- In today's video we're going to unseal books that have never before been opened. They haven't even made it out of their original packaging.
The items I show are part of a small collection of rare Tolkien items I recently took in for sale. For more details of this collection, visit my website: www.tomwayling.co.uk/category...
Oh, you lucky man!
Such a thrill to be the first one to set their eyes on something!
I knew I liked a book, but since watching you, I now understand the pure love of a beautiful book. Wow.
I’m so lucky I bought the Christopher Tolkien inscribed the hobbit from your last video. Can’t wait to have it in my hands Tom!!
You are blessed! Enjoy this treasure, is amazing!
@@klaire74as soon as I saw it in his video, just had to contact him. I’m a big Tolkien collector and this is something I don’t have.
So glad it's yours!
I rejoice with you! We bibliophiles, especially those of us who dearly love JRR Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien’s works, are a community who are happy with each other’s finds. It is thrilling to see these rare books!
Tom, thank you so much for sharing. You must have had goosebumps when you shared these as you opened the boxes. I am thrilled that you shared these with us!
Oh dear, I’m drooling! The last two books are just exquisite.
These books are beautiful. The bindings and boxing are art in their own right. This is why I love books!
I absolutely love all your book videos but when it comes to Tolkien I get that so much more excited. Beautiful unboxing, I held my breath in anticipation, you can almost smell the newness. Great video Tom.
The entire video i was nervous, like before an exam, is so strange. When you opened those sealed books i was anxious. But in a good way. These perfect covers and end papers are the most beautiful way to honour an iconic book. Thank you for such a treat for the soul!
I have the Harper-Collins deluxe edition five books collection-I’m keeping it for my grandchildren when they become of age to start collecting and reading books. My brother who’s more “fanatical” has the super deluxe copies.
I have strange pangs when I see such lovely deluxe books. I think it is a way of honoring a work when you read it from a good, well made version. It would be interesting to see how deluxe volumes have changed down the years, the things publishers did to try and make a volume special. For instance I did not know about the indian paper edition of LOTRs until I saw it on Toms channel, I would consider that a special volume. I know there are lots of types of luxury paper and velum and all sorts of things publishers use to try to make a volume special, it would be nice to see some of these options?
Thanks Tom. Very generous of you to share the moments that thrill book collectors.
Well done on your restraint in not sniffing those books, I don't think I could have done it! How wonderful that some of Tolkein's more poetic, yet academic, work has been given the same care and attention as his Middle Earth books.
The intro is literally me whenever I'm cleaning out my wardrobe.
I always find it interesting when someone enjoys shopping for books even more than they enjoy the books themselves. I am not judging, of course. It's a hobby as valid and fascinating as any other, and it can lead to some high-quality clutter. In this case some rather beautiful clutter that at least someone else gets to enjoy unboxing.
I can only dream of my bank balance allowing such beauties into my library.
I love the end papers of the last two boxed books!! Not only is The Lord of the Rings a great book but special editions really do it justice! (I wish I could get into the full TLOTR world but I found both The Hobbit and The Silmarillion boring.) I can see why people are collecting different editions of TLOTR.
What I would love to find is a book of end papers. I have seen some cool TH-cam videos on how end papers are made and how it can be done at home. Too messy for me to do; I do enough with my Gelli printing.
That's my ramble for today.
Thanks for sharing!
Those are some of the most beautiful books I've ever seen
I like your videos a lot. I have never been interested in books very deeply since I started watching you. Also your editing choices are brilliant.
I enjoy your videos immensely!
Always fascinating…we enjoy the suspense ❤😂🎉
It's amazing all of this came from one very talented man! I am so greatful that tolkien existed!
I love to read, but watching your videos I understand the feeling now of how much of an art true books are themselves. I recently watched book binding videos (and the history of book binding as well) and see what a beautiful thing books are. I have always had a love of reading and books but now I’m beginning to get an appreciation for books as well
Love how tolkien works are the most sought-after books than any other books because of nerds(including me) are the only ppl would spend alot of money for them😂
Your client was very trusting to leave those investment pieces completely uninspected for so long. The amount of damage returns I had to do for HC orders when I was a bookseller was appalling. I wouldn't have trusted that they were packaged and protected correctly. At least HC shipping department is better than PRH.
Why didn't the owner open these books?
It is not for us peons to understand the ways of the wealthy. The collector had probably already read the books (or not, who knows?) and bought these special editions as collectibles. He may even have bought two sets, one to open and this set as backup. Now perhaps he needs to downsize or has other interests.
