Prince was a Genius, and I'm a hardcore Metalhead, not many of us will admit to that but the guy was one of the best musicians ever, Not long ago, When someone asked Eric Clapton what it was like to be the greatest guitar player in the world, he responded: "I don't know, ask Prince."

@Honesty First So yes... and no. Prince knew how to record as good as anyone else, and he would prep 'demos' that were very good quality. but he also hired the best producers and recording engineers in the business. check out some interviews with Sylvia Massey and others who worked with him. yeah, he knew his shit. yeah, he'd tell them exactly what he wanted and what recording techniques and gear to use most of the time. but he did still hire the best to do it. recording yourself is extremely tedious. recording others is genuinely fun. being recorded is reasonably fun. yes, he was able to record himself, and sometimes did... but usually he'd call in some help. it's just a lot to do.

As it is with most musical/artistic geniuses, he left us way too early. I have always held the theory that the depth of feeling it takes to create true genius oftentimes is too overwhelming. Exceptional artists feel more deeply, live inside their heads, use their pain, loneliness, loss, fear, to create beautiful art, but that same beauty is a poison which over time takes them from us.

One understated talent I personally appreciated by Prince is that his songs had a powerful first lyric...."Dig you will of a picture, of you and I engaged in a kiss." or "She always wears a long coat of mink..even in the summertime." or "There's a place where I come from called...Heaven." and many more. Good Stuff! I know he was heavily influenced by singer-poetess Joni Mitchell.

Nicks has often told the story of how she wrote the song. She wrote it on the day of her marriage to Kim Anderson on January 29, 1983. The newlyweds were driving up to San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara when Prince's song "Little Red Corvette" came on the radio. Nicks started humming along to the melody, especially inspired by the lush synthesizers of the song, and "Stand Back" was born. They stopped and got a tape recorder and she recorded the demo in the honeymoon suite that night. Later, when Nicks went into the studio to record the song, she called Prince and told him the story of how she wrote the song to his melody. He came to the studio that night and played synthesizers on it, although his contribution is uncredited on the album. He and Nicks did agree however to split the publishing royalties on the song 50-50. Then, she says, "he just got up and left as if the whole thing happened in a dream."[2][3][4] The main intro of the song features an Oberheim OB-Xa synthesizer. The synth-bass is played on a Roland Jupiter 8. On the Rock a Little tour, the Oberheim is replaced with a Yamaha DX7.
There were two mixes made of the song; the generally more well-known album version (4:48) and the edited single version (4:18). Differences between the two are somewhat subtle, but the single version tends to have more of a "collapsed" or "mono" sound to it and the electronic drum programs are mixed, rather dry and flattened, especially in the song's intro bars; whereas the drum tracks on the album version are accentuated by a generous amount of reverb effect and harder compression. Acoustic drums were given a more backseat role on "Stand Back". There is a further 'polished' version of the track, with crisper percussion and louder foreground synth, featured on Nicks' 1991 compilation album Timespace: The Best of Stevie Nicks, remixed by Chris Lord-Alge and running at 4:59.
    “Stand Back” is performed in the key of B Minor with a tempo of 116 beats per minute in common time. The song follows a chord progression of A/G - G - D/A - A - D/A - G/B - Bm - A/B - B/D - G, and Nicks’ vocals span from A3 to B4.[5][6]

The TV show "Blackish" did a beautiful tribute to Prince in an episode. Each character did their rendition of his music videos and if i remember corfectly they sang the songs too.
I highly recommend checking that out should you have the means.

Prince is right up there with Lennon/McCartney. with his songwriting chops, is known as a genius guitar player, & his vocals are right up there with the best of them. IMO he should be remembered as maybe the most talented musician ever. I am older, & my tases vary. The closest artist I can come up with that compares to Prince would be Hank Williams Sr.
