I purchased the derwent larger size about 8 months ago.. It does have an auto stop, of sorts ... when the pencil has reached max sharpness it does stop eating up the pencils .. at least the 150 I just did had that result... Just sharpened 150 new prismacolor pencils without one break.. without ONE problem.. freakishly sharp pencils .. first to last .. I am impressed !!
It's an excellent sharpener, but like any long point sharpener, it eats pencils FAST.

I have a Deli 0635 sharpener and after doing a little test I don't trust auto-stop anymore. I took 2 brand new Polychromos pencils and sharpened one of them as recomended (pulled the front of the sharpener out to the point where it stops and kept sharpening as long as the sharpener was eating the pencil), then I took the second pencil, pulled the front of the sharpener just a few milimeters out and made just a few moves with a crank. My both pencils were sharpened perfectly but the first one was about 0,7cm shorter than the seecond one! So, despite the fact that auto-stop seems to work, the sharpener eats much too much of the pencil. Since doing that test I never fully pull the front of the sharpener out anymore, always just a few (2-5) milimeters. I recomend everyone to make such test with their sharpeners, especially if they use expensive pencils.
Found this video today, and I am glad you did it. I find it is always useful to know how you can properly sharpen your pencils, and avoid breakage and excessive fast consuming expensive pencils. Thank you!
I have the derwent superpoint, works great. I can sharpen my luminance, polychromos, and prismacolors in it very easily. Thanks for the review
The Derwent does have an auto sharp, but you aren't cranking long enough to get there. It's a long point sharpener, so it takes a while to cut as much wood and lead as it takes to make that kind of point. It eats pencils FAST, but if you want a high-quality long point, that's the price you have to pay. This is six years later, but one thing hasn't changed for me. I have four crank sharpeners, including an old Helix, but I don't screw any of them onto my table or my desk. They just get in the way. I sharpen with two hands, and it works fine. This is how almost everyone I know uses these sharpeners.
I also don't worry about a sharpener leaving marks on my art pencils. I mean, seriously? It's a pencil that I use a lot. Almost the whole thing gets ground to sawdust in a pretty short time. There are times when I go through four pencils per day, though two is the norm. But my 3H, HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B pencils just don't last very long. The 2B is the one that really goes fast.
My favorite brand is General's, along with a mix of Derwent and Faber-Castell. and these pencils are not cheap. I know several pro artists who have switched completely to mechanical pencils, with a couple of clutch pencils in the mix. I also know several who have switched to very cheap Chinese made art pencils. I don't blame them. The best 2B pencil I have ever used is a standard, extremely cheap pencil students in Chinese universities use. It's better than my Faber-Castell, at least to me.
After trying a friend's Chinese pencils, I'm just about positive I'm going to make the switch, as well. They were every bit as good as my Faber-Castell 9000 pencils, and better than my Derwent and Staedtler, at least for my drawing style. And unbelievably cheap. I've also been using mechanical pencils, Pentel P205s mostly. Every pro artist I know who uses a lot of mechanical pencils has a few of these. One artists I really admire called them the "light sabers" of the mechanical pencil world, and I agree. They cost five dollars, or less, if you catch a sale. They have no lead indicator windows, and I use a thin foam grip on them. They made me put my rOtring and Staedtler in storage.
I have one with 3H lead, one wit HB, one with 2B, and one with 4B. This covers about eighty percent of my drawing needs. I also use two Prismacolor colored pencils, a black and a white. This gives me a deep black without the shine of graphite, and the white is perfect for highlights in tiny areas. I have both Faber-Castell Polychromos and Caran d'Ache colored pencils, but the Prismacolor white pencil is far better than the white in either of these sets, even though the rest of the Prismacolor pencils aren't as good.
I also use cheap skethbo0oks. For me, sketchbooks are not for finished, perfect, commercial drawings. For these, I use Strathmore Bristol Smooth, or Strathmore Bristol Vellum, and sometimes Bristol Board. Sketchbooks are for just what they say, sketching. There's no need to pay a high price for this. My favorite cheap sketchbook is Walmart's Pen Gear. It's under nine dollars for a hundred and fifty sheets of acid free 100gsm paper. Several artists we tried it on couldn't tell the difference between it and Strathmore paper of the same weight, which costs a heck of a lot more per sheet. I also use HP 32lb (120 gsm, the way printer paper is weight in the US premium printer paper. It's smooth as glass, which is the surface I use most of the time with graphite. I save paper with tooth for colored pencils.
Anyway, a great sharpener is a good thing, and I wouldn't skimp there. But even pro artists don't always buy the most expensive of anything. There is simply no need for it, regardless of what anyone says. The absolutely wonderful artists who use nothing but a few mechanical pencils proves this, as does those who use Chinese pencils. And all those who understand that a sketchbook is just for sketching. Drawing paper is for drawing. Though I have been carried away and done a few finished drawings on the Pen Gear paper, and even three on the HP paper.
I picked up one from Aldi's 5 years ago for £2.99. It''s brilliant and can adjust how sharp you want it to go.

