My review says basically this: This game is a hot steaming pile of shit with a few redeeming qualities and far more bad aspects. play at your own risk. Personally, I would leave this game far behind if I could and move on to actual good games, but as was said in the video, there's simpyl nothing else like it.

Only reason why people actually still play it is because people put so much time and money into the game it’d be a massive waste if you didn’t force yourself to enjoy it

Definitely. This review was spot on and highlights the best and worst things about the game and my mixed feelings playing it.
There is one thing though about montzation, they need to make money for them to keep counting their game and just be happy that this game is free, and that it is updating Constantly and has a great community of people supporting it. And it really isn’t that hard to get to higher ranks, just spend a little time to grind out some vehicles and you’ll be having great fun in battle rating 5.0 and above.

I sank about 6,000 hours into this game. After 6 years of everything going downhill slowly, I gave up and quit this game about a year ago. It’s such a shame to see a game with this much potential go down the drain because of dev negligence and greed.

It's called Russian stubbornness, most of the popular games made by Russian devs are slowly going downhill because they are too stubborn to listen too the people and realize they need to make changes.
I have been play WT since the game release. Here is what I feel. the game is awesome, many interesting vehicles, great graphic, and more and more features it has now and more in future. But on the other hand, it is ABSOLUTELY unfriendly with new players. completely unplayable with a team that teammates lack of experience to win a game. Sometimes they just don't know what to do ffs. There are too many issues with WT like BR system, map rotation , and matching problems.....etc

Bad teammates are something you have to deal with, and it’s a issue across all games. I think a real issue is premium vehicles that have high capability. People can just buy these vehicles that are in some cases overpowered. Take the XM-1 and the KA 50 as an example. If they just improved game mechanics and premium prices, they would make tons more money and make all of us happy!!
Gaijin should add a new realistic game mode such as campaigns based on historical wars and battles like the wars in the Mid East of 56, 67, 73 and 80-88 or bush war 75-88 in Angola or India-Pak war 65 and 71. Several battles should be linked ariund historical maps that the team can choose from. This would also require a change in caps to being placed more realistically depending on the scope of the objective rather than like Gaijin does it, just by tossing them randonly in the middle.

Ekl Haft what does that have to do with it? If he gets everything for free, and he still doesn’t have a great time with the game, that’s really saying something. He’s not constantly showing off “hey I have Gaijin partnership.” He shits on the game all the time. He doesn’t let the fact that he has everything for free hinder gameplay.

True..A good tip for high tier arcade..stop at 7.0. Grind all the way to earn 9.7. Long journey but hey rather than always uptiered. Repair cost is a problem too in 7.0 especially british tanks i'm playing right now. But with a moderate~good gameplay, your money won't go below 0 even you lose except your playing style is a suicide squad which i encounter many many of them in most matches. You will know your teammate is a suicide maniac when the game just started 2 mins and more than 5 people already dead
This is the most accurate desciption of the game. It's so exciting everytime you kill an enemy and get your new vehicle but 80% of the time you'll just end up suffering to the bone.
spending 8 hours to grind 3000 rp off a 250000 rp tank cause your uptiered every match ...like gaijin matches you too tanks that you cant penitrate . i almost wonder if the mismatch is to slow your progress turn the game into a slog .

@@gasdorficmuncher9943 I think MM is by vehicle rank moreso than BR. For example - I use USA at 3.0 because they have the lowest BR Rank 3 planes (F6F-5, F4U-1D, XF5F) but I see P47s and P51s against me over half the time it seems.
Here are the reasons I have problems with War Thunder:
(Disclaimer, I started off from the British tech tree since I'm British so most of the examples are from the British point of view. However, the problems are universal in most cases)
*All gamemodes:*

Spawn campers; you're not going to have fun if your kept at your spawn, either by a heavy tank (tank combat) or a fighter in the stratosphere that boom and zooms you before you get a chance to think (air combat)

Learned helplessness: Either when you're just starting out, using a poor-performing vehicle or going through the stock grind you will encounter situations where you simply think 'there's nothing I can do'. Situations include: Russians, Boom and zooms, going against fighters in bombers/fighter bombers, having a gun that can't penetrate almost anything at your BR, etc.

New things: Mostly applies when you're a beginner, but stepping into the unknown is oftentimes extremely scary/aggravating. For example, starting off in tank realistic you have no idea how to aim without the assist, but enemies will typically begin to hit you within one to three shots. This is why I agree with people saying that War Thunder is extremely anti-beginner. A simple fix to this would be to inform people about the ability to create custom battles; here you can practice whatever you want as many times as you want without the fear of losing Silver lions and more. I would highly recommend it to anyone starting the game or venturing for the first time into a new game mode. Test drive/Test sail/Test flights are also pretty useful, but they aren't that helpful for learning dogfighting techniques or similar.

Specialised vehicles: From either side, these can be extremely infuriating. On the giving end, you have to learn a unique playstyle that is way different from what you were learning before (For example, the Archer has its gun pointing backwards, so you're either moving or sniping, which is far removed from the other tanks where you can perform a fighting advance all the time.). Also, having specialised vehicles can lead to 'wise withdrawal' (And yes, that is a thing as I'll explain); either your tank is lightly armoured (with or without a good gun) or you are a heavily armoured tank with a bad gun, which can make it extremely difficult to advance, especially against the russians since they have both good armour and good guns, which gives them peace of mind when advancing. This also leads to toxicity in the team since members can't understand why the snipers and light scout vehicles don't want to fight a T-34 or KV-1 that could 1-shot them.

