In Deep Water Culture (DWC) the water ph needs to be within the ranges of 5.5 to 6.5 and 5.8 will be the most optimal. The PH doesn't always stay at 5.8 though, it can drift, swing, fluctuate on a daily basis or it can literally change immediately. In the past i always chased my PH and adjust it to make sure it stayed at 5.8 but sometimes this can be tedious with having to raise or lower the PH multiple times a day in my hydroponic system. I stopped adjusting my PH and just let the plants do what the plants do. Ever since i have not had to adjust my PH or even check it because my plants remain looking healthy. You want to make sure that you stay within those range still so you may have to adjust occasionally but as long as your in range just leave it be. If your PH rises too high or goes too low then that could be a sign that something isnt right in your reservoir and it could be due to a nutrient imbalance or some sort of additive. you can try leaving the ph alone whether it rises or drops and see if it stabilizes after a couple of days. common questions in Deep Water Culture Hydroponics relating to PH levels. Do air stones affect PH? why is PH rising? why is ph dropping?

I start with 5.5 and let it rise to 6.8. While keeping an eye on 6.8 because the plant won’t absorb if ph is to high so when that happens I re-adjust to 5.5 but advanced nutrients doesn’t require constant ph adjustment

I read about this..the fluctuation is actually good for the plants. As you know, certain elements are able to be absorbed by the plant at different ph levels. The flux allows your plants to get the full spectrum available to it. 5.8 is just the level where most elemental absorption happens. Great video as always Dusa.
Edit: if I had watched the video all the way through...Dusa states this ✊🏼

Crap grows in the water. Infections... root rot... etc are a product of not lowering your ph... some tips to keep in mind.
      1. Ph your water BEFORE ADDING NUTRIENTS. Wait two hours after adding nutrients, re ph down to desired level. And check ph once a day.
      2. Do not use lemon or vinegar as su statutes for ph down. This is only good for a temporary solution until you get real ph down solution.
Real ph down solution has something called a buffer, which holds the ph down. Lemon and vinegar do the opposite of buffer. Happy gardening.

My yields have tripled since i started to pH. So long as it is in a range that's one thing. Advising not to pH is not very good advice since you have no idea where someone's pH was to start with.

That’s why I said some people are going to have to adjust if it gets out of range. And that’s dope that yours tripled! But the comments are proof that a lot of people have also been doing this and having success. Nothing is going to work for everyone though

If you use distilled water and PH Balanced nutrients. Why mess with something that is not needed?
Now city water. You might need to adjust the PH.
You can take it a step further find a water filtration system that makes the PH the level you want.
Like Zerowater filtration system. Run any water through it it cleans up your water makes the PH of 0.
Then add your nutes and check the PH and see where it's at.

I don't really ph unless it's a seedling, after they start growing I leave it be and just occasionally monitor it, never really made a difference, had some yellowing, my ro water is at 6 out the sink, I don't even measure my nutes and Calmag, just feed some tablespoons every water change, managed a qp my first auto grow off one plant, it's not as serious as people make it out to be, you end up just stressing yourself out spending hours watching leaves grow. Eventually you grow extremely tired of trying to chase perfect. People say dwc is hard, it's not it's very very easy, soil is what is hard, you legit have to be there nursing it everyday if not it dies, I've left my dwc for a week, came back it grew and was normal with nothing wrong.. do that with soil and you come back to a dried out plant if your using high temp lights.

@@neilsunstrum933 your ph will not fluctuate much if you are feeding the amount of nutrients the plant is taking up. if you are light with the fertilizer then the plant will suck up most of the nutrients in the solution then your ph will rise significantly, not because of bacteria growing in the pail or nothing like that it’s just that the plant is sucking up all the nutrients making the ph rise.

