What's your preference? Silver Sky SE vs Core version vs Fender vs something with humbuckers 😂?

    • @iandeare1
      @iandeare1 ปีที่แล้ว

A bit of both, but usually buckers, and a one watt valve pre amp for a bit of beef

      @@iandeare1 Can't argue with that combination 👍

My band's music requires a thicker humbucker tone, so I would just use single coils for personal stuff at home. I currently do not have a single coil guitar, but I do have a 2004 Custom 22 that has a nice coil-split tone (PRS is the only brand I have heard that has a convincing single coil sound when splitting)

Great guitar, I would get this rather than the Strat for my single coil guitar. Quality wise, great pickups and good Gig bag this is what my hard earned bucks will get!

Call PRS customer service regarding the knob. My selector tip broke and they sent me a replacement for free (I'm in the US). They may not be as accommodating since you are in the UK, but it's worth a try.

PRS offers locking tuners for the Silver Sky SE. Here in the states they are $120. By the way - the Core radius is 7.25" and the SE is 8.5". I was not comfortable at all with the Core radius, so I sold it. I ended up going through 2 more (we all have the disease), because I loved the pickups so much. But I sold those too. I'm contemplating an SE, but need to hear the pickups. There is one small store in my town that is a PRS dealer and they always sell the 2 or 3 SE's they order.

You can buy SE locking tuners in the UK as well.

I got to play the original Silver Sky (when they still had hard shell cases) at the factory in 2018. I did not like it at all. The neck was too big and the pickups were tinny and weak to me. Fast forward to the beginning of 2022, and I got a Moon White SE model. I signed up as soon as I knew they were available and was the first person on Sweetwater's list for one, so it shipped that first week and I got my choice of color. Yes, it looks as yellow in person as online. [I've got a DGT SE coming, same story.] Like you, I took it out that night and I plugged it in direct for open mic. No pedals, just my Blues Jr IV with the fat switch on. Did I like it? It's hanging behind me as I type, so yes, I did. Did I have the same issue(s) as you? Some of them, yes. [ If you look for: PRS SE Silver Sky maiden voyage #2... you'll find footage] I took it out the night I got it in and played it in Virginia Beach. It played well, and if you jump a minute or so into the video, you'll see I really like PRS (look at the tattoo on my left forearm).
I thought the action was high out of the box and the bridge floated more than I would like. I'm tempted to deck it, but I haven't yet, and it's been nearly a year. Still the guitar is great, and I really do prefer it to the core. Do I think it's "better"? No, that's subjective, but I prefer it for me and my style of playing. I did take the back plate off and stick it in the front pocket of the bag, but that was because I am still not done adjusting the springs. Plus, it's easier to do string changes with that dang thing off.
To be frank, I'm a Gibson guitar guy, but this axe scratches that 3 single coil, 25-1/2" scale length itch. I have a great Telecaster too, because... guitars. LOL... If someone was to ask me, "should I get the Silver Sky SE?" I would ask, "Why?" If they want that Strat thing without buying a Fender and want to be different, sure. If you're looking for consistency and truly Strat-ty sounds (as you showed in your demo and I in my live videos) then yeah, this is a great option. If you're interested in new colors, don't be surprised to see some this year. The moon white is getting more rare, so that might be close to being replaced. I would think the two on a deepest sale would be the first colors to get replaced, at least in the short term.
[Now for my shameless plug] If you get a chance, give my channel a sub. I'm trying to hit 1,000; and have left you a like and sub as well as a comment (that I hope to generate more comments). Smaller channels have to help each other. [end of my shameless plug]

Got a SS SE over Christmas and the knobs don’t have any wobble? Swapped out the pickguard with a pearl one as well 🤟🏼. Love this guitar!! It’s great!

About the 10:34 and 11:11 mark, I love the sound. Very clean. I'm strictly a novice so I'm not sure if it's the amp your using or the guitar. I really like that tone!

Thanks John. It's probably a combination of the two :-)

I've had mine almost a year a silver sky SE Moon White I love it got the action nice and low I upgraded the tuners with Kulson Revolution locking tuners they were more or less an exact drop in. The pickup sound great I love the neck profile nice and fat. The vibe of this guitar it's just incredible at the price point it is so much better than the fender player series and I mean the entire Fender player series including the players Plus that cost more. Fenders got some serious quality control issues with their fret work on the player series very rough edges.

I just got the same guitar and also have the wobbly volume knob issue.
curious what sort of action you have on yours? Does your high e string have any fret buzz?
    great video!

I like the Core version but prefer the neck and fret radius on the SE I love using it for funk, brit blues and psychodelic blues with my Epi Lp that has been set up with PAFs and gibson wiring great fun for fingerpicking styles to

Nice review PF! I'm thinking on the JM PRS SE. My second option would be the Fender Player series. My disappointment with the PRS is the color choices - such as no black option. The "off colors" scream lower cost to me. Sounds seem very good though. In the end I'll likely get the Fender since there are MANY aftermarket choices for parts like scratch plates, pickups, etc. if i feel the need to upgrade it. Whomever is reading this, subscribe to ProFunctionist, he really has a lot of Helix ,and guitaring content and I have learned a huge amount from his other episodes.

I do find Fender guitars feel like 'home' to me. So I guess you can't go wrong with a Fender. But let's hope PRS come out with more colour options for the Silver Sky SE. And thanks for the shout out. You rock!

You can bet you'll see more colors soon... Colors always boost interest and interest boosts sales. Since it's been about a year since its inception, once the new SE models like the DGT, McCarty 594, and the like drop in January and those sales scale back, you'll see them hit us with a couple new colors. I would say by summer.

@@jimwoodard64 I would agree. There's already talk of a maple fretboard version in 2023.
