I was rather disappointed with the Fender, but since it was a prize guitar, I couldn't send it back and I felt bad about complaining.

About the plastic... It comes on the raw sheet that they buy to cut out the pick guards. They don't apply the plastic. They just cut through it and leave it on the entire time for protection.

@@kyloren4849 you are responding to months old posts. I was kidding around. Then again I am not sure why this guy has so much gear when he seemingly has a passing hobby. God that guitar sounds like ass. Get a dinged up original one they are like 1200 every few days- with plastic cases it’s happening constantly. I see a dealer that calls them “reliced” lol. 800 bucks is way too much for a 3rd world instrument. I can’t believe this entry level rip off garbage costs more than my USA VG strat did in 08. These prices have gone nuts- PRS never go up in value unless they are like 5k such a bs brand. So shiney so boring. Rip off company buyer beware overpriced hot trash. I keep hearing the same riff over and over might help to learn more than 3. Palm mute sounds like a quarter falling down the stairs- tone strangled 😵. Out of tune as hell. Hell a Mexican strat costs this much now too let’s go branden.
That guitar sounds amazing, in my electrostatic Martin Logan speakers. And there's a clear tonal difference between the five mic positions, there every position has it's own very usable sound. And that's not always the case with some other guitars, not even how much you try to tweak the tone controls.
I was more impressed with the Tone King amp, The PRS SE Slver Sky to me is nothing more than finally getting into the game with the Fender MiM Player Series. And then Fender beat PRS to Player Plus before the PRS SE SS was introduced. I think they get their sales, but to me it's more hype than anything else. If I want a Poplar body, Sterling by Music Man has bee making this instrument for years really, and even in the pandemic inflation era, still making the guitar for 300-500 less at MSRP. Just me, but even a Squier Bullet is going to sound outstanding when played thru a Tone King Imperial $ 2,600 tube amp.
@@erikwilliamsen2830 All of the Tone King amps have power attenuation, from Gremlin to Sky King. I like the Falcon Series, which is now limited to the Falcon Grande 1x12 Combo (the Regular Falcon 1x10 Combo is discontinued, but I could live with that one as a clearance). The Falcon Grande is more my preference of the 4 Tone King Combo amps.
This is the one video that actually made me stop rolling my eyes at this model and start GASing for it. Your demo of all the non-mayerish sounds this thing can make is much more compelling than the umpteen bluesy solos other reviewers have done. Thanks for your refreshing voice + perspective.
I believe Dylan Talks Tone is going to mod his SE! Very cool guitar. I’m not really into Strats but I’d like to try one of these SE models at my local shop.
@@keithbriscoe99 Sort of an aside, through an error, when I bought a guitar from Sweetwater last fall, two were shipped. While working-out the return of the "extra" axe, I, in jest, asked if I could please keep the candy that came with the second, mistakenly shipped, guitar. My sales engineer, Logan Miller, said, "of course." What a win, one guitar, TWO bags of candy (both with the coveted fireball!). I loves me some Sweetwater and Logan. BTW I bought my Fodera YinYang from these guys and they made it easy-peasy!

5:05 Referencing the factory wasn't really a thing before the development of the PRS Santana SE models. Paul wanted to name the manufacturers on the headstock as his opinion was that the people building them were highly skilled at their craft, and that should be acknowledge. The Santana SE models had the name World Music Corportation on the headstock for that reason, and it caused a lot of kickback within the industry. There is a video on the PRS channel describing the design and release of the Santana SE, and hearing Paul speak with such fondness for the people he worked with there while they were refining the prototypes is a lovely thing to see. They have acknowledged all the manufacturing companies for the SE series across the board.
Sweet guitar want/needed one of those for awhile because you know a guitarist needs a new guitar once in awhile even though it a really a want. Any thanks for your videos ryan
I love mine brings back kid days couldn’t afford a Fender so I bought a single pick up Strat style Cort for 100 w a small, Gorilla amp ❤ BTW anytime I watch your videos. I feel like you’re the guy I’m cutting class with back in my high school days ha ha.
Sweetwater does a full set up on every guitar over $299. So yeah im sure they set it up. I think in this case 'demo' meant that this is the one they had out for photos and filming for their own channel.
Massive John Mayer fan. Largely for his records, his songs, his Songwriting. His guitar playing speaks to me on a level I can't describe, but to those of you who either write him off or don't feel the need to explore his work, I'd encourage you to listen to his albums, not just the intro to "Slow Dancing in a Burning Room". "Paradise Valley" could be a good choice. To me, he's just as much a philosopher as he is a guitar player. I think he's a very good lyricist and an expressive, tasteful singer. Despite having a limited range I also think he's a fine arranger and a consumate band leader. I guess that makes him overrated.
