  • The Shroud of Turin is the subject of a lot of rumors, myths, and controversies - maybe you’ve heard some of them yourself and don’t know what to believe.
That’s why this week we have Fr. Robert Spitzer, a Jesuit scientist and scholar on the Shroud of Turin. He offers some amazing facts about the Shroud, including what we can learn about the Crucifixion from what we see on the cloth. We also talk about the infamous carbon dating claims (they’ve been scientifically debunked).
If you’ve ever wondered how seriously we can take the Shroud of Turin, you have to see this episode!

When my father died, my sister asked how on earth I could hold onto my faith when God allows such suffering. So I told her about the Shroud of Turin, which has, at times, bolstered my faith enormously. She was interested, but absolutely convinced when, the very next day, a book on the Shroud of Turin arrived in the mail, sent 2 weeks earlier by a friend of mum's living overseas. Yet another of those holy coincidences that have been such a blessing throughout my life. Incidentally, mum had always had a strong devotion to the holy shroud, and was the first person to tell me about it when I was about 13.

When the negative radiocarbon dates came out in the late 80s, it certainly did not destroy my faith. But the subsequent rebuttal of those findings and the links between the shroud and other Eucharistic miracles brings great joy to my faith.

It's not at all that "God allows such suffering." Man brought suffering down on himself by his own free choice to disobey God in the Garden by taking and eating. Blaming God for man's suffering is sinful in itself... it's just a way of saying, and teaching other's to say, "I am unjustly held accountable for my disobedience to God." Adam was forewarned of the consequences, and purposely went against God. Otherwise, you're blaming God for your own sinful nature.

Theologians prove doctorates are granted based on nothing whatsoever.
Christians simply insist we follow their directions from fantasyland, adopt their vocabulary, because Christians have zero quality-control.
Imperial Rome made this cult so every Alex Jones in the country knows enough to put Jesus-lingo in the sales-pitch.
There is always peril when pointing out reality to Christians.
Christians simply insist we follow their directions from fantasyland, adopt their vocabulary, because Christians have zero quality-control.
Imperial Rome made this cult so every Alex Jones in the country knows enough to put Jesus-lingo in the sales-pitch.
Christians boast their lack of quality-control.
The same god we know for a perfect record of doing nothing,

Why would anyone confess Jesus Christ as Lord,
      when voting is a quality-control?
      Republicans rig the voting districts.
The SCOTUS writes of its own stench.
Christians are avoided like the old woman with too many cats,

Why do you think every Alex Jones in the country,

      Christians boast having no quality-control.

is how fast the knee hits the floor when a donor walks in the room.
There is no plan, not for greenhouse gases, as long as energy is needed to keep the show on the road.
Christians demand ownership of the narrative: We are all gods, children of the highest god.
      The ultimate vanity is declared,
as they make a scene in the temple.
Christians are the wolves in sheep's clothing,
weighing in on whatnot as if Earth had gravity-free zones,
would-be dictators suggesting we must all travel together,
as if we all prefer leadership with one foot in fantasyland.
We know a tree by the fruit.
We know a man by his works.
We thank God secular law & order
finally ended the witch-killings & inquisitions.
Jesus Christ says a wicked generation seeks signs,
then the Christians: Self-authorized experts on deity-stuff,
      dictate what is sacred,
      holy scripture,
      having magic in every chapter.
      The problem is ignoring Christians.
Those act as if the rest of us can prefer leadership traveling with one foot in fantasyland.
God chooses winners in their end time cult.
      Their god outside of fiction,
is the same god well-known for the perfect record of doing nothing.
Hence, we say, God helps those helping themselves.
And, Christians are avoided like the old woman with too many cats.
      And, we thank God:
Secular law & order eventually ended the witch-killing & inquisitions.
There is no evidence Democracy works at scale.
Not with endless wars, & too big to fail.
The science of greenhouse gases was ignored.
Now, is "too late" - 1979.
Biden just opened up places to drill, as if Limits to Growth had not predicted our worst path.
The only difference between a Republican & Democrat is how fast the knee hits the floor,
when a donor walks in the room.
Some are so insane, they share other people's delusions. We can't talk about how deep the problem is. The big problem is the Christian communicating as if his self-authorized opinions allowed for his weighing-in on whatnot, as if the Earth had gravity-free zones. It discloses the presentation is a fraud created by those in delusion, those willing to ignore credibility, to publicly insult intelligence with suggestions we travel with one foot in fantasyland. The Christian, authorized by himself, is routinely permitted to weigh-in on whatnot, as if the earth had gravity-free zones. The Gospels, being a joke, have their master say a wicked generation seeks signs. Then, the Christian declares sacred text, with a sign in every chapter. Even Mary is a slur. Can't have too many Mary' in a story. Even Alex Jones knows to use Jesus-lingo, they will buy anything. But wait, there's more. The Christian has a divine sense of vanity. We are all gods, Children of the Highest. Jesus is never depicted as short, fat & balding. He has extra long arms on the shroud so even in death, the Christian can admire his modesty.

