[RE-UPLOAD] Thinking about to change the pickups in an Ibanez? Watch this first

  • In this video I show you how I changed my guitar pickups.
    Ibanez has its own switch system which it is very different from the traditional ones. It varies according to the guitar model. In this particular guitar, the 5 way switch is the 3SWLGSC model. So I had to figure out how to connect the new pickups in order to keep the factory pickup configuration. That is what I want to share with you.
    The new pickups are from Dart Frog and you can check their instagram profile for more models and information: @dartfrog_pickups
    This video was re-uploaded due to a copyright claim.
    Thank you for visiting my channel! I appreciate your support!
    What I use in this video:

    Very helpful video, thank you so much. Made the process very easy (My first ever pickup swap) went for Iron Gear Steam Hammers and they are SUPERB.

    Nice video! It would also be interesting to listen to the guitar before the pickup change!

    This is probably the best video I've seen on installing new pickups in an Ibanez with a 5-way, and good call on the helping hands... made soldering a lot easier. One of your comments said you needed to re-wire something because one of the pickups was out of phase. Do you remember what that was? I probably made the same mistake and I'm not sure how to fix it. I have an RG521 with the same switch as the video. Currently wired with green/bare to ground, red/white to coil split, black to hot. Pickups are Duncans, but it looks like the wire colors are the same as the Dart Frogs you installed. Toggle positions 1, 3, and 5 are all good and position 2 is ok, but position 4 sounds really thin and maybe half the volume of the others.

      Wow! Thank you so much for your comment! In my case, I found that red/white link (the series link) of the Neck pickup was the problem. Probably because of the switch circuit, but I am not sure. The Bridge pickup was ok. But what I did to solve that was to detach the red/white link and attach the black to the white, so the red became the "HOT". That did the trick in my case. Best of luck!

    Excellent video, right to the point. I'm tackling this job right now but may go another route. SSH prewired plate for a Strat. The pickups on this guitar are crap but the neck makes it worth the effort to save it.

    Awesome, thanks so much. I wish I would have replaced mine. I recently lowered the acting, put on 9# strings, and changed the nut, which all really helped. I just ordered some Seymour Duncans. Turned a $400 guitar into a better playing $700 guitar now. That will be all I do. Next will be an entire guitar upgrade but why not make what you have the best it can be. I do love my Ibanez but have hated the tone and playability. It's getting there. Not everything can be fixed with a "plug-in":-)

      @@tonymarshall9662 They're in, took all of 20 minutes! Most of that was removal of the old pickups just to get my head around the wiring. Super easy, still got the working coil splits too. It was on a GRG121EX. Blown away by the sound, I wasn't expecting Seymour Duncan levels of chug! Amazing clarity too using distortion. The single coil bridge setting sounds really nice, almost a p90 sound. Both humbuckers are well balanced. Really impressed with these pickups so might have to get some more for my other guitars.

    If you want to play metal, the ibz 6 and quantum are better and if you want to play rock, punk rock or pop punk the infinity is the best option for it.

    sir do you gave the diagrap for what you did? i am planning to upgrade as well but i dont know how to wire the other pickups that has 5 or 6 wires on them, the stock ibanez ibz 6 pickups only has 3 wires on them, white red and bare. ive noticed on your video youve combined some of the wires but its not that clear. do you have a diagram if the pickups to be installed has 5 or 6 wires on them? what to combine or whatnot? thanks

    • @thatguitarstuff
      @thatguitarstuff  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello my friend. Unfortunately I don’t have any diagrams. All that I figured out is in the video. About the wires you can find excellent videos in TH-cam explaining how to identify them. Keep in mind that different guitar models may have different wiring. Good luck!

    What do the red and white cables do? I want to install an Seymour duncan pickup and dont know if i should connect the red and white cables or not.

    • @thatguitarstuff
      @thatguitarstuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi! The explanation is a bit long to put in here, but Seymour Duncan has a great free online course about how to change pickups and how to connect the wires. In fact it works for any pickup brand. Check this out: th-cam.com/video/5WONPIkfHDE/w-d-xo.html
      Also the way I made the connections are valid ONLY for this specific switch model, so if that's not your case you should not try it.

    So... the active-style pickups and the humbuckers are the same size? I was wondering that before buying this guitar.

    Looking to do this with my GRGR221PA. Followed easily until you resoldered the leads. Are the "hots" the same on both the bridge and neck sides? I saw the black on the neck side but it looked like you had the red as hot on the bridge side.

    • @thatguitarstuff
      @thatguitarstuff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi there! I really made some mistakes and ended up with one pickup out of phase… had to redo the solder. So don’t follow the wire colors in my video, follow only the positioning of the wires in the switch and you’ll be fine.

    Excuse me, can the ibz-6 covers be reused on other pickups? Or I would like to know if you can put another cover that is not the same

    • @thatguitarstuff
      @thatguitarstuff  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! No they can’t, it’s not possible to take that covers off. But you can buy separate covers if you want.

    can you remove the stock ibanez pick up covers from the old ones and put it in the new pickups or not?

    the neck pickup is upside down. the screw side of the pickups go to the outside. so to the neck and to the bridge.

    F-spaced pickups? I know that's not a Floyd but ibanez have wide spacing.

    • @thatguitarstuff
      @thatguitarstuff  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No, they aren’t. I don’t know about other fixed bridges, but this one is not as wide as a Floyd-type bridge (compared to my Kramer equipped with a Floyd Rose Special).