Financial investment.
I have read Hobbit, LOTR, Silmarillion books in PDF format.... I have never see those books and held them in my hands, I think I will be able to do that someday. ❤❤❤
Who'd thought opening sealed books can be this so exciting!?
Beautiful books, thanks for the video.
Your entire channel is a treasure. Greetings from Spain 👏🏻
Oh, wow, I am thrilled for you!
Releasing leather bound books from plastic must be a good thing.
Some very beautiful editions there !
Forgive me asking but why did you unseal the last 2?
Does this not lower their potential value & interest to collectors?
i appreciate it was the only way to show us the stunning binding , interiors & signatures ?
Clever cutters come in handy
THIS is why I NEVER subscribed to streaming networks! By reading a book I do my own casting, direction.
I had the greatest joy of smelling books; sadly, 10 years ago, I lost it and it has been a surprise to me. Your videos do not bring back my ability to smell, but enhance my visceral joy of touching and holding a book.
Your content is deep yet easy to follow, so this is another reason why I follow You. Lotsahugs from Texas❤
This is awesome!!
A classic TH-cam video: unboxing classic books.
What a lucky man, you are! 🎶🎵
'Scuse me while I pick my jaw up off the floor...
Elite unboxing.
Lovely video, thank you.
I think at some point you referred to the owners of the boxes as collectors but are they really investors?
Or do you find this common (in relative terms) that some collectors really do leave such items unopened?
I was surprised to meet collectors who, when something wonderful is issued, buy two, one to open and one to leave unopened. They tell me that it is "in case something happens to the first one" but, personally, I don't have the money to do that. After awhile, they need to downsize or their interests change and they sell the duplicates.
the children of hurin edition is certainly one of the most beautiful modern books i have ever seen its already sold out so i cant see the pricing but im interestet how much would you have wantet for it
2500 euro.
@@Joker-fx6mh thank you
@@Joker-fx6mh i wondered it would be out of my price range. Congrats.
That cracking of the leather for that final book made me cringe. I hope the books new owner gives it much love as it wouldn’t sound so bad if opened more
this is so good
I wonder what he would think about the book ( Mr. Fix It and Miss Sue ). It is. no nonsense coming of age story where the brat dose not get her why.
Book overview:
This is the poetic tale of Miss Sue, a contentious young woman no matter what a father and mother would do. In trying to raise a proper woman of dignity and respect, what she became as she grew up was something they did not expect. So what are the parents to do when they are down to their last wit, and realize they have no choice but to send for Mr. Fix It.
❤❤❤❤❤
How exactly you got your hands on them?
My sad reality is that, when I'm in a position to be able to afford these books at their current value.
They will no doubt, again, be beyond my reach.
Do u have harry potter first editions
Once you sell them I hope you let us know what they sold for
They're all listed on my website if you're curious about pricing!
@@tomwayling thank you
WOW
What!!!!!!!!!
I love my job; love your job more
Wow face
Oh man..! No No No... I would never, ever, consider buying books still in plastic that are any older than a year. I have seen way too many problems with sealed books.
Hello. I'm just curious as to what kind of problems you have came across. Would you mind sharing?
@@wheel2man Mold, moisture damage, bug infestation and simple manufacturing defects hidden by the plastic.
🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Something sad about buying a book to collect but not read….what is the point of that?
*As an avid collector, I was a bit stunned by the sullying of **_Sigurd and Gudrun's_** and **_The Children of Húrin's_** original packaging. Most buyers place a substantial premium on it remaining intact. Also (esp. when purchased as gifts), it allows the recipient the unique thrill of unsealing a pristine copy themselves. Nonetheless, I'm grateful for your channel in presenting authors, publishers and their creations with such keen insight and verve.* 📚🏆
What about the smells!?!?
That's getting a bit personal.
Not open books and hold on to them? What are you, Smaug laying on the Dwarves treasure? Yeah, look at what happened to that Worm. Sell it to me and I'll read the damn books, sealed be damned!
Simon is probably frothing at the mouth, knowing he won't see a penny from these sales.
Not a fervent reader, this customer :) Buying books but not unpacking them can only mean they are meant to make money…
Your dark academia vibes are so strong it's concerning
what's the point of the un-boxing antiquarian books without giving prices and value of the books?
There's something a bit cynical about these collections.