What is the big deal about Jesus blood sacrifice, eh? If my scourge, ill treatment, crucifixion and death would save all mankind for all eternity, I'd gladly give my life right now. Today. Happily. And if I knew for sure God existed and paradise awaited me it would make it even easier.
The sad thing is, some completely innocent mortals have suffered fates much worse than Jesus without knowing God and without becoming the hero/savior of all mankind.
Apparently God/Jesus knew this all would happen even before creation. Then He sat on His throne and watched it all happen in real time and in His name.

      - [ ] I am ashamed that the current leadership of the Church does not make it clear the shroud is a fake. They hide behind the obscurity of terms like “icon”
      * The shroud is also contrary to the description in the Gospel. Look it up.
“Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus’ head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself.”
      * We have no reliable documentation of the Shroud of Turin’s existence until the fourteenth century.
      * The forger who made the Shroud of Turin confessed and the earliest definitive mention of the shroud in any historical source is a record of his confession.
      * The Shroud of Turin doesn’t match the kinds of funerary wrappings used in Judaea in the time of Jesus or the description of Jesus’s own funerary wrappings given in the Gospel of John.
      * The linen of the Shroud of Turin has been securely dated using radiocarbon dating to between c. 1260 and c. 1390 AD-well over a millennium after Jesus’s death.
      * The figure on the Shroud of Turin does not have anatomically correct proportions and much more closely resembles figures in fourteenth-century Gothic art than a real human being.
      * The bloodstains on the Shroud of Turin are not consistent with how blood actually flows naturally and they instead appear to have been painted on.
      * The fabric of the Shroud of Turin is made with a kind of weave that is known to have been commonly used during the Late Middle Ages, but does not seem to have been used for burial shrouds in Judaea in the first century AD.

It really is of no importance nor consequence as to whether or not his height, complexion, eye colour or hair length matters.....All of our Lady's apparitions have been depicted as being that of similar features of that nation of people.

But while we are playing this game, tell me why your God has stopped communicating, and not least, why He failed to communicate with the millions of people he destroyed during the flood. Wouldn’t it have been a nice gesture if He at least had made His presence known to all the other countries on earth BEFORE he called them “wicked” enough to destroy?

I went to Jerusalem in December. I went to the Garden Tomb on the first day and was blown away by its lovely atmosphere, there was a crowd outside the tomb singing hymns, it was very uplifting. Anyway I went back 2 days later and I had nearly the whole place to myself, I went into the tomb on my own and closed my eyes to pray, almost immediately a clear, crisp and perfect image of the image of the face on the Turin Shroud appeared on the back of my eye lids, I was shocked and opened my eyes feeling a little perturbed but not in any way afraid. It was several seconds until I realised where I was and the connection to the image. Later I questioned myself about it and I know I hadn't thought about the image at all before I went there, I mean I was aware of the Shroud and everything but it was not in my thoughts at all that day and probably not at all on the trip either.
Now I am not claiming anything about the Garden Tomb but I swear on my life that I saw what I said and I tell you I had never seen an image or 'vision' like that or had a silhouette on my eye lids as clear as that in my entire 48 years of life. Thanks be to God.

The question has always been about how long energy would keep things going. That is why Bye-Done opened up the tiny oil fields. Peak oil was in 2006 as far as we know, & we are not to know easily. Anyone can now take 4 minutes reviewing the arctic sea ice record & guess large mammals will be extinct within a decade, 2026 even. In 1979 the POTUS report calls 2025 "too late". The consequences from greenhouse gases would be reaching crisis & there was nothing we could do at scale. Print money at ramming, full speed ahead.

