I bought a 2023 BSA Gold Star 650 - A Modern Classic

  • I am supposed to be eating humble pie right about now, turns out my perfect purchase is causing me some slight stress increase by leaking coolant and oil.
    Also having issues changing gear up from first to second, it just jumps into Neutral and stays there, it stalls at junctions, on cornering it feels like the injection system doesn't fire well, sometimes it starts, others it takes ages and cranks and cranks, I have had the battery go flat overnight. All faults reported to my local dealer who when I explained each issue the service rep had a little giggle over the phone at my expense, plus nearly a month in order to get the bike into their workshop, Great!
    This does not mean I HATE the Gold Star, it has been a stressful start to our relationship I will admit.
    I may need to realign my expectations of this modern classic.
    Went to some effort to buy a good bike. One owner from new, full service history, low miles, HPI check, all the right things.
    Arrived home soaked through (not the bikes fault) and during the wet ride it make me determined to look over this motorcycle and see if maybe its faults are caused during production.
    This is the video I made on my first test ride of a BSA, things didn't go very well: • Things I hate about th...
    How exactly is my first review and now ownership in such stark contrast to online influencers..?
    So I thought i'd put my money where my mouth is and buy a BSA, then I can share my experience and eat some humble pie and enjoy the ride.
    Maybe just daydreaming and should sell this motorcycle quickly.
    I truly hope things will only get better after the warranty work as I am now part of the BSA family!
    Anyways, this motorcycle has warranty, its all good...

    It’s like anything you buy you can get a bad one, it’s luck of the draw, it’s under warranty so take it back. I bought a 2004 Kawasaki zx10r, had to return it because of dodgy handlebars clamps and a recall for a front wheel but 20 years on the bike runs like it did from day one so no reason to pull a manufacturer down, it may take time to sort it but insure they will.

    they come as standard with a good toolkit, but you have to borrow an allen key! Your bike has certainly had a number of previous owner mods, irrespective of its low miles. Good luck with what are minor niggles potentially caused by the first owners mods, but your post certainly attracts the haters. I've ridden mine on some atrocious roads this winter, gravel in the wet and find it very confidence inspiring. Its early days for the new brand. I wish them well, we're in a major recession here and the first batch all sold out quickly and the second batch. Will be interesting to see how they go in India where RE have fierce brand loyalty. You brits got the first ones and the company is making these bikes in tiny numbers until they establish into the bigger markets like India, North America and Australia. I love my BSA GS 650 after 6000 miles. If the bike is leaking fluids and it has had the health check, sounds like a dealer error. The washer on the reserve oil tank may not have been replaced/nipped up properly. Coolant leak sounds odd, but may be from the same service issue. My bike handles well,if a little slow steering, check tyre pressures and crank up the preload on rear shocks to suit your riding.

    • @MotoTingle
      @MotoTingle  8 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi Bill. This perfectly encapsulates what I am meeting with owners, their bikes are okay, perfect and trouble free. But for the rest of us we have defects in the machines. We have extended wait times for warranty and extended wait times on parts that are on back order. - I did check the oil tank O-ring on mine as its a known issue. What I am seeing is a percentage of bikes that are produced badly, so if it were a confectionary bar, how many defective chocolate bars does it take to do a recall? One in five? One in five hundred? - Its a logistical nightmare for BSA I am sure. I suspect this isn’t the end of my troubles as the bike had been off the road now since i got it home with an even bigger issue which i am editing, plus I have been sure to show owners what to look for before their bike succumbs to the exact same fault. - I really wish this BSA was reliable like yours.

      Your screen has been put on wrong. It should have the brackets mounted within headlight . Have you checked the 22mm bolt on back of the engine, they are prone to be loose and the oil leaks down the side stand onto the floor. Make sure the dealer you bought it from has done the health check.

    • @MotoTingle
      @MotoTingle  9 วันที่ผ่านมา

      This is a very common statement that "its under warranty". I think from an owner’s perspective, trying to achieve warranty is the issue. An example is my local dealer had over 4 weeks waiting just to get your bike into their workshop. And I am seeing even longer waiting times, its all multi franchise dealers but you’d think they would expand their workshops if they were so busy, so to test this, I booked in my sons Kawasaki. 7 days! That’s right Seven days and his Kawasaki is into exactly the same workshop. My BSA I get to wait a month. Seeing this mentioned online where workshops are prioritising their workload to favour whatever they like most. So today ill do a phone around and see if this is true for dealers further away. - Again, from an owners perspective, you have a fault (could happen to any brand) then you get an extended wait for warranty. Plus I was told this bike has had its recall but he didn’t have any paperwork as the dealerships are all putting it online. So now im "did he tell me the truth?", to be fair, he was a nice guy, hasn’t lied about anything else. I would like this ownership experience to improve, lets see how it goes
