- There is always a debate going on about the best player in each position, for various teams. We will be looking at some of the best players for the Springboks in each position, and we start by taking a look at some of the best flyhalves in Springbok history!

All of the old guard I've spoken to, even those who didnt fancy Rugby too much, said that Naas was an absolute genius. They would say he was critised for always being clean but then counter it by saying he was just that good at reading the game that always evaded everyone. It was like he had a telepathic relationship with the ball. He was before my time, but when enough people tell you a similar thing, he must have been some player!
He was! A player ahead of his time.
i never liked Naas, lol, but he was brilliant, he made the team, wonder if he wasnt the best fly-half ever,

Our family is from Durban so when Naas had a blue jersey my dad moaned all the time about Naas saying he is kak BUT in a Bok jersey he would tell me what a genius he was hahahahaha 😂
What a shame Naas Botha didn't have the chance to shine in international rugby... I've seen him play several times and he was something else, always ahead of the game.

Without doubt, Naas. Left foot or right foot, place kick, drop kick or line kick, it made no difference to him. If the other team kicked for the line he was underneath. His only weakness was that he didn't tackle. He literally single handedly won games for teams. And I was a WP supporter at the time.
its not a flyhalf's job i would say to tackle, lol, flanks and eight mans job, i never could handle Naas, but i think he was of the best ever, i dont think any other flyhalf can come close to him,

@@eisbeinGermany True. Ras was one of the best kickers ever. Never got the chances though as he was in the wrong time at the wrong place having to play in Botha's shadow. And Naas got all the opportunities
These were the glory days of past rugby 🏉 but don't get me wrong we still have glory day's of rugby 🏉
but since players get paid --they play for themselves, don't give out the ball, those years meaning 1960.70/80 it was still running rugby, today its just scrums . malls and rucks, as everyone wants to go and score a try, you hardly ever see a front row player giving out the ball, thy all run until they get tackled ,go to ground and give away a penalty for holding onto the ball,

I was in my early teens when he played for South Africa.
Used to listen the Rugby commentary on Springbok radio in Afrikaans in Northern Rhodesia back then.
Oxlee's name was very frequently in the mix

We have no footage of Bennie Osler but he was the prototype "match winning kicking flyhalf". Doc Craven referred to him as "Mr Osler", on and off the field. Even long after they both were not playing anymore.

When it comes to ice in the veins. I don't know who tops Pollie honestly. Naas didn't get the chance to play in world cup final but was also unbelievable.

Naas Botha was ‘n genie en die beste losskakel ooit. Danie Craven sag as jy verloor met Naas in jou span is daar iets fout met die afrigting.
Anders as bv Carter (maar soos DuPont, nou) druk hy sy persoonlikheid op die wedstryd af en as hy speel dan is dít die sentrale feit van die spel.

I agree with all of them. Hanro Pollard is a great goalkicker, but he doesn't create gaps and space for his outside backs.

@@eisbeinGermany He was respectful (scared?) of his seniors like Stoffberg and Wynand Claassen. And would have had serious physical damage done to him by guys like Moaner, et al if hy did not at least pass occasionally to superstars like Michael du_Plessis & Danie Gerber
@@Poepwoes well Morne du Plessis got the better of him in the one game between Northern Transvaal and Western Province of which the ref declared it was a late tackle, I think more old Naas was just too slow to get out of the way, he passed out very fast when he saw an opponent bearing down on him, lol, but even though I couldn't stand him --i still say he could read a game like a book, many have their opinion about him, lol,

Henry Honniball was not that good. He was good, but he was not outstanding or that excellent. And Naas Botha's strong point was not his try scoring, but his accurate and tactical kicking!

he was good, but i think Naas stays the best, my mother loved Lambie, such a pity he was lost to rugby, he was like Naas, could read the game, he was tto young when chosen for Boks, if he waited for say another 2 years i think he would of stayed playing, Naas could evade a tackle, lol, he saw a tackle coming his way and got rid of the ball very quickly, lol
