This is my happy song now. Since it was released I've listened to it when I've felt at my lowest, pretty much ready to just give up and take the easy way out. It's kinda pathetic but... It worked. Found the video just today while having dropped down the lowest I've been in months pretty much ready to go, and now I feel kind of okay. Thanks. I really needed this.
Best song off of "Affinity"' for me. Short and sweet. The melody during "One step back, take two leaps forward." is by far one of the catchiest melodies I've ever heard. Absolutely love this song
+Monserrat Fallas Madrigal Nice! Hahaha in some way Wilson's music makes me happy but in a different way than Haken does! So happy to have them both in my life!
+mamlasu yeah, but in comparison to their other albums, this one is the most toned down. I actuality prefer the instrumental version of the Architect more than the regular for some reason
Y'all should definitely check out the band riverside. In particular the EP Amino Domini High Definition for keys. Their keyboardist is actually more of a sound engineer.
a beautiful work of art, this a incredible song, the vocals are amazing, the band sound is perfect, thank you HAKEN for this joy of music... the second best metal prog album of this year, one of the greatest of all times!
I'm curious, what would be the best in your opinion? 'Cause for me this is taking the top spot with Bent Knee's "Say So" and David Bowie's "Blackstar" being the 2 albums to rival it for album of the year.
this a good year for music, specially for progressive metal, i'm taking about the second best because, imho, Dream Theater's The Astonishing is the first. let's wait now for Sorceress by Opeth, will be released soon! PS: Bowie's Blackstar is a great great album!
i loved it, the progressive sound is polished and is a natural evolution of what Opeth has been doing, i have only one little complaint: i don't want them to sound like Steven Wilson, i want Opeth with their unique sound.. but it seems they getting more close to Wilson's sound than ever.
I love an insanely talented band with amazing catalogue that is able to be completely self-aware of their cheesiness and not give a flying fuck about it!
I came back to this song after I while... I´m going through the hardest times of my life... and this is a spark of joy that was needed. I am thankful that there are still musicians that aim for transmitting such deep feelings. It makes me feel that there is still hope.
What I've heard of the new material so far suggests that this album will surpass even The Mountain, which is saying something. Every track has been bloody excellent.
They are both insanely great albums... I love the more contemporary-prog approach of Affinity but The Mountain is just so god dam epic and beautiful. There is room in my heart for both!
Haken: It's very, very special, if you can see. The cheesiness all goes to 11. Look, right across the board. Eleven, eleven, eleven, eleven. Fan: Does it mean it's cheesier? Is it any cheesier? Haken: Well, it's one cheesier, isn't it? It's not ten, you see, most band will be cheesing at 10. You are on 10 here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you are on 10 here on your cheesiness. Where can you go from there? Where? Fan: I don't know. Haken: Nowhere, exactly. What Haken does, if we need that extra push over the cheese, you know what we do? Fan: Put it up to 11. Haken: 11, exactly. 1 cheesier. Fan: Why don't you just make 10 cheesier, and make 10 the top cheese and make it a little cheesier? Haken: But this goes to 11. I love it!

