As an 80-year old book lover I can so relate to this. Visting my small town local public library recently (it's also a contact point for social services) I had a wander around. And discounting the fashionable media and digital services avaliable, I left in little doubt I own more books (and better books) than they do. My major regret these days - rarely leaving a recliner - is that I can't enjoy the second joy of my life behind reading. And that's wandering around old book shops so long that sheer embarrassment dictates I buy something. And that collection you just unboxed? I'm off to sulk!
Love the whole process; I’m locked in. I am particularly fond of the buying process and your thoughts on each item. In a side note. Have you ever thought about doing readings on a sister channel? I think your voice would lend to it well.
There is no such a thing like too much money spent on books 😄 The Secret History is such a good find, signed. But The Children of Hurin is stunning! Very nice finds overall, thank you for sharing!
You seem very knowledgeable about all of Tolkien’s work and personal life. I love The lord of the rings movies and have just started reading his books. I want to know more about the author and his books. I would love if you did a series of videos on all his works and personal life including how well or poorly the books sold originally, what inspired these stories, how he was able to create a new language and anything else you find interesting. 🧐 Thanks so much, love learning about the history of books and love the joy and enthusiasm you bring to these videos!
Absolutely love these types of videos, Tom. And I also love the ones where you focus on just one very special book - its binding, its provenance, etc, etc.
Ralph Bakshi's work on the LOTR may not be the best telling of the story but it is a true work of art. I never knew of the Brochure. It looks fantastic.
I have that special edition of The Hobbit. My Wife found it way back at a used book store for real cheap. Its not inscribed by Christopher for sure...but it is inscribed by some guy that gave it a girl as a gift to win her over. Judging by how we found it in this store, I'm assuming it didn't go well.
my favorite video to date is about the volvelle astrological book. I love it when books have something unexpected. marvelous as always. keep up the great work!
One of my students gave me their book on the last day of school this year before they go to Secondary and honestly I think it's one of my most treasured possessions already ❤❤
hi tom, love the video. The green bar on the side is a little distracting though, maybe make it a bit smaller next time? Or have it popup each time a new book is shown, but then disappears until the next book.
Its nice to know this whole secret world of book collecting is alive and well. I don't think, despite computers making owning books easier, that book lovers will ever disappear.
Yeah g'day, Hello Tom, I stumbled over your channel while vegging out trying to avoid doing my rehab. Yes, I love books and you can never have too many books. I wish we all had more money to indulge in our love of and for books in all formats.
Love this channel. First time I landed here I though Mick Hucknall had a book channel. But well done, Tom.. started reading again after a busy couple of years. Finished Dune Messiah and Fire and Blood. Right now in the middle of Watchmen (3rd time reading it) after that I begin A game of Thrones
Long time fan of your TikToks here, and happy to have come across your TH-cam channel! I didn't know you were a fellow alumnus of St Andrews, I did an MLitt in early modern history there. I'm also a great fan of Bouquiniste (and stop there anytime I'm in St Andrews), and that's actually where I found the book that inspired my PhD project
I only own 3 first editions, of no particular value to anyone but myself but they're mine and I love them. I am not in a position to be able to add to my tiny collection, so these videos are wonderful.
When I was 14 I fulfilled my high school work-experience at the local library HQ. At the end of the week I got first dibs on the huge book sale of volumes being taken out of circulation. I picked up the first 10 parts of The Complete History of Middle Earth, first editions. I imagine they have little monetary value as they have library stamps in them. It tickled me that the library had first editions in circulation, they are a nice memory and a fun talking point on my shelf, just wish they had all 12.
I love your enthusiasm for all things JRRT, but I rrad the LOTR books in cheap paperback editions back in 1971 and stopped there (ok, I saw the Peter Jackson films). But at Hatchards last week I came across a paperback copy of one of his academic medieval studies (didn't buy it - too esoteric even for me). One of my university profs was also a medievalist, an authority on the Pearl Poet, and he was friends on that level with JRRT. I have a suitcase full of paperbacks I've been hunting which are flying back to the US with me Cheaper than international shipping!
Wow. Great jjobb with these finds. 😮 I think you have our dream job 😊 except for the hard work and price negotiations. We probably should raid a few school libraries for their unwanted first editions! 😂 Nice to hear from some of your clients how collecting rare and significant editions can be a worthwhile passion. 😊
I hope one day we can get a deep dive into your private collection I love your passion thanks to you I’ve been building a small collection of my own keep up the amazing work
Loves these videos, there’s needs to be more book collectors out there! Is there a market for American writers in the Uk? Maybe for classics like Faulkner, Twain, Hemingway, Lovecraft etc, but also contemporaries like McCarthy, Le Guin, DF Wallace, S. King… or are there deals to be had on those writers? Also, do you see many older editions of Thomas Taylor, Goethe, Laboulaye, Blavatsky, Jung, or older Alchemical/theurgical works? Cheers from Canada, keep up the great work.
Great video - my fave was the Bakshi LotR catalogue. I'm not sure the 'total spent' Matrix-style graphic on the left is necessary, it was a little distracting I thought.
Do you ever smell books? I do. I know this looks like a troll comment but it's not. My wife doesn't believe me that books smell great.... I'm not weird
That intro would go way different here in Canada lol. Come home after a week to no parcels because porch pirates take that in half an hour if you arent out there right way.
My regret is usually “I wish I had MORE money to spend on books…” 😢. I’ve gotten to the point that I look for used books in countries I’m headed for and have them delivered “in country” so I can save on shipping (often free) and spend more on books - just have to watch out for the luggage fees and dealing with security when they scan a 50 pound bag and don’t see anything inside (the books tend to be relatively uniform and featureless on x-ray…).😅
Have you ever heard of Castalia House , they stared publishing leather bound books on archival paper back in 2019. They have a subscription model, and I recently got a gorgeous reproduction of the Peacock edition of Pride and Prejudice.
At various stages through this video… I love Tom… I want to be Tom… I want to steal Tom's books! ps the swirly green column was meaningless, but I understand. Probably best to keep that sort of information out of videos like this anyway.
Too much Tolkien! Sorry to be such a philistine, but I wouldn't give you tuppence for any Tolkien and I've had a go at reading them all, never got beyond a few pages. I can see your delight, Tom, in finding a particularly wanted item for an individual customer. I have been such a customer searching for items for years that were valuable to me, mainly for my own research needs, and finally lighting on a title after years of searching is such a joy. I've got one such item on the way to me at the moment from a Dutch specialist seller in the history of science and just can't wait to receive it. About three years ago I located a copy of a really rare title in German that not even the British Library owns! It is wonderful fun to be able to make such a boast to other book-lovers and they always share in my delight. I absolutely agree that there is no such thing as spending too much money on books. I love your enthusiasm and delight in the importance of the books that you handle. You really know what they will mean to your customers, don't you?
amazes me people want christopher tolkiens releases, He just had a famous dad. I wouldnt spend money on Julien Lennons releases because his dad was John,
Hello Tom! I love the vibes of your videos, (and shorts). Your channel is such a gem for book lovers!
'Too Much Money On Books' no such thing
Absolutely. Abandoned on a desert island, I'd read the label on a tin of beans until I knew it by heart.
Buying books is the most exciting part of the book business for me!! I love buying books.
As an 80-year old book lover I can so relate to this.
Visting my small town local public library recently (it's also a contact point for social services) I had a wander around. And discounting the fashionable media and digital services avaliable, I left in little doubt I own more books (and better books) than they do.