I am a graduate and scholar from the University of Oxford United Kingdom, ranking # 1 in the world as we stand, and I have a masters degree, and Professor in Theology, Divinity & Religious Studies for over 30 years, I understand the original Hebrew, also to include a scholarship in the Traditional Greek( KOINE) language in which Paul spoke and understood. Oxford is one of the oldest Universities that date back to the year 1096 after Christ.
The Shroud of Turin is not mentioned in the Bible. It is a linen sheet thought by many to be the burial cloth of Jesus Christ. As a result of this belief, the shroud is considered by some to be one of Christendom’s most sacred relics. A cathedral in Turin, Italy, now houses the shroud in a high-tech protective casing.
Do Bible accounts support the idea that the Shroud of Turin is genuine? No.
Consider three aspects of the shroud that differ from what the Bible says.
      1. The shroud is a single cloth measuring 442 by 113 centimeters (14 ft 6 in. by 3 ft 8 in.) plus an 8-centimeter (3 in.) strip sewed lengthwise.
What the Bible says: Jesus’ dead body was wrapped, not in one piece of linen, but in multiple strips of cloth. His head was wrapped in a separate cloth. After Jesus was resurrected, one of his apostles came to the empty tomb and “saw the linen cloths lying there.” The Bible adds: “The cloth that had been on his head was not lying with the other cloth bands but was rolled up in a place by itself.”-John 20:6, 7.
      2. The shroud contains markings presumed to be bloodstains from an unwashed corpse.
What the Bible says: When Jesus died, his disciples prepared his body “according to the burial custom of the Jews.” (John 19:39-42) This custom included washing the corpse and applying oils and spices to it before burial. (Matthew 26:12; Acts 9:37) Therefore, Jesus’ disciples would have washed his body before wrapping it in cloths.
      3. The shroud bears the image of a man “laid lengthwise along one half of the shroud while the other half had been doubled over the head to cover the whole front of the body,” according to the Encyclopædia Britannica.
What the Bible says: Jesus’ disciples discussed his death, his empty tomb, and the eyewitness testimony of women who saw “a supernatural sight of angels, who said he is alive.” (Luke 24:15-24) If the shroud had been in Jesus’ tomb, his disciples would no doubt have discussed it and the images on it. However, the Bible says nothing about such a discussion.
      Should the shroud be venerated?
No. Even if it were authentic, venerating it would still be wrong. Consider Bible principles that explain why.
      1. It is unnecessary. Jesus explained: “God is a Spirit, and those worshipping him must worship with spirit and truth.” (John 4:24) True worship does not involve the use of religious relics or icons.
      2. It is forbidden. The Ten Commandments forbid idolatry. (Deuteronomy 5:6-10) Likewise, the Bible commands Christians: “Guard yourselves from idols.” (1 John 5:21) Some might argue that for them the shroud is not an idol but an icon, or symbol, of their religious faith. However, an icon becomes an idol to the person who venerates it. Therefore, a person who wants to please God will not show devotion or reverence to any object, including the shroud.
      Scientific analysis of the shroud
Since the late 19th century, researchers have tried to use scientific methods to test the authenticity of the shroud. Some of these tests have proven inconclusive. However, in 1988, the Vatican submitted small samples taken from the shroud to three laboratories in different countries. After the laboratories subjected the samples to radiocarbon dating, each one concluded that the shroud was from the 13th or 14th century.

It is obvious that you did not watch the video. He answers several of your criticisms. The multiple cloths is stressed by him about the cloth of Oviedo. The radiometric dating is debunked because they did not use standard scientific practice to test multiple sites on the shroud. Instead they took only a thread from a restored piece of the cloth which had cotton added to it (the shroud is pure linen). The part they tested also had been subjected to burning. They hid these results for 27 years, and when the raw data was finally released, it was obvious why they withheld it all these years. More modern tests, if you had actually watched the video, show it to be from the first century. He mentions the age and confidence levels in the video. Please watch the video and stop spreading your ignorance as a Professor of 30 years.