Specialised vehicles part 2: On the receiving end, tanks become extremely difficult to face if the person using them knows about their strengths and especially if the map plays to their strengths. The example which seems most fitting is Russian tanks; every tanker's nightmare (unless you have a good gun, but that's quite hard to have in the lower ranks and normally only becomes effective after the stock grind). It may be supposed that the reason these tanks have a low BR is due to their poor depression and long reload, but these weaknesses are extremely hard for a player to exploit, especially on flat ground like the maps added recently... Also, keep in mind that this applies to all specialised vehicles, not just the tanks I use as examples.

Abusive/ineffective teammates. Of course, as simple probability, you're going to run into these guys. But, due to the punishing play style they become even more of a problem since you have to rely on them more. What are you supposed to do if someone pushes you out of cover because they don't like your tank? What are you supposed to do if your team members all rush only one of the three cap zones, or completely ignore them whatsoever? It isn't a problem with your own play style, but the game will punish you regardless.

Idols: War Thunder youtubers are given a lot of perks and are encouraged to play/promote the game. This does a lot to help the good image of the game from the outside, and attracts a lot of new players (who normally quit quite soon, which ironically defeats the whole purpose of the advertising), but provides a huge problem in the player community; these people, watching the videos of people who are much further along in the game, aim towards that goal and, since these youtubers play higher tiers quite often, players are aiming for high tiers from the start which, like trying to aim high in a plane, leads you to stall, crash and burn.

Stock grinds: This has been mentioned in the video, but I feel like it's good to mention it a bit more. Not only do you have to go through stock grinds, you seemingly have to do it endlessly since you research new vehicles and have to grind out their modifications or revisit previously unplayed vehicles (mainly since they have a poor gun) to grind out the missing modifications. This is encouraged, due to the dual-function of research points and the progression bonus; for the former, this means that non-spaded vehicles get to use the research to fuel the research of the modifications and the research of new vehicles at the same time and for the latter it means you have to buy your newly-researched vehicle to gain a perk towards getting the next one.

Ground battles:
The difference between AP and APHE shells: I've mainly seen this problem in the British tech tree, but it relies on a misunderstanding of Gaijin about how these shells are different. On the surface, if they have similar penetrations, you would expect them to be similar powers, but the reality is very different. APHE is a godlike form of AP, and you really suffer if you don't have it. Probably the main issue is that it disregards how much of your tank is actually in view; with an AP round, I can only hit the turret and injure the people inside the turret if the turret is the only thing exposed. APHE rounds don't care; they'll hurt everyone inside of the tank if they're close together no matter if the people in the hull weren't in the firing line so it normally one shots or causes extreme damage on the first shot.

Useless guns: Whenever your tank carries a weapon that is extremely hard to kill an enemy with. Again, I see this mainly in the British tech tree but this is because it's the tech tree I play. Vehicles like the Cromwell 1 and Churchills have extreme difficulties penetrating frontal armour of the vehicles they encounter (especially Russian tanks like the T-34). The British 4.7 SPAAG Crusader AA Mk I also suffers from this problem since it's more suited to fighting ground vehicles (due to lack of fire density to combat air vehicles) but even on the ground it doesn't meet the lightly-armoured vehicles it needs to face to get results, meaning it becomes almost useless as an anti air and anti tank vehicle, which is quite depressing.

The point-campers. I've mentioned spawn campers already, but these players are also extremely annoying. They prevent aggressive plays to get to the critical objective by just camping around it. There's almost nothing you can do about it, and they will always have the advantage in engagements since they'll have you in their sights while you can't see them while they're behind a wall or bush and they will shoot first if you come around a corner because they don't need to wait for their gun to stabilise.

Strategy abusers: Of course, strategy is an integral part of the game, but there are some that take it too far and make the game extremely frustrating for everyone else. For example, the Italian fast SPAAG (R3 T20 SPAAHS?)that rush around the map and get into your spawn before you've barely moved a third of the way towards the middle. They cause confusion, panic and hatred among the team (Confusion, because the team suddenly goes from passive moving mode to high alert which causes slow advancing. Panic because of the same reason as before, and hatred since lightly armoured tank destroyers fall prey to them within a few moments of entering the match (especially hateful since these vehicles often form the integral anti-armour capabilities of your team))
There are a lot more of these points, but I'm getting a bit tired of writing them all out. Throughout all of this, my feelings lie with the new players; they are the main victim of all of these points and it hurts that this is the reason that so many don't want to play. Having a community of happy, go lucky players is a gift, but increasingly you're either try-harding or playing meme vehicles which isn't fun for anyone involved. If you are a new player, I would recommend the Russian tech tree; it seems like a relatively calm tech tree to get started on.
Great comment! I couldn't have explained it better. You are right about the russian tanks being too strong. An example are tanks like the T-80U. In my opinion, Germany should get the Leopard 2 A6 (at the same BR as the T-80U) to have something to compete.
Thank you for taking the time to write this comment. I’m a fairly new player who got to tier 4 on American tanks. Lately I’ve stopped playing and I never really understood why, but thanks to this I finally figured out why I wasn’t enjoying it as much.