Love your enthusiasm . You really manage to stir up curiosity. I thoroughly enjoy your channel. Thank you .
There is no such a thing like too much money spent on books 😄 The Secret History is such a good find, signed. But The Children of Hurin is stunning! Very nice finds overall, thank you for sharing!
This is absolutely what i love about your channel! It's also great to hear what you sell them for too
Your enthusiasm for books is so refreshing. I love watching you open the boxes.
You seem very knowledgeable about all of Tolkien’s work and personal life. I love The lord of the rings movies and have just started reading his books. As a Tolkien collector I just sent you a message on your website. Love his books.
Bouquiniste in St. Andrews is a wonderful bookshop! It’s a delight to know you’re a fellow St Andrewsian! 🎉
Absolutely love these types of videos, Tom. And I also love the ones where you focus on just one very special book - its binding, its provenance, etc, etc.
Every time I see one of this, I want to go to tourné around my country to find old and rare books for my collection. I only wish, I have more money :(
Seeing you display and comment upon your books I'm reminded of the Ceniza brothers thoughts on modern books and printing in The Club Dumas.
You look so happy slicing open your boxes and examining the contents!
Ralph Bakshi's work on the LOTR may not be the best telling of the story but it is a true work of art. I never knew of the Brochure. It looks fantastic.
Tempting, yes. A gorgeous piece of ephemera.
@@KristineMaitland I wouldn't mind adding it to my collection.