at 5.8 are some things not good avlible u should go for 5.5ph and 6.0-6.2 for later flower.just around 5.8 are the sweat spots. Btw there are some nutrients that are very ph stabile but even with perfect nutrients i got serious problems if the envorment is off. The envoirment can couse bad metabolism and that influence the nutrient uptake. Sine the nutrient uptake is differnt from what the nutrient producer expected the ph will fall or rise in a matter of hour some times. I learned this by exident with some vegetebles. Befor i was growing under 100% perfect conditions and never got this problem. I am glad that i tryed some differnt things. The goal was to use a very low amount of energy. The experiment failed :D

keeping the ph in the range from 5.5-6.5 keeps the plant absorbing the maximum amount of nutrients it can. if you let it get out if that range, sure your plants will still look good but they won’t grow as fast. It all depends on how dedicated you are to your grow. There is an old saying that is as good as the day it was first said “ You get out what you put into it!” You can use gasoline in your car that’s been sitting for years and it will still run but the octane in it will be very low and the performance will reflect your choice if fuels. if you run premium gas with 94 octane it will run better and the performance will be much better too. Enough said!

C02 injection can also make even bigger swings with PH. Most people with planted aquariums would already know PH drops at night in general and when you add C02 injection that PH drop is even larger so id expect DWC would be the same. Between my Aquariums, Aquaponics and Hydroponics systems I only change the PH of what I'm adding to the existing mix or fresh fill's ;) Morning reading of 5.9 would swing to around 6.2 by late afternoon with a low of 5.6 lights out (NO C02 injection) expect more change with tank C02 ;).. Never used the trash c02 bags so unsure if they would effect much compared to regulated tank injection which does more the more C02 gets into the water from gas exchange during water agitation. Added edit = info on high tech planet Aquariums can show you so much about water and what PH changes to expect with x=amount C02. Once you get your head around it you can closely predict the change via amount of C02 in the water column.

You might have bicarbonate in your water. Carbonic acid-bicarbonate buffer’s around that pH and when you lower pH, over time, as the carbonic acid becomes water and carbon dioxide, bicarbonate will push the system back up to the buffer equilibrium at pH 7.5.
If that is the reason then the solution might be a stronger, di/triprotic, inorganic acid or a different water source.

Next day at like 11 and the ph raised up a bit again to 7 after being adjusted down to 6.5, so brought it back down. Gonna be checking like mad over next few days

Maybe can get some advice from ya ? I went and set the buckets up again in a different room so I can sleep lol now PH ! Ye my ph is rising I’m using a ppm of 400ppm advanced nutes perfect ph technologies the whole schedule, I’m using x2 buckets half full they hold ten litres with abt 2-3 inches space from the net pot to the water surface full they hold 20 but the water will b half way up the net pot ! So I’m using ten litres per bucket per plant the ph is drifting from 5.5 I set it at as I know it drifts up 48 hrs later ph is at 6.8-7.4 plants look fine and healthy there just new cuttings two weeks into there veg cycle roots are white and then brown under the water not root rot it’s nuts stain temps are lo with plenty air flow does that soy d ok should I chase my ph if it’s at 7 + and the plants are healthy ???

pH swings indicate an imbalance between the uptake of anions and cations in your nutrients. Without a stable pH, your EC readings are useless. You are basically running blind, not knowing if your nutrients are the correct ratio or concentration.
The plants tell you what to feed them by changing the pH and EC. Knowing how to read these changes helps dial in your setup and boosts yields and quality.
I usually get 2g per watt with a good yielding strain.

@@DusaFarms Canna is great and holds quiet a stable PH BUT like anything more C02 in the water column will create a higher swing in PH between Day/Night cycle. Something I only watch for when running planted Aquariums with tank C02 injection since sure the fish may not mind the higher C02 in the water column for the plants BUT some may die after a few weeks due to the stress of the higher PH swings... Most plants/fish have no problem with the swing of PH from day/night cycle since its just nature.

Monitor throughout week to ensure it stays within 5.5-6.5.

Also your plants inndwc dont eat food in all up in one week like u think your plants can actually go two weeks or longer before u need to change the food... plants only eat what they need so feeding it every week for no reason jusy to make sure u have strong solution whichbis really all your doing in veg.... until its really eating and drinking i n flower. I let a oreoz strain go dwc a 3 weeks to almost 4 weeks. Outdoor dwc started right beneath barely touching the pot... withbdyno grow... as an experiment so its not sceincetificlly proven 😂.. just something i did ounce and noticed that u can do and i saves on food and money...did the same in bloom .. just let it eattill the water got low low.. and it was fire... .. so if theres issues i could have had doin that please feel free to educate me ..❤
