I still think this is their best album. Aquarius is just iconic, Visions was georgeously cinematic in theming, The Mountain feels just like a pessimistic black comedy that actually throws some good sucker punches (especially Cockroach King and Falling Back to Earth), but something about Affinity keeps drawing me back in to get lost in the weeping, raging, yet apprehensively hopeful science fiction of it all.
Lyrics for the curious: Love and pain Engage your senses And let them carve the way Give me (Give me) Focus (Focus) Sharpen (Eye) My view Initiate Live here and now I forever or never I observe a world jarring in turmoil A million people waging war at the hands of a god And I can hear them cry Cold fires blazing before me An affliction fast consuming Fascinating me (Drifting) You'll be (Deeper) The live and the death of me (Into) I (The unknown) Initiate We'll make this dream Last forever or never Tears will run dry From my everwandering eye But I'm prepared to stay 'till my dying day! +Lyndon Hamer THANK you. I have been wondering what the lyrics have been since this song was released, but had trouble figuring it out myself. Well done.
13timmy30 I actually think the second to last stanza is too unclear to call the background vocals in either direction, but the remainder sounds easy enough to make out.
+Alex Kulp Definitely have to see NeO live. Couldn't see them when they played with "Der Weg Einer Freiheit" and didn't want to drive 2 hours for a 30 minute set (can't stand Cradle Of Filth). Hope they come to germany again soon.
4 weeks of this track on severe repeat mode. Can't wait to hear this track in context with the album. ................"TIL MY DYING DAY!!".................
No matter how much older I get, I'm always good to go for moments like 2:46. Love it, guys. I used to turn all of these heavy moments up on older DT stuff.
Amazing! Can't wait to see them touring with their new album. They should take Pregnant Whale Pain with them as an opening act, they're such a sick band.
+Oswald Norton They're both incredible bands, but I'm not sure that's such a great combo for a tour. Usually the headliner doesn't want the opening band to be heavier than them, they don't want a drop in energy as they come up on stage
+John Jameson I get what you're trying to say, but if you think about it, the dillinger escape plan has opened for mr. bungle and it worked out fine. Also both Pregnant Whale Pain and Haken are incredibly diverse, so they both have loads of soft and heavy parts on their music anyway. And just imagine these to singers sharing a stage, that's almost too much vocal range for a single venue to handle haha
Years later... This is probably my all time favorite chorus Melody... Like ever... I love how the instrumentals are all rythmically complicated, only to have the vocals just soar beautifully over it all. And when it comes back in The Architect... Oh my God. Fucking bravo Haken.
jefeltner11 I guess I kind of agree with some more recent albums, like Dramatic Turn and Black Clouds. But they're back in full form with The Astonishing.
Saw Haken this weekend open for Devin Townshend. Absolutely amazing. Bought the 1985 shirt at the show and now I am buying the albums. My new instant favorite band.
+Lauren Pifher on the Facebook page they uploaded an image of a Verbatim CD. (Verbatim being the manufacturer of the blank CD.) Haken decided to troll us by saying that Verbatim was the name of the album and then it became an inside joke.
I like these guys, they walk the fine line between being accessible yet progressive without disappearing up their own asses. Too many Dream Theater clones out there who don't really get it.
+Johnny Boy I was saying that in the genre there is too much DT worship and a lack of originality. DT are great but we need more bands like Haken doing their own thing.
Yeah. DT was an extremely original band when they came on the scene, but nowadays due to their popularity a large amount of others have imitated their style. Myself is included in that category (although you almost certainly never have heard my music :P) . While DT were originally influenced by bands like Genesis, Yes and Rush, they blended it into a unique formula. Haken did the same thing. At times you can hear DT in their music. Other times you can hear Gentle Giant or more modern prog bands. But most importantly, you hear a distinct Haken voice in their music.
these guys are the sickest, when they dropped their first album,I asked them if they could send me their demo, they sent it for free+signed posters, these guys are the best

