@Esvin WM - seconding what lucderan said, basically. SY77 was AFM + AWM with the possibility of cross-modulation between the two (which they called RCM), plus very good digital filters and some basic effects, plus a sixteen-track sequencer, with a 61-note keyboard featuring velocity and aftertouch. (From experience - SY77 has a great keyboard.) The SY99 came out after the 77 and was basically a larger and more powerful version. It was 73 keys (one extra octave), and had, IIRC, the option of adding to the AWM wave set via data cards (to 77 has a card slot too but I believe the 99 can import user-defined waves from the cards, while the 77 cannot). I believe the 99 also has upgraded effects, and maybe a slightly higher bitrate for the AWM sounds? It also has a sequencer that, IIRC, can store multiple songs, whereas the 77 can store only one song at a time. The 85 is AWM only, fully sample-based. It too has the filters, effects, sequencer, and high-quality keyboard. The SY22 and 33 are interesting. They combine FM and AWM, similar to the 77 and 99, but in the context of vector synthesis, like on the Korg Wavestation. The 22 and 33 are cheaper than the 77 and 99, and lack any filters. I have a lot of samples of the 22, and it can generate some pretty interesting sounds.
I’ve had an SY77 since 2009. Most of my favorite sounds are aftermarket, but there are some strong presets too. Off the top of my head, Nasty Saw, Metamonics, the Dyno EP patch, Plastic Bass, Star Brass, Forest, and Traveler are all really good.
I’ve always felt this patch was a little weak on the low notes, myself. I much prefer the grand piano patches of my Korg DSS-1. The SY, in my opinion, excels more with DX-style EP patches with a bit of extra complexity via the AWM element.
The post man just brought me one of these today. I started with a TG33 years ago with an Atari ST running Cubase. Recenty i've got back into synths in a big way( 14 at the moment, over half waiting to be fixed. I'm an electronics engineer) Last year picked up a SY55 and was impressed. a few weeks later I got an SY85. That REALLY impressed me.A big improvement over the 55.(as Romplers go) I've just finished playing for the last couple of hours with the 77. The depth, warmth and just overall sonic richness, that FM brings to the table is simply staggering. Now I haven't downloaded the manual yet, but the menu is DEEP. Like..REALLY deep. God only know what the Motifs, Montages and Modx's are like! It's spurred me on to fix the DX7 mk1 i have waiting.
From programming all the synths you mentioned, I can honestly say the SY77 is the hardest. Even though the later synths are far more capable, and complicated, Yamaha has come a VERY long way with making it much easier to go menu-diving to find the setting you are looking for.
Nice demo of some of the presets. I bought my SY77 in the early 90s, and I absolutely loved it. Found this video while searching for some nostalgia! I'd forgotten how great some of the piano sounds were.
That piano in the beginning was astounding in 1989 when this synth was released! Back then the piano voices in synthesizers weren’t that great due to the lack of ROM memory. As a result they didn’t sound very realistic. The Korg M1 had very notable piano voices, but they still weren’t completely realistic. When the Yamaha SY77 came out in 1989, that piano voice was incredible! It had the most realistic sound compared to all other synths prior to it. Talk about a game-changer!
I like the piano voices in the Korg DSS-1 factory library. They’re a little bit lo-fi compared to the SY, but some of them have fantastic low-end bite. Of course, the SY77’s presets are available the second you turn the keyboard on, while you have to wait for the DSS-1 to load a sound bank from a floppy.
The “Ice Piano” patch at 4:23 reminds me slightly of PPG sounds heard on a record from 1985 titled *Bach-Handel 300.* I know the SY77 has no direct line of connection to PPG, but it kind of owes something to those synths at the same time.

I have this wonderful keyboard - however, for anyone interested, it’s an exceptional professional instrument probably one of their best - BUT IT IS NOT General Midi! You need a SY77 to Midi converter. However, it means that should anyone want to steal your discs & compositions, they need a 77 in order to do it. In that way it’s secure.
Oh dang. Was watching this because of seeing one on local Craigslist...but as a one man, multi synth situation, midi is absolutely necessary unless I can get extra hands attached...shame, I could use a couple of these cheesy FM sounds