Yeah honestly why deny yourself even casually enjoying JM’s music. Like… tell me you don’t feel something listening to “Stop This Train.” “Don’t know how else to say it, don’t want to see my parents go./One generation’s length away from fighting life out on my own.” Come on bro…
Absolutely.. Paradise Valley would be a good starting point.. But personally I'm a huge fan of his Born & Raised album. Every cut on that album is strong, well crafted and impactful. It's where I'd recommend an uninitiated Mayer fan start.
JM haters are kind of posing. Who needs to go out if their way to say they don't like someone. The video title is fine because he bought a signature guitar without being a fan. JM has a huge career because he appeals to women and is a top guitarist. It seems this combination is a problem for the average YT commenter. His guitar skill can't be argued. Some of his songs have become classics. Glad he's around.
I will never get over that fugly headstock on the beautiful strat body. With that said, I really like your reviews and personality you bring to your videos. Keep up the good work!
I saw this on the news this morning. "Man who hates John Mayer vows to play guitar with tampon for eternity." Always entertaining. Good stuff. Thanks. :)
I'm not really a single coil fan, but, that being said, I do feel like I have a hole in my guitar line up. I am, however, a huge PRS fan. I've never played the silver sky, but I have played the Fender. I'm just not a fan of the Fender Non-American models. Since, I don't even know how much I'd actually use it I don't feel like a $2,500 price tag is justified for the Fender American or the PRS Core. I think I'm going to go with the PRS Silver Sky SE. Update: Bought the PRS SE Silver Sky in Moon White. LOVE IT!
Just got my SE today. So far so good.... but a dumb QC issue. The red wire for the jack was wrapped around inside the jack, and it was preventing the lead cord from from being inserted. It took me 30 sec to remove the jack and correct it. But it obviously had not been checked.
Like you I don’t even know what John Meyer plays but I saw them guitars and I wanted one , it’s currently on order waiting for SweetWater to let me know when to expect it :)
I got myself one even tho i only like 1 song of John Mayer and actually never listened to more than 4-5 songs. I tried few PRS John Mayer by chance while i was actualy looking for a new Strat. I wanted to buy an LTD Ultra Strat but then a worker said if i like Strats i should definately try the PRS Strats.. In the end i bought the PRS because it felt nice to play, has a bit "warmer" or a bit "muffled" sound than a Strat, the color is amazing and i already have a Fender USA Strat.
I agree… the sticky plastic is a pain plus it often interferes with the function of the pot controls by making turning the knobs slightly harder ond changing the way they feel.
"...just a hobby player like you..." :-) Well, you certainly have WAY more hobby pedals and hobby amps than I do (I assume you own all that stuff behind you) - which makes me feel better about my non-stop researching and buying stuff. I like what you do, and thanks!!
New subscriber here, great review. I'm really torn whether to buy this $850 PRS silver sky or the full meal deal on at $2649, tough decision. Not being an accomplished guitarist it's tough to make a decision. If you're looking at your older videos it would be great to get your thoughts on this. Thanks for the fun video.
The fret work on these looks so much better than MIM player strats. But if there’s one thing I’ve taken from this review is that I love that reverb pedal! 😁
I have a SE Custom 24 and a player Strat, the frets on my SE are like glass, my Strat frets are fine, but even visually you can see the SE frets have had much more attention. And I'm with you on that reverb, it sounds glorious
I'm not a John Mayer fan either. I bought a Samick Malibu back in 2020 and I decided to hotrod it because if John can so can I! I put a Filtertron in the bridge (real deal), a Seymour Duncan Little 59 in the middle, and a Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder in the neck position. The control lay out is master volume, coil tap for Little 59, and master tone with a Grease Bucket mod on it. Pots are mini Bournes and a Grigsby 5 way switch with a Switchcraft jack. I also upgraded the trem block with a Brass GFS block. It has Grover tuners stock on it. USA ones. I picked up the guitar for under $75 out the door. Its a black with white pickguard. Anywho its a proof of concept that turned out better than expected. Last thing will be a professional bone nut here soon. Honestly its a full scale guitar but the body is smaller like inbetween a Strat and a Duo Sonic. If you want a poor man's Silver Sky, a Malibu is a bit closer to a Strat with a compact body. I will say with all the mods, it got chonky and weighs a bit more than expected.
