Sonic Superstars Is Great, but It Has a GLARING Problem

    The bosses are the reason why I've been doing playthroughs of this game with Amy instead of Sonic. She can speed up a lot of the fights with her double jump and extended hammer range and reach their hitbox when you weren't expected to. With Amy, the boss of Pinball Carnival Act 2 doesn't even get to attack.

    Here’s my suggestion for the boss fights: Make them easier or harder depending on how many people are playing
    Like, as one player, the bosses should have invincibility frames closer to the Genesis games, allowing the player to sneak in an extra two or three hits, and make the bosses’ attacks shorter, and more players would increase the amount of s and length of attacks, I think that would be the best way to do it

    I absolutely agree that the bosses take wayyyy too long, but I disagree with the conclusion. The work they put into these bosses was awesome. Buuut, they gotta cut down the animation/ wait time and let us hit em more than once. I shouldn't be able to set my controller down and chill during a boss. Speed that stuff up!
    Also, skilled players should have opportunities to hit them more often, I hate when they spend like a whole minute chilling in the background.

    Press factory is incredibly fun because of the gimmick. It requires attention, you can jump to not get launched into the air, stand on floating platforms, and just use it to your advantage. That's the whole point.
    The bosses weren't that long until the final few zones, the fang fight and the reverse level fight, I forget what it's called, were both way too long, but the others were fun capstones to the levels. Especially with the advent of the chaos powers. If you don't use the chaos powers, they suck, sure, but the chaos powers are the entire point of the game, and if the bosses were any easier they'd be far too easy to someone who's playing as intended. I'd argue most are too easy as is. Even the desert eggman fight, while it is slow, it takes 2 minutes tops, it's incredibly easy without the chaos powers, and you only need to fight it once, unless you do Trips story, but you start that story with Super Trip, so it doesn't really matter anyway.

    I feel like the average Sonic fan would hate Kirby games, but at the same time GOD i hate the invincibility frames the bosses get

      IMO, Kirby bosses are a lot more active. Most aren't wait/attack patterns like a lot of the bosses in Superstars, and the ones that are seem to be regarded as some of the weaker bosses in the franchise. They have a lot of health, but a lot of the playtime in the boss fights is actively attacking the bosses themselves.

      Kirbt and the forgotten land was hard but you had a chance to counter attack and to dodge atracks if you learned how to do it, Trip's last boss glitches for some reason and it punishes you by going back and make you do it all over again

    I think the 2 biggest issues w/ the bosses are:
    • There is a boss at the end of every act
    • The excessive amounts of insta kill moves most of the bosses have
    That second thing is especially frustrating w/ how long most of the attacks take, really drags out how long you'll be spending on a fight.

    If we had the ability to deal more than one hit of damage each cycle the scripted nature of the bosses wouldn't be as detrimental to the experience.
    Personally I'm more frustrated with the massive difficulty spike during Trip's Story. I know it was meant to be the "& Knuckles" New Game + sort of experience but even then the difficulty was a curve and not a massive ever-growing spike like Trip's is. On top of that, her final boss should either have no rings available at all or get rid of the OHKO attacks - incredibly frustrating. And the Last Story boss is way too reliant on RNG to be enjoyable (especially when the game takes forever to fade to white for the final blow and you run out of rings before it counts as a win, restarting the fight).

    The three bosses I'd say are actually kinda bad are the Fang fight at the end of Golden Capital, the main campaigns final boss, and the end of Trips story.
    What were they thinking.....?

      Those are the exact three bosses that almost made me change my opinion on the game overall. I still like the game but seriously. I hate most of the bosses

    This game stressed me out big time, and it really wasn’t the stages themselves, it was the last few boss fights, put me through a LOT of stress, took the enjoyment out of the experience and unfortunately impacted my opinion on it.

      Same here. I was enjoying the game up until the last two to three ACTs, and it almost affected my overall opinion of the game.
      And Trip's Story, while it is the same as Main Story except more hazards, has that one boss that we do not talk about because of those TWO ONE SHOT ATTACKS
      But I still like the game

    I've been playing these games since Sonic 2 came out in 1992 and I am completely OK with these bossfights being actual bossfights. My only complaint is the difficulty with the true final boss. I've yet to beat the dragon fight and as a person with a job and responsibilities, whenever I have freetime, I like to play videogames to relax and have a fun time. The true final boss of Superstars + the King Kocos trial in Sonic Frontiers DLC3 are just way too hard. Out all the games that are out there, Sonic doesn't need difficulty this high, but if the devs want to do it, it should be implemented on the highest difficulty level.

    I maintain that the Advance trilogy has the best 2D Sonic bosses. They're generally engaging and even decently challenging without overdoing it.

      Exactly! Advance had some really solid exploration as well, utilizing all 5 characters different abilities. Wish it had more appreciation.

