Forgot to mention, it is nearly always worth it to take the morale penalty to be able to buy everything useful with reputation. The morale penalty is a straight stat reduction, so usually you're only losing 1-2 points. This has an incredibly small effect on the units performance and partway through the battle the unit will have leveled the stat enough to counter it entirely. You can get a huge advantage in equipment by purchasing most of the rifles and the better cannon throughout the campaign.

Nice fight. Enjoyed seeing the secondary strategy!

Nice adjustments, nicely executed and very well thought out. Especially the second part where you try out a new strategy and tactics. That cartwheel pincer maneuver was jus awesome.

In reference to your explanation of his failings at Richmond and the Seven Days, I've heard McLellan described as, and I quote, "[an] example of caution as a bad trait."

I agree with what you are saying because Jackson’s valley campaign does not get any fame compared to Shiloh Antietam and manasas

I wonder if there are deeper unit commands, i.e. double-line, picket, fire by volley, fire by rank etc.

The fallback and reset was an interesting way to approach this. Seemed to work OK, but does involve a lot of fighting over open ground. Looks like going 2x artillery, 2x sniper, 2x infantry might work out really well with this. Pull back far enough that the AI just stands around. Work on the infantry with the artillery while the snipers take out the enemy artillery. Then just surround and wipe out.
Nice to see you showing the experimentation process. Figuring out what the AI tries to do in a battle and then exploiting that logic is what eventually turns 2:1 odds into an easy battle and worse odds into a reasonable option.

this battle i found you can use the units they give you not your own as bait to get them to charge you then your units behind them fire into them and route them quickly.... also i brought 1 cannon when i did this one reason being it adds morale damage and routes the units i used 24 pounders... Note: when charging units are charging you if you hit the fall back on the unit they are charging often times they will stop charging and also target a different units thus letting you hit them in the flank with the unit you just told to fall back... on legendary the AI is very aggressive so luring them in with letting them charge is a great way to inflict losses. I have also found that mass targeting of one unit at a time routes the star 3 units quicker especially if your cannons are targeting them too. good battle here though... this battle also can be one that you wipe the map of troops also skirmishers form yoru main infantry if micro managed can flank the charging units well ... and you can also send them around behind his whole force thus encircling them and killing his arty in the back... the supply wagon they have is 187 strong so its a large one capturing it early with skirmishers is a nice way of limiting his artillery power! glad to see the rifle upgrades helping out!

your second play through was great with the flanking and moving around with legendary i find you have to do this to get him out of position and route unit after unit this way great JOB!

I think you should have pressed the center with the free regiments at the very beginning, while they pressured the flanks they left the center very open. As soon as your troops were in position you should have formed a salient at the objective.

That’s what I did when I fought this battle. I used the free regiments given to me to counter charge while I ran up my main force. My right flank fell, but capturing the center is all that matters, and taking the trees gives you a big advantage

I recommend giving the best rifles to the units with the highest efficiency and firearms stat. The HFs should be passed to the best units, then the lower quality weapons should be passed down. The most important number as I play is the range. The amount of damage that 2-star units with good weapons will do compared to units with 20 efficiency is significant. As a general rule, give good weapons to good units, and lower quality weapons to lower efficiency units. Giving good weapons to green units is a waste of money, green units don't have the skill to use good weapons.

The seven days war was the peninsular campaign right?

      @TheHistoryGuy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes. This was the first major battle of the peninsula. The seven days started right after this.

Actually the siege of Yorktown and the battle of Williamsburg was the first battles of the peninsula campaign

@@chasemurraychristopherdola7108 yeah that's why I said first major battle, though I suppose in terms of numbers engaged, Williamsburg was a decent size engagement.

I liked version 2 a lot more than version 1. I think in ver 2 that one of the officers lost was an allied officer. The trick to not losing officers is to stay on high ground and in good cover. And out of melee.

I'm thinking using the fallback strategy while bringing multiple snipers and artillery and relying on the AI to just stand around might allow clearing the battle with almost no casualties?

In this battle, after the first couple of charges, the enemy force collapses. You have to move forward slowly to keep his units in range. But yes, micro-managing artillery and snipers would be very successful and result in a very high kill-ratio. The down side would be that there is a limited time to kill all of the enemy force, so in order to max the number of kills the union infantry will have to aggressively push forward and stay engaged. Otherwise you will run out of time before you get them all.

@@SomethingCompass The fall back seems like you might be able to let the AI clump into the center and then you can completely encircle it with detached skirmishers. Hard to tell if you'd have the time to grind down the clump though. I've always just had the allied units hold in the nearby cover and that's always gone well enough I've never bothered trying anything else.

In my last battle on legendary I fell back to a defensive line, and that tactic worked well. I recommend if doing that to detach skirmishers to slow down the charging enemy units on the right and left flank. But it is possible to fall back successfully without taking many losses. Once the entire union force is together, the AI is in a hopeless position.
      - The only weakness I see is that on legendary the union will need a sufficiently large infantry force to hold the line. I always bring an artillery unit, but sacrificing another unit slot for a sniper could be risky. It might be that the allied artillery is all that you need, and in that case bringing a sniper and all infantry would work. But you know how much I like 24h in close support of infantry.
      - This is a battle where detached skirmishers can do great work and keep overall losses down.

If I'm looking at the right spot the mod wouldn't have helped. Managed to misclick in the middle of the melee on an allied unit instead of the intended target @12:58. Really annoying when that happens if you overlook the color of the resulting arrow.