@@albertplaysguitar The concept is AC/DC Malcolm Young (bridge- Filtertron), Wayne Kramer (middle -Little 59), and the neck is a pickup that is P 90-esque (with a touch of single coil sparkle). Roll the tone back on the neck and sounds very close to a P 90. I do like position 4 with the coil split on the Little 59 because its like a P 90 with extra single coil sparkle. All three pickups are loud and strong and have different magnets (Alnico 2/ceramic/Alnico 5) but they all work very well together and great on their own. I am hitting the 250k pots with lots of signal so the signal is juiced from the get go. This was designed to be an aggressive sounding guitar. I have other guitars that are more traditional and nuanced. This is supposed to be a sonic jack hammer!😎👍💥
@@gringogreen4719 man, that sounds great! I've yet to try a 59er in the middle. I'm very much a mid pickup strat guy. It's my default. But I need it to sound clean-ish when necessary. 🤔
@@albertplaysguitar Being mainly a Tele guy, I have another Squire Stratocaster that is hot rodded but that middle pickup surprised me on how much I liked it. Its a Partscaster with a Squire Korean neck and a "Who Knows?!?!" body. The pickups are all Seymour Duncans and are Twang Banger/ Reversed wound Alnico 2/ and a 5/2 in the neck. All of them sound great but that middle one was pretty much the one I put the least thought into and surprised me how much I liked it. Definitely not the same as a middle Tele sound. I have a Xavier I am going to order here this week. Its getting a dual Filtertron pickguard loaded up into it. I am going to take the stock pickups out of that and load them up into a off brand Strat. Same pickups on Ryan's gold Xavier Strat. Since it will be a calibrated set I am going to be interested to see how that turns out. Originally the Filtertrons were to go into the off brand Strat but once the old pickguard came off the new loaded one did not allign at all. I just decided to go with the pickup swap as mentioned above. Also, a decent reason to get another guitar!🤣😎👍✨
It occurs to me that this is the first Strat clone I’ve ever heard that I don’t think will sound great playing Mark Knopfler tunes. I dunno…maybe I’m wrong, but I know I wouldn’t be feeling it as usual if I were to break out ‘Sultans Of Swing’.
No but you can do a different vibe to the cover. Check out Wild Blue by Mayer, it’s got a very similar chord progression and bounciness to Sultans, but it’s more of an indie vibe to the song.
PRS has said that there will be other colours available in the future. So if you don't mind waiting, there should be more to choose from in the foreseeable future. I just ordered a Stone Blue, but I really like the dragon fruit as well.
The rootbeer barrel has to be better than the Fireball. LOL I always thought Baskin Robbins logo was pink. LOL Cort makes more guitars than any company on earth. They normally have someone else's name on them. That's surprising that the PRS SE actually says what company made it. I'm pretty sure Cort makes all the PRS SE line, G&L Tribute series, Squier CV line, some Epiphones, and some of the Fender limited edition models. Look for the Fender Tele with humbuckers and a maple top. Cort also makes some of the top Harley Benton guitars now. The body and necks are great.

I was rather disappointed with the Fender, but since it was a prize guitar, I couldn't send it back and I felt bad about complaining.
Learn some basic fretworking and dressing and you can buy Squiers and be just as happy.
@@KelticKabukiGirl I did.
@@gathda ohh! Well, I guess I am less picky. The newest video on my half assed for now channel is me shredding a $75 Glarry orange strat I did a light fret polish to and that's it. I don't know if it's because I have been playing since 89 or what, but I like to spend more on pedals than guitars.
Excellent review and shows how different from a Strat it sounds, especially in the second posish, as Gregory Kochery would say. I miss the quack.
About the plastic... It comes on the raw sheet that they buy to cut out the pick guards. They don't apply the plastic. They just cut through it and leave it on the entire time for protection.
Love the pups in the SS SE and that Dragonfruit color is growing on me. Can't wait till I can afford one (maybe by then they will be in stock ~ but the price will have gone up!). Great review ~ thanks!
Was able to get one from reverb, i too dont even like john mayer but the moment i heard these single coils in person i had to have it. Hated the color at first as well, now I absolutely can not take my eyes off of it. I hate that i love this guitar
That bridge pickup has a bit of tele attack, i like it. Keep jamming the surf guitar , not enough people play it on the nets!
Best thumbnail! Love it!
Why does no one ever talk about their collection of gig bags?
Gig bag lives matter!
