Always love seeing artists "toys"...my favorite area in art stores!
Me too :)
I’m just starting out and I’m an absolute fan of your work. Or I should say starting over. Roughly 54 years ago the art teacher at secondary school put me off with a crass comment. I’m having a go again and your videos are so helpful.
Art supplies, to an artist, are like a treasure chest full of gems. Thanks for a great video and info.
I’ve watched parts one and two of this series and can’t thank you enough! These tips and recommendations are brilliant and priceless ! I have been trying to work up the courage to start a regular drawing practice-again. I loved drawing as a child and was very good at it. Like most kids, there was no fear of failure or disappointment because I didn’t feel I needed permission or to prove I had potential at the jump. Yes, I know how ridiculous and contradictory that sounds, but fears are usually not only baseless, they are irrational. Thank you again for sharing your experience and talent with us. I see this video was made at least two years ago; hope life is treating you well and you have achieved any goals you set for yourself.
Will the electric eraser clip my nose hair too?? 🤣
Great video, most helpful, thanks.
I purchased the Kum long point sharpener, a few mths ago and thanks to your very informative video I realised this came with extra blades, how I managed to over look them I've no idea probably because I wasn't looking for them. for that I thank you :D I recently purchased a great eraser called the "Vanish 4 in 1 eraser" It doesn't crumble, and rubs just about anything almost back to white (depending on what your rubbing out) its fabulous.
Thank you for the detailed info. I haven’t really been into art seriously since high school but my daughter has gotten me back into it, and I had no idea what currently would be good to get for pencil drawing so I appreciate it.
Hi! I only used small pencils sharpeners, but because I really love drawing I ended up buying a Derwent manual one. I carry a Blackwing in my pencil case because it’s a two step. :)
Excellent explanation of different art materials, Smoothie. Very informative and interesting. Looking forward to more of your demos/videos!
Angelica G Thanks Angelica, kind of you to say, there will be plenty more videos and demos coming soon :)
Great presentation of your drawing materials, very useful and helpful advice, thank you very much Smoothie :)
***** Thanks for your comment Madi, much appreciated :)
Very useful and helpful video! I'm a beginner and each advice is very important. Thank you very much!
You're welcome, thanks for the comment.
Thanks, you answered several questions I had for you.
Thanks Virginia, You're welcome, glad I could help.
Thank you 🙏 very helpful
Very informative,thanks for sharing.
Maria Kellner Thanks Maria, you're very welcome.
Wonderful very useful
great kit you have
Thanks!
Thanks again for another helpful video Smoothie :) I msgd you earlier asking you about the Derwent Battery Eraser, that was before I found this vid lol.... so I can see that you recommend the one I mentioned in my msg lol. Keep up the good work mate.
Do you apply the spray fixative BEFORE you do the watercolor wash or AFTER the whole painting is done? Great videos!
I would be intrested in a video on the use of the fixative you are now using. I am starting to get finished drawings that I am intrested in keeping. Very little to nothing on TH-cam about the subject.
what are your recommendations for pencil holders for small pencils?
Two excellent and informative videos Smoothie which I am sure anyone just starting out on the wonderful journey into into drawing will find invaluable , you didn't mention the water soluble graphite of which I have tried both Derwent and Faber Castell and I favour the later as I do with most of my drawing equipment, as you say its all down to personal preference , try as many makes as you can and decide which ones work best for you and as for pencil sharpners I sometimes find the SAFETY razor blades give me the best "sharp" :)
Maxine Fewster Hi Maxie, you are right, I forgot to mention water soluble graphite, I don't use it too much, but I will try to include it in another video demo, maybe one all about watercolour pencils? I know a lot of artist like to use razor blades for sharpening pencils, I use one for pastel pencils and charcoal pencils, I just prefer the pencil sharpeners for graphite and coloured pencils :)
I recently threw away a Kum long point sharpener..and had no idea it included sharpeners for mechanical pencil! There were no instructions other the sharpener
Where did you learn to be so good at graphite drawing!?
accessory wise i have: [sharpeners] kum masterpiece, dux adjustable brass, the big triple triple hole, kum somethingEB, kum micro and a bunch of other ones, [other stuff] bunch of rubbers, and embossing tools. im gonna get some more sharpeners, and I've got a TON of pencils[like 1000 sets, and some super rare staedlter mars lumograph EE and EB], and I'm still gonna buy more. I HIGHLY recommend kum masterpiece sharpener, and uni mitsubishi pencils.