About the video accompanying this song: it was *supposed* to look this cheesy. As the whole Affinity album looks back with a wink to the eighties, the decade of mtv and bad videoclips.
5 years ago when this song came out I really loved it, and I made the unfortunate mistake of listening to it before bed. Even now, if I so much as get the song in my head I'm yawning up a storm and drowzy for a good while. And if I am laying down listening I'm asleep by the chorus
+S-PRO Gaming It is gorgeous, indeed. They demonstrate such skills on all their previous albums as well. Not only it gets really complex in there but it is still in line with the piece itself, gently transforming back into the core idea. I love this band.
axlrosea675 I said "one of the most beautiful". Dream Theater have been among my favourite bands since I heard A Change Of Seasons for the first time in 1997. I don't think I would be into bands like Haken if it wasn't for Dream Theater's influence on my current music taste and on bands like Haken who no doubt grew up listening to them. Dream Theater have many many beautiful moments throughout their music too and I love the fact more bands are playing progressive metal with a modern twist these days. Haken are one of the best around but Dream Theater will always be the kings of prog metal.
Having listened several times to "The Endless Knot" and twice to this tune, I ordered "Affinity" and expects a lot from it. That mix of "pop" melodies with "prog/prog metal" arrangements sounds very good to my years, as did Frost's "Milliontown" more than ten years ago.
+Scott Yecora You won't be disappointed. I also recommend checking out their older albums, especially Aquarius. "Streams" is a great track with an uplifting vibe and "Celestial Elixir" may still be their best track.
I hate the 1980's. I hate everything about it: the fashion, media and most of all the music. I don't understand people's obsession or nostalgia with the decade. But now, HAKEN have done something amazing; They have made a gorgeous album that draws from the 80's and I love it despite that. HAKEN have literally taken something I hate and turned it into something I love.
The 70's are arguably the most inventive, groundbreaking, multi-genre expanding and prolific decade for music in modern history. The 90's I'm not so sure about. I don't think there is any comparison between the two decades.
The Abyssal Archivist A lot of it was cringy, but a lot of it only sounds cheesy because it's been copied so much. Aside from classics like Iron Maiden, I legitimately do believe Helloweens "Keeper Of The Seven Keys Part 1" is a masterpiece. Aside from Metal I dare anyone to tell me that between Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush and The Smiths, the 80s weren't the greatest decade for Pop music. The 70s are still my favourite decade of music, but I've really warmed up to the 80s in the last couple of years.
One step back Take two leaps forward And with baited breath we wait For Generation X to fade Embracing the emancipation How will history remember A masterpiece chiselled to dirt? Collapsing pillars of the Earth A march of progress in reverse Blood fills my lifeless heart Eyes flicker in the dark Two Steps back One Leap forward You let your shackles fall with grace Still counting on that wish you made To reach out far beyond the pale How I dream to feel alive Bestow upon these vital signs The lunar path dictates the tide Will we ever reach the shoreline? It´s hard for me to find a reason why this video has "only" 140k visualisations. This is Music with capital M. I guess that, for the majority of people, it's just too complex and gives a lot of work to understand. Citing Porcupine Tree, Music is definitely "one of the blunders of the world that no one cares enough". Great instrumental and vocal execution, outstanding composition, deep and inspiring lyrics: What more can we ask for? Thanks Haken. You guys have an eternal place in my playlist.
True story!! Haken make every album a whole new experience!! This song it's beautiful and really estimulates and gives you real joy! The vocals, the music itself!! Wonder now what Haken will deliver us in the future... what ever that is, I'm glad to live in the same era that this guys! Thanks, again, Haken!
I mostly wouldn't listen to the song here, rather than from the CD, because of the less-than-optimal quality, plus having to be on the net and load to listen it.
Ahh these sweet prog bards, love 'em. I love the rythmic theme of Initiate, scattered through all the album. I love the instrumental tracks. I like the lyrics too; I'm a fan, guys.
You can criticize the video and the poses all you want, but what happens from 2:55 is the most amazing execution and chord progression I've ever heard in progressive music with the highest peak at 3:16
one of my favorite from the album just found out about you guys this month. its fucking amazing how i never knew you guys are a fucking brilliant amalgamation of dream theater, periphery, circus maximus, tool, and a pinch of coldplay its mind blowing
I heard this song for the first time on Spotify the other day on my way home in traffic. For some reason I get a real 80's feeling to the vocals. He could have sang songs from the early to mid 80's. The lead guitarist seems to pay a lot of respect to Eddie Van Halen and the progressive metal of the late 80's to 90's.
Amazing band! Amazing music! Much better than Dream Theater in last albums! Fresh blood in progressive music!!! BRAVO!!! This is my opinion not only as a fan, but as a musician too!
I come back to this so often, whether its the video or just part of my album sessions... why? It's a Haken song. Joking aside though, it really uplifts me with how damn powerful it is. It feels like a victory, and if you listen along with the lyrics and with good headphones start to finish fully tuned in, and this DOESN'T make you feel SOMETHING, then hopefully you're not a psycopath but only just a sociopath. Either way, you're one of the two. Lol don't get offended or take me serriously, I'm just a fanboy fuckin around
Thank you Haken for re-inventing yourselves :). Its always a risky step but that's what Progressive music is all about. Even though I like many bands that stay to a formula (that "they" may have honed, inspired or invented) ;).
I watch this video every day with my 3 year old son. He gets a big smile whenever he sees Ross and says he's his favorite ☺
Awww haha really?
Have you showed him cockroach king?
@@juggadore Hah no, he doesn't have the attention span to watch another song
That's so funny! I watch this everyday with my 1.5 year old, something about this video lights him up!
Lovely.
This song we played on our wedding time :) Thanks HAKEN!
This is my happy song now. Since it was released I've listened to it when I've felt at my lowest, pretty much ready to just give up and take the easy way out. It's kinda pathetic but... It worked. +Sparky Stardust Summers That's the ability of this group of chaps called Haken. Glad to see you back on track again
Love all around bro
Resolve to carry on!
It's officially my happy song now too! I discovered it last week and I have to stop myself from playing it 10 times in a row!!
Expectation : headbang
Reality : hustle dance
hahahahaha
Best song off of "Affinity"' for me. Short and sweet. The melody during "One step back, take two leaps forward." is by far one of the catchiest melodies I've ever heard. Absolutely love this song
Not enough prog-metal songs written almost entirely in a major key like this
Green and Cream is great too!
The Guilt Machine Song?
Twisted Illusion - Extrovert VS Introvert will please you! Major key and Mixolydian stuff dotted about!
What?
Try A.C.T song buddy
Man you canmot be depressed with this song at your side! God, Haken gives me such happiness I cant even describe it!
This comment and your profile picture, the irony haha. I agree with you btw.
+Monserrat Fallas Madrigal Nice! Hahaha in some way Wilson's music makes me happy but in a different way than Haken does! So happy to have them both in my life!
Really? This song is already kind of depressing…
I didn't know prog could be so joyful
the entire album is mellow like this. I like it
I kinda disagree. The Architect is quite heavy and also trippy. Red Giant is very trippy, almost frightening.
+mamlasu yeah, but in comparison to their other albums, this one is the most toned down. I actuality prefer the instrumental version of the Architect more than the regular for some reason
+Maestro of Metal Endless Knot is pretty aggressive.
Ikr, I thought it was all about mental illness and depression and schizophrenia but I guess prog can alsp have happy themes.
This song is so damn happy that when it ends life seems even more depressing
+Tiziano Fratini Especially when it's followed by the deep dark depressing supermassive "Red Giant" like on the album O.o :'( -_-
Bruh. Just put it on repeat. Resolve to Carry On.
Thought this was about the moonlanding/terraforming and colonizing other planets.
Compare and contrast it to something like somebody from mountain. Shows how that haken isn’t willing to be tonally stagnant.
Right now I feel like we are at the "march of progress in reverse" stage. I love this song; it came at such an appropriate time.
It's weird when the coolest guy in your band is the keyboardist
Should be a more common thing. Synthesizers are amazing
@@Aquatarkus96 agreed :)
They're all the coolest
He who handles the keys, leads the way👁️🖤🔥
Y'all should definitely check out the band riverside. In particular the EP Amino Domini High Definition for keys. Their keyboardist is actually more of a sound engineer.
This band is impossibly good
Suspiciously good. Haken are CIA.
I keep returning to this gem - it's arguably the most uplifting metal song ever.
The transition from chorus to verse at 1:25 is so darn tasteful.
Some of Ross' poses in this video are straight comedy
"some"
Sometimes he looks like he is singing for a child's video
@@mrschimmel th-cam.com/video/5L1tr0PIx20/w-d-xo.html
truth but I can't help but kinda like it
I don't remember the last time I saw Ross and didn't chuckle a bit. Guy is a walking meme lol.
Absolutely stunning musicians. Absolute talent. I am so proud of them. I am so happy they exist. Wow.
7 years later and I discovered them. They're my favorite band, I'm gonna see their "evening with Haken" tour in 2024!
a beautiful work of art, this a incredible song, the vocals are amazing, the band sound is perfect, thank you HAKEN for this joy of music... the second best metal prog album of this year, one of the greatest of all times!