Hey I think it’s great that from time to time you remind people that you’re just like us, that is the majority of us are people that like Guitars but we are not professionals. We’re somewhere on the big sliding scale of amateurs :-). I love the fact that you play so many clean tones because you love surf guitar.
Brilliant fun review, love all your reviews! Keep it up! 🎶👍🎸
THAT’s! A great review! Planning to get one of these guitars soon! It just is such an attractive guitar in looks and sound. ❤ And you made a great review of it!
how are you liking it? thinking of trading a couple of my lower end guitars for one
Another Strat copy! Just what the world needs..... especially from Indo. Wow!
At twice the price of a G&L, despite G&L using MADE IN USA pickups
You just sold this guitar to me! I was on the fence and I am glad I found your review!
As Johnny Cochran once said, " If it doesn't quack, it's not a Strat" or something like that.
Well damn. My gig bag has a hook, who knew? Thanks man, good review.
I bought the green silversky a couple months back and it is truly a thing of beauty. So many sweet tones
PRS SE are great and punch above their price point.
Definitely.
It's about on-par with $500 G&L guitars
Every video I've watch gave this guitar great reviews. I really thought you were going to find something wrong with it...instead I now want one even more. It's a good thing they're out of stock. LOL
...and this hasn't given you pause for thought at all, has it?
Congratulations! You managed to make that Blue Sky sound fantastic. You didn't overcook the overdrive, so both clean and dirty sounds were beautiful. I'm guessing th intonation was spot-on. Great job!

And that's not always the case with some other guitars, not even how much you try to tweak the tone controls.
thanks for making everything clear since the beginning :)
I just got mine and it fits me like a glove--or as you say "melts into you."
Really nice demo. Easy to write it off as another strat copy but I'm hearing tones that I've not heard from other strats. Nice colour too
even if it was just another strat, who cares? most brands have strat variations.
I really like the stone blue, but am really hyped for the root beer barrels.
LOL
Great review. Positive but not just plain gushing over it. Appreciate it.
We can't deny that these are great looking and great sounding guitars. That being said the neck on these is THICCCCCCCC.
I really think that Tone King is basically a flawless amp. If I had a spare 2600 laying around, I’d have one.
It’s Black Raspberry ice cream. Your playing is fine. It’s unrehearsed, just like what most of us would play.
Nice unboxing and review! Your beard game is ON POINT, my dude!
I've found one gets EITHER the root beer barrel OR the fireball, but NOT BOTH! In these environs, the fireball is preferred...
Root beer barrel all the way 🍺
i just got a root beer barrel and enjoyed it, but I do like me some fireballs! Ha... what a great comment thread!
My favorite Sweetwater candy is the honey one (edit: Bit O Honey)
@@keithbriscoe99 Sort of an aside, through an error, when I bought a guitar from Sweetwater last fall, two were shipped. While working-out the return of the "extra" axe, I, in jest, asked if I could please keep the candy that came with the second, mistakenly shipped, guitar. My sales engineer, Logan Miller, said, "of course." What a win, one guitar, TWO bags of candy (both with the coveted fireball!). I loves me some Sweetwater and Logan. BTW I bought my Fodera YinYang from these guys and they made it easy-peasy!
That vibrato you have dialed in there is awe inspiring.
Love your reviews, Ryan 👍
You have a great way of describing what you’re experiencing as you go along.
Best prs ever imo. I honestly am not a prs fan and really loved playing the silver sky se. Didnt want to stop playing. Really dont want to go get one. But........
Finally a guitar TH-camr not going googoo gaga over John Mayer. Thank you!!
It’s refreshing, isn’t it? I’ve never understood the appeal of that guy.
Give credit where credit is due. He is a respected musician. It's not about him, it's about his fingers and brain.

Sweet guitar want/needed one of those for awhile because you know a guitarist needs a new guitar once in awhile even though it a really a want. Any thanks for your videos ryan
I had a set of GFS Texas Premiums in a Mexican strat once and I swear those pickups really remind me of those.
#4 position! I love it. I just ordered this guitar!!!

Cor-Tek is famous for building high quality guitars.
I would put it on a guitar too.
I love mine brings back kid days couldn’t afford a Fender so I bought a single pick up Strat style Cort for 100 w a small, Gorilla amp ❤ BTW anytime I watch your videos. I feel like you’re the guy I’m cutting class with back in my high school days ha ha.
Wow, the color fits well with your surf blue amp.
Sweetwater does a full set up on every guitar over $299. So yeah im sure they set it up. I think in this case 'demo' meant that this is the one they had out for photos and filming for their own channel.