From playing the German, American, and Italian (I’m avoiding the Russians and Chinese, they seem too OP) I’ve found that the American line gets super stale and just not fun to play (I just got done grinding all of the M4 variants, but I’ve shifted back to Germans after getting burned out of that) I’ve almost unlocked the Tiger II (H), and have been having fun with the German Bulldog and its HEATFS. The main issue I’ve been having recently are BR gaps. The Italians are the worst when it comes to it (disclaimer: the latest update threw in some lend/lease tanks to patch the hole), It became apparent that I had to grind out the 4.7 TD just so I could have another tank next to the Tipo IC. I am also having this problem when jumping to the German Leopard I from the Panther F (I think). There isn’t a ~6.5 tank to plug the hole so I don’t have one 6.0 tank while the rest are 1+ BR rank lower.

Yep, I remember waaaay back when I got sick of WoT and started playing War Thunder I loved the fact that there was no stock grind, the vehicle grind was nice and comfortable since reaching a new rank unlocked multiple aircraft at once, and even if you lost a battle you still got a good chunk of XP. Aaaaaand then they added the vehicle module system (bad stock grind), switched to the BR system from the Rank 1-20 system (shitty unfun vehicle progression), and winning is now the only way to get any worthwhile XP. Fuck off, Gaijin.

This game was at It's best when it had only 1930s - 1950s vehicles and planes. Since they started adding modern stuff it went south and It's worse every patch. They showed a big middle finger to all players who are into WW2.

I've played WT for the past 6 years + and I really enjoy it. You just need to be aware of the game's problems and how to avoid them.
I do agree with everything said in the video, except one part : Premium Time. I DO NOT recommend to buy any of this. I've bough premium time for over a year, and frankly, this isn't worth it. I'm not talking about in-game bonuses though, those are fine. I'm talking of mental health and relationshit to games.
When I had premium time, I had the feelig that if i'm not playing WT, and playing another game, then i'll loose money since my premium time will expire at a certain time, and doesn't care if I play or not. It creates a vicious circle : you play the game because you think you'll loose money, and then you're relieved when it exipires... only for a little while, then you miss your premium account and rebuy one.
Instead i'll probably go for good (and not too expensive) mid-tier premium vehicles. Imho, Top Tier premiums (like XM-1, Leo 1 L/44 and such) are great if your only goal is to get to top tier battles, which I do not reccomend that much. I'd stick to rank 3 to 4, and not go above, where ATGMs, Helicopters comes in to ruin the fun. (I do enjoy some top tier vehicles though). It migh not look as worth-it as premium account, but there is one MASSIVE advantage : Disconnect from the game for 1, 2 months, even a year : your premium vehicle will still be there, your premium account will not. (Also, if you know how to play them, and don't go for the absolute cheapest ones, a premium vehicle does give you substantial boost to your RP and SL incomes, and pretty much prevents you from bankrupt : I can attest this, my favourite lineup is French 7.7, and i'm not a really awesome player)

You are so right. I also stopped buying premium time a while ago just because it makes me feel like "I have to play this game or I loose my money". That makes me forcing myself to play War Thunder every day without really wanting it so I don't have fun anymore.
In conclusion, gaijin needs a fix, gaijin won't fix shit, and you should stick to lower tiers if you want fun.

I swear they have gone back and "balanced" the lower tiers, or something. 1.0 BR and up to say 2.7 used to be good fun, but getting multiple kills now is way more difficult - like they nerfed some decent vehicles or changed pen rules (again).

I've spend over 700 hours on this game and half of it is suffering. Suffer in the grind, suffer in the upranks, suffer in repair costs, suffer of toxic player base, suffer of p2w and not to forget suffering as a lvl 44 against lvl 100 for ex. It's an hop on n hop of relationship with this game

Yea game is a bit of a shtty experience in the beginning for tank rb. Having low level crews mean long repair times etc. When you go against rank 100 players, they will have a full line up against you. Kill them, they hop in a plane and will revenge bomb almost every time lol.

As a long time "free to play" player I think you summed it up pretty good. You should have warned new players about addictiveness of the game.. I mean, I deleted my account 3 times and now I am on the forth one unlocking top tier of Italy and Japan both ground and air force.
As a preface, Steam says I have 8000 hours in War Thunder and I create YT videos of this game and have actively played since mid 2015.
I know a lot of people that go on about the pricing of premium vehicles, and you're pretty spot on about that. They're too expensive for the number that you have to buy to grind even some of the new additions.
I've said this before in a video, but I think gaijin could simply fix this through the warbond shop. You grind a crate that gives you a tier 4 premium that can be copy-paste (say, IS-2 "Revenge of the Hero Brother", or any reskinned famous tank or plane) but will at least allow people to use them to grind more effectively while still populating the servers. I've also brought up the idea of a bond system much like Runescape has currently, where you have to grind the warbond shop for a 1 week ticket of premium time that you can activate at anytime (it would take much more than a week of playing the game to acquire ofc, in order to make buying premium time still viable). For me these solutions do minimal damage to gaijin's bottom line while increasing the "stayer-base (you know, the playerbase that regularly comes back to the game)" and increasing player satisfatcion.
No game is perfect, and honestly the matchmaker is about 90% fine (decompressing the MM at the 5.7 and 8.7 levels will make the MM way better for tanks and at the 8.7 and 10.0 level for planes). Considering that the only real gripe people have with WT is the monetisation of the game, then I think overall, WT is a fairly good game. There are flaws ofc (map design and some polish as well as the other issues i've mentioned), but overall, it's not a bad game imo
Yeah, that and MM, though. Having to face 5.3 tanks, especially heavies, with a 4.3 tank and being completely unable to penetrate is just horrible.