Jason thanks for taking the time to make your informative videos. I appreciate it. I keep a straightened paper clip on a magnet on the side of my current crank handle sharpener to clear the blockages as my sharpener breaks my pencils often. I have added a new sharpener to my wish list now I know they aren't all the same.

Are there any pros and cons to it? I plan to buy one in the future.🤔
@@MayDay14000 I, personally, haven’t had any issues with it. Very adjustable for what point you may want. Hasn’t damaged any of my pencils. In fact, I bought 2. Also have a Derwent (the smaller one), and a Dahle 133 ( solely for Prismacolors ) -I still use the M + R for my primary.

Thank you for demonstrating these pencil sharpeners. You are well spoken and get right to the point. I like that in a demo. The sharpeners did a nice job. I like the auto stop so I would not waste the pencil.
I have the big Derwent and I do not pull the gizmo all the way out when I just want to refresh the point: I only pull it out half or quarter of an inch and that seems to be enough and it seems to prevent the pencil wood being overly trimmed. As I've had it for a only couple of days now, I'm not prepared to testify about this under oath, but it seems to make sense in a way... Excellent review as ever, thanks.
I have a Lidl crank handle sharpener, it has the point length adjuster, 7mm-12mm pencil size, gentle grip and auto stop and it doesn't wiggle on the desk. It was £6.99. It's the best sharpener I have ever used. They have them on offer 3or 4times a year.

M+R is my favorite because of the stop so I don't eat up the pencil. I like the adjustment knob so you can make a more blunt point. But the best thing of all is the rubberized grip so it does not chew up the finish on my pencils. I never liked the teeth marks on the outside of my pencils.
Hello, I also use the M+R, and I find it has worked great until now but the rubbed grips have gotten consumed after some time. Now they just can't seem to firm grip the pencils: they turn and turn, and they can't get sharpened any longer 🙁 It only does dull points. Would you please give me any suggestions, if you experienced something like this? Thank you in advance 🙏
The Möbius and Ruppert one looks fantastic.
Bought an M+H one recently and within 20 or so pencils it no longer did as good a job. It took many many cranks in order to get the same point it previously gave me in just a few. I'm disappointed as I LOVED it.
Alexandra Ai would contact them to complain. Mine still works fine. Sounds like a fault.
I have a derwent super point sharpener and it is great on using graphite pencils but you have to be careful when you use colored pencils cause it eats a lot away, the most till now was 1cm shorter......but i still love it 😍
The Mitsubishi KH-20 would have been nice.....next time show us the internals.....would like to see the blades and their mechanisms......very informative though.....

Great review. A crank pencil sharpener is on the shopping list for tomorrow, but I wasn't sure what to buy. Even if I don't buy any of these brands (will depend on what's available at the art supply store), at least I know what to use. Lots fancier than the old crank sharpener that I used to use, which was from the 1960s or the early 1970s, all it ever had was a crank and grinding barrels. No fancy holder or auto stop. ;)
And you're right, hand held blade sharpeners suck.
Great video Jason! 😆 I just happened to purchase the large derwent sharpener 2 weeks ago and tried it 2 days ago. I am really happy with it. I bought it because I saw someone using it to sharpen prismacolor colored pencils without breaking them. The couple I sharpened did great.

The Kum Masterpiece sharpens Prismacolor pencils incredibly well. It's expensive but we'll worth it if you use those a lot and want super sharp points.

Just got the Derwent Super Sharp for the long tapered point.
It does deliver a long sharp taper. The long taper does look pretty cool but whether it is really any better than the standard taper one can get with
say a brass bullet sharpener is problematic. I will say one thing, after sharpening a number of different pencils l’ve unhappily decided I can in no way afford to use this sharpener on any of my Polychomos, eats up way to much pencil. I will reserve this sharpener for Prismacolor and other cheaper pencils if at all.

I invested in a beautiful 1920 Dexter #2 for 40.00 US and its a wonderful sharpener. No plastic junk, nice and heavy, and adjustable points.