      @@nobodybw1962 I agree. Despite some of the levels having some annoying insta-kill traps, I think Sonic Advance 3 is the strongest game in the series. It's the perfect blend between 1 and 2, marrying the former's Genesis-style gameplay with the latter's high-speed thrills.

    I completely agree with everything you said, that's what I felt the first time I played this game. I couldn't get past the last boss with Sonic, the second half of that boss, when he starts to rotate his arms, I couldn't dodge in time and I rolled my eyes because I had to start over again, and the time you waste with each mini and final boss. And the music loops every 5 seconds.
    What I just mentioned and some of the game's music, which makes it less interesting in the level itself, everything seems so out of place, I don't know, they're the only things I hated about this game.

    The problem for me was thay while this game was super fun in the main campaign, Trips story is an absolute slog and it feels like I have to tip toe around hazards while also trying to not fall in a death pit every 5 seconds. But overall it's still an awesome game!
    EDIT - another problem I see is the glaring contrast between music, but I have a feeling that comes down to personal taste more than anything.

    The boss fights difficulty isn't a problem. It's the tedious pacing you have to deal with before landing a hit

    I havent played the game, and probably wont BECAUSE ITS 60 GODDAMN DOLLARS but I think bosses in sonic should have more strategy and not just tell you when your allowed to attack, there should be some genuine skill so that if you know what youre doing you can kill the boss way faster than someone whos playing it safe. I hate when these sonic bosses take 3 minutes until youre allowed to hit them once, I like those bosses that you can kill twice as fast if you know little tricks to damage them when youre not meant to.

    The actual reason I think why the bosses have so much down time in-between getting hits on them is the multiplayer. Since you have more than one character on screen at a time, they needed a counter measure to make sure these fight don't end to fast. Otherwise the bosses would be way to easy to cheese and they would down in less than five seconds. (Which is what you basically already said.)

    As far as the bosses go, I quite enjoyed them in the main game . With the exception of the Cyberspace boss, they didnt feel like too much of a drag for me because I was too busy appreciating bosses in Sonic the Hedgehog actually challenging me instead of the fights being cakewalks. Once I got to Trip's campaign however, the wait time in between attacks became much more annoying as the bosses attacks were much harder to dodge and the opportunities to attack back were harder to capitalize on. Then I got to the final fight against Fang...... who the fvck thought giving a ten minute fight one-hit kill attacks was a good idea?!! Then I played the final story........who the fvck thought having a Super Sonic fight be ten minutes long AND have rings spawn in a such a stingy rate was a good idea!!? Im pretty sure the last two boss fights in this game could give people ulcers from stress.

    I think the glaring problem is the multiplayer altogether. They advertised it as something that can be played with.. FOUR people, yet you can't even lead the game without pulling everyone off screen with you. I should not be holding back to wait for my friends and move slow in a Sonic game.

    You realize that the boss you are complaining about is the final boss of the main story, right? It’s supposed to be longer than the other bosses.
    Also, you are not "waiting around" when you can't attack a boss. You are dodging attacks which is just as engaging as hitting the boss is. It sure beats the Genesis games where you just jump into Eggman 8 times and he dies in 30 seconds.
    None of the bosses in Superstars take 10 minutes to beat. Most can be dealt with in 4 minutes or less (with the exception of Fang and the final bosses). I get criticizing things you don’t like in a game, and I know these bosses aren’t perfectly crafted, but you are exaggerating how long these bosses are and that in turn spreads misinformation to people.

      4 minutes normally but the final boss has a bunch of cheap instakills that end up making it take way longer

    Nah, for me bosses are almost close to perfection. No joking.
    Just the iddle animstions need to be toned down a bit as you said, but attacks and health are perfect for me. (yeah, even the Trip ones, cuz its supposed to be the hard mode, and its well executed)
    The only real disappintment about bosses is the true final boss one. That shit was not fun to watch, just a mess of bad attacks and mechanics that take too long (when you only care about ring time on that moment, wich makes it stupid). And in top of that, they barely give us any context of it existence ingame, and its 3D model is utter dogshit

    There's more than one thing wring with it, and the bosses aren't the only one sticking out
    EDIT: ok, sounds like you're giving them way too much credit here. If anything, they spent less time on the bosses than on the stages, and made sure to drag them on to pad out the short game. Tye bosses do take forever to kill, but mostly due to i-frames up the ass or the overuse of ik attacks. The final bosses, however, do spend too much tine just waiting around for no reason. Hell, most of Fang's attacks for Trip can just kill you and send you back to the checkpoint if you don't take your time. The bosses are just poorly designed, not even hard just designed like shit. The Badnick boss themes are pretty shit, too. Like, god... lol

    honestly the bosses really dragged the game for me :/ luckily having all emeralds helps as you can just cheese the bosses but the fact its almost EVERY ZONE really sucks