I will say that a single plane in 1 patch can throw off a whole mm. Aside from the F-104 that rank is pretty good in jets and tanks are also pretty ok in that area. I actually forgot about the 104 but aside from that, the game isn't too bad once you get past the grind

I’ve played war Thunder for five years and have just recently achieved unlocking jets in three Nations... I love jets and the different play styles they have but gaijin butchers there battle rating at this time a 1945 era jet can meet Mach 2 capable f104s all because gaijin wanted it to do well so more people would buy there way to it, War Thunder is fun but sacrificing a whole br for a new plane is just... greedy

See this is the thing, I've had the game for a bit, reached br 5.0 for several nations, but I havent even touched the newer ones, france, Italy, china, sweden, any of the naval trees.
What tree do I continue my focus on for tanks? Germany, russia or britian? What about planes? again Germany, america or Japan?
Theres so much I'd love to play but never will. Guess youtube will have to be a substitution. Or just make a channel, do warthunder vids and maybe get a creator account lol.
I've played against F-104s with planes like the F86-A5 and the MiG-15Bis. They're not that hard to evade, and a quick headon isn't a bad idea. The Su-7s and F3H-2s are worse to fight because they're both faster and just as easy to control as any other plane.
You've been playing a game for FIVE YEARS and you've only just got to play the vehicles you love? Imagine playing COD for five years just to unlock the gun you want. It's absolutely ludicrously stupid.

The lower ranks really are king. I realized that yesterday when i hopped in the 2.3BR F2A-1 together with 3 friends because one had to grind, we all put on different colors of smoke and crushed enemy team after enemy team in a rainbow formation. Didnt lose any money and we had so much fun :D
Its the great paradox of all these F2P progression games (idk how to call them). Why should i even progress when i get more fun out of low tier anyways? Yet we still all somehow strive to get to top tier :D
I always end up playing BR 3 to 5.7 in the end. Everything above is nice for a while but compression begins to be clearly visible and perceptible. I think the paradox exists because we love "progression", even if it's artificial. Weird.
The F2A-1 is a great plane btw. I really love it.

This is a very well done video, and hits on all the key points in my opinion. I tried the game many years ago, and it seems like the same glaring issues, are still around today. Which is a real shame as the grind + the ridiculous prices turn would be players such as myself entirely off. Nonetheless I appreciate the honest review, and again very well done.
Thanks :) I can relate to most of what you said. The way I'd say the game is playable: get a premium account for a year on sale, along with 2 cheap premiums for your nation of choice and you're set. But only if you can resist to spontaneously buy more stuff... This will keep you playing for 365 days with an investment of 50 bucks. Never mind top tier anyways. It's even farther from being balanced and just overall less fun than low to mid.

But in my opinion if you want to play this game and have fun, choose 2 or 3 countries you like and play them all up to 6.0, if you do want to head towards high tier, then choose the nation you had the most fun playing to 6.0 and go with them, if you enjoy it carry on, if not just drop back to lower tier
I should add, this my experience with the ground forces, not Air, I've never gone that high in Planes and don't know what it's like
That's what I did. Germany until the Leopard I. Soviets and US also up to 7.X. In the air trees I only researched specific cas planes and fighters for ground rb.
As an rb player i can say you can go higher in certan nations but i for no reason recomend going to top tier jets if you are a free to play player because the game is literaly desined for people to buy all the upgrades and let me say stock mig21 are so bad you are beter not even using them

It depends greatly on how efficient you become. I've found ways to maximize my research, and am moving along quite quickly. Also, if you can get a premium account on sale, it can be quite affordable. I only paid 30$ for an entire year. I suppose my advice would be, resist the urge to make grinding the point, and just enjoy the game where you are. It can become unbearable otherwise. This is coming from a guy with over 1500 hours in game.

I haven't spent a cent and I've gotten to 6.7 German tanks, 7.3 German planes, 6.7 Russian tanks, 4.3 Russian planes, 8.7 Italian planes and 6.3 Italian tanks. Also 5.7 American tanks and 6.7 American planes, playing near constantly for over a year. Being forced to play on ultralow graphics probably increased my performance.

Just grind Sweden its faster, I was suffering for two years with Italy and still didnt get past 4.7
Being a WT Vet: Don't buy premium at all. You can have fun without it and still have derpiness mixed in. Take for example the French F.222.2
Lets take around 75-80ish 50klg bombs and carpet bomb the entire point while doing next to no damage unless i hit a tank dead on.
Or the Russian KV-2 with a 105 mm howitzer that can kill anything with it's HE round so long as you HIT because the Shell is THAT HEAVY!
While yeah it's unforgiving to new players sticking through it in the long run really does reward you. And before anyone asks about the upper tiers: NO! It isn't FUN as it's like trying to restart the game with NO EXPERIENCE! All the leading you did before? DOESN'T MATTER AT MACH 1! Tanks? Oh yeah just let the guy pen you from a kilometer away because fin stabilized shells exist. Oh and were you hoping to use the Maus because BIGGEST DERP? Well they took it out because the playerbase called for BR decompression with it because you either got "Dead if someone sees you at all" or "You're literally clubbing the entire match, even your teammates because no one can pen you from anywhere unless they get the lucky ricochet into your radiator or are a KV-2."
Basically it's fun but also annoying at the same time. Find a country that suits you and stick with it for awhile until you get the hang of it THEN move to a new one.
A lot of problems that people have can be fixed with a certain mentality.

