In my 55 gal I made a forest of "trees" with different sizes of cholla wood with crypts growing out the tops. They do so well and are huge now, looks almost like palm trees. With the large quartz tips in the hardscape, it gives it a surreal fantasy vibe and the fish love swimming through the forest!
@FishShopMatt I was really surprised at how well the crypt does, I used that kinda brown/green crinkly type (wendtii or spiralis maybe?), but with crypt you have so many options of sizes and colors, you could really go nuts. Maybe that tiger spiralis, that stuff is cooool!
I literally was thinking about doing that exact thing the other day! Cholla wood and crypts on top to make little palm trees. You should post a video of your tank and show it off
So glad you added the little grass tufts. It definitely made the scape more cohesive. The balance still feels off a smidgen... Needs a small point of interest on the right-hand side. Love this moss tree, though!
Add yellow, orange or red cherry shrimp would add color to the tree as they grazed on the moss, like fruit hanging on a tree. Plus they would help with the algae. Like the the scape simple and not expensive. They do have wood that shaoed like a bonsai tree you could buy.
I absolutely love this. I'm about to set up a tank that is a very similar size. I might be stealing this idea ❤😂. Keep up the good work. I hope to see you and MD do something together soon, I love seeing you guys work together.
beautiful Matt, grass was truly needed😊 what about 3 of the same but smaller rocks in the near corner with a little of that grass to complete the cohesiveness of the look...
This seriously made me miss my bonsai tank, and miss my fish even more. I made mine out of moss balls using a stock tree I got from someone off Facebook lol. It looked awesome, though, and I was so proud of it. Maybe someday I’ll be able to get back into the hobby, just not right now, sadly.
🎉 I really like that scape. I have to break down my 29 gallon tank and fix my mistakes on my first ever planted tank 😂 it's going to be a lot more simple, I think, with more swim space. This one gave me ideas
I'm only 2 min in and had to pause! I'm so excited you worked with Kaity I missed that video! And this is the video I've been waiting for! I now understand why after 6 months MD does a make over on his tanks, mine is looking crusty although thanks to you everyone's still alive! Tank 2.0 will be an underwater bonsai for sure! Thanks again Matt! The way you showed the actual constriction was amazing! Thank you! Thank you!
Was nice to see something different, but still love your more natural scapes the most! Like you say, the fish are happier with more to hide etc! Very clever use of the branches and then the moss for the canopy! I’ve had an issue with my moss … it’s almost all died, I think lack of light maybe? 🤔
Matt hats off to you, this video is absolutely epic, this is up there with all your pond videos I’ve loved, I was abit negative/critical at the start of your channel but your going from strength to strength and all the videos are just getting better and better am so glad I was 100% wrong with my opinion 👌👏👏👍
That means a huge amount to hear! Thank you so so much! It's all a learning curve and what with me being thrust into the limelight so quickly the learning curve was fast and steep. It's great to hear this comment!
You are right that this is an aesthetic aquascape and it looks great. I have just finished breeding some Endler Guppies and now have two 25 litre tanks free. I am going to create my own bonsai scape in one of them.
This scape is wonderful, and the cherry barbs are perfect for it! Something that would also make a cool bonsai tree would be to use plants that would hang down from the branches to give a willow-like appearance. Nano fish swimming through the hanging "branches" would be like birds flying through the tree. Keep up the great work on your channel. It's one of my favorites.
Last year's ANAC contest's theme was tree aquascapes and I took photo's of them all and there are so many different plants you can basically use as epiphytes to make the tree leaves. One of these is still put on show at Diebo in Nieuwegein. Lovely!
Cherry barbs are great. Very curious and greedy. I have them in a tank with Khuli loaches, dwarf frogs, zebra danios and shrimp. It's like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
Hi Matt! I really enjoy your videos. You make fish keeping seem obtainable to everybody. A small video idea spurred on by this video. Maybe a video on how to propagate the java moss. Or maybe one on how to propagate common aquarium plants in general. I have a question for you. In your filter video a little while ago, in the second tank that had the in tank filter, you had a house plant in the top of that tank. What kind of plant was that? Thanks.
It feels like a tribute to Filipe Oliveira.. the inventor of the tree scape. Unfortunately he passed away😢 it was a very characteristic funny man. Thank you for this nice video matt🙏
Good job, Matt!! I would like to see one done with Monte Carlo. It should create a trailing canopy and have a Cherry tree/Willow tree effect. I once made one with tiny twigs on a small Seiryu stone which had grooves in it for twig roots. Glued mesh from a shower poof to the branches and didn't have any plants so used moss from the backyard for the canopy (which I didn't really like). The tree itself was only about 4 inches high. It worked good until hubby took my aquarium and had no place to put it, so it died. Phoenix Moss (Fissidens Fontanus) is my dream moss to own, not available here. A moss wholesaler in France has a gorgeous trailing moss (Fontinalis Squamosa) which would really look like a Willow tree. Course it is definitely not available in the US. I seriously want something that trails so the fish can swim thru it. I hate Java moss.. it looks messy. But all mosses are too expensive... that's why I thought maybe a vitro cup of Monte Carlo could be grown out a bit then attached to a tree? Do you think it would work? Shirley in NH
Yeah, I think that's a really cool idea with the Monte Carlo. I don't see why it wouldn't work. You could even use multiple small pots on the ends of branches and filled with aqua soil. I definitely think it's worth a go.
I love the scape. Its minimal and looks great! How do you keep your sand from forming brown algae? Every time I use sand in a scape the brown algae takes over.
Absolutely fantastic Matt, doing my first Aquascape soon, so looking forward to doing it, you have so inspired me for your great ideas, can you tell me one thing...is it ok to use rock? Just heard too many stories about rock being bad for your water/ph, great video as always 👍
Hi Matt, great channel and video! I am about to setup my first aquascape using a secondhand Superfish 65 Home tank. Love the bonsai tree approach, and got me thinking I would enjoy a Japanese style aquascape. Is there any plant, or moss which would give that cherry blossom 🌸🌸 feel to it? Thinking further ahead, maybe a bamboo theme in there as well 🤔
Good choice of fish. I was wondering if there's something like 'micro goldfish', as they would perfectly fit in the. bonzai setting. Never seen anything like that though :-(. Edit: maybe a bit more rocks near the back to create tiny caves will give the fish more places to hide too.
I was tempted by rice fish but once I saw the cherries that was it. I'm tempted to add a smaller tree on the right on a smaller island but that will be for another day.
Love the rock work, until the scatter gravel hits, not a big fan of this in most scapes. I wonder if crushing the stone you used for the scape would look more chipped/natural. Thanks for the videos, they are always well done.
Can you make a video showing how to change an aquariums aquascape when you only have one tank and don’t know what to do with the fish whilst changing the aquascape 🙏🏻
Hi m8 what is your recommendation for storing mature plant I want to store cuttings for another scape that is not ready yet, the tanks they are coming from are in a desperate need of a trim or rescape enjoying the channel
Hi, great video. I’m starting my first tank, would this require more maintenance due to only sand being used? Would the tree require lots of maintenance ? Also I have a forest near me, could I use the moss and driftwood found there (will wash it before going in tank) or does it have to be a certain type?
I've been wanting to make a bonsai tree for awhile. I have been growing moss lately, without the algae issues I was having last year. I suppose a new set up with a dirted substrate releases lots of nutrients. Anyway, I think I am ready for a project like this. It looks so cool.
I’ve tried a few of these over the years but they have all become a victim of hair algae, even when there is none anywhere else. Any tips to avoid it? ❤🇦🇺
hey matt. nice aquascaping but something is missing in this tank. bonsai theme without betta is useless. Please add betta in it and then share video with us :)

