I'm an MB tech, we've done dozens of these on the early 654 models, the rollers are modified and it's not an issue on the later ones. The biggest issue at the minute with these engines is the tandem vac/oil pump leaking oil into the vacuum system and eventually the brake servo

As a Tech myself,familiar with these Engines would recommend to clean out the carbon build up in the Inlet manifold & both EGR Coolers too. This will improve Engine Running Efficiently aswell. 1:53 exact sound of my e200t m654.916 engine....so presumably it is the same child disease as seen in Enka motors garage for 25 times :)))). Globalization killed Stuttgart three point star! So today MB car paid 54k Euros with 340k Autobahn kilometers driven since 10/2019 has this kind of problem?! You may say I'm stupid, but it wasn't like that in last century. Cars used to work for much longer intervals without serious interventions like my E klass needs! Much respect for your videos&work! Long live & stay well !
Does it still happen on newer sprinters with the 654 engine ? 2022-2023 model. We a few at work with the 651 and 654 engine. The one i'm driving has almost 15.000km on it, oil consumption goes down as we drive more ( engine break-in period ). Had to add about 1L after 4000km. Consumption is way less now
good job, a little tip, check the silencer rubber on the gear wheel of the high pressure pump, I have had 3 cases so far, the rubber had come loose.2 pieces OM 656 and one OM 654.

And what about the missing rollers from the bearing? Leaving them inside for the oil pump to eat? And than get the engine damaged? Some of the rollers from the rocker arms bearings can even get into the timing chain and can causs serious damage there.

I work at MB and I've done them under warranty in cars with 30-60km of mileage, which is 18-40k miles ;) Once u hear It once, it is easier for you to hear them failing in the early stage.

On monday I was in MB's workshop on recall action due to some valve in cooling system and SW update for engine ecu. MB figured out that the regulation of cooling can cause water pump membrane failure. Subjective observatio after sw update: more vibrations in idle mode? Another thing is, whether to continue to do services at MB workshop or do it by myself. Changing oil and filters is not so difficult and I have my own garage with 2m deep oppening in floor. Can you share with us, who is om supplier for mercedes parts? I saw beside mercedes number also model number and logo of supplier. E.g. air filter for om 654 is usually from MAHLE, as well as oil filter. Diesel filter is from MANN HUMMEL, right? The question is, does it make sense to by om mercedes or aftermarkt? Air OM filter is around 70€ and aftermarkt 30€.
@@ludimilojko8607 Change your rocker arms if you want to drive this car for long time. If you do it early, you won't damage camshafts which are very expensive to replace. Just buy them made by INA. Do oil change yourself. A lot of mechanics in my dealership did not change oil in customers car. Change oil every 10k-15kkm. Its very simple. You wiill have to open secret ASSYST menu to measure exact amount of oil in your engine. Also you will have to buy one time use plastic oil drain screw. I am not sure of supplier of MB parts. Daimler tries to hide it. For filters use Mann, Mahle, Knecht, Kengst. Don't buy original filters from MB. They are rip off. Overall, do simple service by yourself and only go to dealership for bigger repairs.
@@ludimilojko8607 And one last thing. CHANGE YOUR WATER PUMP! There is an issue in this engine where it breaks and coolant is being sucked up into vacuum system. If that happens, repair is very expensive. Engine, transmission, timing chain will have to be taken out and oil/vacuum pump will have to be changed and a lot of other parts Read about it in internet.
Are there same issues present at om654.916 engines built in face lifted c class c180/200d? It is 1.6L 122hp or 160hp and supose it is the same engine with different ecu maps.
Possibly could be prolonged to a certain extent, the reason these rocker arms fail is because factory arms on the engine they don't seem high quality whereas the replacement ones are branded and seem better quality. Another reason, for them failing is the excessive pressure on the exhaust side dpf, cat convertor and two egrs etc.
Yes I would still recommend a 2017 e class, the 645 engine has only this rocker arm problem, which usually arises after the car has reached 100,000 miles or 150,000 km. The rest of the car is good 😊

The old rocker arms that comes off the engine they don’t have part number, barcode or brand on it. The new ones are INA brand and have barcode and are the upgraded better quality ones.

From your description, it seems that the issue would be the timing chain rather than the rocker arms. Timing chain issues will usually only make a noise when you first start the car whereas a rocker arm issue would be heard every time. Rocker arm issues will also have a knocking noise to them whereas timing chain issues will have a grinding/shuddering noise which will last a few seconds and get quieter. We have a few videos that show timing chain issues, you can browse them to compare the noise between your car and the one in the videos. I hope that was helpful

Your one is timing chain because I had same problem but mine was camshaft and timing chain Mercedes start to changing the timing chain for free because dvla told them so it’s recall

I don’t think it’s the same issue, a knocking noise coming from the engine wouldn’t lead to a car shutting off, but it could be that there was an issue with the timing chain of the car: either it snapped or jumped
@@adz3133 if the timing chain is snapped then the engine wont tick over at all or it could be that the oil pump chain has failed and the engine is seized, did you get any lights on the dash?
I have the same noise in my engine, and i have an additional problem of not having the ability of using the car pallets, and what i notice in parallel is that my car can't go further than D7, so it doens"t reach D9 anymore.
This noise indicates a problem with the camshaft or rocker arms, causing your engine to go into safety mode and your car to slow down so you can’t reach D9 anymore.

Emissions regulations have definitely killed the diesel engine. No matter how good a diesel you put in it, with 2 egr's and a massive DPF - there's no way the engine will last. It's a shame because all this does is cause more pollution in the end, also making people poorer by having them spend thousands for new parts and new cars. Much better were the times when you could buy a Mercedes and you were guaranteed for 20 years of usage - 300k miles!

You need know which knock sensor is front or rear ?
It looks like an oxygen sensor, the wiring has a Alloy flat Square block/ connector.

@@enkamotors7012 timing chain was checked it’s good stretch and tensioner was replaced.
@@lukaszszumilas9089 my opinion is the timing chain. You have to change timing chain the guides and tensioner. just the tensioner won't solve the problem

Your one is timing chain because I had same problem but mine was camshaft and timing chain Mercedes start to changing the timing chain for free because dvla told them so it’s recall

I drove the car with this noise to get it home it was an hour journey the car just suddenly cut off on m40 and won't start anymore is this the same issue?
I don’t think it’s the same issue, a knocking noise coming from the engine wouldn’t lead to a car shutting off, but it could be that there was an issue with the timing chain of the car: either it snapped or jumped

@@adz3133 if the timing chain is snapped then the engine wont tick over at all or it could be that the oil pump chain has failed and the engine is seized, did you get any lights on the dash?

I have the same noise in my engine, and i have an additional problem of not having the ability of using the car pallets, and what i notice in parallel is that my car can't go further than D7, so it doens"t reach D9 anymore.
This noise indicates a problem with the camshaft or rocker arms, causing your engine to go into safety mode and your car to slow down so you can’t reach D9 anymore.

Emissions regulations have definitely killed the diesel engine. No matter how good a diesel you put in it, with 2 egr's and a massive DPF - there's no way the engine will last. It's a shame because all this does is cause more pollution in the end, also making people poorer by having them spend thousands for new parts and new cars. Much better were the times when you could buy a Mercedes and you were guaranteed for 20 years of usage - 300k miles!