If you come into war thunder wanting a specific vehicle (especially high tier one’s) and dont enjoy the rest then im afraid you’re gonne have a bad time.
If you simply wanne play matches where progress is a side effect than you can have a lot of fun.
I haven’t really reached any high tiers yet but nearly all ww2 vehicles seem very duable for me.
I get new vehicles often enough to not get bored and altough the modification research can be a pain I usually have what I want within a couple matches.
Another thing that keeps the variety good for me is the different gamemodes. I dont play exclusivly with tanks, I play naval and sometimes even air.
Almost a year playing (900h) and I don't even have a single jet. Lets not even talk about tanks. WT grind is horrible

Well, that's the problematic side of War Thunder in a nutshell
As a WT veteran of maybe 6 years now, I feel the bittersweet aspects of the game so much. Over the years I feel like it's been a slow downfall and decrease in quality of the game and quality of fun. Gaijin is becoming too comfortable with not listening to it's playerbase in many forms and different ways because of the sheer fact there's no real competition against them for a game such as this. My advice for people new to the game or considering joining the community of those who play it is this: if you plan on playing for free them prepare to pay in some other form than money, that being fun or sometimes mental wellbeing in the forms of anger or losing all patience. You are at the mercy of ghost shells and of BR compression and you will both become very familiar with this fact and accept it if you have any intention of staying in the game for very long. With that being said, the game is fun sometimes and it is more skill based than money based, of course if you dump money into vehicles it gives you an edge but it doesn't guarantee you will do well. If you keep your wits about you and keep your eyes peeled, then you can do very well and feel very accomplished by pulling off flanks around the entire enemy team or holding off the hordes of enemies and their air support, or with the simple pleasure of telling your team to "Attack the D point!". You can and will have fun, but you need to understand that it is not a perfect game and it has deep issues that Gaijin is extremely hesitant to fix. Be cautious, but have fun
My advice would be to NOT PLAY in the first place, lol. The time and effort is NOT worth it. The game has too many issues. I have been playing for almost 2yrs now and the only reason I still play is because I have put too much time and money into it. I should have quit the first month.
Escape the sunk cost fallacity and quit! :) There are lots of other good games out there. I have to remind myself of this once in a while, too.

One other thing to add. Most recently the M48 super got added to German tech tree. One issue I have with it was that it needed the same amount of RP as the Leopard 2A5.
Which is 390000. For something that, in my opinion, performs less than the Leopard 2A4 (which has only 250000 RP cost, mind you) and is of an entire BR lower than the 2A5 to have that RP cost is simply ridiculous.
But definitely BR decompression is needed. A lot of vehicles like the Maus would be feel better if it wasn't where it is right now.

More advice to new players:
-Like he said, enjoy lower tiers. way more fun, less grind, less money, less rage.
-Speaking of lower tiers - I'd recommend you don't even touch jets. they're very badly done, to the point where realistic mode feels like arcade again. just not worth the time, frustration, and possibly money. Stick to propeller aircraft.
-Don't touch their naval game mode with a ten-foot pole. It's laughably bad. If you want ships, World of Warships, while imperfect, is far better.
Basically, Stick to mid/low tier tanks and planes. Then you'll only need 3 months of anger management instead of years of therapy :) Don't ever expect Gaijin to fix anything, ever. I've been playing War Thunder for 5 years and gave up on anything being fixed long ago. Don't buy anything from them unless it's like 90% off.
Also- If you want to try flight sims but don't want to buy IL-2 without trying a WW2 flight sim, try war thunder for free and use the sim mode as a test. It's not great, but its ok.
iF you want real fun fighting more or less balanced matches, go for simulator battles only they can offer that for now...
But so far every point mentioned here is so true it hurts, hell even latest premium tank like strv 103-0 is broken and doesn't work as tank as it cant aim... 50euros for that...
And bigger kick to players is most recent t-34 victory pack for 59.99 euros.... a tier 2 tank that's no different from regular tech tree, while premium tanks at that range cost below 10 euros.
It just show how much of cash grab this game had become, too bad i already sinked too much time into this and rather enjoy tank combat, but same modes and REALLY bad map designs and even worse balancing. Getting close to quiting this devilish game
I uninstalled yesterday and bought Flaming Cliffs 3 and the Persian Gulf map for DCS instead of more premium time.
To be fair, those kind of pack are targeted for collectors and whales, since it's just a reskinned vehicle instead of giving you more edge on the battlefield. Other than that,yeah same

