I don't have many " real world friends" to paint with, since few of my friends are into the hobby, and the ones that are into minis tend to be busy with life stuff, but these days my online friends have become the people I interact with the most. It may sound dumb but just having someone who understands the complexities of a paint job there to say "hey man, that looks dope" is a huge motivator for me... I'm so needy lol.

Several years ago, I moved from Seattle to the rural midwest. In Seattle, I was in a few clubs, attended regular meetings with other modelers and painters, and was kept motivated by the various projects we all worked on together. Here in the sticks, there's none of that -- if I want to join a club or shop in a model or game store, I need to drive 3-4 hours round trip.
For obvious reasons, face to face meetings have been off limits for everyone. My Seattle friends were just as disconnected as I was, so they setup regular Zoom meetings to keep connected. This granted me a reprieve from my flyover state exile -- the internet means it doesn't matter where I am, I can always join one of several weekly meetings. We even have people joining while they are traveling, on vacation, heading to the doctor, etc.
So I'm with you -- the importance of these connections cannot be overstated. I miss the face to face meetings a lot, gathering around a table and filling it with paints and tools and plastic and snacks and jokes and laughter. Online, the table is smaller, and I have to buy my own snacks, but the rest of it is still there, and as long as I'm stuck here, I won't give it up without a fight.

This is the video I've been waiting to watch since I saw maniacs one and tabletop minions. I got into the miniature painting hobby by accident after starting back in airfix kits four years ago this July, mate gave me a kit to help fight depression which I suffer from and was self harming , before I was diagnosed and giving the happy pills. Your videos and the guys have helped me grow and now I've got an airbrush, something I never thought I'd buy let alone use, I live alone and get support online from other hobby groups.

This is such truth. Last year I got a craft shed, which meant I finally had a place to invite a friend for hobby session. And that changed everything. The amount of painting I did in last ten month is unbelievable to me. I never knew I was capable of such productivity. And the only thing that really changed was that I had a friend come over once a week. And it was not just paint session days - I really wanted some progress to show by next session too, which made me find time on working days to do something to show on Sunday. The best painting hack ever 😁

Recently had an old High School friend move back to the area after being off in other states for well over a decade, so I hosted a miniature paint day as an excuse to get the old HS crew together (+ some SOs & friends) to catch up. Most attendees were complete noobs to mini painting, but they all had a blast painting up some weird minis we got in a bundle off Amazon. We plan to do another one in the future since it went over so well. There were not many quality paint jobs that day, but there was lots of laughs and good banter.
As someone who struggles to find the motivation to paint instead of doing any of the other activities that compete for my attention, I love hosting a group paint jam since it forces me to take that time to paint! No excuses, no being lazy, I will be painting! Also, when you paint with a group, even if just a couple others, it just creates a ton of positivity around the table. It's easy to get distracted by flaws in your paint job or your level of skill, but then someone goes "That looks awesome!!!", or one of your friends decides to paint a tiger in the style of a 90s Dixie cup, and it reminds you that painting should mainly be about having fun with your hobby, not stressing over imperfections.

    • @khanoclast
      @khanoclast ปีที่แล้ว +1

We have a meeting in Seattle we call TNI, which stands for the Thursday Night Irregulars. Every Thursday evening, someone hosts whoever wants to come for a build and bull session. Sometimes you get twenty people, sometimes half a dozen, hence the "irregulars" part of it. Some folks show right at the start and stay until it's dark, some arrive after work and just sit and talk, others come and go as they can. Over the past few years, these sessions have gone online, and expanded to Monday and Wednesday as well, so more folks can join.
As a cat owner, I've found the best way to herd cats is to setup a space with food, and put food there at the same time every day. The cats herd themselves.
So just pick a day and a time, put out the word (and some chips and fizzy sugar water) and see who shows up. Do it again next week. And again the week after that. And again the week after. And if you need to, make adjustments until you find a time and day that works for as many ~cats~ folks as you can get.

Ever since I started painting about 2 years ago, I've been DESPERATE for the chance to paint with other people. Every one of my friends has been asked if they'd want to come paint with me, and I feel like I'm the only one with any inclination towards it. I get so distracted from painting, and being able to sit and be social while enjoying the hobby would be so lovely.

Having someone to bounce ideas off of is so helpful. You can give each other ideas/feedback when something isn't working, or is working but needs tweaking. And just hanging out, and talking is also cool.

And if you live remote, and want to paint with people, offer mini painting classes at your local library. That's what I started doing with a starter pack of Army painter paints, a handful of tupperware wet pallets, cheap amazon brushes, and some 3D printed minis. Have 3-4 regulars for my first few, but hopefully it will pick up once the snow melts.

Technomancer, what is the light your guests are using? Would love to get one for my paint buddy's next hobby hang. This the kind of wholesome content we need. What a goody group of PPs. Long live Eggypt

Good idea, but for every 1 youtubber who is popular enough to have the sheer amount of friends to do something like this, there is like 5000 dudes out there, who don't exactly have the time or social skills to organize something like this. Sure, i have gaming buddies, but the extent of our social transaction is "Can you print out/paint this thing for me?"
HOWEVER, i didn't post this to piss on your parade. Not at all! I think this is an opportunity for someone like yourself to do the following: Create a non-Patreon-locked Discord channel. Promote the channel to your audience. Organize the Discord channel to sub-channels based on specific 'day of the week' and 'start time - end time'. Explain to users that these channels dictate the day of the week and time frame that all participants who join the channel, must be on voice chat to 'hang out' and chat while they are hobbying. From here, and after a few weeks, you can assign channel admins who control and manage the channel for the date/time that they are online. This would be for like your old fuddy-duddies (like myself), who will stick to the schedule and dedicate themselves to that date and time, every week.
Secondly, create a Facebook group so that this group of sub-admins can promote their sub-channel, in order to get more people to join up and hobby alongside.

my advice is to get a 3d printer - all the random weird stuff I've printed gave me tons of practice/cheap excuses to try stuff out

Great video, thank you! Just stumbled over your channel :)
What kind of lamps are you using there? They look exactly like what I am looking for for month. I have to travel a lot for work and something portable would be amazing :)
