  • In 1995 Kirk Karwoski performed a 1000 pound squat for tow reps in training. Later that same fall i did 1003 pounds / 455 kg in a competition. That was the first 1000 lbs world record in the IPF.
Kirk "Captain Kirk" Karwoski was a six time IPF world champion along with seven time National champion. Kirk came in to powerlifting in the 80s and dominated as a junior lifter. In the 90s he competed as a senior at the IPF wolrds and USPF antionals were he completle dominated and set world records. He retired from competitive powerlifting after world in 1996. However he did a raw competition in 2004 as a last performance, this was before raw lifting went big. He set a squat and total world record in the 110 kg / 242 lbs class.
This is footage from Video power magazine.

The 1,000lbs double is even more impressive when you consider the energy he had to expend on warm ups alone. His final warmups of 860 & 940 are elite lifts on their own, but to then walk out 1,000lbs and dunk it for two?! This is legendary.

Thank you for letting us know your experience, albeit completely irrelevant to my point: most people watching will overlook that his final two warmups were enough to win his weight class and he still had enough in the tank to double 1,000lbs. There will only be one Captain Kirk!
