Always bring a fully charged jump box and a tire air compressor that can run of the lighter plug in the truck if you are parking somewhere remote. Flat tire or dead battery are very common thing to wake up to in cold weather.

I love a basic truck cap camper build. I started into RVing the same way and may end-up back under a truck cap as its by far the stealthiest way to urban camp and the most versatile for backwoods boodocking. Insulated blackout curtains and a carpet on the truck bed will both insulate, deaden the outside sound and give you privacy. These improvements will add immensely to the "livability" of your truck cap camping. Camp on!!

Liked your video. My pickup is similar. I have a camper shell with a bit more raised roof and the same type of carpet for the camper shell and the bottom of the truck bed. My pickup is a Chevy Silverado and I found I had two places for a battery (for the truck battery and one other), so I added a deep cell battery in the empty place under the hood, and had it wired up so that it recharges the deep cell battery when driving on the road, but is separate from the truck battery so that the truck battery doesn't become depleted. In the back I had had DC cables extended from the front deep cell battery to the camper shell area and I have an inverter there. I have a inside portable A/C that I have vented to the sliding window between the camper shell and the cab of the truck and a generator that I can place on a platform in the back (from the back hitch) to power it. Exhaust hot air is vented in the space between the camper shell and the cab of the truck. This has worked out by having the back of the camper nice and cool. I live in Florida so keeping cool is more important than keep warm (except it get's cold around New Years). I know, it isn't much. I came from Michigan so I do know cold and snow. Just some ideas. If you're interested in the dual battery setup, I should have the link I used to set everything up.

Don't get me wrong, but I really want to "lay into" an old friend of yours right about now, and you're absolutely correct, I have no right. But I finally figured out a few things, I'm not a psychic. Instead of being mean to a moreorless clueless individual, all glitz and glamour, that one... I'll just tell you Mav. If you guys come on here, and you take us on trips, teach us things, show us places we might never get to go, and for those of us who are finding ourselves so very much alone at the late stages of life, your company and your commentaries are like having a real friend. This is a time in our Country of great change, great sorrows, and great new innovations, new hope! It is the most pivotal time in the History of our World! But sometimes we need a freakin' break, eh? I'll watch you catch and cook some large sea insects, and I'll go to Mexico with you and dream of living such a life, and I tell you in all honesty, I have dreamed of your beautiful Minnesota for at least four years now, but I'm a native Texan, and your long cold winters would probably take me out the first season! lol... So I hope you get it, just erase this after you read it. I'm a person who sews too. You know what a seam ripper is. Thanks Mav, for being truly authentic, and kind to your followers. Your clothing line is the total BOMB too. I wish I had it all, and I will gladly share your videos, and your merch anytime. Rock on little Bro, hope your back is ok, and you're staying off the board this season.

Got more or less the same camper and bed liner on my Z71 but I like using the reclining seats in the cab for sleeping. Heat and AC work fine and entertainment system and lights are readily available. Only thing I might want is a blanket if it's below freezing to extend the time between firing up the truck for more heat but usually I camp when it's around 50 degrees at night.

Moisture is a by-product of propane combustion. If you get to the point you can afford it, buy a chinese diesel air heater in a cabinet.
For the record hot air rises. Heat goes to cold. You should get enough venting from 1 of those windows, do a test with your co detector. Enjoy
Edit: a little reflectix over the windows will give privacy and aid in insulating windows.

I thought $100 was going to be cheapo! Then you priced the cots and I knew you’d underestimated the costs involved when camping out. Bike packing is my thing and it’s a money pit! It really is. Of course you can go cheap and cheerful, but you’ll almost certainly end up cold and uncomfortable and quite possibly failing? Give yourself the best chance, I say. Which simply means buying quality gear and no gimmicks! A good vid again Mav, thank you I have enjoyed it.

Opolar makes an awesome little fan. Pretty cheap on ebay. Put a rechargeable battery in it plus you buy one of those small pocket sized solar power cells and you can hook it up with the usb cord. The cell I have will run that fan for 3 days straight, 72hrs straight still had 1/2 power left, on low to circulate your heat plus 3' away it is silent. I also have 2 of those LED lanterns that are advertised as tactical quality, on TV they also sell the flashlights they break out of the ice block, and they will last a real good amount of time too and are about the same size as your refreshment. Get some Reflectix, spelling?, from ACE and velcro it to your windows. Will help insulate. To make those a bit more homie feeling use some 3m spray glue to put some fabric on the Reflectix and make them look more like a curtain. You know, cute kittens, butterflies, deer tracks or even Oregon Ducks.

I think you should have bought a twin size memory foam topper, cut in half, placed one on top of the other, rolled with sleeping bag on top and secure with bungees for sleeping. I know Cabellas wouldn’t have that but they are awesome.

Ditch the cott, make a fancy sleeping pad/mat. More head room.

I think a small fan would help with the condensation. I bought a Ryobi one at home Depot. Runs off of their batteries. On low it'll run all night.

Get a pop button light and stick it to the top of your nightstand. Those things are great. I have about 5. Use them every time I go camping.

Lay a layer of insulation in the bed then a sheet of plywood over it will help you stay warmer and your bed will not slide as bad

Go to Kohl's, or wherever, and get yourself some of that egg carton type memory foam, cut to size, and throw it on your cot. That will help soften it up so you can sleep better. Cots tend to be hard. Another option would be a small air mattress or a Terma-A-Rest pad for on top of the cot.

    • @mav
      @mav  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, I think a new pad will be a good investment in the long run... going to take a trip with the setup how it is now, i know there will be things I want to change along the way.

If you sleep better you fish better because you feel better. Free advice from an old fart. lol
I've watched a couple of youtube videos about winter camping in a truck topper setup like this and condensation was a major problem. Something for you to consider as you do your build. Point being,, do some research.

Cover the inside of the camper's windows with ground cover cloth/mat used by gardeners to prevent weeds growing... You will be able to see out, but those outside cannot see in...
