  • A documentary produced by the Diocese of Allentown about Father Walter Ciszek.
Father Walter Ciszek was born Nov. 4, 1904, in Shenandoah. He was ordained in 1937 as the first American Jesuit in the Byzantine Catholic Rite. He became a Jesuit missionary to Russia and was held captive in Soviet prison camps for 23 years until he was returned to the U.S. in a spy exchange in 1963.
The Father Walter Ciszek Prayer League, based in Shenandoah, was formed in 1985 to promote the cause of Sainthood for the priest. The cause was formally opened in 1989. His cause has reached the stage that it is currently being reviewed in the Vatican.

I'm not Polish, but Let's recognize here the outstanding strength of Polish Catholicism. Fr Walter Ciszek, like Pope JPII - another hero from the Polish Culture. God bless Poland.

Unbelievably brave Polish-American priest. May Almighty God takes care of his Soul and repose him to heaven!

Amazing story. The courage of the Saints is astounding. Looking forward to reading his books. From the days when the Jesuits believed the Catholic Faith.
“A secret army of babushkas”! Love it.

I learned of Father Ciszek from Fr Michael Schmitz podcast. I'm intrigued by the fact that I found a documentary posted to the Allentown Diocese.

Same here! I even just received his book, “He leadeth me” suggested by Fr. Mike.

I recommend both of Walter Ciszeks books, He Leadeth Me (his spiritual journey), and WIth God in Russia (more like a biography of sorts). He Leadeth Me is the best spiritual book I've ever read. Truly amazing.

His life story is quite unreal or should I say surreal.....Upon entering Russia, his Bible, Missal and religious items of worship would of being confiscated. That’s a hard call! Not only was there very hard conditions a head of him but also the lack of correspondence between him and his family back home, kind of completely shut from the world. So hard to believe that a person could survive against such odds.