I recommend buying from TopColorSharpeners.com, Cultpens.com and Jetpens.com but jetpens is in america :(
well that's an impressive collection of kit.
Just found your channel, couple of weeks ago, and working my way through your videos enjoying them all!
Buying bits of kit, do I need a battery sharpener for pencil rubber?
Thanks for really detailed help, hope there's lots more to come!
Hi Kay, thanks for the kind words, Its not necessary to use a battery sharpener for a pencil eraser, just a regular pencil sharpener will work perfectly, I personally don't recommend battery sharpeners anymore, they tend to eat your pencils, my battery sharpener broke, which was a blessing in disguise (in my opinion) I only use manual sharpeners now.
I'm getting the long point sharpener. If i had never seen this video, i would've gone and got some old mangled sharpener, and if it were not for other videos i would be using Noris School [which isn't bad!] but its.... too simple for me. Thank you for being honest, active and unbelievably AMAZING!
Thanks very much, you will love the long point sharpener!
I recommend 'Alvin' sharpeners. They have made a 3 hole one which one is normal, and the second makes a really long graphite stick, the third sharpens the long graphite stick. It's called 'the big triple'. It's amazing. I saw their amazon thing they have several cool sharpeners. The con is that they are in the US so you have to pay shipping. :(
They are available in the UK too, I have one, bought it shortly after making this video.
I can't find it. Could you tell me the link?
What link?
I had always tried to draw with my eyes sometimes not all that easy is to use a straight edge
I guess it all down to personal choice....whatever works best...
I like drawing with straight edge what I should of said Smoothie hard to follow with your Eyes I don't see these small sharpener blades over here in these art stores Like Michael's or in Drummondville Quebec here I live or Joanns in Bangor Maine where would you find these items. in case would try to file them
Hi Edward, I am surprised that Michael's doesn't sell spare sharpener blades, I just looked on Amazon USA and found these, amzn.to/2mcYiuL
thanks, smoothie found them
Thanks for part 2 also, again very informative for beginners. One question: Is printer paper ok to use for sketching/drawing just for practice; or what do you recommend? Thanks :-).
+Teresa K. Funny you should ask, I have a video planned about paper, I will be posting it soon, but to answer your question now... printer paper is fine for sketching and planning, but I wouldn't recommend it for finished drawings that you plan to keep long term, reason being...printer paper isn't acid free like drawing paper, so in time it will deteriorate , I mostly use Daler-Rowney drawing paper.
+smoothie77 Ok thank you; I'll be looking out for your new video (looking forward to it).
Would you say that all of your eraser pencils have different qualities? I am thinking of buying all of them including a Tombow Mono Zero because I need to achieve precise very fine highlights etc. Thanks.
+Fred Morris Hi Fred, yes definitely, they are all different, you could probably miss out the Faber castell if you get a Tombow, the Derwent is soft and tacky the Staedtler is quite hard and abrasive, the Tombow and Faber are similar with the Tombow being finer on the tip
+smoothie77 Thanks for the info, saved me £4.85 on my eBay order, and yes I also ordered some Dixon Ticonderoga pencils. Can't wait to see if they live up to all the hype, but at that price who gives a damn!
+Fred Morris No problem Fred, glad to help, you cant go wrong with 12 Ticonderoga's for 99p +p&p ...bargain !
I got a koh I noor hardmuth white eraser pencil without a brush. It's pretty cool
There are no rules in art it's all personal expression ;)
+Agui007 Great comment! I couldn't of said it better myself :)
Michael Thomas You're most welcome friend :)