I have the Derwent Mini and you CAN tell when the pencil is finished. You can tell by the resistance feel; when it gets to a certain point (sorry about the pun) you can feel there is no resistance and the 'cranking' goes loose. I have been very happy with it but I am itching to get the M & R because of the rubber jaws. The marks that the others make on the pencil barrel really annoy me - petty I know but it does!
I'm a wee bit OCD and can't stand the pencil being chewed up by the grip. I now hold the pencil to prevent it turning and it comes out nice and clean with no grip marks at all.

Excellent review! I already got my Derwent Super point, I think is the best.
Of course, if you want a custom point, you can use a sheet of 100 or 150 grip sandpaper. A shop grinder or maybe a Dremel tool with a grinder wheel is probably the most efficient sharpener, as long as you watch what you're doing.
Appreciate yr thoroughness. Just ordered the big Derwent and the m+r... my stash of handhelds is pretty (frustrated for sure) big... so this investment may be the last...hopefully.

I wanted to comment here specifically as I am morphing from coloring intricate mandalas to charcoal and pastel drawing and I needed a decent sharpener. Your review helped me so much. I chose the Derwent Superpoint and got it today. Excellent machine and am glad I bit the bullet and purchased this one. Just wanted to say thank you in helping me find the best sharpener for me.
On request...could you please do a review on soft pastels, pencils or pans, just the pastels, and specifically, a comparison of the student grades like Blicks, Faber Castells and Jack Richeson? I'd like to get a good quality in a beginner grade as I've seen in many videos a stark difference between the super cheaps and the super expensives. I'd like the best quality for the lowest price. I sure could use your review as pastels are a whole different beast than pencils and markers.
I had one similar to these, and though I don't think you mentioned it, it chews or bites the pencils barrel, which is NOT how I like to take care of my pencils, whether bargain brand or high end. Looks like the M&R didn't 'bite', thank you for taking the time, good review, love your accent!
I have the Derwent Mini and I worked out quite quickly that it didn't auto stop. I find that the grip chews the pencil as it isn't strong enough to hold he pencil from turning so I actually have to hold the pencil to prevent this. I found that about 4-5 turns of the handle gives a beautiful point. Overall I am pretty happy with this sharpener at Au$ 29.
The best sharpener is an exacto knife. You get to define exactly how long you want the exposed lead to be, and can create chisel sharp points.

I bought the smaller Derwent about 2-3 yrs & it's still brilliant! It's not difficult to judge when to stop. Maybe you could have also mentioned that when the pencil breaks inside it's easy to remove the back & free it up🙂
My metal Derwent has an automatic stop. It just takes a lot longer to get there than you would expect. I didn't realize it was a feature until I saw a review of it well after buying it. One warning about every brand of long point sharpener I've owned. They eat pencils up fast, and they don't like 8B or softer. With these pencils, or colored pencils, stop cranking after four turns and check the point.

The crappy pencils use recycled wood. NEVER USE RECYCLED WOOD PENCILS! they may seem like a good eco choice but they use harsh chemical binders to hold the wood together which is worse for the environment in actuality. The best Pencils come from sustainable wood sources (Small grown for purpose trees that are replanted) its better for the environment and much higher quality pencils. Many manufacturers sold everyone on the recycled wood thing when its even worse than using Virgin wood. demand better pencils because they last longer due to the use of Virgin wood stability and they sharpen better without breaking. Buy durable goods that last longer instead of buying cheaper products that end up in a landfill in a year. Buy once, cry once.

Jason, have you tried the Swordfish Curve, yet? It might be considered as “better” since the rubber grips don’t dig into the paint of the pencil like how the Ikon does.🤔🤔🤔
The Swordfish Curve also has the little dial where you can make the pencil have a blunt or sharp tip, similar to the M+R Sharpener.✏️✏️✏️

Thank you, perfect review. South Africa doesn't get Swordfish in, but I see the Derwent is available in our local shop so I will definitely try that one out. Blade sharpeners is nice if you have time, but it is frustrating otherwise :-)
Hi Jason I bought a Derwent Crank pencil sharpener . I brought the Derwent mini cost me £ 15.00 from a very expensive Art shop . I tired to sharpen my Derwent it was wonderful perfect . So silly me I through the box away wish I had not . I went and sharpen my next pencil and it wouldn't work the blade is loose and I can't tighten the blade . So I am put off from buying another I live in the.UK . Could you tell me why it has done that . I am using a double ended Stadler pencil sharpener and it work's a gem . Your review was great Karen
Hi! Thanks for this video. I currently have the Derwent sharp point and it’s great for graphite, but I found it was not good for soft pencils. So I’m looking for something that I can use for coloured, pastel, carbon and charcoal pencils.