+LOUDSTEEL You should check out the entire album. It was released today and is totally awesome. Each song is quite different from the next one but the album still feels cohesive and overall amazing.
Haken is my new favorite band. I have all their CD's, and each one is as good or better than the last. Top notch playing, song writing, and vocals. It comforts this old soul to know that the progressive music of my youth is still moving forward.
+Eric Cornwell Mr. Cornwell as a musician and a producer myself I have reached the limit of my musical tolerance. I find great bands with a teaspoon now days and the main reason is the intrusion of business into creativity. These are no grand news but an unfortunate truth. Haken's previous songs are a breath of fresh air. This new track is the pink asshole of music business which is lathered in shit everyday. If you don't posses the ability to recognise the interference into the bands creativity please become a toilet paper roll and assume position. Thank you and good day to you sir!
+André Luís Carvalho Welcome to the world of the internet, the place where credibility means shit! I don't care what you think of me. I reserve my credibility for the real world! This is my opinion and only my opinion. The internet gave me the power to express it as vulgar as I want. There are only a few things that I draw the line when it comes to insults.....soooo fuck all who are susceptible to shit manufactured music! Hail Lord Satan!
You are free to have your opinion and I respect it. You can't cross the line of freedom, though. You can't insult everybody that has different opinions. I know the interference your talking about happens. Falling Into Infinity came from that. You cannot judge an album by a single. Have you even read the reviews? Affinity is totally different and experimental as well. I personaly, don't see the interference here, as this sounds like Haken. And it is Haken. Good evening to you, sir! If you are willing to, lets discuss the subject in a passive way. No swear words. No insults. Thats pointless and lead you nowhere but hatred. Good evening :)
The video is a very nice surprise, it looks incredible! Im loving the song more on every listen. It has a sad atmosphere i haven't heard from Haken before.
Everytime I hear this album I think that maybe it's my favourite album EVER....now that's a MASSIVE statement and I adore 100s of albums.....Affinity absolutely blows me away every time I hear it and I only have to hear a tiny bit and I end up playing the whole album....twice!!!
It took me a while to get into Affinity I think because it was such a shift from The Mountain which is also excellent. Now I'm really digging Affinity from start to finish!
This song, while wonderful on its own, is not an accurate representation of the entire album. There is SO much variety on it, and every song is unique and refreshingly different from each other. Nothing like Aquarius, Visions, or The Mountain; nothing like you've ever heard, in fact. You're going to be blown away. Trust me.
Great work, can't wait to hear the full album. Bass playing isn't something i normally pay much attention to but was the most stand out part for me. Really present, solid playing, great melodies - awesome job!
jefeltner11 That will work for me too! This song just sounds very dark to me, maybe its the video as well but if the rest of the album has a brighter sound that's still going to be awesome cause this tune was so much better than I'd hoped it would be :)
has anyone figured out the morse code? Awesome track. I've probably heard it 100 times now (Yes, really) Can't wait to receive the album! They are going to be in Cruise to the Edge again in Feb 2017 !!!
I am having a hard time loving the rest of Haken on first listen, but this song has struck me as nothing less than incredible. Definitely a huge win here.
sometimes those are the best songs because it takes a couple listens to get you to appreciate them... i found that with bands like audioslave, especially DT, and now they are my all time favourite band. they were my first prog band, so it was hard at first. but also with this album, 1985 didnt catch me at first, and i love it now!!
+Jolly is the best band ever. But but but Leprous is obviously the only band in the world to use atypical rhythms and time signatures other than 4/4, right?
Leprous uses guitars -> Haken uses guitars. Leprous has a singer -> haken has a singer. Leprous plays notes -> Haken plays some of the exact same notes! COINCIDENCE?? Can't they play something else instead? Like ants or something. Ants haven't been used in music yet, now THAT would be unlike Leprous.
+Jolly is the best band ever. They're the same genre of muisc pretty much. Progressive rock/metal with clean vocals. Leprous is weird though so they have that going for em.
Leprous make ONE album that's rhythmically based and suddenly Haken are ripping them off :P The production on this sounds fucking immense. The bass sounds during the first verse, and that fucking breakdown thing at 2:45 is absolutely fucking CRUSHING. I can't wait a whole month.
I'm listening to my pre-ordered copy of this album, and as amazing as the two tracks released on TH-cam are, Affinity has tracks that are far, far fucking better. Phenomenal job across this album.
Yes: something old (I can hear some echoes from The Mountain) , something new, something borrowed (someone said Leprous, definitely maybe, but also - suprisingly enough - even a touch of VHB) of course there's something blue, too - looking forward hearing the rest of the album Affinity
THIS is one of the best things I have ever treat my ears to! Like all the best prog metal I've ever heard mixed into 1 but with a fresh sound and gorgeous use of harmony.....I can hear allsorts....DT, Opeth, Frost, Pain of Salvation, Porcupine Tree, Meshuggah perhaps? They also remind me of an old band I used to like called Cynic :)
Missed one click on You Tube while exploring prog rock bands two month ago and ...BAMM...WTF...How can i missed that band till now. can't stop listening since
Wow, first time hearing these guys. Definitely getting some early 00s Porcupine Tree vibes in some parts. Well, time to check out the rest of their stuff ^^
+Private.Cain Unfortunately for a being a huge DT fan I think almost every band bested DT this year, not a fan of the Astonishing at all after trying for weeks to like it. Screw it new Haken, new Jelly Jam, new Jolly all good.
Just checking this band out. I've seen them on the Mike portnoy's shattered fortress tour in Tilburg and they were amazing!!! But there own music sounds very good to. I think I'm sold!!!