I've been playing War Thunder since February 2017. You've nailed all the points to a tee, I love/hate this game. I've spent over $3,000 AUD ($1,500 USD I believe) on Golden eagles and Vehicles. Sometimes I absolutely love the game doing well and enjoying it. Then boom dying every game and not being able to do anything and I wanna strangle EVERYONE!!! (cough cough*) Being a british tech tree fan boi I can't agree with you more about the BR compression, Comparing some British vehicles to other nations (tanks especially) is ridiculous. I'm a War Thunder Player since 2014. I totally understand your points and have to say: I even hate the War Thunder Community nowadays. I'm in multiple Facebook groups about War Thunder. 2 of them are for german players (so not the in-game nation but real germans) and I was one that was meant for worldwide. In the german groups, the ''old guard'' just disappeared by the members being complete jerks and making others down or not accepting some posts. They thought the have to give that post hell, rather than scrolling down. At some point, even an admin had enough and left the group. In that group are less and less people that used to be in there and the ones that come nowadays are jerks. War Thunder took a huge place in my childhood since I've discovered that game. I'm since January 2020 18 years old but the post in those groups and the ''old War Thunder'' was a good childhood for me. But by the time the groups (as I mentioned) and the game itself changed sadly in a bad way. I've made in the groups a question, what they think of the battle rating 6.7 currently. The results shocked me. Many people think 6.7 is fine and yet those members mostly play allied nations and have a huge hate against the German nation (posting how they killed a Tiger or a Panther or making memes about them). In reality, the game is (especially for Germany) not really enjoyable on 5.7-6.7. Those tanks mostly get up tired and struggle to be fun. I mean Germany is the least mobile nation on that b.r since they depend on their armor and angeling to be effective but the problem in War Thunder is: The Tiger's face tanks that have HEAT-FS and just lol pen their frontal armor or tanks that have such a high velocity that they can overmatch the little part of the side that you have to expose, if you need to angle. Some tanks can even pen the UFP of a Tiger II with a solid shot (M103 for an example). We have a member in that group that keeps making posts about what is wrong with german tanks and he uses good points and explains them for the others. The most maybes just laugh at him and call him a Wehraboo or say things like git gud. I hope you won't delete my comment when I tell you this but this is just my experience: I saw a comment from a guy and he said he posted on a TH-camrs Discord Server something like the Tiger II isn't really that good anymore and the entire discord server hated him (some even claiming the Tiger II would be OP) but when the TH-camr posted a few days after that a Video about the Tiger II and literally stated the same everyone was fine. That's my problem with WT. The Meta is high mobility and high penning rounds. That leaves tanks like the Tiger II, IS-2, and so on in the dust. The problem I see is also: The Community wants more and more modern tanks and planes and they don't care about the WW2 vehicles anymore. Those are (how I call them) Call of Duty Players (I don't want to offend any CoD Player but when I think of CoD I think on fast gameplay without stops). Those people want fast tanks and as soon as they can't pen a Heavy Tank (which is the reason why Heavy Tanks are built) are they crying and making Mimi and Gaijin listen to them and gives them a high penning round for their fast tank. The Armor Meta is gone but Germany gets left behind on those battle ratings with tanks that are meant to fight on their own b.r and are meant to fight with their armor. In my opinion, should Tanks, that have stabilized guns and APDS/HEAT-FS and APDSFS not be allowed to face tanks from WW2. I think tanks like the Maus, IS-4, T32 and so on should be tanks that still need to stop in order to make the round go there where it should go and they should aim for weak spots and that angeling your armor actually affect your survivability. I mean, a heavy tank gives up his mobility in order to survive much and bounce enemy shells. In War Thunder is that no use since you just get lol penned by Post-war ammo or High-Velocity Cannons. I don't mind medium tanks or fast Tank Destroyers like Hellcats, and I don't mind post-war tanks like the M26E1 (that is post-war because of the gun) or the 14,5mm AA truck or ASU-57, but I do mind fast tanks that can just pen you wherever the fuck you please. Or tanks that have HEAT-FS/APDS against WW2 tanks in general. When I play a Heavy Tank I want that it feels like a heavy tank and not like some oversized medium tank that can't bounce shit. I mean Russians have their KV tanks, americans their jumbo and the brits have their Churchill which are on their b.r a true monster but do you know any other tank like those? Why shouldn't the Tiger I or II be like that? It's possible to kill them but it shouldn't be as easy as it is now. I know how to play my Tiger I and I got really good sim stats with it: 21 Battles, 13 Victories, 51 Ground Kills, 1 Air kill and 17 deaths and yet I still hate the Tiger. Why is that? Well The Tiger can be easily killed and there are simply more nations in the game that can kill a Tiger without any problem (even when he is angled). I remember a Battle of me fighting a Jumbo in my Tiger in Sim. He was like 600 Meters away. I've angled myself so I'm not that easy to penetrate. I tried to hit his MG port (which was hard on the given range and the fact that he hid his MG Port with bushes). Suddenly my Gunner and driver got killed. After the next round, I got killed by a Comet which was behind the Jumbo on the castle. I couldn't see him since I was trying to hit the MG port. I had fun bouncing the Jumbo's round and the Jumbo had fun bouncing my rounds. But my fun got ruined by the fact that he could penetrate my angled front armor without issue. Would he have at least struggled as well would I be totally fine by that. I hate it to do but IRL was the British 17 Pounder APDS complete shit since it was very inaccurate and because of that British tankers preferred their solid shot. (with the help of google you can easily find that). I rarely play Simulator Battles nowadays since many nations have a Sherman and some even a Panther. The French Panther is hard to be identified as such and therefore have some advantage. It's not fun trying to figure out if that is a french or Italian Sherman looking at you but when you pull the Trigger you have to pay a high price for it if it is friendly. Sure Sim should be the hardest game mode but it should be a: Is it a Panther or is it a Sherman? If it is a Sherman you shoot it and if it is a Panther you don't shoot. The Lend-Lease just makes it hard to see if you face an enemy or an allied Sherman since on range it's hard and people can put all sorts of decals on their tank. If I enter Sim nowadays I just shoot and don't care anymore if I teamkill an allied Sherman or Panther. Which ends up in my income. Gaijin has many construction sides but instead of working and fixing them they add more and the community supports them and as soon as somebody mentions problems with a certain nation they get just bullied like hell

