Oh, the joy of having a tiny crack in the lens of your camera. It still looks best in 1080 though, even if TH-cam seems to sporadically disagree. Anyway, consider yourselves blinded by light.
If this video hadn’t already spiraled beyond control, I would have added March of the Dreadnaughts to this list. Just so you know.

    Hello from france!
It's really sad that you no longer make videos I really liked your analysis and I would have liked more videos I shared your videos a lot with friends and they liked them too... I hope to see more others one day 👍

Absolutely brilliant, thanks for making this, and glad YT is starting to recommend such enticing content. It's brilliant to be living the (kinda sad) story of Hope through the music, and we know they put a lot of attention to such details when composing them.

Thank you so much! The musical story-telling in the FFXIII trilogy is absolutely magnificent. You can really tell that the composers weren't just settling for good music - they wanted the music to match the plot too.

Loved this! This was a great analysis video. The FF13 soundtrack is so amazing, I love Hamauzu and Mitsuto's style. I've even noticed that their styles have started to rub off in my own composing.

Thank you! I rarely compose myself, but when I do, I have a tendency to use (or at least try to use) Hamauzu's crescendo style. Otherwise, my composing is totally tainted by Soken.

What do I say other than WOW. I learn so much about music from watching your video essays. It's always been a struggle for me to hear how Hope's theme changes throughout the trilogy, but you laid it out so well that I finally feel like I get it. You also gave me new perspective on The Ark. I always attributed the choir and harp to Bhunivelze. It seemed to me that those parts of the track were the evidence of God's control over Hope since a choir and harp are so classically angelic/heavenly. I figured that their absence in Meeting You was due to the fact that Bhunivelze has no control within the unseen realm where Hope and Lightning have their talk. But you mention how those missing bits show up again when Lightning wakes Hope up from within Bhunivelze and that gets me thinking. Why does Hope's theme contain angelic components if not for God's influence? I'm so so so curious.
Also, your insight into the symbolism of the guitar and violin being chosen for 'Epilogue' has sent me. I'll never hear that track the same way again.
    Fantastic, beautiful, gorgeous job!

Thank you so much! Explaining chains of motifs like this is pretty much impossible when you can't show things visually as well as verbally. I'm glad I could be educational!
Your point about choir/harp being Bhunivelze-coded really made me think. I have two answers: one boring, one tinfoil tiara.
      - To achieve the "rising" sound in Last Resort, they needed light instruments and clear chords. The piano accompaniment in Lightning Returns has been consistently heavy and a little dissonant because of its extended chords. You can't get that "emerging from the darkness" effect with that kind of piano in the soundtrack, which might be why they chose choir/strings/harp for that part instead. Same with Credits. They would never have managed to create such a powerful orchestral piece with that kind of piano accompaniment.
      - The tinfoil tiara reason? We haven't heard Hope's Theme since 1X AF. That's a millennium of character growth (minus the years he was asleep), and like I said in the video - he was already heading toward godhood when we left him. The choir is the part of The Ark that actually has his theme from XIII-2 in it. The rest is new. So... maybe the choir/strings/harp part is what Hope became during those years when he kinda stopped being a person. Maybe he did become a god, ish. At least a Jesus figure. He did do pretty well in that PVP against Bhunivelze. I have a harder time explaining the piano, but it could symbolize him letting go of the old world. Lumina also has a dissonant piano theme, so the piano is... Vexing.
I love that tiara. Lets me go batshit crazy with symbolism that's most likely unintentional.

@@musicwithcecilia Haha! That's what I was leaning toward too. As you said, Hope was basically a god already before Bhunivelze even entered the chat. Why shouldn't he get his own harp and choir? He's earned them.

CECCCCC, this was such a great vid. You've very clearly shown how each theme evolved and changed. And the way the different arrangements evoke different emotions and are influenced by other parts. I loved it!

Thank you!! Ever since I did Almighty Bhunivelze, I've felt like this video was kind of inevitable. I couldn't just analyze two links on a fantastic chain and leave it at that. Technical difficulties aside, I'm glad it worked out!

Excellent! Absolutely excellent. And the lens crack makes it broken, just like Hope.

Meeting You has ALWAYS been my favourite piece from the LR soundtrack. Interesting that Lightning ended up filling in the missing parts of the Ark. Just another bit of storytelling told through the music.

In Japanese 'Sustained by Hate' is Titled '恩讐の果て Onshuu no Hate' (that is the Japanese word ha-te not the English word hate) which is usually translated as 'The End of Love and Hate'. Onshuu is a compound word that combines the kanji for blessing and curse and is translated as 'love and hate' (a kind of encompasing word that is about the two contradicting terms combined into one feeling) and Hate means end/fate/result etc. So, from what I can tell, yeah, this theme is about someone struggling through the emotions brought to him: but more how loving someone sometimes causes you to hate (Hope's anger at Snow born from his grief because he loved his mother, Hope's distance from his father born from a yearning to understand each other...and, eventually, how losing the bonds closest to you can birth despair). The title Sustained by Hate does fit in with the original title (particularly the end result of Hope's emotional turmoil at a particular point in time) but it loses the more rounded emotional tone of Hope's contradictory emotions and how although he is sustained by hate at one point, it's ultimately his love (for his father, for his mother, for his friends) that keeps him going, even when the negative emotions that sometimes happen BECAUSE of love kick in.
This rant brought to you by my shitty Japanese knowledge, your comment on how it's the 'least' lonely theme and how it has a sense of belonging to it, and the emotional overload I had the first time I actually looked into the Japanese title.

Amazing addition! I almost feel like I could almost have done that part without the tinfoil tiara with this context. (I love the tiara though. My new aesthetic is Tinfoil Fancy.)

You know I don't fan here (I barely game at all ever) but exposing myself to all this passionate talk about this story in particular is tempting me a lot to go find some game movie or something (or...plural, since it's three games)
As ever I enjoy your musical talks, I hope you don't run out of talking power. But also that's not a tiara either it's a diadem but it's cute you should keep it.

I did almost run out of voice there at the end, but run out of musical talking power? Never. I'll ramble forever.
      I'm totally keeping the tiaradem.

I always thought you were a chill person and really cute back in school in the 7th - 9th grade but was too much of a pussy to say anything, lmao.
Small world that I'd stumble across this channel , love the content too!
