Buying from a salvage auction? Prices still a bit nuts! No Honda Civic EP3 Type R or CLA45 for me :(

  • This is what dull men get up to midweek - back in the old days we'd get the Trading Post (jousting sticks? Tell him he's dreaming!) and highlight random cars we'd never actually buy. Now with the wonders of streaming, we can sit at home and watch auctions of cars we might actually buy.
Today I was mildy interested in a couple of cars at a Pickles salvage auction. A 2004 Honda Civic EP3 Type R, and a 2016 AMG CLA45.
The Civic is a rare one with a K20 4 cylinder engine, made in the UK! Never officially sold in Australia, my brother had one about a dozen years ago and it was a mad little car. There's only 9 for sale on Carsales, from $17000 to $35,000. This auction car needed a bit of work, and sold for $10,000 + fees. My brother though it was worth $4k at auction, I thought $8K and we were both wrong.
Next one was the CLA45 - beautifully specced in deep blue with silver wheels - very classy, unlike some lairy loud CLA45/A45s out there. Looked like no damage, a tiny bit of detailing needed. I was hoping it would sell for low 20s, it went for 30.
In all cases fees need to be added to auction cars if the car sells for $1000, it's around 15% + $130. So on the Honda it's about $1650 and on the CLA45 fees would be around $4650. Plus towing costs. Then to get them on the road, any necessary repairs, fixes, RWC and rego fees.
Bear in mind this is assuming it's a car with no WOVR record - if it's a repaireable writeoff, repairs costs are significantly higher.
    Good luck!