I feel you. I'm a minimalist in everything else, but books.... it's Tsundoku for me. I'm so glad the Japanese has a word for it.
A wonderful showing of some beautiful books, Jrr's monograph is brilliant as was he.
This is Paradise for book lovers. Love that you let us in on the real fun stuff of unpacking. A better Christmas
Yes pls. Make more videos on books. Would love to watch!!
my favorite video to date is about the volvelle astrological book.

I love watching these videos. I get so much energy from watching them.
A big Tolkien fan here and you have some real gems. So glad I found this channel! Just watched your Tom Bombadil video. Loved it! ❤
Absolutely delighted to have found this wonderful site…. I would advise investing in a craft knife to open the box’s however
Its nice to know this whole secret world of book collecting is alive and well. I don't think, despite computers making owning books easier, that book lovers will ever disappear.
Yeah g'day,
Hello Tom, I stumbled over your channel while vegging out trying to avoid doing my rehab. Yes, I love books and you can never have too many books. I wish we all had more money to indulge in our love of and for books in all formats.
Loving these videos .
Not just for how much you spend but mainly for the history/story behind each book .

It is always heartbreaking to see some one have to break up their collection.

That children of Hurin edition is stunning
Perfect channel for a booklover!
If I ever have the money in my life you are the guy I’ll go to hunt me a set of the “In Bocca” cookbooks 😁😁
Let’s normalize spending too much money on books.
Too late.
Too much money on books, said no book nerd ever ☺ all those lovely books!!
Something warm, welcoming and wholesome about antiquarian books and collecting them . 💯

"...and this, folks, is what book joy looks like in the wild."
Interesting as always!

Yours is a wonderful job.
I wish you would interview famous authors on this channel some day :)
Now that's my idea of money well spent.
I think you need to invest in a beautiful ledger.....
Would love more videos likes this.
Any good story behind the letter opener Tom?

I have a copy of the US slipcased "The Hobbit" in my collection. I have to say, it's one of the highlights, along with my 1974 red slipcased LOTR.
I like what you do, Thanks
Have you ever heard of Castalia House , they stared publishing leather bound books on archival paper back in 2019.

It's like a magic the gathering vintage booster box opening hosted by the singer form Simply Red :D

Fascinating, even though I dislike Tolkien!...thank you for pinpointing Bouquiniste...they may help me find a few St Andrews-oriented pieces...dgp/uk
As alreadyt said, you can never spend too much money on books.
Fascinating purchases. Do you ever come across any philatelic related literature?
I've enjoyed all of it.
Ok I came to your latest video for a request for a series about sci fi writers from the 30s to the 60s
I can relate to the title of this video...
my favourite book was the one I made with ryanair to ibiza in 2016 best holiday ever
Hi Tom, I hope the new Business works, I am still looking for a first edition of Charles F Mitchells," Mitchells Construction" 1888

Admire your passion for our legacy
It just occurred to me that this channel is similar to Japan Camera Hunter. Yet very different.
Love this...
And I thought my lot of 20 random Dover Thrift books from ebay was exciting.
Tom... I always choose books over food..... Economic choices do not apply to books.
"I Spent Too Much Money oOn Books"
-- Alren concept.
I'm headed to Rome myself. Any good book store recommendations?
This is so relatable
It's a passion.
“I spent too much money on book” is every bibliophile’s motto.
And… “I wish I had more money to spend on books 😢”
Those are books that are money well spent, I dare say
My godmother was a dust jacket illustrator but I've no idea who she worked for or what on, is there any way to find out?
“I spent too much money on books”
I recognize the individual words, but they make no sense in that order…..
Do you collect books for your child? Which ones?
Did you grow up in Abingdon Oxfordshire?
DIDN'T WE ALL 😅😅😅😅 !!!!!
nice content , keep up
That would be less once you take out your commission for the other books that you're buying for others.
Do you happen to have the lost world 1912 i recomend it. If you do own it can you show it off in a short
amazes me people want christopher tolkiens releases, He just had a famous dad. I wouldnt spend money on Julien Lennons releases because his dad was John,
I don't know what i am doing here. I don't even have 10 rupees to buy chocolate.
(Yes, i love reading books)
Would you call the maker of the scrapbook anonymous? Shouldn’t it be unknown? They are not attempting to be anonymous. The information is just lost.
Love your videos but this one was unwatchable for me because of the distracting green wavy thing on the left.