I had some thoughts about a similar thing with a palm tree style setup. Maybe I'll give it a go, the cholla wood idea sounds amazing!

Yeah I agree a cool group of cherry shrimp are a must in here!
Nice that you think of your viewers for give aways unlike many TH-camrs and give a community feeling to the hobby
Awwwww thank you! My goal is to promote fishkeeping and the hobby and whatever way I can do it I will!
I am going to copy this stone for stone moss for moss😂😂😂. This is a great scape brother

Cute tank looks good. Perhaps some mini val in the open areas would look nice
Glue! Hack! Chop! Looks like fun!
As long as it doesn't get on your hands it's fine hahaha
Great tank! I always expect corydoras to be in these bonsai tanks for some reason
They would look cool in here, maybe I'll hunt a cool little group out.

Glad you put the grasses in , it looked great b4 but it just added another dimension after. Genius matey ❤
Totally agree, it was only when I sat there that it just didn't feel finished.

Really cool scape! I love the rock work leading up to the base of the tree. Great job!
Thank you very much! I'm happy with how it came out.
Would love to see you do more creative scapes like this! Nature-style scapes are nice but I love seeing something different
That's amazing to hear, there are definitely some more in the pipeline.
Omg I want a pull out secret shelf !
🎉 I really like that scape. I have to break down my 29 gallon tank and fix my mistakes on my first ever planted tank 😂 it's going to be a lot more simple, I think, with more swim space. This one gave me ideas
wood working biscuits work great for this application also
Yes I have seen them used, I didn't know what wood would be safe so steered clear. Maybe I'll do a bit more research.
I really enjoy your videos and scaping!!

WOOHOOO Bonsai Tree build !!! I've been looking forward to this one. And I was NOT disappointed !!!
So so glad you liked it! Thank you!
The grass added so much! I love it!
Fantastic it’s beautiful
Promise of hacking and gluing - I'm sold! 😃

That tank turned out awesome
Looks great Matt 💚🌿💚
Thank you! Cheers!
Makes me want to try this. Thank you for the affordable version. 😊
This is more along the lines of Boulder Creek Railroad model train diorama videos. Perfect!
How coincidental that I ordered Lemon Tetra and Cherry barb on the weekend, and now I see a video where you mention both (and get Cherry!)
This exactly what kind of scape I've been researching for my new tank! Thank you Matt! 😃

Love that look. Less is definitely more 🐠
I think so too! Sometimes it's easy to get overcomplicated.

Glad you enjoyed
Really nice scaping and very different. Giving me some ideas as I have been falling into a rut with the same design.
Great to hear! It's always fun to change it up and push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Awsome simple design.......love it.

One of my fave videos Matt. I’m inspired
Matt, I used Driftwood shavings and glued it together to build the canopy, It's a bit tedious, But outcome makes it all worth it.
That's a cool idea!
So good. I love this. ❤❤❤
