me.

So 1 + 0 = 1 , 1+1=2 , 1+2=3 and so on. Maynard sings using the sequence up to the number 13. The same with the music. If you listen to the drums closely you will pick up the pattern. Not only the syllables divisione follow the Fibonacci sequence, but also the duration of the song, the time in seconds when the various parts of songs begin ( when the singing starts for example), the time signature and the lyrics itself. Everything in this song is based on Fibonacci or the golden ratio. It's an amazing display of compositional skill.

Lateralus and Parabol/Parabola hold strong regardless of the day but songs after that can vary depending on the day and my mood. there is no bad track by the band and they are one of the best live shows I have ever seen, the only other band live that I enjoyed just as much was NIN. spiral out and enjoy the ride :)

Black and white are the base colors in alchemy, followed by red and yellow. This is what that section is referencing. This is I guess what it's refering to: While most of Maynard's lyrics including this one are syncretic and heavily layered, one of the best guesses people have come up for this particular lyric line is that it's alluding to the alchemical process, the transmutation of lead into gold (also found in The Grudge, "transmutate these leaden grudges into gold"). The whole song, as mentioned by Danny, has a very "evolutionary" vibe to it, if I remember correctly he said it feels to him as if it promotes human evolution/transmutation/growth. The color stages of alchemical transmutation: Black - Nigredo White - Albedo Red - Rubedo Yellow - Citrinitas It also talks about skin colors as well, I guess in the sense of "its a war against black and white" then red and yellow (native american/asian) started becoming part of the picture or something like that. That's another interpretation I've seen over the years. That is also part of the Fibonacci cycle in the syllables. It also speaks about evolution of colors babies develop in their upbringings, black and white are the first colors, followed by red and yellow, then blue finally. Its kind of layered a little bit. lmfao
Perfect description. My opinion is that Pink floyd is the only other band that was ever on the same level as Tool in production and attention to detail and experimentation. I would give the edge to PF actually. AND YET I'd have to say that the feeling of Tool is most like Rush, almost to a scary degree. Undisputed best drummers of their generation? Check. Extremely deep, philosophical, probing lyrics (with exceptional word play and clarity) with sometimes hopeful, inspiring endings? Check. Masterful time signature switching, poly rhythms, etc. that are still unparalleled to this day? Check. Compositionally, Rush and Tool are very different, however, they are a perfect vibe match.
Imagine this - Being in the middle of a 111,000 person crowd (Download 2019) and everyone is nodding their heads to a different time signature - That is Tool - All united but all individual !!!

There are many interpretations of this song, but I think it was written to examine life in general. The song, as well as the entire album’s, structure was carefully planned; this specific song is based on the Fibonacci sequence. So as a sort of double-standard, this song wants you to embrace the random, but “embracing” could be interpreted as such for studying its anomalies, which in turn could be found as over analysis.
It is a fine line between analyzing, and over-analyzing. It requires nuance, and the strength to resist unfounded conclusions or bias. I think you're absolutely right about the song. I think it's saying, "Explore, and discover, but be careful to take the world as it truly is, rather than how we'd like it to be".

Red and yellow represent emotions - anger and fear. "Seeing red" is coming used to describe being angry, while being "yellow bellied" is used to describe someone who is cowardly. Seeing in black and white, acting in anger and fear, are things that come naturally to every one of us, and this song is about moving through these negative behaviours, pushing the envelope of our own minds, and coming out the other side a better person. This is what, in essence, spiralling out is all about. Spiral out.
My #1 pick is "Parabol/Parabola". That one is basically one song in two movements, so it's important to watch a video with both (some videos split the two parts up, which in my opinion is disgusting.) Also, whatever you do, DON"T PAUSE NEAR THE TRANSITION BETWEEN THE TWO PARTS! It's incredibly powerful, so you want to get the full effect.
With all the hidden mystery, psychological meanings, Fibbonacci this and that, the song actually makes fun of overanalyzing the song. Listen again without thinking and just enjoy the music for what it is. Those visceral feelings you get are worth more than the mental exercize of trying to guess what he meant.

The sequence follows the rule that each number is equal to the sum of the preceding two numbers. The Fibonacci sequence begins with the following 14 integers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, 55, 89, 144, 233 ... Each number, starting with the third, adheres to the prescribed formula. So 1 + 0 = 1 , 1+1=2 , 1+2=3 and so on. Maynard sings using the sequence up to the number 13. The same with the music. If you listen to the drums closely you will pick up the pattern. Not only the syllables divisione follow the Fibonacci sequence, but also the duration of the song, the time in seconds when the various parts of songs begin ( when the singing starts for example), the time signature and the lyrics itself. Everything in this song is based on Fibonacci or the golden ratio. It's an amazing display of compositional skill.

