His "Memoirs Of The Confederate War For Independence" is amazing as it really brings historical characters to life and it includes everything from the battles he was in to camp life to the little adventures he went on such as the time he and Colonel Baker of the 1st NC cavalry went drunk driving in a wagon after a wine tasting. I know that at least one of the taverns along the route of the ride still stands. For instance, the crossroads at Old Church still has a tavern and it’s out-buildings still standing after nearly two hundred years.

Love the series. I live in Richmond and all these locations are familiar. I go to Hanover Courthouse a lot and I have a friend whose property borders the crossing at Totopapotami Creek.
Same here, I grew up in Chesterfield, now live a bit north of Mechanicsville. It's always a shock looking at Civil War maps and recognize all these places and able to at least visualize the modern version of it. I also lived in Harrisonburg for a while, which was fun recognizing the areas that Jackson's Valley Campaign was fought.
It's fascinating to me how you portrayed the actual nuts and bolts of why Stuart was so valuable to Lee: firstly in intel and recon, but on a secondary level he served as a wonderful propaganda tool for the Confederacy as a way to boost morale. Awesome vid!

@@awesome24712 why would anyone want their enemies circling their positions? Besides, there is nothing more important than the safety and morale of your unit. The Ukraine crisis is a prime example of that. They are winning primarily because of their will to fight. With the union's already shaky morale, allowing a cavalry force to sneak behind the lines and wreaking havoc without a strong response would only serve to help lower morale even further, making it hard for field command to make proper actions

In this raid, besides learning certain information that scouts could have learned, Stuart messed up McClellan's communications and transportation by tearing up miles of rail lines and telegraphs, along with capturing many fresh and worthy horses for his men. Good quantities of other supplies in the form of food, clothes, and other equipment were also captured. All of this was done at the cost of one man. Southern morale was greatly boosted by the stunt along with a strong confidence put forth into the abilities of the Southern cavalryman.
Awesome stuff as usual. It makes you wonder what McClellan is thinking here. Of course he thought he was outnumbered but JEB just circled his entire army going north to south. Why didnt he reinforce his right flank? Battle of Gains Mills could have turned out differently. Was he relying on McDowell to come in from the north? More quotes, love the quotes!! :)

If you don’t mind me asking but when you do the Maryland campaign can you do a video on Jeb Stuart’s second ride around McClellan aka The Raid on Chambersburg and this raid is called the second ride around McClellan because it duplicated his first reconnaissance ride around McClellan and like the raid is interesting to me because the raid contributed to president Lincoln’s decision to replace McClellan but the raid also interests me because on their way back to join Lee’s army they would get within 8 miles (13 km) of a small town that Lee’s army would fight at during the summer of the next year and that small town was none other than Gettysburg and this raid also interests me because like a lot of people around Gettysburg all they think about when they think of chambersburg in the civil war is the burning of chambersburg and during the second ride around McClellan Stuart would not loose a man to death or serious injuries and the second ride around McClellan was longer than the first one with the first one being 100 miles while the second ride was 126 miles and during the second ride Stuart secured the parole of 280 soldiers, captured about 1,200 horses, 30 public officials and at least 8 local free African Americans and Stuart also destroyed a lot of property and the value of the destroyed property was estimated to be about a quarter of a million dollars at the time and the only casualties that Stuart suffered on the second ride around McClellan and also there was more men on the second ride around McClellan because during the first ride 1,200 took place in the first ride but the second ride he would have 600 more men on the second ride bringing a total of 1,800 men.
Will we see the accomplishments of Mosby and his Rangers in future videos? His raid on Fairfax Courthouse? The Berryville Wagon Raid? The Fight at Miskells Farm?
The Confederation had to defend its Capital above everything so I think Grant could reach a better condition at the battlefield only and not the triumph in1862-1863. It is 100% true the Trans Mississippi and the Western Theaters won the Civil War for the Union! After Gettysburg Slocum and Howard corps sent to Western Theater to strengthen (Grant first) Sherman and this was one of root cases of Sherman's victory. Grant arrived east in that time, when his strategic aim was that the North Virginia Army could not send troops against Sherman and Thomas. Only Rosencrans was not the good leader in Georgia in 1863 and the Civil War could have ended in the summer of 1864.
He should have been doing recon and map making. Neither army had accurate maps of the Peninsula. Stuart did no recon for Lee again until after the disaster of Malvern Hill. This kind of contempt for the foe would return to haunt them during the Gettysburg campaign, with even greater consequences. Thanks for your work.

I can't remember much about after 1st Manassas. I don't recall much threat to be saved from. He did a bunch of organizing and training. At Antietam he should have destroyed Lee and maybe ended the war. Without that army the South could not live.

Joan of arc was the same, she had zero tactical thought beyond charge them, "won" very few battles, and still became a saint. Many stories you think are full of substance are just myths or written by people that lied.
I love your videos but I have to say I did not enjoy the waving flags/pictures on the map. It was too busy for me, and looked like a heat mirage. I personally would prefer for only the flags and not the pictures to wave on the map in the video if you can do that, or if not than for both to remain static. It is a minor gripe though. Great video overall.
This ride was important and it ascertained important facts that help Lee develop his operation against the federal right flank, no battle can be fought in won without knowing what you are fighting
Very bold of this Stuart guy. Most impressive hopefully this is a one time thing and he doesn't make it habit of running off when people need him

McClellan was incompetent, see the Pennisula campaign. He was replaced by Pope, who also got his pants pulled down by Lee
Probably relying on McDowell. There is some overlap between the events here and Jackson’s Valley Campaign which screwed up a lot of Federal war plans.
Resisting the urge to go all in on an attack at white house landing must have been a hard call for a flamboyant cavalier like Stuart.