Live here and now
I forever or never
I observe a world jarring in turmoil
A million people waging war at the hands of a god

Cold fires blazing before me
An affliction fast consuming
Fascinating me

The live and the death of me

We'll make this dream
Last forever or never
Tears will run dry
From my everwandering eye
But I'm prepared to stay

In tomorrow's memories
I'll do things you can't concieve

+Lyndon Hamer THANK you. I have been wondering what the lyrics have been since this song was released, but had trouble figuring it out myself.
Well done.
+ShadowMKII No Problem friend :)
+Lyndon Hamer
Actually, for the second to last stanza, the vocals in the background are singing "Distance stretches further from home."
13timmy30
I actually think the second to last stanza is too unclear to call the background vocals in either direction, but the remainder sounds easy enough to make out.
+ShadowMKII I'm quoting from the official lyrics
Really liking Conner Green contributions, he maintained the Haken style but at the same is adding his own charm to the bass.
These Conner's bass lines... Eargasm
Haken know how to write a chorus. All of them are haunting and with perfect chord progressions.
Isn't a chord progression like a braid or a rope or something?

Don't think I've yet heard a bad haken song. Tells you something about this band
+garruksson For sure! Oh... and Ne Obliviscaris!!! Another fantastic band!
+Alex Kulp Yes! Hopefully they will release something new soon.
Seen Ne Obliviscaris live yet? They are just as impressive.
+Alex Kulp Definitely have to see NeO live. Couldn't see them when they played with "Der Weg Einer Freiheit" and didn't want to drive 2 hours for a 30 minute set (can't stand Cradle Of Filth). Hope they come to germany again soon.
I got lucky and Cradle of Filth couldn't make it to Philly, so NeO played a separate headlining set at another venue. We were so lucky!
4 weeks of this track on severe repeat mode. Can't wait to hear this track in context with the album.
................"TIL MY DYING DAY!!".................
me too!!
I reckon that's going to be me....I can't get enough of this track....
Great song. Looking forward to "The Architect"!
+quietriot checked out album, and immediately thought the same.
The Architect is totally amazing...excellent song. This song is awesome too.

+Oswald Norton haha what a band name, now I gotta check them out
I loveeee Haken!!!!! my favorite progressive band thanks to this album.
It was my favorite since I listened to the Aquarius album last year. I hope you explore earlier albums as well. You won't regret it!
Years later... This is probably my all time favorite chorus Melody... Like ever... I love how the instrumentals are all rythmically complicated, only to have the vocals just soar beautifully over it all. And when it comes back in The Architect... Oh my God.

+Darth Bieber out soon !!
Well, at least people aren't saying they sound like Dream Theater anymore.
+KyleJPie10 :D!
+KyleJPie10 Good because that's a synonym with uninspired.
bluehope42 I disagree wholeheartedly.
+KyleJPie10 I see where he's coming from, but I still like DT.
jefeltner11 I guess I kind of agree with some more recent albums, like Dramatic Turn and Black Clouds. But they're back in full form with The Astonishing.

Saw Haken this weekend open for Devin Townshend. Absolutely amazing. Bought the 1985 shirt at the show and now I am buying the albums. My new instant favorite band.
Best song from VERBATIM album!!!!

+JRob38 so far..
+Nicholas Rushen explain to me please.
+Lauren Pifher on the Facebook page they uploaded an image of a Verbatim CD. (Verbatim being the manufacturer of the blank CD.)
Haken decided to troll us by saying that Verbatim was the name of the album and then it became an inside joke.
Goodness, Affinity is a masterpiece of an album!
I like these guys, they walk the fine line between being accessible yet progressive without disappearing up their own asses. Too many Dream Theater clones out there who don't really get it.
+Golem29 What are you saying? That Haken get Dream Theater and the others don't?
+Johnny Boy I think he means that Haken blows DT away like old dust.....
micanut48
Don't be absurd. DT is one of the best bands of all time
+Johnny Boy I was saying that in the genre there is too much DT worship and a lack of originality. DT are great but we need more bands like Haken doing their own thing.

Only just discovered and it's freaking awesome! The contrast between the falsetto-type of voice and the heavy distorted guitars is quite outstanding.
+LOUDSTEEL You should check out the entire album. It was released today and is totally awesome. Each song is quite different from the next one but the album still feels cohesive and overall amazing.
+R0DisG0D convenient for me then, because I was unaware at all that they where working on a new album haha
Haken is too much for me... it gives me so much emotions and happiness that my poor body cant bear... Every Haken song its a fucking universe.
Great video, great song, great band. What else can we expect from haken? Looking forward to hear the whole thing.
Psyched for the album. I love these guys and think they're evolving really well. Hope they come back to NYC!