Interesting video. You said so much about them putting monetary gain over the quality of the game and yet I feel you understated the problem. Maybe I have become to pessimistic after countless hours of grinding and suffering but every time I play I end up feeling disgusted and fed up. And it's a shame because I too love this game. It could be something amazing, a common ground for simulator and arcade game players to come and enjoy themselves. But Magz was really on point. They only care about money, older players will remember that things have always been that way, it just keeps getting worst.

You should also add the recent events that drove the whole community insane because of the rng. However if you somehow manage to keep your sanity you can get event vehicle which then you can sell in the market for gjn and then use it to buy, idk, premium time or maybe even more op vehicle. That way you can spend no money and have the good stuff
yeah, if you hold some older event vehicles they rise up in price and you can, over time, buy things that interest you. I did this and got the may-sale bundle.
that being said, events do indeed suck sometimes.

I agree with everything that is said here and I've got 3757 hours logged on the game since 2013. I'm rediscovering lower tiers as I can no longer be bothered with the pay to win helicopters spamming the top tier games.
What I would say is that people should consider getting into Sim mode for ground, there you can choose from a list of tanks and planes that will be in that event and this helps as it means you won't just keep getting 1.0br uptiers which I agree gets dull fast.

Everything you said is spot on about the game, Gaijin seem intent on just adding more & more vehicles & less concerned with fixing the real issues, nothing to entice new players, AB ground battles where probably most new players start are driven off by the issues that are not being addressed, things such as damage is so inconsistant, terrible spawn points which leads to spawn camping & everybody's favourite lawn darting by salty players, these along with other issues are what i think drive new players away

For example I brought the hunter fga 9 and I have to pay over 1 million silver lions for the max qualification.

I’ve been playing WT since maybe 2015 but I still haven’t reached Rank 5 in any nation yet due to grind issues. The game is very punishing for those who make a bad mistake like, say, stall their plane at low altitude or put themselves in a horrible situation. If you crash your plane, especially if you haven’t got any kills yet, you start losing SL, which is kinda what puts me off every now and then. I want to have fun with this game and know that not every mistake I make punished me dearly.
Eagle 18101 I've been playing wt since open beta in the end of 2013 when I got my ps4 I'm now at tier6 and once you get up at late tier v and into tier 6 the problems of balancing are much worse the things you learnt from props and early jets rule book goes out the window in tier 6 you need to keep speed altitude and learn to dodge missiles from the enemy at once by constantly checking your situational awareness and having a good team tier 6 is very hard my friend it's back breaking work
The main reason that everybody is leaving warthunder because we fear to repair aircraft

I've spent 1000s of dollars on war thunder I use to love it Obviously I've spent so much money but then I did one of the events and I grinded so hard for so long that by the time I got the tank I wasn't having fun anymore and have hardly played it since and haven't spent any money on it. But I still like it and watch TH-cam videos of war thunder I just don't play it for sum reason it just took all the fun out of it for me idk why
When you pay, this game get incredibly easy. With premium time and a premium jet i got 1.6 million RP in 3 days. its ridicoulous that you have to pay around 100€ from prem time + prem vehicle to get any meaningful progress

I use to play WT and had so much fun but than i started to get into the mid/high tears and i left because it was too much grind. Love the video, its so on point.

I am a regular player of the game, and I can approve everything you mentioned about the game, although, there are a few things that could change other than the things you mentioned, like how certain types of ammunition bounces of that shouldn't in reality bounce

It is. But it's more sim-like and will probably never be a direct competitor. But I'll absolutely play it.

I quit War Thunder 2 years ago. I played it for over a year, had about 1000 hours on Steam. At first, this game is any WW2 nerd's dream. Hundreds of tanks and planes models from all over the world, plenty of customization options, semi-realistic battle mechanics, but still fun and dynamic enough for casuals. I set myself the goal of finishing at least one of the tech trees, I picked the soviets. Even with a premium account and many premium vehicles, the grind was a nightmare. Mid to late game vehicles have ridiculous research times, sometimes it took months to finish upgrading a plane. With every update, the grind got even worse, instead of addressing the grind issues, the devs kept adding new grind mechanics(new virtual currencies and events that required more and more work hours) and increasingly more expensive and unbalanced vehicles. No matter how much I played, or how well I performed, the end of the tech tree just kept getting further and further away from me.
By the end of it, War Thunder was no longer fun. It felt like a full time job that I had to pay for. I left the game, and its community, deeply disappointed with all its wasted potential and regretting having spent so much money and hours of my life on it.

Im playing now war Thunder since some time (I’m at BR 4.3) and the biggest issue I have is to fight enemy’s with sometimes 5.7 BR together with teammates with 5.3 BR... it’s impossible to get some kills or to win the game, but it’s still a very awesome game and makes so much fun. I can’t decide calling it a good or a bad game. Totally agree with your review
I never buy premium time I rely on the daily login reward and hope for an XP booster

You are so right dude, every bit of it. especially about the BR... no new players want to struggle in none modified vehicle while facing someone with higher BR and full mods... that's where the fun goes to die. And fixing just that will bring more players and some old ones would be back for sure.

