Sawhorse Revolution is a youth-oriented construction program currently focusing on building an eco-village at Nickelsville, a homeless encampment in Seattle, Washington. Sarah Smith and a team of high schoolers approach the residents of Nickelsville as their clients to deliver customized, hand-built homes to help ease the transition from homelessness to the next stage of the resident's life.

They're just bedrooms not self contained homes. Washing, toilet and kitchen facilities are shared.

I agree but it's setting a precedent for us all to live like this but not in separate buildings but apartment blocks. Either sharing bathrooms and kitchens or tiny kitchenettes and shower rooms inside small studio apartments.
And it's great for the teenagers too. A lot of people don't choose to be homeless, due to sicknesses etc. What the teenagers are doing is caring, and also learning at the same time. There should be more places like this around the world. Maybe the teenagers would have something to do other then getting caught up in the wrong crowds. Whoever taught of this, this is a wonderful idea. On helping people get back on there feet. And helping people know there never alone.

Yes I love this as well. I think the builders can enjoy this as well as the dwellers. Because the size of these homes are small so you don't feel much burden building them. Also,doesn't seem like the building needs any advanced carpentry skills or electriciy. and if it's basic,students and young people can easily learn while being productive. And cleaning is also easy if you are a dweller because living space is small. The place won't take hours to clean. I just like the Idea.

That's the part people are not getting. Making them a nice box to sleep in is a waste unless they also have a space (that is theirs) to keep it. Homeless people don't need the box, they need to 'own' a place to keep it.
Here in Spain we have 3 million empty houses (bubble, you know). They are owned by banks and greedy investors. There are 40.000 homeless people in Spain. I guess the solution is simple...

It happened to me too. It happens so much more than you think. When you lose your health you can lose everything especially if you don't have a family who gives a hoot. Many people are just a paycheck away from homelessness

@@1953beetle I'm grateful that we have universal healthcare here in Australia, but being chronically ill and unable to work has meant I've lost almost everything, newstart isn't enough to survive on and if it wasn't for the coronavirus supplement I would be struggling to keep my house.
Although I don't feel that this will solve the homelessness in the US completely, since there are still a large portion of the homeless that are due to extreme mental illness and/or drug abuse, I think this is a great step forward.
The question is who's going to pay for it, who's going to make sure it's done properly, so far the government doesn't ignore the mentally ill they just lock them up in prison because it's cheaper then proper care, what about those who can't get better or are so deep into their mental illness that they'll always be a constant threat to themselves or others?

Me too my children and I lost husband/ dad been dealing with house fire losing everything and being scared and on off homelessness I just want to own a home before I go so I can rest assure they will be good and never experience homelessness ever again

Morons. It's not about YOU feeling good. It's about solving homelessness. And feel-good things generally enable homelessness. Curing it is boring and not emotionally satisfying. But that's what we need to do, with real policies that institutionalize the mentally ill and expand business so jobs are more available. Not exciting, no. Doesn't give you emotional pleasure, no. But it's the answer.

Kube Dog. There can be two types of selfless ppl. The type that give to feel better and less selfish and the type that give in a different way to actually solve the problems. There's no need to talk shit to someone who wants to do be the first type. Spend your energy turning that person into the 2nd type or turning selfish pricks into either of the 2 types I mentioned.
I appreciate you trying to take it seriously and see the good in the first type. You're wrong, because the first type ends up, usually, making the problem worse because they don't think it through and end up giving to a person or group that actually makes the problem worse (or at minimum enables the problem to continue). So, they are not "doing less good, but at least some good." No. They are enabling a problem (suffering) to continue. It's like if they want to feel better about a poor homeless man on the street and give him $10. Now they feel better about themselves, and since that's all they want they didn't think it through. The homeless man may just buy alcohol or drugs to enable another day of homelessness. So, has any good been done? I don't think so, because the problem has been enabled to continue. The person who wanted to feel better about themselves actually did harm. You must want to solve the problem. If you do, you will feel deeply good about yourself afterwards, but you can't go into it looking for that. You need to want to solve the problem.

These programs are great. They bring a sense of pride and accomplishment to participants and they also build relationships between groups of different ages. I really appreciate these folks in Seattle sharing this. The more we all do for each other, the more we all benefit. Love to see this sort of thing in UK where we have a huge housing problem.

In the USA, we have more abandoned homes than homeless people. We don't need more homes, we need to preserve those we already have.
Thanks god somebody knows it. Poverty is a political and psychological problem. We can largely provide basic needs to everybody in the OCDE.

+Alvin Tossler Extremely large, long-term and elaborate infrastructure like Cabrini-Green? Sounds like the problem is government red tape, not infrastructure.
The reason the homes are abandoned is the communities are abandoned. There are no economic opportunities in these locations. Therefor no reason for anyone to move into these abandoned homes. Th homeless need jobs.
What a wonderful idea for helping others who would other wise have to stay in a shelter or even the streets! I love seeing this kind of story. Such a breath of fresh air from all the negative news and videos out there.