Ignacio Medina Same with Riverside and Anathema. what's with the steven wilson collaborations sounding more like him than the band used to?
For me it's the best, astonishing was horrible imo
This is easiestly the happiest song I've ever heard
I love an insanely talented band with amazing catalogue that is able to be completely self-aware of their cheesiness and not give a flying fuck about it!
We like good taste rather than looks :)
haken knows EXACTLY what they're doing. they never changed that
Can a man and a band be legally wedded?
Winterwolf Panzerkampf looking into it
People marry pillows. Anything is possible.
I believe you´d need the band´s consent though
Nor only that, but you'll probably have a good amount of competition.
I came back to this song after I while... I´m going through the hardest times of my life... and this is a spark of joy that was needed. I am thankful that there are still musicians that aim for transmitting such deep feelings. It makes me feel that there is still hope.

1:01 is priceless
Feels like Toto to me
lol
Shivers down my spine!
Gosh, this video is dumb as shit. I love them so much

Dang, take a date…
Five minutes of pure happiness
Just saw Haken this last weekend, Orlando. What a blessing. It was my introduction. Damn Corona Virus shut down the tour days later.
This is the most beautiful song haken has ever written, gets me to tears every time.
This might be the best song ever created...yes there are more difficult songs to play...this one is just perfect
I've been a fan of Haken since they first released Aquarius. It makes me so happy to see that they've come so far.
This song is so good :')

Started listening to Haken again. Absolutely love these guys. My fav prog band.
my favorite band of all times, never seen such awesomeness
The instrumental section from 2.53 is one of the most beautifully awesome pieces of progressive metal ever written.
+S-PRO Gaming It is gorgeous, indeed. They demonstrate such skills on all their previous albums as well. Not only it gets really complex in there but it is still in line with the piece itself, gently transforming back into the core idea. I love this band.
Yeah, it really takes off at 3:19, beautiful. Uplifting.