As a war thunder player who has played for a couple years now, I can say I like how you put it, I mean there is a way to test drive premium vehicles using special things so you can play those for a bit quite nicely but it's sometimes so grindy even for that and boi I run outta silver lions quickly because for some reason a wirbelwind costs more to repair than a tiger tank! Like WTF Gaijin?!

hmm I don't think is corporate greed, I mean the game is free to play... I think I have been playing the game for 5-6 years now I didn't even spent a single dollar on It. (I think I did, like 5, but not much more)
@@v44n7 Don't mistake "free to play" with "no greed". Crossfire for example is one of the top revenue games of all time. It's free to play. Abusing people's mental weaknesses is far easier in f2p games than in most other formats. See loot boxes or leveling loops with xp boosters for example.
Agree totally, except for a nitpick about the Tiger 2 H comment. The T-54 (1947) which iirc is the only T-54 the tiger faces can only penetrate the front turret from most ranges. This becomes a difficult target at 500+ meters while the T-54's turret flat is vulnerable to the KwK 43 up to the same distance, though again it is an incredibly difficult target. The T-54 (1947) doesn't get APDS or HEATFS to penetrate the tiger's glacis like the mod. 1949 and mod. 1951.
No hard feelings, it just gets on my nerves when people talk about the two vehicles in relation like it's unwinnable for the Tiger. They're not equal obviously, which is why the T-54 is at 7.7 and the Tiger at 6.7. With only 4 top tier tanks per battle, getting put at 7.7 in a 6.7 tank isn't a death sentence.

I've played War Thunder since the first closed beta where we only had a handful of planes and arcade mode to play with. I love the game and can play it because I got pretty much every vehicle I need, but for what it have turned into, I will not recommend it to anyone.
I'm still butthurt about the removal of the Flakpanzer 341, If they ever released it again I would play even if it was a premium

I’ve been at this game since the plane only days and your not wrong. I was lucky (I guess) when my account deserted one day and I grind through the US tech tree a second time. Honestly the points you make are spot on.

The heartless Gaijin is just trying to kill WT player slowly by making them suffer from broke and health issue for the grind. Even spending money on this game is painful because you know you spent it just to reduce your suffer and what you get - for the money - is just like a cherry on top. Better to spend your money to any triple A games and you got a complete fun.
Nice review! You underlined the most significative problem of this game: in particular the slowness of the research of new vehicle. I play the game now for two years, playing it for 270 hours, and I’m stack at tier III in every nation.
The only nation “easy” to research up to the top tier was Italy. But only because there was less vehicle compared to the other nations. BUT NOW THEY COPY AND PASTE A 1/3 OF THE AMERICAN TECH TREE!!!!
Another problem is this: some time for “filling the gap” the campy and paste vehicle for other nations. Ok they were lend lease bad vehicle buy after the war; but I prefer few vehicles the are unique of Italy, instead of add a bunch of Sherman (and already there was some Americans vehicle in the Italian tech tree). I mean if I want play a mach with 4 Sherman, I play USA don’t Italy

It's okay if you stay on the "surface" like for example buy some 50% discounted premium time. They need to run the game somehow. But I will never understand the 59€ vehicles and similar stuff. This and a lot of other things, like the events where you have to grind until your eyes bleed for a single vehicle. And if you don't have the time it's not a problem: you're free to buy the missing parts you need or the whole vehicle on the gaijin marketplace... o_o this way they even managed to get the players to exploit each other. Would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
3.7k hours over a 8-ish year span without spending ANY money.. I have yet to finish the American air/ground tree, and haven’t touched anything else. My advice; don’t get sucked in. There’s a certain point (~750-1000 hours) where you feel that you’ve spent so much time playing, that if you quit now, it would be all be for nothing, so you continue to play. Just don’t, please. Save yourself. It’s never worth it.

im playing since 2015 and have about 3000 hours and I'm still grinding Germany at 9.0 and i just have America and Russia up to 6.0 and the rest at about 2.7 );
Used to be a tank only person until i hit the 6.7 grindwall then switched to planes, the progression is much faster there and seems like most of the hot stuff is in the aviation
To be honest I play this game for free, and I never had problems with silver lions. But I do a smart thing: wait for discounts (that are like four times a year) to buy high tier vehicles I've researched. And yes i have tier 6 vehicles in both ground and air. I play mostly RB (ground and air), but if you'll play some air AB you'll be swimming in silver lions.
Yes, that's possible. But I suck at air AB. I just don't seem to get the "arcade mindset" and earn more sl/RP in the realistic modes.

US and UK is fun to play 20% into the tech tree, after that you get nuked from kilometres away by German, Russian and French heavies you can't pen (Us and UK seem to consistently fight the entire world in WT). Unless you use a tank destroyer but that must means all aircraft can now reliably kill you as well. Then it's a long grind for better equipped tanks.
I went back to low battle rank battles for now as they are most fun to me. Having silly interwar tanks, armoured cars with 2-pounder guns and biplanes battle it out is more enjoyable than every match being a sniper battle. It also means you don't loose "money" for repairs so easily