Good job guys, amazing stuff as usual! A lot of the quieter vocal sections sound like Ian Kenny from Karnivool, love it.
Affinity album is one of the best albums of 2016 imho.
You know when you hear a album you pick the best song you like from it? well the thing with haken, you don't pick a song,
you just pick haken:)
Haken picks you. :)
WIN
They have another song out called curtain call or something like that. what's the meaning of the song?

It took me a while to get into Affinity I think because it was such a shift from The Mountain which is also excellent. Now I'm really digging Affinity from start to finish!

My favorite album of 2016.
I'm so glad these guys are finally getting the spotlight! They seem to just get better and better, and I hope this never ends.
great single! waiting for the full work.
My god, the production is awesome!
Can't Wait for the new album.
Not quite what I expected but I'm still looking forward to hearing the whole album!.. Haken FTW
Great work, can't wait to hear the full album. Bass playing isn't something i normally pay much attention to but was the most stand out part for me. Really present, solid playing, great melodies - awesome job!
+Chris Cheetham I appreciate that, Chris. Thanks a lot!
LOVE this, so much more than I was expecting, the music is darker but the Haken sound is still all over this and Ross has never sounded better.
I read that the album is supposed to have a much brighter sound overall. We'll see, I suppose.
jefeltner11 That will work for me too! This song just sounds very dark to me, maybe its the video as well but if the rest of the album has a brighter sound that's still going to be awesome cause this tune was so much better than I'd hoped it would be :)
has anyone figured out the morse code?
Awesome track. I've probably heard it 100 times now (Yes, really)
Can't wait to receive the album!
They are going to be in Cruise to the Edge again in Feb 2017 !!!
+enchantgy I thought the same thing the first time I heard the song. There's a Morse code and it may mean something
I am so buying everything this band ever made...these guys are incredible!!!!
I am having a hard time loving the rest of Haken on first listen, but this song has struck me as nothing less than incredible. Definitely a huge win here.

Really doesn't sound THAT much like leprous guys. Definitely not enough to warrant this many comments about it.
+Jeroen Moons No, they should play Hair. Like Pain Of Salvation once did. :)
+Jeroen Moons Playing ants. That is the most prog thing I have ever heard. Like fuck you I play animals now
+Jolly is the best band ever. They're the same genre of muisc pretty much. Progressive rock/metal with clean vocals. Leprous is weird though so they have that going for em.

Opeth and Porcupine Tree already did it years ago. This is still great tho...
fantastic song, it's been a while since I couldn't wait for an album release!
Excelent !!!!! I´m waiting for Affinity !!!!
Congratz Haken! The taste of simplicity on this track is remarkable! Vocals for days!
yesterday in Milan... I love your music! Just amazing!
Great Epic Music, great musicians, Super Production....I´m in.
I'm listening to my pre-ordered copy of this album, and as amazing as the two tracks released on TH-cam are, Affinity has tracks that are far, far fucking better. Phenomenal job across this album.
Awesome video but one must ask, was Charlie even featured, not even once?! Brilliant album from the guys yet again.
0:27 and then 0:31
Yes: something old (I can hear some echoes from The Mountain) , something new, something borrowed (someone said Leprous, definitely maybe, but also - suprisingly enough - even a touch of VHB) of course there's something blue, too - looking forward hearing the rest of the album Affinity
This band never disappoints!!! Just like Kevin Bacon!
Album in my collection, thanks for vid.
Just discovered them- possibly new favourite band. Hints of tesseract hints of dream theater but unique! Yes please!
already ordered this album ..awesome music I will say music from the future
I like the sound, it's different but I'm excited to hear more of the album.
*Best Haken song so far*
see you guys at ArtMania !!! can`t wait!

I felt goosebumps when this album dropped - what a great song.

the sound of perfection...
Wow, first time hearing these guys. Definitely getting some early 00s Porcupine Tree vibes in some parts. Well, time to check out the rest of their stuff ^^
there is no doubt that Affinity will be another masterpiece
boy i wish i was the drummer in this song, getting lost in the music, giving 1000% of your soul.
Keep it up Haken! We love your spirit and music! Thanks
Absolutely brilliant.
what a beautiful piece!!
One of the best song came in 2016.
This band bested DT in this year.
+Private.Cain As a massive DT fanboy...yep. The Astonishing is pretty sick, but this in on a whole new level of prog.
+Dan Saillant I agree. The astonishing is pretty good concept album, but I think Haken will make a better album in this year.
+TheGoldfish illegal downloading is what destroys artists
okay thats something different, sorry
+Private.Cain Unfortunately for a being a huge DT fan I think almost every band bested DT this year, not a fan of the Astonishing at all after trying for weeks to like it. Screw it new Haken, new Jelly Jam, new Jolly all good.
Anyone else getting a karnivool vibe from this?
Exactly. That's the one!

Pip Stanton That was the first thing that popped in my head when I listened to them for the first time! It's what helped me get into them so quickly.