@@60CycleHumcast I must correct this item, Sweetwater sent me an $1100 Fender Vintera with NO SETUP.
Ryan, great review. Don't change! Some guitarists just flash through scale after scale, and maybe I'm weird, but it doesn't sound like music?
What link Wray song was that around 30:55?
Man SAME , i didn't like John Mayers music except some songs , but yesterday i went to a store and picked it up and It just felt right , so good !!!!
Despite having a limited range
I also think he's a fine arranger and a consumate band leader. I guess that makes him overrated.
Yeah honestly why deny yourself even casually enjoying JM’s music. Like… tell me you don’t feel something listening to “Stop This Train.”
“Don’t know how else to say it, don’t want to see my parents go./One generation’s length away from fighting life out on my own.” Come on bro…
I am a guitar player of over 30 years. Session player or not, you are a fine guitarist my friend. ;)
I recently got a stone blue one. I love it. Excellent review. Thanks.
I will never get over that fugly headstock on the beautiful strat body. With that said, I really like your reviews and personality you bring to your videos. Keep up the good work!
Prs headstock is so fn ugly
@@tomvice yeah it’s like a cheap Walmart headstock on a lawyer guitar.
Looks great !
I had an "interesting" experience with that guitar... check all the details here: th-cam.com/video/XXNJae5Lzmk/w-d-xo.html
I saw this on the news this morning.
"Man who hates John Mayer vows to play guitar with tampon for eternity."
Always entertaining. Good stuff. Thanks. :)
Yes got to get my hands on one of these.
LOVE IT!
A big neon 60 cycle hum sign would look awesome on the blue wall to your left 👌🏻
Just got my SE today. So far so good.... but a dumb QC issue. The red wire for the jack was wrapped around inside the jack, and it was preventing the lead cord from from being inserted. It took me 30 sec to remove the jack and correct it. But it obviously had not been checked.
I absolutely love that colour. Also not a John Mayer fan, though I respect his skill.
"Oh yeah, that feels nice and firm" I hope that's what she said!
Like you I don’t even know what John Meyer plays but I saw them guitars and I wanted one , it’s currently on order waiting for SweetWater to let me know when to expect it :)
Did you ever get it?
I hate having to pop the tone knob off to get the plastic off.
When my company sells a guitar we score around pots (before installing knobs) and jack and switches with an exacto. Plastic comes off super easy.
"...just a hobby player like you..." :-) Well, you certainly have WAY more hobby pedals and hobby amps than I do (I assume you own all that stuff behind you) - which makes me feel better about my non-stop researching and buying stuff. I like what you do, and thanks!!
neck didnt shift. check the saddles, strings slipped on them 7:40
New subscriber here, great review. I'm really torn whether to buy this $850 PRS silver sky or the full meal deal on at $2649, tough decision. Not being an accomplished guitarist it's tough to make a decision. If you're looking at your older videos it would be great to get your thoughts on this. Thanks for the fun video.
Is there an option for a CBS era big head stock?
A nice, thorough review
The guitar looks like a smoothie. In a good way. Tasty.
The fret work on these looks so much better than MIM player strats. But if there’s one thing I’ve taken from this review is that I love that reverb pedal! 😁
That's funny my player strat frets are perfect and so is my son's player strat
I love me a lil59er in the bridge position! Don't really care much for a traditional single coil in the bridge UNLESS it's my Tele 😎
@@albertplaysguitar
The concept is AC/DC Malcolm Young (bridge- Filtertron), Wayne Kramer (middle -Little 59), and the neck is a pickup that is P 90-esque (with a touch of single coil sparkle).
@@albertplaysguitar
Being mainly a Tele guy, I have another Squire Stratocaster that is hot rodded but that middle pickup surprised me on how much I liked it.
Poplar in general is pretty good sounding, w just a little upper highs being muffled. I'd like an A/B w a Maryland made one.
Wood type barely influences tone on electric guitars. Acoustics, yes.

I think those are really cool. I just really wish they had more traditional color options.
The cream color is probably the most traditional color in this line.
@@60CycleHumcast Yeah, that one's not too bad. I think if I were to get one, that'd be the one.
This!!! The cream is honestly the only one I could handle owning. lol Call me boring.
PRS has said that there will be other colours available in the future. So if you don't mind waiting, there should be more to choose from in the foreseeable future.
I just ordered a Stone Blue, but I really like the dragon fruit as well.
Look at G&L's strat copies out of Indonesia
Do you have any long term thoughts on the Silver sky. Looking to purchase my first electric
Mayers breathy singing gives me the runs.
