57. Chameleon Micas with Different Color Resin

- I’ve been curious to see what happens when you use different colors of resins as the base underneath chameleon chrome mica. In this experiment, I use black, white, clear, and colored resin.

Tap the loose powder in the other molds ur using.

I’ve used different dark colors as backing because some items I just didn’t want a black back image. It works great, just like black. But I always did a medium to dark opaque. I think one reason for the dark/black is to disguise areas where the mica coverage is thinner than others. Thanks for the experiment! I like that you could use mica in the mix but, alas, that’s so expensive a way to use pricey powders. THANKS
Instead of dumping your excess powder in trash, tap it over the next mold as starter for next. That way only trashing one mold worth not 4.
Good idea! Although that would only work if you’re only using one color mica. I just did a project where I used several colors in specific spots, so that would have just made a mess lol.
So funny!!! I was wondering how white would look behind the chameleon colours just this morning. I ended up going with black. Fingers crossed it works out!! Lol!! It’s just in my curing machine as I write this!!

That mica is awesome! Just found you and subscribed. Just a thing I do is if I am putting the same mica in another mold rather than tap over the bin I tap over one of the other molds xxx

That is a beautiful color shift. Great experiment. Now I’m wondering what the results would be if you didn’t dust it but, just mixed in the mica. Thanks for doing that, especially using up all your color shift. Those lil bottles can be expensive.. I have been curious what that would look like.😊
I’m curious now too, so I’m sure I’ll try it at some point lol. I also want to see what would happen if I used different color resins. I do something similar when painting (underpainting) and it can create a very subtle effect. Idk if it would do the same with this technique.
why not save the mica powder that you shake out and mix them to make a new colour
Good idea! It’s pretty staticky from the mold, so it’s hard to collect neatly. But it’s something to try!
Hi, I still have a question: I painted a rose mould with red mica powder and poured black resin as a backround - the rose came out a dirty brown. The orange lilies turned to the same muddy brown with the black resin. The sparkling white lilies turned to gray. Irritating, and I still don't know of an alternative. I spend time choosing the specific colours and want them to stay that way. Can you help? Your video was very informative.
So regular colored mica will not give the same vibrant effect as chrome mica when you dry paint it onto the mold. It will always be semi transparent, so the color of the resin will have a major impact. White resin will give you lighter “pastel” versions of those colors, and clear resin will give you transparent results. There really is no way to do this kind of pour unless you’re using chrome mica powder. I would suggest buying some in your desired colors for the best effect.

Yep!
Seems expensive to mix in resin using more powder (plus you also dusted it) Where dusting the mold and using black gives same effect. Clear not liking... white seemed muted. To avoid floating powder I pour thin layer of the backing color let set up and then pour next filling layer and no floating dust. I don't sell so not in hurry to get done..unless last minute gift. For sure! I won’t be using the mica to color the resin again - I wanted to see if it would matter. Maybe if you want the back to match I guess lol. On something opaque like this, I would usually put a backing so the floating mica wouldn’t be visible, either more resin like you said or a cork bottom. Thanks for your feedback!
@The Pour House Resin Classes w/ Tiften Studio I am confused as to why you even dusted the mold first. Wouldn't it make more sense to mix the mica into clear resin. Assuming the goal is to see how it would look? Otherwise I'm back to scratching my head wondering what the purpose of that part of the experiment was. 🤨🤔🤦🏼♀️
You use much less mica when you dust the mold first. The chameleon powders are pricey. And you can use multiple colors to create neat effects you can’t create by just pouring. Check this out: th-cam.com/video/YWGhu1ueqZQ/w-d-xo.html
@The Pour House Resin Classes w/ Tiften Studio Yes, I understand that. What confused me was that you dusted the mold as well as added the chameleon powder to the black resin. I thought the experiment was to see what it would look like when you A.) Dusted the mold with chameleon powder. B.) Mixed Chameleon powder into black resin before you poored it, and C.) Mixed chameleon powder into clear resin on its own.
Instead, you dusted and added it, which is what confused me. Maybe I misunderstood you when you explained the purpose of this experiment. Idk. The point is, mixing chameleon powder into black resin and pooring it into a mold you already dusted with the chameleon powder seems pointless to mw unless the goal was to see if you could double up on the chameleon effect because otherwise it's nearly impossible to discern a difference when you dust the mold as well as adding it to black resin. It kind of defeats the purpose, I thought but maybe I'm wrong. 🤷🏼♀️
I was trying to see if it would be more brilliant. And this was an experiment because I didn’t know. Just because I’m doing something that later is proven pointless doesn’t mean I knew that when I did it. That was the whole reason for the experiment.