Thanks for the review. I got a different brand, the Muji. It sometimes stops, but not always. I've found 3-5 turns is usually good. One thing I would like to know is if there are sharpeners that sharpen oversized diameter pencils, possibly up to the ferby giant. My little Muji doesn't sharpen thickish pencils. My Muji works fine except no way to fasten it to the table which I don't like. Since it's small, probably the size of the mini, I might keep it with my plein air sketching backpack and for travel. I just got the large Derwent on sale and am looking forward to fastening it it the table.

The problem with the derwent mini is it's great for a couple of weeks but afterwards it stops touching the pastels but still sharpens graphite excellent. Can't understand the difference personally. Confusing.

The best at a reasonable price is the japanese Mitsubishi KH 20....................but its made under license..........in China!

Thank you. This review is excellent. Not sure if the M&R sharpener also sharpens jumbo color pencils? Does Derwent large sharpener have the rubber jaw or just M&R?...and does it sharpen jumbo pencils?
Bought the larger Derwent yesterday and was most disappointed since it is incapable of sharpening its own brand pastel pencils (contrary to the claims made in the info leaflet in the box. After sharpening several CarbOthellos it no longer works and doesn’t feed the pencil through. Teeth on the clamp leaves indents in the body of the pencil. I definitely don’t recommend Derwent rotary sharpeners.
Which one do you think eats up the pencil Less?? I have a crank and don't use it cause it eats up my Prismacolor pencils.

Hi Carole, I had the same issue you had, also with the same sharpener. Could you please tell me how I can fix it?
@@elisacavaliere1446 The metal screw in the center of the crank is the secret. Turn it counter-clockwise to adjust to make a sharper pencil tip, clockwise for a more blunt tip. There is a small diagram on the surrounding plastic bezel that illustrates the direction to turn.

I have to say that unfortunately, I think that the problem is actually not this, because I have used the metal screw from the very beginning to adjust the sharpness according to which pencil I was using... But now the small rubber grids just can't hold firmly the pencils any longer 🙁 This makes the pencils turn around and around and not getting any point 😔

How do you keep the sharpeners sharp?
Some you can replace the blades on ... especially higher end. I’ve not read where you can resharpen the blades.
I've got a hand crank sharpener from the 1960's Velos Solo 555, I've never had to sharpen the blade, I just clean it with a brush.

Thanks for the video, I am leaning toward M&R but wonder if it will work for Conte pastel pencils? They are thicker than other brands.
Please note: at 0:56 he states that the M&R accepts from 8 mm to 11.5 mm pencils. A previous commenter (Andre van Wyk) also mentioned that it accepted his larger pencils.

Jason tested graphite, color, (including cheap versions of both) and pastel pencils in the video, and they all worked on all types. Commenter Andre van Wyk, above, also stated that the M&R sharpens his Staedtler charcoal pencils.

I have the Derwent Superpoint mini and can't comment on the others, but when a lead breaks off, you twist the base of the handle and pull out the core. A gentle tap usually knocks the lead loose, although sometimes I use a sharp pencil or a pin to poke it out. I don't get many breakages but it's very easy to resolve.
Thanks Jason! I went to look for the Swordfish Ikon on Amazon but only found a Swordfish Curve in US for $54 USD. No Ikon found. Are these the same?
Cedar is one of the softest woods in the world. So soft it can't be used in any load bearing structural capacity in the construction industry. I would have let it life but you said it wax a hard wood with such conviction that people would assume you had verified your information before sharing it with us.
Nice review. That big Derwent is basically a rebranded Carl Angel-5. I've had mine for 20 odd years. But mine does auto-stop. I replaced it with the M+R because it can take oversize pencils and it has the rubber jaws. It is also the only one that can actually sharpen my Staedtler charcoal pencils that I otherwise had to sharpen with a blade. They sell for about £10 here in South Africa. They are also the same as the Dahle 133.

Hi Jason, I got a M+R last week, after going through your video, which was very informative, thank you. However, the sharpener is not functioning properly. I started with a standard pencil and then moved on to my Faber Castell and Carbothello pastel pencils. Few of them sharpened well at the sharpest setting, but a few just won't go the distance, and this after just one session of sharpening. I removed and cleaned sharpening apparatus, but no change. Did you experience this? If so, were you able to sort it out? M+R ticks all the boxes, so I don't want to return it. Appreciate your insight. Thanks!

This was very useful, thank you! You should find ways to make your videos short though. I don't need to see you sharpen the pencils, just show afterwards for each, stuff like that. Maybe speed the video up a bit or talk faster without changing the ability to understand what your saying. Not to harp, but just some constructive criticize for thought.

My derwent pencil sharpener won’t work when I turn clockwise the pencil won’t come out sharp I don’t get it. Piece of crap waste my money