What is wrong with American society that getting sick can lead you to ending up on the streets. I know socialism is a dirty word in the US but come on, have some kind of safety net for people.
Even if you're having a heart attack, if you don't have health insurance, the hospital won't give any medical assistance whatsoever, they just care about the money, even going to a doctor in America can cost over $200! That's why.
Socialism makes MORE people poor and homeless. The best way out of poverty is a job.
I live in Greece and, despite economic crisis and severe austerity measures, we still enjoy some basic benefits. Nobody gets kicked off from our hospitals, no matter what. Because they're public hospitals, not private ones.
Plus, we provide shelter and health care to over 60,000 refugees at the moment (when bankrupt Greece's population is just 11,000,000).
So I don't buy it, that the US government can't do anything for the homeless people. If all US citizen's taxes (which I believe are quite high) don't go for minimum public goods, then where do they go?

This is so pleasing to hear. I was homeless with my two kids. I lived temporarily in a hotel not a good one, we rose above that and we are on housing now here in Indiana. In 5/6 mos I plan to have the trailer I put money down on paid off and I will begin to build my tiny home. I am now raising my grandbaby. I've had her since she was 8 days old with no help from her parents. I can't wait to begin my Tiny Home. You are doing a wonderful job and I'm excited about what you are doing for them.
This is amazing!! Thank you guys SO MUCH for doing this!! There are so many rich people out there who really could help do something to help others. Not just donating to charities but actually DO SOMETHING to help. And they don't, they spend money on new cars, 300,000 dollar homes and everything. It just makes me sick that people who would actually help never get enough money to help and people who are stingy win all kinds of money. Like wow omg!!!
Yes it can help, I currently stay in a homeless village in Scotland and it has helped me so much.
Even adding solar panels and back up electric generators is also a must.

Yes, you can turn shipping containers into low income housing. There are so many empty containers sitting across the country, and wouldn't cost much to refurbish them.
As an older disabled lady who has experienced homelessness, I thank you for this wonderful solution! Every state should have a Sawhorse Project. I rent a room, which is my current temporary solution to my seemingly permanent housing problem. Having a tiny house would fulfill my dream & present a true solution. Bravo to you!

It's about time they did something like this in the UK. ..ok they've made experimental 10x10x10 cube houses but they are not aimed at homeless people and it's something that is needed desperately. .I'd be willing to help build and I am sure lpts of others would too.

The concept of tiny homes is really great. Certainly it does not solve all problems that come along with homelessness but it helps. I hoe this project can go on and expand to help more people. Great job!!
Tears!! God bless you! I'm glad that homelessness is being brought to a positive light. Praying for everyone to see the truth. Many people can downsize and give in America. There shouldn't be such a struggle to survive if you are just simply falling through the cracks. I happened to fall through the cracks with my daughter and went through hell trying to get back up again after a divorce. We have a testimony in the works and are still praying for a home of our own. I've never used drugs...and it's those women with children who are overlooked and thrown into poverty. My husband didn't care about anything but himself and his lustful desires. God sees every hurt and tear shed. Praying and stay ENCOURAGED!!! Bless them ALL LORD!!

Now if only people flocked to do things such as this instead of flocking to sightings of rare pokemon for Pokemon Go, the world would be a better, more self sufficient, more efficient, and more caring place. Though I have a question. Do the people living in Nickelsville get to learn how to build the houses and help in building them? I believe that would be a great benefit to them as well. Hopefully they would learn to build houses themselves and would then help in the building of houses for other homeless people, passing on the knowledge and helping people as they were helped.

Though I have helped out in other ways such as cleaning homes and yards and clearing them of junk and potentially harmful things (such as broken glass) free of charge to get them ready for others to live in around my neighbourhood. I have also donated many things such as clothes, electronics, and food to those who are less fortunate. Also please do not jump to conclusions. I did not say I was better than anyone nor am I attacking people that play Pokemon Go. I actually did not even mention myself. Though we have to be honest. BuckGreywolfe I am not exactly sure what point you believe that Emma Boland made in your favor, but I do not think she mentioned anything about the quality of houses for the homeless. She had simply misunderstood my comment and thought I believed that I felt I was better than people that played Pokemon Go, which I do not believe that to be the case. I was merely saying that things such as this are more productive and that I wished that more people would flock to and get involved with things such as this than with trends like games or Internet challenges.

