    Why are you watching it if you think its all crap? What's the point of swinging a stick and hitting a ball or a puck? We do what we love because we love to do it. Period. I've lifted in the same flight as Kirk at a World Championships. Still my greatest day ever.

      PhysiqueAsthetiQa I agree. He is an awesome lifter. Idk if I respect his attitude towards people in the gym though. If people were using the squat rack he said himself he'd yell at them to get off or throw a plate at him. At the end of the day, this guy is a legend in powerlifting but def not in the humble personality department lol

      True... I think he’d get kicked out of a standard/commercial gym if he ever pulled that stuff nowadays. My Cousin was a Powerlifter back in the early 90’s; nothing big, a few local meets... The stories of what took place at power gyms in the early 90s are are insane. Drugs, guns & everything in between. Point is, I’m sure that behavior was perfectly acceptable in his gym.

    why is it that in every powerlifting or weightlifting video there are people arguing about how good fighters powerlifters would be or how they would get beat to death in a match against boxers or mma fighters?? i mean.. really? who the fuck cares? these are different sports, the athletes of each discipline train for diferent goals and have different talents, so why compare them? what's the point of this absurd generalisation? go compare a sprinter with a basketball player next..

      Not entirely true. People know when he would squat, and if someone was in the rack when he wanted it, he would tell them 5 minutes wrap it up.

    The idea that anyone who trains in MMA or boxing can take down a heavyweight elite powerlifter is just ludicrous. Could a woman who takes boxing classes every day beat up a 250 pound man (one who plays sports and thus has some athletic ability)? Probably not, no matter how good of a fighter she is, the man's strength and size gives him too much of an advantage.
    It's the same situation here - even if you're the best fighter in your boxing gym, your MMA studio, even if you've won a tournament... the brute strength level is just too much. They will be able to toss you around like it's nothing. It's only once you reach elite, professional, world class levels of fighting skill that your fighting ability can overcome the strength of someone who can squat 1000 lbs. And even then, I don't count the powerlifter out automatically. The lifter will most probably lose in a cage, but Kirk in his prime against a UFC champ out on the open pavement in a fight to the death? If he manages to grab the fighter and slam his head into the ground it's lights out, permanently.
    This isn't a Bruce Lee kung fu movie. Strength does matter. It just hurts people's pride too much to see something as definitive as a number in powerlifting that they know they can never attain, whereas they can make all kinds of subjective claims about their mystical fighting prowess.

      First off, I have no idea where this thought came from.
      Strength is a huge portion of capability, everything starts with strength, but you have to point a gun to hit a target which is a skill. If raw power were everything, a bull would kill every matador.

      I'm old and fat now but I've dabbled in both kickboxing and lifting, strength definitely helps but there is also a point of diminishing returns. Also in terms of knockout a lot of that is more about timing and accuracy than sheer power. As the old saying goes "it's the punch you don't see coming that hurts the most." But I agree that a UFC level fighter is probably too quick and too skilled for a champion powerlifter. A guy on youtube that took a few boxing or jiu jitsu lessons … not so much.

      I know your talking about fanboys, but in Donnie thompsons defense he squats pretty deep most of the time, and sometimes during his most extreme squats that hes trying for the first time etc, he will squat a little bit different, but hes handling weight no ones handled and its new to him too

    There are weight classes in every single fighting sport for a reason. Fighting up 10 weight classes against someone with visible abs and a 1003X2 squat is not realistic for even world class mma fighters below 200lbs

      HulkSmash315 it gives high explosive power, something fighters need. Lifting huge weights gives you powerful punches and kicks.

      @@LinusE no it doesn't. I'd go as far as to say extreme levels of powerlifting will make a fighter less able.
      I can outlift my cousin's total with 300ish pounds, a professional cage fighter that weighs in around the same as me (180-190lbs at 5.7 each) yet he can easily slap my shit in sparring because he has been fighting for nearly 18 years. We got his squat up to 200 - 210 kg and he got way too stiff to do headkicks.
      In fighting power and endurance is superior to strength. You really think a super heavyweight equiped lifter could take on someone like Miocic, Ngannu or Overeem? When was the last time a powerlifter took a sledgehammer to the head ?

      @@CeroAshura If you’ve looked at Westside and Conjugate you’ll see that clearly fighting sports can take advantage of explosive strength in correlation with sports specific training. Being stiff isn’t necessarily a downside from squatting high weights, I have no idea how much sports specific training the person did on the side, how much stretching and how much isolated exercises etc

      @@CeroAshura also, if you’re a extreme level of powerlifter you’re a powerlifter. It’s very difficult to be elite level powerlifter AND a high level of any other sport at the same time. Especially since powerlifting and boxing takes advantage of one thing: explosive power and dynamic strength. Static strength helps PL, not boxing. High levels of cardio helps boxing endurance, muscular endurance helps powerlifting not necessarily boxing