That's my favourite Tool song, The Grudge. It is an album opener that literally left me and my friends jawdropped and speechless when we first heard it :)
this track and parabol/parabola as well as the patient are some of my oldest tool faves. Lateralus and Parabol/Parabola hold strong regardless of the day but songs after that can vary depending on the day and my mood. there is no bad track by the band and they are one of the best live shows I have ever seen, the only other band live that I enjoyed just as much was NIN.

While most of Maynard's lyrics including this one are syncretic and heavily layered, one of the best guesses people have come up for this particular lyric line is that it's alluding to the alchemical process, the transmutation of lead into gold (also found in The Grudge, "transmutate these leaden grudges into gold"). The whole song, as mentioned by Danny, has a very "evolutionary" vibe to it, if I remember correctly he said it feels to him as if it promotes human evolution/transmutation/growth.
The color stages of alchemical transmutation:
Black - Nigredo
White - Albedo
Red - Rubedo
Yellow - Citrinitas
It also talks about skin colors as well, I guess in the sense of "its a war against black and white" then red and yellow (native american/asian) started becoming part of the picture or something like that. That's another interpretation I've seen over the years.
That is also part of the Fibonacci cycle in the syllables.
It also speaks about evolution of colors babies develop in their upbringings, black and white are the first colors, followed by red and yellow, then blue finally.

Perfect description. My opinion is that Pink floyd is the only other band that was ever on the same level as Tool in production and attention to detail and experimentation. I would give the edge to PF actually. AND YET I'd have to say that the feeling of Tool is most like Rush, almost to a scary degree. Undisputed best drummers of their generation? Check. Extremely deep, philosophical, probing lyrics (with exceptional word play and clarity) with sometimes hopeful, inspiring endings? Check. Masterful time signature switching, poly rhythms, etc. that are still unparalleled to this day? Check. Compositionally, Rush and Tool are very different, however, they are a perfect vibe match.
Imagine this - Being in the middle of a 111,000 person crowd (Download 2019) and everyone is nodding their heads to a different time signature - That is Tool - All united but all individual !!!

@Lilly Jane Reacts in my humble opinion, MJK has some really deep lyrics in Vicarious, Jimmy, and certainly Wings for Marie, which many listen to right before they listen to 10,000 days. Wings and 10,000 days are tribites to MJK's mom. Jimmy is about him dealing with his mom's stroke when he was eleven.
No danceable rhythm is key to the experience of randomness. The best way to enjoy this is in the dark, surround sound and relaxed. Chemical alterations as you see fit.

Lilly, you are one of the best reactors when it comes down to breaking down the meaning behind a song. There are many interpretations of this song, but I think it was written to examine life in general.
The song, as well as the entire album’s, structure was carefully planned; this specific song is based on the Fibonacci sequence.
So as a sort of double-standard, this song wants you to embrace the random, but “embracing” could be interpreted as such for studying its anomalies, which in turn could be found as over analysis.
It is a fine line between analyzing, and over-analyzing. It requires nuance, and the strength to resist unfounded conclusions or bias. I think you're absolutely right about the song. I think it's saying, "Explore, and discover, but be careful to take the world as it truly is, rather than how we'd like it to be".

Great reaction, have to admit I was waiting for your reaction to that first crash of music at the start 😅 You're right about the bit about seeing things in black and white, but the bit about red and yellow is something a lot of people don't get... Red and yellow represent emotions - anger and fear. "Seeing red" is coming used to describe being angry, while being "yellow bellied" is used to describe someone who is cowardly. Seeing in black and white, acting in anger and fear, are things that come naturally to every one of us, and this song is about moving through these negative behaviours, pushing the envelope of our own minds, and coming out the other side a better person. This is what, in essence, spiralling out is all about.

My #1 pick is "Parabol/Parabola". That one is basically one song in two movements, so it's important to watch a video with both (some videos split the two parts up, which in my opinion is disgusting.) Also, whatever you do, DON"T PAUSE NEAR THE TRANSITION BETWEEN THE TWO PARTS! It's incredibly powerful, so you want to get the full effect.