What an absolute brilliant idea. To a lot of people, homelessness are people with substance abuse and/or drinking issues, but it's more than that. Homeless people aren't throw-away people but more so fragile people who have been through a lot and need our love, compassion and understanding to rebuild their lives and have the same chance in life as everybody else. People who have it are so selfish and arrogant, and they don't realise how fragile the balance is and could easily loss it all in a blink of an eye. And the bit that frustrates me about those who have it all, they think that the homeless, hobo, tramp etc are a completely different species to who they are, guess what, they're NOT! Donating to charities once a year is all fine, but how about showing charity to those who are less fortunate, i.e. Give someone on the street a bag of clean clothes you don't wear anymore, or a cup of tea with sandwiches, even a bar of chocolate etc. Anyway with those little villages, as well as having somewhere safe and warm to live, they will be given a sense of community and belonging to a family with people who knows where they are coming from. Two broken souls together can mend and eventually become two happy and healthy souls. Remember we weren't born broken, negative circumstances and abuse beyond our control will break your a person's spirit, but with love, compassion and understanding from others, we can be mended. And it's proven facts that when someone with an addictive personality is given something to live for and surrounded by love and support, the drugs, alcohol that was their crutch to coping with life will become less important to them as the confidence within them grow. All they want is for someone to not judge them but to listen, treat them like a human being and be a friend, and most importantly and obviously what this project is giving to them, something worthwhile to live for.

wish that my daughter and I had one of these last summer... can't survive in Texas in a car in the summer, we went to Colorado and stayed out an old logging road, in a four man tent..... One of the best summers of my life... but this shelter would of kept the raccoons from destroying our much needed shelter in the end.... being homeless isnt fun, these would make the basic worries of survival much easier to take....❤

I like the idea of providing work experience for High School students, and a place to call "home" for the homeless people! Tiny homes are being considered in Canada, but not in the same way that it is in the U.S. I think Canada should seriously think of building tiny homes like these, and creating communities like this one! We have so many homeless people, it just makes me cry! Betteridge's Law of Headlines. no, tiny houses won't assist getting people out of homelessness, in fact, it'll actually disvantage those homeless people because of the difficulty in moving on from places that have no insulation, running water, electricity or sewerage connections, and where they might be victimised by local dickheads who smash their stuff up. when you're homeless, you really REALLY don't want other people to know where you sleep - it's just too dangerous. these people are building a slum and expecting people to thank them for it.
But what's the alternative that doesn't put them in the exact situation you're describing? They still experienced all those things without a shelter, but now at least they have a place to safely sleep and protect their belongings when they try to look for work. I mean, I personally support the concept of Housing First, but the majority of states go so far as to criminalize things that people simply have to do (like sleep). I understand your criticism, but what other option doesn't put these people back in the same shitty situation with all the same shitty baggage as before? We shouldn't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Besides, it looks like they're working with a local high school shop class. I've been so pissed as I see schools cut funding to life classes, when they could do something cheaply and with utility and provide a meaningful experience. Anyway, that's my view, we could do lightyears better for these people, but at least they're doing something constructive

Right, I said I support housing first too, but the vast majority of people don't (and our representatives too, which is ultimately more important). Even though trial programs in a couple towns have been very successful, we are still in the vast minority and there's no political will behind the concept. So now that housing first is not a realistic option, what is the alternative?
And they have a key to these tiny homes so they they *can* lock up their belongings. How would these homes restrict them more now than when they didn't have a shelter? All of the issues that prevent people living on the streets from getting a job are *still there* if you take away these shelters. I'm not saying these shelters are good per se, but they prevent some of the bad that comes along when you don't have a home.
because the homes themselves would then also become part of the homeless peoples' belongings, and if left unguarded might be vandalised or broken in to or burned down or otherwise destroyed. it's not like they're real houses, you know? they just create MORE problems for homeless people. they don't prevent any. they don't stop homeless people from freezing in winter, and they don't stop them from heat exhaustion and stroke in summer. there's no heating and no air-conditioning, remember?
what they do is as follows - they tie those homeless people to places that are out-of-sight-out-of-mind to most other people, and you expect to be THANKED for that? their problems don't go away, they just get swept under the rug, and seeing shit like this lets people like *you* think that you're justified in ignoring the fact that humanity is self-destructing in your own backyard but that's okay because it's not happening to *you*.
the other thing is, they have NO SERVICES ATTACHED. no electricity, no water, no gas, no sewerage, no internet. they are LITERAL SLUM HOUSES that are put in places where the police don't go unless it's to harass the homeless people anyway.
these people are creating third-world areas inside America, and you're PROUD of that? and expect to be THANKED? get fucked.

nope it is gone unfortunately--I always thought that it was a great use for the land there--for those who don't know, this was a piece of land in the middle of downtown waste pretty much between a freeway offramp and industrial complexes like a giant goodwill down the street. Pity they got rid of it, especially since they are kicking out more people from "the Jungle" where those hundreds of people will go is a question mark.

Because most of them are slimy criminal pigs. They need to clean up their own minds and attitudes, and until they do that, they will just get brushed from one dark corner to the next. And the mentally ill need to be put in a public facility. Or they can live in your back yard, douche bags, and there's nothing stopping you from adopting a homeless person TODAY if that's what you think should happen. But no, you would rather them live in my back yard, I'm sure, and then cry happy tears over what a good person YOU are.