@@TruthTalkDave The professed Christian writers of the third and fourth centuries, many of whom wrote about a host of so-called miracles in connection with numerous relics, do not mention the existence of a shroud containing the image of Jesus. Some claim that the shroud had been hidden during all these years. Still, even after the supposed burial shroud of Jesus had been “discovered,” according to seventh-century writers, there is no mention of an image on it. Shroud advocate P. A. Beecher lists a considerable number of individuals who saw the shroud between the seventh and thirteenth centuries, one who even “kissed it,” and yet not one mentioned the image. This is hard to understand, since 15th- and 16th-century viewers, according to Jesuit scholar Herbert Thurston, “describe the impressions on the shroud as so vivid in detail and colouring that they might have been quite freshly made.”
It was not until 1205 that a French soldier, Robert de Clari, reported seeing “the sindon [shroud] in which our Lord was enveloped . . . stretched upright, so that one could easily see the figure of our Savior.” Concerning this long period of silence, Ian Wilson, a backer of the shroud, asks some very searching questions:
“How could such a fascinating piece of cloth as the Shroud of Turin, if genuine, have gone totally unrecorded over thirteen centuries, suddenly to turn up in fourteenth-century France?
“Could it have been hidden away all the time, due to Jewish and Roman persecution of Christians, followed by the danger to all image-bearing objects during the period of the iconoclastic controversy (725-842)? This was most unlikely.
“There were four hundred years from the conversion of Constantine the Great to the onset of iconoclasm, during which many previously ‘hidden’ relics came to light, including the entire True Cross, the crown of thorns, the nails, the purple cloak, the reed, the stone of the sepulcher, and many others. There was ample opportunity for such an important and unmistakable relic as the Turin Shroud to come to light. Yet there was no record of any such event.”
One cannot but wonder, in view of the significance of this relic, why it took almost 1,200 years before mention was made of the image on it.
      Scientific and Historical Problems
Many theories have come and gone as to how the image was formed. Most scientists agree that the latest findings have shown that the whole image was produced from the same cause, perhaps from some process that “scorched” it.
This scientific conclusion presents some problems, for it indicates that the impression on the shroud should be basically one color, simply varying in intensity. Yet 16th-century viewers indicated that it was made up of two different colors. Not only did artistic reproductions of the time show it multicolored, but one observer, Chifflet, said:
“The figure of Turin shows hardly anything but dark crimson stains, . . . the marks of the wounds seem to be painted in over the impression of the body, which is in a thin pale yellow.”
One could wonder if today’s shroud is the same as the one displayed back in the 14th century and labeled a fraud by the then Roman Catholic bishop Henry de Troyes (France) and said to have been “cunningly painted.” Joseph Hanlon, writing in New Scientist, raises an interesting possibility:
“But could there have been a double fake, one in the 14th century and another in the last century? The shroud was widely shown in the 15th and 16th centuries, but not later. Could it be that the first fraud became too obvious? . . . Might the shroud’s owners have done a better job in that time, using modern technology and medical knowledge, including tests such as Barbet’s, and using ancient linen from the middle east? Might a statue have been created solely for this purpose, heated to give an impression on the cloth, and then destroyed? . . . Nevertheless, there have been a number of sophisticated Victorian archaeological frauds, so we cannot ignore this possibility.”
Others have suggested the use of a mixture of myrrh and aloes rubbed over a bas-relief (a picture with three-dimensional features) to produce a similar image. However, Adam Otterbein, president of the Holy Shroud Guild, concluded: “How the image was formed may be a mystery to the end of time. . . . It’s doubtful whether science will ever be able to prove how this was done.”

then the Christians: Self-authorized experts on deity-stuff,
      dictate what is sacred,
      holy scripture,
      having magic in every chapter.
      The problem is ignoring Christians.
Those act as if the rest of us can prefer leadership traveling with one foot in fantasyland.
God chooses winners in their end time cult.
      Their god outside of fiction,
is the same god well-known for the perfect record of doing nothing.

He has extra long arms on the shroud so even in death, the Christian can admire his modesty.

something else to keep in mind: the blood on the Shroud of Turin is AB-of which only 5% of the world's population have. additionally, the blood type found on the Sudarium of Oviedo (believed to be the facecloth that was used to cover the face of Jesus as He was being taken off the cross) is also AB. the odds of finding the same incredibly rare blood type on 2 ancient pieces of cloth are extremely low. that said, considering this and everything else we know about the Shroud of Turin-both forensically and historically-i personally believe _both_ artifacts are in fact, authentic and genuine to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ!

“The worship of the Church is the gracious gift of God to an insecure, distraught, and confused humanity. It is not as though the material and visible aspect of our worship becomes somehow unspiritual and second-rate when we begin to reflect on the hidden mystery of our faith. The outward and visible signs bring us the reality and the power of the risen Christ, but that reality and that power are displayed, shown forth, made manifest, found, experienced in and through what we see, hear smell, touch and see. The sacramental and liturgical worship of his Church is God’s gift to human beings with bodies and souls. It is God’s gift; and our way back to him is through this worship.”[Jonathan Robinson “The Mass and Modernity” pg. 262]
